Mayor Owen Henry With another school year behind us and summer officially here, many of us are enjoying the outdoors and fun family activities. Whether it is swimming at Cheesequake State Park or playing baseball or soccer on one of our beautiful recreation fields, please keep safety top-of-mind.

Please pay close attention to children while swimming, apply sunscreen when outdoors, check for ticks, and never leave children or pets in a car unattended, even for a short amount of time.

I would like to congratulate all of our recent graduates once again. It is always a pleasure to watch our children and young adults achieve such a milestone. And thank you to our wonderful, dedicated teachers and administrators for all your efforts throughout this past difficult year. You are truly instrumental in shaping the lives of our future generation.

I would be remiss if I did not take the opportunity to acknowledge the many volunteers who make our township a wonderful place to live. From those who serve as first responders, to those on our boards, commissions, and committees, and also those who serve our various civic organizations, we simply could not function as a township without you. Your town stands behind you and is always there to help

in any way we can. Sometimes, during all of the busy things that we have going on, we forget to stop and say thank you. But it is our volunteers that keep our civic spirit alive and make the town the place we all love to call home.

We are excited to have some ongoing construction projects in our municipal complex continuing throughout the summer. Our courtroom is currently being renovated, in addition to our Code Enforcement offices, and the police locker room. We also recently added new signage throughout the complex. Our goal is to make our facilities more resident friendly and continue to improve and modernize our buildings.

Most importantly, as we recently celebrated our freedom and independence on the Fourth of July, it is only fitting that we stop for a moment and thank our troops for all they do to protect and defend our country.

American troops continue to fight daily for our freedom and many of those soldiers live right here in Old Bridge.

By Himanshu R. Shah, Business Administrator 1. 2021 ANNUAL ROAD RESURFACING PROGRAM On June 10, 2021, bids were received, opened, and Himanshu R. read in public Shah for the 2021 Annual Road Resurfacing Contract #2021-38 from fourteen contractors. Meco, Inc. was the lowest bidder at $1,179,186.27.

Work includes milling, resurfacing, pavement striping & markings, replacement of inlet grates and head pieces and construction of ADA compliant curb ramps on 29 Township roads. Award of this contract is included on tonight’s consent agenda. The project will be funded through Capital Bond and District 1 & 2 Transportation Pro Rata Funds. Construction is scheduled for Summer 2021.

2. MORGANVILLE R OA D R E S U R FAC I N G

On June 10, 2021, bids were received, opened, and read in public from fourteen contractors for the Morganville Road Resurfacing Contract #2021-34.

Lucas Brothers, Inc. was the lowest bidder at $381,381.00.

This project is for the resurfacing of Morganville Road from Old Bridge – Matawan Road (County Route 516) to our municipal border with Aberdeen Township, approximately 0.87 miles. In general, the work includes milling, resurfacing, pavement striping & markings, replacement of inlet grates and head pieces and construction of ADA compliant curb ramps.

The project will be funded through the NJDOT Municipal Aid Program in the amount of $341,510.00 and Capital Bond in the amount of $39,871.00.

3. CIVIC CENTER AMPHITHEATER RETAINI N G WA L L & S TA I RW E L L R E PL AC E M E N T On May 6, 2021, bids were

received, opened, and read in public for the Civic Center Amphitheater Retaining Wall & Stairwell Replacement, Contract #2021-36. Construction includes the removal and replacement of the existing southern retailing wall and stair system, the amphitheater tiered modular block seating wall, and new concrete sidewalk around the retaining wall. Award of this contract has been included on tonight’s consent agenda with construction scheduled for Summer 2021.

To save children dying from an extremely rare, always-fatal disease, two executives from JAR Of Hope foundation are undertaking a walk they call “300 Miles Of Love.” Starting on July 10, Jim Raffone, Founder/CEO, Treasurer Joe Ippolito and Martin Cintron will walk 300 miles across four states in seven and a half days.

JAR Of Hope raises funds to research a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a disease so rare it occurs only once in every 3,500 live births. Duchenne is a muscle-wasting disease, with no cure. These children are in wheelchairs by their

early-teens. Breathing on ventilators by their mid-late-teens.

And in graves by their early-twenties. After suffocating.

“These days, it’s extremely tough for charitable foundations,” says Jim Raffone. “But these kids are still dying. So we have to be extremely creative in finding ways to research a cure.”

Jim and Karen Raffone started JAR Of Hope in 2013, after their then-four-year-old son, James Anthony (“Jamesy”), was diagnosed with Duchenne MD. Jamesy recently turned twelve… the age when kids with Duchenne start losing the ability to walk.

will begin “300 Miles Of Love” at the University of Massachusetts – which monitors Jamesy’s Duchenne. They’ll average 40 miles a day, camping out at night. Their last night, July 17, they’ll camp at All American Subaru in Old Bridge, NJ, one of 13 sponsoring Subaru dealerships along the route. And their walk will come to a festive finish the next day – after the last 37 miles - at Frogbridge Day Camp in Millstone, NJ, with a Family BBQ with games and prizes.

This is the second big “Walk” for JAR Of Hope. Last year Raffone and several team members did a 260-mile “Walk

Calvary Chapel There is no Old Bridge end to the philosophical and psychological theories, not to mention the plethora of religions and various “isms.” With these questions left unsatisfactorily answered by the efforts and intellects through history, where does one turn for the truth?

The Bible says we are made in God’s image (Gen 1:27). But the Bible also reveals that the devil has attempted to mar that image from the beginning by cleverly distorting the truth. He deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden that if she disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit, she

would discover her purpose, to be like God. Instead, when Adam and she both ate of that tree, they fell far from God’s glory into sin.

Such partial truths contain the most deadly lies. The irony of this deception is that God’s ultimate plan is for people to be like Him and in a close relationship with Him—but that is discovered only in His way, not our own.

Sin has twisted this innate sense of discovering our greatness into an evil desire to replace God. Instead of returning to Him in humility and using our God-given creativity to reflect His image, we turn from Him. Instead of discovering our true worth under His loving guidance and His love, many have created an alternate reality and an alternate identity void of Him. Now they become vulnerable to a corrupted form of glory—an empty narcissistic ambition.

If you rebel against God’s excellent plan for your destiny, you will end up losing everything in the end, joining Satan in everlasting torment. But suppose you humble yourself before God and acknowledge Him, believing in His plan of saving you by His

own Son’s sacrificial laying down of His life for us. In that case, you will find a destiny far beyond your imagination! To restore our ultimate purpose and glory, we must give up the rebellious notion of being independent of God, thinking we can create our truth, reality, and identity.

Identity confusion is pandemic among young people. Forsaking biblical teaching, many have concluded religion is irrelevant.

Youth become desperate to find their own identity and purpose, and it results in depressive social conformity. In redefining themselves, they miss that unique purpose God designed for each one made in His image!

Is this pervading meaninglessness why life is so complex and depressing? To not be aware of how valuable something is, one may quickly be rid of it. Some have sold priceless paintings for a few dollars at a garage sale, ignorant of their value. But consider why it is challenging to read the Bible, acknowledge our sin, and love our neighbor (even our spouses). Do not trials and temptations from the devil show that you are more signif-

icant than you realize? Thieves would not risk life in prison to break into a bank if they knew there were only a few dollars to be had. Satan would not attempt to spend every waking moment to mess with you if you were not of inestimable worth to his hated enemy, God. Nor would God have paid the highest price of the great suffering and death of His Son, Jesus, who died to rescue us if we were of no worth.

We are born with five incredible senses in this physical world to interact with the created world around us. However, when you shut the door to the most significant part of you, your spiritual sense, you miss knowing your true worth. If you rely only upon those five natural senses, trusting how you feel, you will ultimately

exalt yourself and end up using people for your purpose. But if you are delivered from the tyranny of self and find peace with God through Jesus Christ, you will find new love, value, and care for others as never before.

Won’t you believe in Jesus Christ who died for you or at least be willing to take another look at Him? The more you get to know Him, I am certain the more you will trust Him and love Him. By opening your heart to believe in Him, you can experience the fruit of His Spirit in your life—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control.

You were made in His image to reflect the glory of God, and you will only find your true identity and purpose in Him!

IT IS ESSENTIAL TO KNOW IF SAT OR ACT IS BETTER FOR YOUR CHILD When I receive a phone call, the first advice I give to parents is for them to send their child for a mock SAT and ACT. It is easier for me to focus on just the SAT since every high school junior All Around Old Bridge seems to be taking that test…. So why would I make that suggestion?... because having taught these tests for the past 23 years, I have watched students over and over as they have struggled with the SAT when the ACT was likely a better fit for them. I have seen others, who have done their due diligence, shine on the test that was a better fit for them. As

a result, these students were admitted to universities that may have never otherwise accepted them.

For example, a former student who only took the ACT is now entering his senior year at Emory, the #21 ranked university (out of over 2800 4-year institutions) on US News and World Report. To give you a mental toehold, Emory is among the top 99.993% of 4-year colleges. Another former student was admitted to an even higher-ranking school—an Ivy League— UPenn, after posting an ACT score that was comparably better than his SAT score. Granted, crushing both exams will only help students chances of getting into the nation’s most elite universities, but what

about the rest of us? It is best to find out which test is a better fit immediately and prepare for it moving forward. This could save time and money. Universities do not favor one exam over the other. It is important to remember the purpose of these exams—to maximize the chance a student has to get into his or her top-choice university. Mindful of this fact, why not first figure out which test is better?

DON’T LET TICKS & HEAT STROKE SPOIL SUMMER FUN

Dr. Anita Greenberg and her husband, Dr. Daniel Belli, are the owners and operators of the East Brunswick Animal Hospital for more than 30 years. Dr. Greenberg has been a member of the Old Bridge Township Council since 2016 Summer signals fun and more time outdoors with our pets.

But the best interest of those pets should be a prime concern as they come in contact with more biting bugs and the impact of hot weather.

Tick bites can transmit diseases such as Lyme, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, canine ehrlichiosis, and canine anaplasmosis, just to name a few. Ticks are nearly impossible to find on thick-coated pets, and you may not find

the tick that spreads the disease.

But afflicted pets may become fatigued, feverish, lame, have no appetite, and develop kidney failure. If your pet exhibits these symptoms, visit your vet.

But most importantly, use preventative treatments to protect your pet from such diseases.

Flea infestation not only affects your pet but also your home.

Many pets are allergic to the saliva of the flea bite, exhibiting a severe case of dermatitis.

Pets may acquire tapeworms if they ingest an adult flea. Using flea prevention -- topical or oral -- and checking your pet daily is important. Bathing them regularly is beneficial.

Heartworm disease is spread through the bite of a mosquito, depositing microfilariae, Dirofilaria immitis, into the blood stream of your pet, causing damage to the lungs and, ultimately, heart failure. Prevention is the key. A monthly preventative will save a lot of heartache.

Avoid dehydration in hot

weather. Always have a source of fresh, clean water available for your pets. Decreased skin elasticity is a sign of dehydration.

Do not exercise your pet during the hottest times of the day. Restrict activity to early morning or when the sun goes done in the evening. Dogs do not sweat.

They give off heat by panting.

Pets can get sunburn, especially short-coated or hairless pets. It is appropriate to apply a waterproof 30 SPF sunscreen.

One of the most common sun-related cancers is squamous cell carcinoma, often seen on cats, often on their noses. Sun-related tumors can also be seen on the lips, nose and pinnae [external part] of the ear. These crusty, ulcerated areas are not responsive to topical anti-inflammatories.

Never leave your pet in unattended vehicles. Pets die in hot cars every summer. The temperature in the car rises to extreme temperatures within 15 minutes.

Heatstroke is a serious problem and may be life threat-

ening. Pets who are dehydrated, obese, have poor cardiovascular systems, or have hyperthyroidism are at greater risk and should avoid the heat.

Brachycephalic breeds [shortskulled like pugs and bulldogs] are at a greater risk for heatstroke, when the body temperature can reach more than 106 degrees.

Early recognition is the key. Cool your pet down gradually with cool water and a fan, apply cold alcohol to the pads of the feet, and axillary areas, and transport to the vet hospital immediately.

When you take your dog out on pavement, put your hand down first to check the temperature of the macadam or cement.

Outdoor barbecues are a lot of fun, but problematic for your pets.

Remind your guests not to give scraps or bones to your pets. If your dog licks the grease drippings from the barbecue, it may cause vomiting or diarrhea. Be extremely cautious with corn on the cob. If the cob is ingested, it may become lodged in the intestine, causing a blockage, and needing emergency surgery. Be attentive that toothpicks and shish kebab sticks may splinter and puncture the intestine if eaten by your pet.

The Max of Old Bridge & Manalapan led a Virtual 5k with well over 200 people participated in. They sold shirts, raffled off tons of prizes all donated from the community and we were just amazed how many local businesses in the areas sponsored all of their efforts.

“The support for this incredible important cause showed just how much grit, determination and adaptability we have as a community and as a Max family,” stated Rich Bruno.

“Despite a pandemic and cancelling a major even last year this team pushed forward and found new ways to raise awareness and money to support Suicide Prevention, quitting was not an option for any of us.”

AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025. Manalapan & Old Bridge efforts are helping to make this a reality.
