HAUSER HILL HEALTHY KIDS RUNNING SERIES FARMS OPENS CELEBRATES 13 YEARS! Recognizing a need, fanatic MAY 1, 2022 runner and a local mom of two

Happy Spring from Hauser Hill Farms! We have been busy bees here on the farm getting ready for the 2022 season! The greenhouses are filling up and we’re getting ready to start work in the fields. Some of the winter activities we have been doing are such tasks as pruning the apple, peach, nectarine, pear and cherry trees. We have also pruned the blackberry and raspberry bushes and the grapes.

The strawberries have wintered over and have already had their first weeding. The tomatoes are due to be planted in the high tunnel greenhouse by April 1st, so that we can begin picking tomatoes earlier in the season.

toddlers, Laura Aliberti brought the Healthy Kids Running Series to Old Bridge in the Fall of 2021. “We do team sports really well around here. Soccer, hockey, baseball, basketball, lacrosse-you name it, we have it. What we needed was more an inclusive individual activities from younger age to get kids up and moving, that’s why I decided to start this program.”

Healthy Kids Running Series, is a national inclusive and fun youth running program with over 300 locations world-wide and impacting more than 60,000 kids. It’s inspiring boys and girls (ages 2-14) to believe in themselves and lead an active healthy lifestyle. The program also boasts the Challenger Division, an all abilities division for youth with extra support needs. This season’s first race will begin on Sunday, April 24th at 11am in Lombardi Football Field 3439 County Rd 516, Old Bridge.

Whether it’s running or another outdoor activity, we just want to get kids and families moving. Our races are kid focused with the ultimate goal of teaching them how to be active and healthy while creating meaningful relationships within our community.

Healthy Kids Running Series offers a five-week program in the Spring and again in the Fall with age appropriate race distances. Kids compete each week to earn points, and at the end of the series, the top runners

in their respective age division, earn a trophy. All participants receive a finisher’s medal, race packet, donated by our generous Sponsors and a Healthy Kids Running Series tech T-shirt for their achievements. Early bird registration is $35 for the five-week Series prior to April 3rd and then increases to $40.

Spring is in the air here in Old Bridge Township. Hopefully, the harsh winter is behind us, and we can look forward to spending time outside and enjoying the warmer weather.

Mayor Henry’s Clean Team will kick off the litter program on Saturday, April 2nd. Any nonprofit organizations who are interested in participating should contact the Clean Communities Coordinator at (732) 721-5600 x6107, or by emailing Recycling@OldBridge.com. Volunteers will be cleaning up local roadways on various weekends now through November. Please slowdown in our town and drive with care. Let’s also make a difference by educating others about the negative impact that litter has on our environment and appearances of the town.

The Parks and Recreation Department is in full spring mode getting our parks, fields, and courts in top condition for the upcoming season. The spring brochure is currently available and filled with pro-

“Play Ball!” Nothing says “Spring” like the sound of a bat hitting a home run and the crowd cheering the player on.

I am excited to participate in several little league opening day ceremonies happening around our community. Our baseball fields and soccer fields are ready for action and our athletes are anxious to play. I look forward to seeing everyone at the opening ceremonies.

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY RELAY FOR LIFE OF OLD BRIDGE The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Old Bridge invites the community to join the movement to honor and remember loved ones and fight back for lifesaving change on Friday May 13th, 2022 (5 to midnight) at Lombardi Field (3439 County Rd 516, Old Bridge, NJ 08857). This year’s event theme is “Scare Away Cancer” and will feature music and entertainment by DJ Embry along with games, food and activities for all!

THE GOOD, BAD AND BITING OF SPRING

As we look for ward to warmer temperatures and longer days, consider our fourlegged friends. Spring can bring certain problems for our pets.

Fleas are quite pervasive as they are carried by other pets, they are in the grass and, when they make it into your home, they thrive.

Fleas are irritating to your pet when they bite for a blood meal.

Your pet may be allergic to the flea and have a flea allergic dermatitis. When your pet ingests the fleas it may get tape worms.

Ticks are in the grass, near fields and woody areas. Ticks can cause Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Anaplamosis, Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis, and Tularemia to name a few.

Flea and tick medication have come a long way and are very effective and efficient. Pet owners use to have to give flea baths, flea dips and fog their homes. Now there are topical flea and tick prevention. Topical may not be easy to apply, as you have to get down to the skin, not on the coat. This can be challenging in long-haired pets.

There are chewable oral tablets that are very effective in flea and tick prevention. Once a month treatment is the best protocol to eradicate these parasites.

Use a flea comb to check your pets. Comb through the coat and look for fleas and their “dirt.” The dirt, the dark debris

that looks like pepper, is the excrement of the flea, and the white parts are the flea eggs.

Ticks don’t move fast and you can see their head and legs.

Usually when they are attached to your pet their body is engorged with blood. When removing a tick, use a fine tipped tweezer, grasp the tick close to the skin, and swiftly pull back with steady pressure. Thoroughly clean the area and wash your hands.

Heartworm disease is caused when a mosquito bites your pet, infecting him with Dirofilariasis immitis. The mosquito bite deposits heartworm larvae.

The heartworm matures, living in major vessels and in the heart. An adult heartworm can grow up to a foot in length.

A pet with heartworm disease, exhibits coughing, exercise intolerance and labored breathing. If left untreated, pulmonary thromboembolism, pulmonary hypertension and, ultimately, congestive heart failure can lead to death.

Prevention is the most effective treatment for your pet with a once a month chewable tablet, which also protects against intestinal parasites. There is also an option of a yearly injectable form.

Other spring precautions to consider for your pets: • Easter baskets can cause a problem for pets. The chocolate ingested, especially Baker’s Chocolate, or dark chocolate is most toxic. The Easter grass can cause intestinal obstruction in cats and dogs.

• Lilies are very common at this time of year and are highly toxic, causing kidney damage.

• The bulb portion of tulips contains toxins that can cause gastrointestinal upset, depression of the central nervous system and cardiac problems.

• Azaleas and rhododendrons contain grayanotoxins that can produce vomiting, drooling, weakness and depression of the central nervous system, and could lead to coma and death.

• Peace lilies contain calcium

oxalate crystals, causing oral irritation and vomiting. They may cause difficulty in swallowing, intense burning and irritation of the mouth, lips and tongue.

• Herbicides and insecticides can also be harmful to your pet. Read labels completely and use caution.

• While spring cleaning, keep pets away from products and chemicals containing ammonia, bleach or chlorine.

• With the warmer weather, hawks, fox and other wildlife are coming out of their winter hiding spots and hunting for food. Small cats and dogs should not be left unmonitored, as they may become their prey.

Enjoy the spring, the nice weather, the longer days and being outside after a winter of being shut in due to snow and Covid19.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE SAT AND ACT I am often asked the differences between the SAT and ACT in order to determine which test will likely be the better option to maximize a student’s chance of acceptance to his or her top-choice university. This is a great question because students usually do a bit better on one than on the other.

One major consideration in deciding which test is better is a student’s math ability. The SAT is half math. The ACT is one quarter math. As a result, students whose math score is better than their verbal will often have a better SAT than ACT while a student whose verbal is better than math will often do better on the ACT. The choice is sometimes not that simple, though. Instead of a second math section, the ACT has a dedicated

science section, which is really just a test of reading comprehension and data analysis. There is typically only 1 question out of 40 whose answer is not provided in the text and graphics.

Aptitude in science seems not to be as much as a deciding factor, though, because the SAT also tests science, just differently. 2 of the 5 reading passages are science-based (1 is literature and 2 are history/social studies), 1 of the 4 writing and language passages is science-based (1 is history/social studies and 2 are about whatever), and there are science-based and history/ social studies-based math questions sprinkled throughout the math section. When we consider content, math is usually the deciding factor.

Another consideration is time per question. The ACT is a faster test. Students are given 36 seconds per English question as opposed to the SAT equivalent writing and

language section where students are given 48 seconds per question. Students have exactly 60 seconds to answer an ACT math question, while they have 75 (sections 3) and 87 seconds (section 4) to answer an SAT math question. That being said, most students find the ACT to be more straightforward. Since the ACT is a test of speed, students with an IEP or 504 that includes extended time may have more of an advantage on ACT. While these differences merit consideration, here’s the kicker— half of the time a student is a better fit for one test on paper, but does comparably better on the other one…so why not take a mock test? LIVING STONES REAL HOPE

The present landscape of the world today— amidst the drug epidemic, continued fe ars ove r Lloyd Pulley, COVID variSenior Pastor ants, government overreach, “cancel culture,” and misinformation on the war in Ukraine—is leading many to become discouraged and depressed. I have heard not a few say, “What’s the point?” or “What difference can I make?” Many more sigh and mumble the adage, “The more things change, the more they remain the same!”

And now added to the stress are higher inflation and energy prices. Average monthly expenses have risen to nearly $450 a month more than last year for most families. Many of our once-trusted institutions across the nation, which in the past gave us realistic assessments and responses, are now more irrelevant. Because of all of these things, many have developed

more profound hopelessness than ever before. It was convenient to believe the “approved version of the truth” we were fed, but something seemed off.

Many are awakening to consider the vast changes within our nation in such a short time may be the result and end of a “long march through the institutions” in a culture war. As a battered woman becomes trapped in an abusive relationship, because the pain of the familiar is a lot more comfortable than the unknown, many have just sighed and accepted the “new reality” with little hope of change.

Hope often seems tethered to our circumstances—but is there a way to have an abiding hope that doesn’t vanish in times of difficulty? Is there a way to have a sense of purpose that enables us to go forward? The Bible describes hope as “an anchor for the soul, sure and steadfast,” and to a Christian familiar with the Bible, there is a deeper meaning behind all that is happening in the world around us.

We recently completed a series in our church entitled “Looking Up,” focused on what the Bible says about the times many are experiencing. Corrie ten Boom,

well known for her suffering in the concentration camps of the Nazis and for helping the Jewish people, said something insightful: “If you look at the world, you’ll be distressed. If you look within, you’ll be depressed. If you look at God, you’ll be at rest.”

The conclusion we reach then is that looking to our Creator is where real hope is found!

Let’s consider an example.

The fear of bringing up a child in a less-than-ideal situation has led millions to make a decision that will be deeply regretted— abortion. If we could see from a higher perspective, perhaps the answer to our problems is bound up in that little child’s life. In the Bible, Moses’ parents were pressured to sacrifice his life to Pharaoh’s decree—but instead they resisted, believing there was a greater purpose for their baby. They risked their lives to rescue him from certain death, and though it would be eighty years later, Israel’s cries to God for deliverance from Egypt were answered by that baby when he grew up and led them to the promised land!

Last week I received a picture of one of the hundreds of babies rescued by Bridge Women’s

Center outside of an abortion clinic. The mom who sent the picture had been scheduled to have an abortion that day, but instead entered our Mobile Pregnancy Center. She saw an ultrasound of the baby in her womb and chose life!

Along with the picture of her beautiful baby, she thanked us profusely for being there in her moment of hopelessness. Who can tell what great purpose lies in store for that one child?

Passages in the Bible about the moral conditions in the end times speak of pervading selfishness (1 Timothy 4, 2 Timothy 3, Matthew 24). But those who believe in God have put their hope in Him during the darkest trials. Because He lives, we have hope for the future no matter what is happening today!

Please take another look at Jesus! A recent book and now video series, “Person of Interest”

Jesus is the only real “person of interest” to answer the cause for an explosive change for good in the world. Looking to Jesus gives us hope! He gives us the strength to endure despite our circumstances because He is above them and beyond them!

And once we look to Him for our salvation, we realize Jesus settled the debt that has kept us in fear, needing to save ourselves.

We can be bold now to abandon our self-interests and look to the interests of others! We can rescue that baby from abortion.

We can encourage that neighbor under the weight of his drug addiction. We can offer support to the hurting woman caught in the cycle of abuse. We have a Living Hope to give them!

The death of Jesus can give you confidence and hope even beyond the grave when you believe that His sacrifice paid for your debt of sin. Hoping this Easter season you open your Bible and take another look at Jesus!

LIBRARY DIRECTORS REPORT Library service is coming back to Laurence Harbor. With an anticipated start date of Tuesday, May 3, 2022 the Old Bridge Public Library will once again be setting up shop, this time in the Recreation Center building at Laurence Harbor Beach Front Park. Sharing space with the Township Parks and Recreation Department, the library will be offering books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, computers, and occasional programs. Operating hours will be Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 1:00 – 5:00 PM, and an outside bookdrop will allow return of materials 24/7. We look forward to seeing you there.

RONALD MAZZOLA

September 26, 1960 - Februar y 21, 2022 Friend, Sports Enthusiast, and Mr. Old Bridge, Ronald “Ron” Mazzola, 61 of Old Bridge passed away suddenly at his home. Ron was born in Brooklyn New York to his parents the late Nunzio and Anne Passarelli Mazzola. He was a life long resident of Old Bridge graduating from Madison Central High School

in 1978. Ron was active in numerous Old Bridge Township and surrounding towns organizations. He was most active in Central Jersey Sports. He was the voice of Old Bridge football for many years calling games in a professional and yet thrilling manner. Ron also served as the public announcer for Rutgers University wrestling, the GMC wrestling tournament, Shore Conference, NJSIAA gymnastics as well as announcing for field hockey, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball and soccer events for high schools throughout Middlesex County.

He was a member of the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers and was once voted GMC’s best public address announcer.

His involvement in GMC’s wrestling garnered him multiple “Man of the Year” awards.

Ron owned and operated

Prestige Imaging, providing apparel, uniforms, awards trophies and much more. His career led him to not only GMC Conference schools but other schools and clients throughout New Jersey. One of Ron’s last accomplishments was losing over 100 pounds. In the last year he was proud to have achieved the goal of healthy living and lifestyle.

Besides his involvement in sports he was active in Spotswood Athletics and Polish American Club of Spotswood.

He was Mr. Old Bridge to many but to his family his was the baby brother. Always answering his phone, providing comic relief and a lending ear. His work and volunteering impacted the lives of thousands of young athletes and Old Bridge residents. There will never be another Ron, Mr. Old Bridge but his legacy of love, laughter and life will be carried on by the many who knew him.

He was predeceased by his parents and brother Joseph.

Ron leaves behind his sisters, Lucille Mortimer of Diamondhead, MS, Grace Patella of Old Bridge, Karen Rimmer and husband Kim, Burlington, NC, his aunt, Lorraine Mazzola, Brooklyn, NY, dear family friends, Frank and Judy Brady of Old Bridge and Mark and Bernice Koppel of Spotswood, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, cousins and friends.

visitation on Wednesday, March 2, from 2-9 PM at Old Bridge Funeral Home, 2350 Rt 516, Old Bridge. Sports attire is welcome to be worn out of memory for Ron (something he would appreciate). A funeral mass was offered on Thursday, March 3 at 10:30am in St. Ambrose Church, 83 Throckmorton Road, Old Bridge, at the conclusion of mass the procession will pass

WHEN IS THE EMERGENCY ROOM THE RIGHT CHOICE? Do you know where to go in a medical emergency? And do you know how to recognize one? As the number of urgent care locations grows, so does the convenience of receiving medical attention. However, it’s important to know where to go based on the situation at hand.

“Urgent care centers are a convenient choice if you’ve got a minor injury or illness, such as the flu, minor cuts or an animal bite, and you can’t wait to see your doctor,” says Michael Eagan, M.D., Medical Director, Old Bridge Medical Center, “However, when you have a life-threatening medical situation, you should visit an Emergency Department.”

Here are some examples of when you should head to the nearest Emergency Department.

Problem: Chest pain When to Go: If you feel chest pain, it could be a heart attack. Call 911 immediately if you have chest pain and: Have discomfort in the middle of your chest that

lasts more than a few minutes or that goes away and comes back Experience chest pain that feels like squeezing, fullness or uncomfortable pressure Feel consistent pain or discomfort in your arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach Have shortness of breath Feel light-headed Are nauseous Problem: Sudden onset of visual or balance problems When to Go: Head to the Emergency Department immediately — especially if these symptoms are accompanied by: Face drooping Arm weakness Speech difficulty These are all signs of stroke.

The faster you call 911 and get to the Emergency Depar tment, the more likely you are to prevent longterm effects from stroke.

Problem: Allergic reaction When to Go: Head to the Emergency Department if your allergic reaction is severe and

you experience: Tr o u b l e b r e a t h i n g Hives Swelling Problem: High fever When to Go: Get emergency or immediate medical help if: Elderly or immunocompromised adults have a fever over 101.

You have a fever of 103 with other symptoms (shortness of breath, weakness, cough, etc.)

You have a temperature of 105 or higher with no other symptoms.

Children younger than 3 months have a temperature of 100.4 degrees or higher.

Children are having seizures, cannot be awakened easily, cannot walk or are having trouble breathing during a fever, or their fever lasts more than a few days.

Unsure if it’s an emergency?

Don’t delay seeking help if you think there’s a chance your symptoms p os e an emergency. “Getting prompt treatment can make all the difference in your chances for recovery,” says Dr. Eagan.
