On January 1, Old Bridge celebrated the inauguration of our new Mayor Debbie Walker, along with Council-at-large representatives Mary Sohor,
elected officials. In her inaugural address Mayor Walker expressed her deepest gratitude to the residents of Old Bridge for putting their trust in her and her team this past November. The inauguration marks the beginning of a new Mayor and administration in town in over 12 years. Mayor Walker was joined by her husband Bruce, son Eric, daughter-in-law Samantha, granddaughter Ali and motherin-law Bobbie for her swearing
Steven along with her grandson Roman, Councilwoman Dr. Greenberg-Belli was accompanied by her husband Dr. Daniel Belli and Councilman DePalma was joined by his wife Jennifer and daughters Sophia and Brianna. Our newly elected Mayor and Council are eager to begin not only building on the work of Mayor Henry’s time in office, but also steering Old Bridge forward to the future.
Old Bridge Township “Run for Our Heroes” 5K Race on April 20, 2024. This in-person race marks a significant milestone as it will be the first event of its kind since the pandemic, bringing the community together once again. In its inaugural race, “Run for
Our Heroes” 5K Race saw an overwhelming participation of over 400 runners, who navigated through the heart of Old Bridge, up Beacon Hill on Higgins Road, coming down Ticetown Road and finishing on Cotrell, culminating at the finish line at 9/11 Memorial in the municipal complex. This year, the race aims to surpass previous achievements, with even more runners anticipated to join in support of our courageous hometown heroes. As a testament to our gratitude, early registrants will receive a commemorative T-shirt (will supplies last) and a finisher’s medal, symbolizing their remarkable achievement. In addition, the
race will recognize outstanding performers with age group awards for first, second, and third place. Old Bridge Township Mayor Debbie Walker is delighted to spearhead the revitalization of this extraordinary event, collaborating with the local publication, All Around Old Bridge. Together, they aim to create an unforgettable experience for all participants and spectators. Mayor Debbie Walker I hope everyone had great a start to the new year and is looking forward to all that 2024 will bring. Our days are staying bright a little longer and soon we’ll be resetting our clocks for Daylight Savings time again. Spring is right around the corner! There are many things happening around town that are fun to do with the family even during the cold weather. In addition to cheering on our local teams here in town, be sure to visit Old Bridge’s John Piccolo Ice Arena. To plan parties or simply to spend a fun afternoon with friends and family,

I am excited to sponsor the New Jersey League of Municipalities Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition for high school juniors and seniors planning to continue their education after graduation. The purpose of this scholarship is to advance the virtues of elected and volunteer positions in municipal government, while raising awareness of municipal government in general. To compete for the scholarship, the student must write an essay with the theme, “What My Municipal Government Does Best” and it must be approximately 500 words. The deadline to submit the essay to the Mayor’s office is Friday, March 8th. Once my office receives the essay, it will be judged by our committee and then forwarded to the League of Municipalities for their consideration. The fifteen finalists will each
be awarded finalist certificates. The three winners will each be awarded $1,000 by their mayor at a hometown ceremony. For additional details, please call my office. Good luck to all participants! Resident involvement in government is an integral component in maintaining Old Bridge Township’s quality of life. The feedback, suggestions and new ideas received by residents is not only welcome but is vital in keeping Old Bridge Township heading in the right direction. There are many boards and committees that residents can volunteer on and make a difference. Please visit the township website to review all the opportunities available. Every February, people in the United States celebrate the achievements and history of African Americans as part of Black History Month. It is a time to honor the contributions and legacy of African Americans across U.S. history and society. We also observe Presidents’ Day on February 19th, which is now popularly viewed as a
day to celebrate all US presidents, both past and present. In closing, I share the township’s goal to be a place where people want to live, work and raise a family, and it is my honor to be serving as your newly elected Mayor. SOBFD FIRE FIGHTER OF THE MONTH: ANITA POMANTE
Anita is a vibrant and high-energy firefighter with an infectious enthusiasm for life. She has been a volunteer for SOBFD for 6 years and is Fire II Certified. She looks forward to 2024 where she starts her journey on learning how to drive the different apparatus in the department. During the day, Anita’s spends her time as a finish construction manager for Lennar; off-duty you can find her immersed in fixing projects around the house, working on the latest painting, photographing things out in nature, or simply hanging with her family and friends. She loves entertaining with dinner parties and going on short adventures (when time allows!) This jokester loves hanging with her
wife of 10 years, Adrienne, and relentlessly teasing her 18 year step-daughter Alexis. All while caring for their spirited Italian Greyhound, two cats, and bearded dragon. Her dependability on the job is matched by her hardworking nature, loyalty as a friend, and endless sense of humor. Anita takes great pride in serving her Old Bridge community as a volunteer firefighter and looks forward to many years of service to her beloved community.

THE TEENAGE BRAIN: IMPACTS ON LEARNING The teenage brain is complex. This crucial period of growth continues to develop into the mid20s. Much like toddlers, teenagers undergo significant growth spurts, physically, cognitively, and emotionally. During this time, they often exhibit an attitude of “I know what I’m doing,” which can lead to learning challenges. One change in the teenage brain involves the amygdala and prefrontal cortex. The amygdala, responsible for emotions, tends to be more active in teens, leading to risky behavior, pleasure seeking, and impulsivity. In contrast, the prefrontal cortex, responsible for decision-making and impulse control, is still maturing. This imbalance can affect a teenager’s ability to make informed choices, impacting their focus and dedication to schoolwork.

Teenagers need individuation and non-familial role models. They also crave inclusion among peers, which can lead them astray in pursuit of social acceptance. Stress can hinder their ability to concentrate and engage in productive study habits. To help teenagers navigate this tumultuous phase, it is important to recognize their desire to be respected, heard, and validated. Real connections with others are crucial, but often difficult to achieve during this stage. Instead of imposing consequences, allowing them to come up with their own consequences can be helpful and, when necessary, sharing what you would do in a similar situation. Guiding teenagers towards healthier behaviors by reframing them as acts of defiance against risky choices can be a powerful strategy. Encouraging them to reimagine their choices can lead to better outcomes both academically and personally.

THE POWER OF FAMILY
Living Stones by Lloyd Pulley Recently, a 30-yearplus member of our church passed into eternity. She impacted so many and was a model of a godly woman, wife, mother, and friend. Her husband, family, and our church community Lloyd Pulley, will miss her sorely. But Senior Pastor her passing made me think about some of her qualities that are so needful today! Her selflessness overflowed with joy, serving, and uplifting all around her! What a contrast to an increasingly narcissistic and godless culture dominated by broken marriages, families, and communities plagued with frustration, loneliness, and depression. Many of the world’s problems can be traced back to a selfish farmer and a drunken sailor (Adam and Noah)! But the selfless and sacrificial carpenter, the son of Mary, Son of God, came to repair our broken lives! Without that inner power from a right relationship with God, there will naturally be escalating divorce and fatherless children, bringing havoc to the next generation. Having grown up in a broken home, I can tell you
firsthand the insecurity, depression, and paranoia that plagued me. I didn’t need someone to help me to pretend that was “normal.” Thank God for a godly praying grandmother who connected me to godly mentors. They rescued me from the loss that came from not having a strong dad and a loving mother in the home. Let’s acknowledge the need for strong families, which Caroline and her husband Alex modeled. We don’t need the mantra “normal is whatever you make it.” One can’t improve the impact of children when they’re in a home with a mom and a dad who love each other and serve the family. And the strength to do that comes from a right relationship with Jesus Christ.

Joseph has been a dedicated member of the fire department since 2005, and this year marks his 20th year of service. Throughout his tenure, Joseph has shown unwavering commitment to the
community of Old Bridge. He has actively participated in various activities, such as teaching fire safety to local schools, organizing memorial services and parades, and bringing holiday joy to the town through Santa Runs. His day-to-day duties as an active member of the fire company have further highlighted his dedication. Joseph attributes his success to the unwavering support of his loved ones. His wife, Candice, and their three children, Aubrey, Mia, and Joseph IV, have been his biggest supporters throughout his journey. When he is not serving the community, Joseph enjoys spending quality time with his family, as well as cooking up family recipes and socializing with friends. Becoming the Fire Chief is an honor that Joseph does not take lightly. He is both humbled and grateful for the opportunity to lead the department in 2024. Every October, my 17-year-old daughter, Madison Szumera, kicks off preparations for her Annual Holiday Toy Drive, a tradition she started in kindergarten inspired by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Motivated to give back to children who lost everything during the storm, Madison aimed to provide them with new toys, offering a sense of normalcy and joy during the holiday season. In the first two years of the Annual Toy Drive, she donated to the RAINE Foundation and Operation
families affected by the storm’s destruction. Madison shifted her focus to Bristol-Myers-Squibb Children’s Hospital & The Children’s Hospital at St. Peter’s University Hospital following the loss of her childhood friend, Ryan, who was only nine years old when he lost his battle to cancer in 2015. This year marked her 12th Annual Toy Drive, collecting 938 toys that were donated to Bristol Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital & The Children’s Hospital at St Peter’s University Hospital. Madison’s commitment extends beyond an annual event, as she strives to impact children year-round, fueled by the support of social media, family, friends, neighbors, and St. Benedict, her former elementary school as well as her high school St John Vianney. Notably, she has established The Madison Foundation (Making A Difference in Supporting other’s Needs), signaling a new chapter in her mission to bring joy and support to others. Through this foundation, Madison aims not only to continue the annual toy drive but to extend her impact throughout the year, solidifying her dedication to making a lasting difference in the lives of others in the years to come.
