LAST MONTH OF BURROWS MANSION CELEBRATIONS

In June, the Matawan Historical Society kicked off a series of events to commemorate the town’s 300th anniversary. After the initial celebrations, these events have included a summer concert in the backyard of the Burrowes Mansion, a game of Jeopardy, the premiere of the video depicting the reenactment of the 1778 Raid at Burrowes Mansion, and most recently, the Haunted Tales of Burrowes Mansion.

As we head into the holiday season, plans are underway for the Annual Holiday Musicale Open House. It will be held on Sunday,

December 3rd from 1-4pm. The Musicale is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to experience the grandeur of the Mansion while it is beautifully decorated for the holidays. Guests can sing along to holiday music performed by Society member and Borough Councilman, Steven Russell, and the 5-part a cappella singing group, MadRegalia. Our wonderful variety of refreshments always add to the festive atmosphere.

Since this year marks the 300th anniversary, we hope to expand the decorations and display some special features. As always, the

Musicale is free, and no tickets will be required for entrance. We hope you will take the time to stop by, whether it’s to simply say hello or to stay a while and enjoy all that we have to offer. The Musicale provides a welcome reprieve from the frenzied days that are all too often a part of the season as we prepare for the holidays.

Be sure to keep a look out for other events to be posted on the Matawan Historical Society Facebook page, including an author signing and tea party, and the final reception to end our 300th anniversary celebrations.

MAYOR ALTOMONTE MESSAGE As we approach the close of this year, I am filled with immense pride for the accomplishments in Matawan. Recently, we had another fabulous Matawan Day. Our journey has been marked by many engaging Matawan Mayor recreation events, Joseph Altomonte enriching senior programs, and the exciting unfolding of new opportunities along Main Street. The success of events like Blues and Cruise Night, the new Shark 5K, and the unforgettable Matawan Days underscores the spirit of unity and celebration that defines our town.

I am proud of the transformative enhancements we’ve witnessed in our parks, a commitment I wholeheartedly pledge to carry into the future. The recent grant we obtained for Clinton Street Park will bring new life into its spaces, bringing pickleball courts, cozy benches, and inviting seating areas.

Likewise, Penniplede will soon have updated basketball courts and walkways, promising moments of joy for our community.

ens with the arrival of new businesses, each adding to Matawan.

With the holiday season’s arrival, I extend my warmest wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving to all. Following your festive meals, I invite you to join us in the 17th annual 5K Turkey Trot, a cherished tradition that unites over 600 runners in a joyous post-holiday run. Walkers, too, are welcome to partake in this certified course, which includes a delightful kiddie dash—an event that promises laughter and fun for the entire family.

ABERDEEN TOWNSHIP AWARDED $343,000 BY MONMOUTH COUNTY COMMISSIONERS FOR INCLUSIVE PARK PROJECT

Continued from page 1 their renovation of Northland Park. The township applied and received the Monmouth County Open Space Grant, which will be used to expand the original concept of Northland Park. Because of this grant, Northland Park’s renovation is now collectively funded with over $1 million dollars.

The additional money received from this grant will go towards shade structures for the new pickle ball courts, seating areas and an expansion of the playground area to include a wheelchair accessible, inclusive play area that connects to the main play structure. The grant will also be used to install a rubber safety surface (similar to the one installed at Cambridge Park) to protect the little ones who use the playground.

“We heard from residents and we wanted to make sure this playground could be used by all our children. We sincerely thank the Monmouth County Commissioners for sharing in our vision for Northland Park,” said Deputy Mayor Connie Kelley, who is on the

Township Council’s Park’s Committee.

Northland Park is currently undergoing a complete renovation and will be ready by the spring. Renovations include 6 pickle ball courts, a new expanded parking lot with proper drainage, a new basketball court, seating and eating areas, this new inclusive playground and more.

“This is one of our biggest park projects to date. Aberdeen residents have been asking for pickle ball and we are proud to bring the fastest growing sport in America to Aberdeen Township,” added Mayor Fred Tagliarini. “You may even see me this spring out on the courts serving one up.”

Aberdeen Recreation also applied for other grants that they are yet to hear back on. If awarded, they plan to add additional inclusive equipment to the playground at Northland Park.

Mayor Fred Tagliarini – Aberdeen Mayor Dear Aberdeen AAMA readers, Where has this year gone? The pages on the calendar at Town Hall have turned quickly. It’s due to the number of projects we have completed that makes the weeks and months move so fast. This year 27 roads were paved, a successful America Water Main Project, Completed 2 parks and nearly finished Northland Park that we received a $343,000 Monmouth County Grant, new Wednesday night late hours for the Building Dept, numerous family recreation programs, Senior Bus Trips, and

another wonderful Aberdeen Day. We are also proud to announce that our Cliffwood Beach Sand Replenishment Project is well on the way. Aberdeen has applied and received a Federal Grant to restore the beach without using your tax dollars.

All of this was accomplished by an experienced well seasoned Council that I am proud to serve with.

STUDENTS FIND THIS YEAR’S PSAT EASIER THAN THE PAPER-AND-PENCIL TEST The PSAT is a pivotal step in the college admissions process. Every year, students across the US anticipate this test as practice for the SAT and as a chance to qualify for a National Merit Scholarship. However, recent reports indicate this year’s digital PSAT was met with relief, with students deeming it easier than the paper-and-pencil test.

Traditionally administered on paper, the PSAT took a digital leap this year. The shift from paper to computer introduced changes in the testing experience; this year’s iteration raised some eyebrows. Students who had previously taken the PSAT reported that the digital format felt easier.

One significant change students noticed was in the math, where the digital platform offered an embedded Desmos calculator, which students who knew how to use, found more helpful than their own calculator. This feature not only enhanced graphing capabilities, but also allowed students to focus problem-solving strat-

egies, rather than getting bogged down by manual calculations needed for the former PSAT’s no-calc math section.

The transition to digital seems to have been well-received by students, with many acknowledging that it felt more user-friendly than the traditional paper-and-pencil test.

While it remains to be seen whether this trend will, the easier experience could encourage more students to take the test seriously as a steppingstone towards achieving their academic aspirations.

The reality, however, is that every PSAT is based on percentiles, which are not changing. For example, a 1350 is the 94th percentile of juniorsfor both digital and paper tests.

Since this year’s PSAT had fewer questions than it did in years past, each wrong answer will be a greater detriment to a student’s score. Fewer questions wrong will lead to that same 1350…so, in the end, it is all a wash.

We have adopted a dyslexic-friendly font, and installed Google Translate so that the entire site can be read in your language of choice.
