CHAMBER CONNECT

V. Grandi President, Matawan Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce

As we move into the heart of summer, I am pleased to welcome our newest Chamber members: CMG Home LoansJenn Daly and Stellar19 Studios – David Sturchio, and Anchor Care & Rehabilitation Center. We are excited to have Jenn and David join the Chamber and look forward to supporting their businesses while helping them build meaningful connections within our network. June was an exciting and successful month for the Chamber, highlighted by our 2026 MAC Awards & Board Installation Dinner: A Red, White, and Blue Celebration of Legacy and Community, held on Monday, June 15 at MJ’s at Buttonwood Manor. We were thrilled to host a sold-out event, bringing together business leaders, community partners, elected officials, and members to celebrate the individuals and organizations that make our Chamber and community stronger. It was a memorable evening filled with recognition, appreciation, and celebration of the spirit that makes Matawan and Aberdeen such special places to live and work. Congratulations again to all of our award recipients and thank you to everyone who helped make the evening such a tremendous success.

Aberdeen Township residents are invited to join neighbors, first responders, and community organizations for National Night Out on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cambridge Park, located at Lloyd Road School.

National Night Out is a nationwide community-building

campaign held annually on the first Tuesday in August. The event is designed to strengthen relation ships between law enforcement and the communities they serve while promoting public safety, neighborhood connections, and community pride.

This year, Aberdeen’s Nation al Night Out will take place at Cambridge Park, offering a new setting for this community fa vorite event. Residents can look forward to meeting members of the Aberdeen Township Police Department, exploring police and emergency vehicles, participating in family-friendly activities, and connecting with local organiza tions and community partners.

LAKE LEFFERTS IS BOOMING WITH ACTIVITY

For nearly a century, Lake Lefferts has been one of Matawan Borough’s greatest assets. Since its creation in 1928, the lake has become a hub of activity for residents and visitors alike. It serves as the home of the Borough’s annual fireworks celebration and offers opportunities for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, boating, wildlife

watching, and simply enjoying the scenic surroundings. The larger fishing dock, installed a few years ago, has become a popular gathering spot for anglers of all ages.

This summer, the Recreation Commission continues to expand recreational opportunities at the lake. On July 9, in partnership with the Economic Development and Historical Sites Commission, the Borough will host its first Lakeside Dining Dinner Theater featuring JAWS! The Musical, a parody on the movie, presented by a local performing arts group. Dinner will be provided by

DiBari’s Main Street Pizza, with reservations available through the restaurant. More information is available on the Borough website, matawanborough.com.

The popular Kids’ Fishing Clinic also returns for its second year, offering five consecutive Wednesday sessions in July for both beginning and experienced young anglers. Plans are also underway to install a bait vending machine, providing a convenient source of bait for the fishing community.

We hope all of our families are enjoying a safe, relaxing, and cool summer. Behind the scenes, our district remains hard at work preparing for September, especially as we implement redistricting and ready our buildings to welcome students into their new school communities. We encourage families to visit the “Shaping Our District’s Future” section at marsd. org for the latest updates and to watch for important back-to-school information. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we navigate this new undertaking for our district, as it will help the district continue managing population growth and shifts.

Families interested in touring their child’s new school are welcome to do so by scheduling an appointment with the school office. Summer office hours will run from July 1 through August 30, Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. We also want to remind you about transportation planning. Eligible families will receive bus route information before the start of school and may be asked to complete a Transportation Waiver Form

if busing is not needed. This step is critical in helping to create efficient routes, reduce unnecessary costs, and ensure resources are allocated appropriately. Just one example: last year, approximately 125 students were eligible for transportation at one school, but only about 50 regularly used it. Choosing to waive unnecessary transportation allows the district to be better stewards of taxpayer resources. The same stewardship applies to facility use. The Board is refining the District policy to ensure responsible and equitable use of our buildings and grounds. Enjoy the rest of the summer. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in September.

nity. Take this opportunity to meet the men and women who provide a safe community to all the Borough’s residents and visitors on a daily basis. MATAWAN MAYOR ALTOMONTE MESSAGE

Matawan Mayor Joseph Altomonte

School is out, and summer is finally here, and there is no better place to enjoy it than right here in our community. From taking in the views to kayaking or fishing at Lake Lefferts, to enjoying one of our beautiful parks and the exciting events happening all season long, there is something for everyone! I want to encourage every resident and visitor to get outside, make memories, and take full advantage of everything our community has to offer, but I also want us all to be safe. Please remember to swim within designated areas with lifeguards, keep a close eye on children near the water, and never swim alone. Water safety saves lives. For our cyclists hitting the Henry Hudson trails and the streets this summer, please wear a helmet, obey traffic signals, and stay

visible. Pedestrians, please use crosswalks, look both ways, and stay aware of your surroundings, especially near busy areas. To every driver sharing the road: please slow down. Our parks, lakefront, and events draw crowds of families, children, and cyclists. Obeying the speed limit and not texting is not just the law; it is how we protect one another.

We have a full calendar of community events planned throughout the summer, including our exciting Shark Tours in July and our outdoor concert series in August, and I could not be more excited to see our community come alive. Please stay tuned for more details on dates, locations, and activities.

Let’s make this a summer to remember for all the right reasons. Enjoy every moment, look out for each other, and be safe out there.

MATAWAN COUNCIL PRESIDENT

As summer arrives, Matawan is giving residents even more reasons to get outside and enjoy the Borough’s growing collection of parks and outdoor amenities both locally and throughout the county. The recently completed renovation of Clinton Street Park stands as a testament to that commitment. The upgraded space now features new seating, a brand-new playground, basketball and pickleball courts, seating, and improvements to the building serving the community and senior residents.

Next in line is Terhune Park, a centerpiece of Matawan’s downtown. The planned renovation will nearly double the playground area to accommodate children of various ages, while new walkways, landscaping, and seating areas will create a welcoming environment for residents. Everyone has a favorite coffee shop — we won’t start that debate! But soon, wherever you grab your cup in downtown Matawan,

Terhune Park will be the perfect place to enjoy it. As the Borough’s go-to venue for concerts and community events like Matawan Day, the venue will benefit from the enhancements, making this beloved gathering space even more functional and inviting.

Looking further ahead, the Borough is pursuing a county grant to support the addition of a building at Gravelly Brook Park, which would include restrooms and a snack stand, a much-needed resource for the sports organizations and community groups that regularly use the space.

Under our leadership, we have made it clear that investing in parks and outdoor spaces remains a top priority. In an era where “third spaces,” which are public places outside of home and work are increasingly recognized as vital to community well-being, Matawan is leading the way.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Aberdeen’s FIFA World Cup Watch Party at Cambridge Park. It was great to see so many residents come together to cheer on Team USA and enjoy an afternoon of community fun.

For me, one of the most exciting parts of the event was opening the newly improved ball fields. We’ve invested a lot into our parks over the last few years, and seeing kids immediately out there running around, playing games, and enjoying the fields made all that work worthwhile. That’s what these improvements are all about.

The Watch Party was a great way to kick off the summer, but we’re just getting started.

On Wednesday, July 1, we’ll celebrate America’s 250th Birthday with our annual Independence Day Celebration at Veterans Memorial Park. The festivities begin at 5:00 PM and include live

entertainment, food vendors, family activities, and of course, fireworks at 9:15 PM. It’s one of Aberdeen’s biggest events of the year and a great opportunity for residents to come together and celebrate our nation’s history.

July also means the return of our Summer Concert Series. This year, concerts will be held on Wednesday evenings at Veterans Memorial Park from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. We’ll welcome Madison Avenue on July 8, Southern Steel on July 15, E. Boro Bandits on July 22, and Kevin Kenny: The Kenny Chesney Show on July 29.

One of the things I enjoy most about summer in Aberdeen is seeing our parks and public spaces filled with residents. Whether you’re coming out for fireworks, a concert, or one of our many recreation programs, I hope you’ll take advantage of everything our community has to offer this season.

I look forward to seeing you this summer.

DEPUTY MAYOR HIRSCH MESSAGE

I am excited to share some great news for Aberdeen and the Cliffwood Beach community.

The Township has been awarded a $2.69 million Natural Climate Solutions Grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for our Cliffwood Beach Hybrid Living Shoreline Project. This significant award will help advance a long-awaited initiative designed to restore the shoreline, strengthen coastal resiliency, and better protect our community from future flooding and storm impacts.

This project has been years in the making. What began as a vision in 2020 has steadily moved through planning, engineering, environmental review, and permitting. With key state approvals already secured and final federal permitting underway, the project continues moving closer to construction.

The Cliffwood Beach Replenishment and Hybrid Living Shoreline Project includes beach replenishment, dune restoration, shoreline stabilization, native

vegetation plantings, and offshore breakwaters designed to reduce wave energy and help protect the waterfront from erosion. By combining engineering techniques with environmental restoration, the project will improve long-term resiliency while preserving the natural character of Cliffwood Beach.

This latest grant award builds upon approximately $3 million previously secured through the Department of Defense’s Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) Program in partnership with Naval Weapons Station Earle and Monmouth University. Together, these funding sources represent a major investment in Aberdeen’s future, these grants cover large portions of the project.

Projects of this size require planning, collaboration, and persistence. I want to thank our Township staff, engineers, environmental consultants, and project partners who have worked diligently to move this effort forward.

This project is about protecting our shoreline, our infrastructure, and an important part of our community for generations to come. We look forward to sharing additional updates as this exciting project continues toward construction.

help strengthen the relationships that make our community safer and stronger. We look forward to welcoming everyone to Cambridge Park and spending an evening together with the families we proudly serve.”

National Night Out continues to be an important reminder that strong communities are built through partnership, trust, and communication. Aberdeen Township encourages residents of all ages to attend and take part in this annual tradition.

Community organizations, nonprofits, and local businesses are also invited to

participate. Vendors are welcome to host informational tables, provide giveaways, or donate items to support the event. Please note that National Night Out is a non-sales event, and participating organizations may distribute information and promotional items only.

Organizations interested in participating or making a donation can contact Lieutenant Brian Alberti at brian.alberti@ aberdeennj.org or call (732) 583-4200, ext. 221. Admission is free, and all residents are encouraged to attend.

THE SAT BRINGS HAPPINESS PART 2

Last month I wrote about how, done properly, SAT prep can bring happiness. I wasn’t finished…

Another factor that makes prep more satisfying is deep focus. If a student can reach a state of flow—become fully engaged in their studies—they are happiest. To encourage this, students should study in blocks. A Harvard study found that 15 minutes of block study is optimal for retention. Students should not study longer than 2 hours before taking a break. While studying, students should be free of distractions. Timed drills on material slightly above the student’s ability is ideal. Outside of studies, students should exercise, which improves mood and cognition. Activity also reduces anxiety, improves memory and sleep, increases focus, and boosts mood. 20 minutes of walking daily, lifting weights, playing sports, or any light cardio before studying improves cognition. While activity improves sleep, sleep improves both happiness and performance. A well-rested student will learn faster, recall more, think clearer, and be calmer.

Sleep is part of your SAT curriculum.

Once a student gets to the test, calmness and confidence beats anxiety and panic. Students should expect some hard questions, accept that they will sometimes be uncertain, and set their focus on each question as a separate task rather than be focused on the score.

Having an attitude of gratitude on test day is also helpful. Research shows that gratitude lowers cortisol and improves emotional regulation. While it may be difficult to be grateful for a 134-minute test, students can be grateful for those who supported them in their test-prep quest. They can reflect on how much progress they have made and remember that they have an opportunity to perform well. Gratitude will help students shift their mind away from threat mode. Focus, exercise, sleep, and mindset help students have an optimal, happy performance. Interested in finding out more about how we build happier, more confident students? HAPPY 250TH BIRTHDAY, AMERICA!

On behalf of our residents, families, volunteers, and staff, I am proud that Reformed Church Home will be joining communities across our nation in celebrating America's 250th Birthday.

This milestone offers us an opportunity to reflect on the freedoms, opportunities, and enduring spirit that have shaped our country for generations. It is also a time to honor the many individuals whose lives, service, sacrifices, and contributions have helped enlighten the world around them.

As part of our celebration, we invite residents, families, and staff to participate in a festive Patriotic Parade. Whether you are walking independently, using a walker, or traveling in a wheelchair, we encourage everyone to join the fun by dressing and decorating in red, white, and blue.

On Friday, July 3rd, at 2:00 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room, we will gather for our Patriotic Parade followed by a special "fireworks" presentation filled with music, laughter, and community spirit.

As we celebrate this historic anniversary, I am reminded of the words inscribed

on the Statue of Liberty—Liberty Enlightening the World. In so many ways, the residents and team members of Reformed Church Home have done exactly that. Through their kindness, resilience, wisdom, service, and friendship, they have brought light to the lives of others and strengthened the community we proudly call home. YOUR VOICE IN TRENTON

Dear Old Bridge Residents,

On July 4th, 2026, our nation will mark a milestone that few countries in history have reached—the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. This moment invites us not only to celebrate, but to reflect on the extraordinary journey that brought us here.

Two and a half centuries ago, a small group of determined colonists declared that freedom, equality, and self-government were worth fighting for. Their courage sparked a revolution that reshaped the world and set in motion a story still being written today.

That story is our story. It belongs to every generation that has worked, sacrificed, and dreamed to make this nation stronger. It belongs to the families who built our towns, the veterans who defended our liberties, the innovators who pushed boundaries, and the everyday citizens who keep our communities vibrant and resilient.

As we approach this historic anniversary, I encourage each of us to pause and con-

sider what it means to be part of a nation founded on ideals rather than privilege. Our democracy has endured because ordinary people have always stepped forward—guided by hope, grounded in responsibility, and committed to one another.

The Semiquincentennial is more than a celebration of the past, it is a call to action for the future. Let us use this moment to renew our dedication to civic engagement, to strengthen the bonds that unite us, and to ensure that the next 250 years reflect the very best of who we are.

I am grateful to serve you during such a meaningful chapter in our nation’s history. May this anniversary inspire pride in our heritage, confidence in our shared purpose, and faith in the promise of America.

With deepest respect and gratitude,

Senator Owen Henry

CONGRATULATIONS ON 110 INCREDIBLE YEARS!

Matawan is proudly celebrating the 110 years of the Woman’s Club and their years of service! A remarkable milestone that reflects more than a century of dedication, service, and community impact.

For 110 years, this organization has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to making a difference. Their contributions have strengthened our community in

countless ways, and their legacy continues to inspire.

Most recently, the Economic Business Development Commission of the Chamber of Commerce selected the Woman’s Club as the recipient of last year’s donation to a local nonprofit during our Annual Blues & Cruise Night to help support the organization.

Their years of service have not gone unnoticed—Mayor Altomonte and Council President Gunn, Councilwoman Taraszkiewicz, Councilman Feiles, Congressman Pallone, and Asm. Clifton and other local leaders came together to recognize not only the organization itself but also individuals who have contributed to its success over the years and present various proclamations. This anniversary stands as a powerful testament to the lasting influence of the Woman’s Club. Here’s to celebrating their past achievements and looking forward to many more years of meaningful service to our community.

As always, thank you to our members, sponsors, volunteers, and community partners for your continued support of the Chamber. Your involvement is what drives our success and strengthens our mission of promoting local business and community growth.

I encourage everyone to continue shopping local, supporting one another, and staying engaged. Together, we are building a stronger business community for Matawan, Aberdeen, and beyond.

DR. G. DOUGLAS A. CRAWLEY HONORED WITH SPIRIT OF ABERDEEN AWARD AT 2026 MAC AWARDS DINNER

The 2026 Matawan-Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce (MAC) Awards & Board Installation Dinner brought together business leaders, community organizations, and residents for an evening celebrating service, leadership, and community impact. Among the evening’s most meaningful recognitions was the presentation of the Spirit of Aberdeen Award to Dr. G. Douglas

A. Crawley, pastor of Community Bible Fellowship Church in Cliffwood and a longtime advocate for the Aberdeen and Matawan communities.

The award was presented by Mayor Greg Cannon and members of the Aberdeen Township Council, who recognized Dr. Crawley’s decades of dedication to improving the lives of local families through faith-

based outreach, mentorship, education, and charitable initiatives.

Dr. Crawley serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Synergies Companies, Inc. in Matawan and has built a distinguished career spanning more than 50 years in business, entrepreneurship, military service, and community leadership. While his professional accomplishments are extensive, it is his commitment to serving others that has left a lasting mark on the local community.

As pastor of Community Bible Fellowship Church, Dr. Crawley has championed numerous programs designed to support children, families, and seniors throughout the region. He is the founder of the MOST (Mentoring Our Students Together) Program, an innovative partnership between the church and the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District that provides mentoring, tutoring, and recreational opportunities for students in grades two through twelve.

Through The Synergies Family Foundation, Dr. Crawley has also helped coordinate annual holiday programs

that provide food, toys, and winter coats to approximately 300 local families each year. The foundation also supports local charitable initiatives, extending its reach throughout the community and helping those in need.

A decorated veteran of the United States Air Force, Dr. Crawley flew 185 combat missions over North Vietnam and was discharged with the rank of Captain. His military service earned him numerous honors, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Air Medal.

The Spirit of Aberdeen Award recognizes individuals whose leadership, compassion, and commitment help strengthen the fabric of the community. Through his service as a pastor, mentor, business leader, veteran, and philanthropist, Dr. Crawley has exemplified those values for decades. His unwavering dedication to helping others and improving the lives of local residents makes him a deserving recipient of this prestigious honor and a true embodiment of the Spirit of Aberdeen.

USA VICTORY BRINGS COMMUNITY TOGETHER AT ABERDEEN WORLD CUP WATCH PARTY

More than 1,200 residents, families, and soccer fans gathered at Cambridge Park on Friday, June 19, for Aberdeen Township’s World Cup Watch Party, creating an unforgettable afternoon as Team USA defeated Australia 2-0 and advanced to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The atmosphere was electric from the opening whistle as attendees dressed in red, white, and blue filled the park to cheer on the U.S. Men’s National Team. Fans watched the action unfold on two massive

LED screens while enjoying food vendors, inflatables, community activities, samples from Alternate Ending.

The United States took an early lead in the 11th minute when Australia scored an own goal off the foot of defender Cameron Burgess. The Americans added another goal just before halftime when Alex Freeman’s header was awarded following a VAR review, giving Team USA a commanding 2-0 advantage. The U.S. defense held strong throughout the second half, recording a

The newest addition is the Rent.Fun Kayak Kiosk, allowing residents and visitors to rent single or tandem kayaks seven days a week from spring through

fall. The self-service kiosk includes kayaks, paddles, and life vests, making it easier than ever to explore Lake Lefferts.

As Lake Lefferts approaches its 100th anniversary, Matawan Borough remains committed to preserving and enhancing this treasured community resource for generations to come.

clean sheet and securing the nation’s second consecutive World Cup victory.

The win guaranteed the United States a place in the Round of 32 and marked the first time since 1930 that the Americans opened a World Cup with back-to-back group stage victories.

Before kickoff, Mayor Greg Cannon and members of the Township Council officially opened the event with a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating Aberdeen’s newly completed ballfield. . Children joined township officials on the field as the community marked the completion of the project.

Mayor Cannon noted that hosting FIFA World Cup matches in New Jersey has generated tremendous excitement throughout the region and inspired a growing interest in soccer among local youth.

“The World Cup being right here in New Jersey has really sparked interest in soccer throughout our community,” Cannon said.

“Bringing this watch party to Aberdeen gives families an opportunity to come together and celebrate the game while encouraging future generations of athletes.”

Throughout the match, cheers erupted across the park whenever Team USA

threatened to score. Fans waved American flags and celebrated each goal as if they were inside the stadium in Seattle.

While the game served as the centerpiece of the afternoon, the event showcased what makes Aberdeen special: neighbors gathering together, local organizations connecting with families, and residents celebrating community spirit.

Children kicked soccer balls beneath the giant screens, local youth sports organizations engaged with future players, and residents enjoyed an afternoon filled with family-friendly activities.

Aberdeen Township extends its sincere thanks to the event sponsors whose support helped make the watch party possible: BGIA, Florham Realty Management LLC, Fairview Insurance Agency Associates, ARH Associates, RD Parisi, NJ Leaf, and Alternate Ending.

As Team USA continues its World Cup journey, Aberdeen’s watch party proved that soccer isn’t the only winner, the community spirit on display made the day a victory for everyone.

JULY BRINGS MOVIES, MUSIC, MARKETS AND MORE TO MATAWAN

After a busy June, Matawan’s summer schedule continues with a variety of family-friendly events throughout July, offering residents plenty of opportunities to enjoy the season close to home.

The Borough’s popular Summer Movie Series returns to Terhune Park with three free outdoor movie nights. While each

evening is geared toward a different audience, everyone is welcome to attend any of the films. Movies begin at 7:00 p.m. on a giant LED screen, so be sure to bring a lawn chair or blanket for a comfortable evening under the stars.

July Movie Schedule

• Friday, July 10 – Song Sung Blue (Adult

Date Night) – Several scenes from the movie were filmed at Stillwell Garage right here in Matawan.

• Friday, July 17 – Zootopia 2 (Family Movie Night)

• Friday, July 31 – School of Rock (Teen Movie Night)

Fresh local produce, handmade goods, baked treats, and specialty vendors can also be found at the Matawan FRESH Farmers & Makers Market, held from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 11 and Saturday, July 25 at the Matawan Municipal Center, 201 Broad Street. The market continues to grow each season and has become a favorite weekend shopping destination.

History enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Matawan Historical Society’s 110th Anniversary Shark Attack Commemoration Tours on Sunday, July 12. The tours commemorate the infamous 1916 shark attacks that brought international attention to Matawan and later inspired Peter Benchley’s novel Jaws.

A special dedication ceremony will be held at 4:00 p.m. on the newly renovated Aberdeen Road Bridge, which spans Matawan Creek near the site of the attacks.
