The Borough of Matawan hosted its 1st Memorial Day Parade on May 29, 1959 and 64 years later is still holding its Parade on Main Street. This year’s 2023 Parade is Monday, May 29th at 11 AM. With Main Street decorated in red,

white and blue; the Borough respects the tradition of its Annual Parade and invites the community to share this special day either by marching or coming out to watch. Matawan looks to honor the brave men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to their Country. Every year the Recreation Commission nominates a Matawan resident to lead the Parade. This year, the distinct honors are presented to Retired Captain Irv Nusbaum our Grand Marshall and Mr. Ralph Evans our Special Guest of Honor.

Mr. Nusbaum was drafted on April 10th, 1953. He received basic training at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. During his tour of duty, Mr. Nusbaum worked as a tank mechanic. He was part of the Korean conflict and was also stationed in France.

Mr. Evans enlisted and served between 1966-1969. He was stationed at Fort Dix where he received basic training and then was taught special skills at radio school at Fort Monmouth. After his radio training, Mr. Evans was deployed to Vietnam and

ABERDEEN HIRES NEW CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER FROM WITHIN

“Dale is a great fit for this position. He cares about the town and the residents we all serve. He is natural fit and I know he will do best by the taxpayers of Matawan and Aberdeen,” said Town Manager Bryan A. Russell, who made the initial decision to move Barshewski to the position temporarily based on his kind demeanor and work ethic.

“The Town Council is excited to see one of our own grow into this important role for our residents,” noted Councilman Greg Cannon in support of Barshewski.

Recently the fire department purchased the Turtle Deluge System. It is a brand-new system designed exclusively to fight electric vehicle fires, the first of its kind in the state. Fires in these vehicles require a different and specialized approach, requiring over four times as much water to extinguish! The turtle resembles its animal namesake and pumps over 500 gallons of water per minute. With more and more people moving to eclectic vehicles, it’s good for Matawan to be prepared just in case. However, firefighters can use it for other tactics, such as protection from exposure fires to stop it from jumping from house to house and unsupervised fires. Previously the fire department received a presentation at Borough Hall for this new piece of equipment. We also invited every fire department in the county, and everyone was impressed with the latest equipment. In speaking with the Chiefs of the Matawan Fire Department, they

wanted to go ahead and place the system’s first official order. In addition, a local business in town has promised to donate the purchase price of the new system. We received the delivery of the equipment earlier this month, and they did a brief demonstration of how the turtle works at Borough Hall. The equipment will reside on the Washington Fire Engine Truck and will be used for any fires in town or neighboring towns should it be needed. I want to thank Chief Clifton, Deputy Chiefs Lee, Kopf, and Brian Bernath for their assistance and for always looking for Matawan to be a leader in firematics.

MATAWAN COUNCIL DISCUSSES CHANGES TO THE CHICKEN ORDINANCE

On the April 4th meeting of the Matawan Borough Council, the discussion was about chickens. Brought to the floor as a workshop item, the goal was to receive input from the public and other members of Council to potential changes

to the existing ordinance. Matawan’s current ordinance dates back to 1971 and outlaws the ownership of chickens on private property. Many residents over the past several years have a requested a change to the existing ordinance. The discussion included allowing ownership of hens, roosters would be prohibited. The number of allowable hens would be based off of property square footage allowing 1 hen per 1000 square feet up to nine hens total. The potential ordinance would include proper shelter, care, and sanitization of the coup. The potential ordinance would also require 7 foot back yard setbacks from the property line for chicken coups. The potential ordinance was also reviewed by Matawan’s Animal Advisory Commission and the Environmental Commission. With a few minor changes both commissions were happy with the changes. The next step is to draft the ordinance and introduce it at a Council meeting.

MESSAGE FROM DEANA GUNN COUNCIL PRESIDENT

Investing in infrastructure is paramount to any thriving community. Not only is it important to provide residents with a return on their tax dollars, but keeping facilities up to date and ensuring the departments have the equipment to do their jobs and provide the best services possible is necessary for any successful town.

Since Matawan Mayor Joseph Altomonte tenure and our administration, investing in infrastructure has been one of our biggest priorities, and we do that in a few ways, and one of them is through our roads. But, unfortunately, it was not long ago that didn’t happen. So we appreciate your patience as you navigate around town recently while we work on paving many of the roads in the Borough. Since the beginning of our leadership, we’ve paved over 30 roads! Ensuring our public works and police and fire departments have the necessary staffing and equipment to perform their

jobs to keep the community safe is essential. Whether it’s keeping the fleets up to date, training, or exploring the latest technology, all are important for public safety and service to our residents. Another way we do that is through investment in our parks. We are proud to announce we received notice that the Borough was awarded a $74,000 grant from the 2023 NJ Department of Community Affairs for the local recreation improvement grant! The grant will improve Penniplede Park, including redoing the basketball courts and improving the walkway access from Main and Jackson Streets. In addition, earlier in April, we were notified about a $97,000 grant toward improvements we will make to the Clinton Street Park area. We remain committed to enhancing our parks yearly and encourage you to enjoy our many parks around town as warm weather arrives!

Hello residents, If you live in the I ,C, F & W sections in Aberdeen you know we certainly experienced our share of water main breaks this past winter. Obviously we requested to meet with NJ American Water. After two meetings, I am very pleased to inform you that NJAW is planing a nearly 3 million dollar capital improvement Water Main project in the I Section. Ivins Court, Idaho Lane, Idlewild Lane, Imbrook Lane and Laurie Lane are the scheduled roads to received new water mains along with 3 new fire hydrants. This improvement project should also help improve water pressure in the above mention sections of town and uninterrupted water service. The Township will then move forward with the planned paving project for this area. On another note, Cambridge Park on

will make up this park. Last year, a new concrete staircase was constructed and drainage improvements were completed. The project will be completed with a new parking area to include ADA parking.

Stage ll of Ross Field in Cliffwood Beach is also near completion with ADA walkways, fences, stairways and new illuminated Flag Pole.

The Council is proud of our Roads and Parks Program.

My best to all of you. If you should need me, contact me at Fred.Tagliarini@Aberdeennj.org

NATIONAL POLICE WEEK

National Police Week was introduced in 1962, when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. During National Police Week, the Matawan Police Department honors those who serve their communities through law enforcement and pays tribute to the officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. Each year during

the month of May, thousands of officers and observers gather at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to recognize the law enforcement officers across the U.S. who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Departments throughout the nation mark this week with various memorials and events. This year, National Police Week runs from Sunday, May 14th to Saturday, May 20th. Leading up to this week, we will be holding our Coffee with a Cop event on Saturday, May 6th from 10:00am to 1:00pm at Starbucks located in Main Street Village Center (265 Main Street, Matawan). Come meet and join your Matawan Police Officers for a cup of coffee and conversation!

I take great pride serving our residents, as we must all work together to keep the town clean and safe. I am not here to write violations, I am here to work with and

MATAWAN READIES FOR A HISTORIC EVENT

The Matawan Historical Society is pleased to announce a historic event taking place the weekend of June 3–4 in honor of the 300-year history of the Burrowes Mansion. The event will center on the time when John Burrowes, Sr., owned the house and lived there with his family throughout the American Revolutionary War. True American Patriots, they risked everything to support America’s cause for independence.

John Burrowes, Sr., a Sons of Liberty member, and his family provided Washington’s troops with essential supplies during the American Revolutionary War. The Burrowes’ residence served as the first New Jersey Militia mustering location and, in 1778, the scene of a British plot to capture Captain John Burrowes, Jr., and disgrace the family in public as a warning to those considering aiding the fight for independence. To prove

their point, the British troops set fire to the entire house’s contents, along with all the granaries and warehouses. Although the Burrowes Mansion narrowly escaped devastation, lives were lost in the conflict, and John Burrowes, Sr., was taken prisoner.

The Matawan Historical Society will recreate the British raid that took place there in 1778.

Professional reenactors from the Garden State Black Powder organization will help the Society with this live-action event scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

The weekend will also include a colonial encampment in the Burrowes Mansion backyard with the following: soldiers and tents, tomahawk throwing, and blacksmith, flintlock firings, and spinning wheel demonstrations. An authentic cannon will be on display, and three scheduled cannon firings (on Saturday only) will be included as well.

Children’s colonial games, a

scavenger hunt for collectible coins, Burrowes Mansion tours, a self-guided history walking tour will also be featured. An information booth, and a ticket/ merchandise booth will be set up on Main Street along with food vendors. The weekend of events will end on Sunday afternoon with the Matawan Regional High School Band performing patriotic songs in the Burrowes Mansion backyard. The Matawan Historical Society website will provide a schedule of events, activities, tickets, tour sign-up information, and more. returns twice this spring to Ab erdeen Township. On Monday, May 8th and again on Tuesday, June 6th, Aberdeen residents can pre-register to get their NJMVC needs taken care of right here in Cliffwood Beach.

Residents who pre-register will be able to renew their licenses and registration, drop off plates, renew handicap placards and they can receive their “REAL ID”. Residents must bring 6 points of ID, including their social security

card if they plan on getting the quired and began this past week.

Councilwoman Connie Kelley applauded this state service returning to Aberdeen, “The NJMVC van brings much needed services right to the doorstep of this community, I am so proud that we can provide this to our residents, especially our seniors.” For registration information, check for details on the front page at www.aberdeennj.org

STRATEGIES TO BATTLE FELINE IBD

Chronic vomiting or diarrhea may signal that your cat has inflammatory bowel disease [IBD].

These frequent bouts of an irritated and inflamed gastrointestinal tract occur most often in middle-aged and older cats.

If the stomach is the primary site, the condition is called gastritis. If the small intestine is inflamed, it is referred to as enteritis. And if the site is the large intestine, it is called colitis. The clinical signs of IBD can mimic that of other disorders, making diagnosis challenging without a fairly thorough work-up.

Common signs of feline IBD include vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea, bloody stool, lethargy and decreased appetite.

Inflammation of the stomach and small intestine in the cat may cause chronic vomiting. While, inflammation in the colon will likely lead to chronic diarrhea.

Making a diagnosis of feline IBD requires an extreme work-up, starting with baseline blood work, fecal exam, x-rays and an ultrasound. B vitamins - B12 and folate - are measured in the bloodstream,

as IBD hinders the absorption of these vitamins from the gastrointestinal [GI] tract. A hypoallergenic food trial may also be conducted if food allergies are suspected.

To achieve a definitive diagnosis of IBD, an intestinal or gastric biopsy is necessary, either by endoscopy or exploratory surgery.

Treatment involves suppression of the inflammatory response in the GI tract by using prescription diets and immuno-suppressive drugs. Hypoallergenic diets use a protein source new to the cat. Hydrolyzed diets are those in which the proteins are in fragments so small that they are not detected by the immune system, preventing it from overreacting.

Metronidazole is used for its antibiotic, anti-inflammatory and anti-protozoal properties.

Prebiotics and probiotics promote good bacterial populations in the GI tract, establishing good GI health. Supplementing with folate or vitamin B12 is recommended.

Although IBD is not curable, it can be controlled so that affected cats can live a comfortable life. Keeping the disease in check requires strict compliance with dietary and medical therapies.

BOOK A FREE 30-MINUTE CONSULTATION

Since the advent of COVID, most universities have gone test-optional. Since this is a relatively recent phenomenon, it leaves many parents confused.

Many universities have purportedly remained test-optional to increase diversity. What universities may not share, is that they receive more applicants when they “go test-optional.” This is an advantage to two different types of universities. First, a university that is struggling financially (after losing millions of dollars due to closures in the spring of 2020) can secure students who may not otherwise apply, thus making them more financially secure. Second, a university that is borderline competitive will show a lower admittance rate due to more applicants, which will make them ostensibly more competitive. Also, if only students in the 50th percentile or higher submit scores, their average SAT and ACT score will increase. These two factors can boost their rankings on US News and World Report. Parents should keep in mind that test

optional does not mean test blind (universities that will not even look at scores— whether the score is 400 or 1600) and that a good score will always be more attractive to a test-optional universities. Admissions offices often assume that a student who does not submit scores did not do so because the scores were bad. When Covid hit, my alma mater, for example, admitted 92% more (That’s almost double!) students who applied with scores than without. Lastly, SAT and ACT scores are often tied to scholarship money. Not submitting scores could hurt a student’s chance of affording a given university. The best practice is to call the prospective university to see their admissions policy.

HAUSER HILL FARMS OPENING

MAY 1, 2023

Happy Spring from Hauser Hill Farms! We have been busy bees here on the farm getting ready for the 2023 season! The greenhouses are filling up and we’re getting ready to start work in the fields. Some of the winter activities we have been doing are such tasks as pruning the apple, peach, nectarine, pear, and cherry trees. We have also pruned the blackberry and raspberry bushes and the grapes. The strawberries have wintered over and have already had their first weeding. The tomatoes were planted in the high tunnel greenhouse at the end of March, so that we can begin picking tomatoes earlier in the season. The peach and apple orchards are in full bloom and the bees have started their work!

If you are getting ready to plant your garden, here are some tips from the farmer himself.

1.) Before planting, it’s a good time to prepare your soil. If you haven’t added lime, you may want to consider starting with a coating of lime along with a good layer of compost. Incorporating these thoroughly before planting will increase the organic and nutrient level in the soil.

2.) Be sure to rotate your crops and

avoid planting the same crops in the same spots year after year. This will help avoid disease and crop failure.

3.) Aim for Mothers’ Day as a plant date for most crops to be safe from frost or freeze.

4.) Come see us for your flowers and vegetable plants. We carry what grows best in our area and can answer any questions you may have.

Our farm stand is located at 261 Ticetown Road, Old Bridge or find us on Facebook or Instagram. We can’t wait to see you!!

Continued from page 1 worked with the Signal Corps. During his 3-year tour of duty, Mr. Evans was sent to Germany as a Specialist E-5 and worked with the Berlin Brigade. This year, the Borough will include

its 1st ever Matawan Heroes float sponsored by Visiting Angels, a local business in town. Both honorees and their families will ride the float down Main Street to Memorial Park for a Memorial Service at 12 PM. All are welcome.

Anyone interested in participating in Matawan’s Memorial Day Parade, please contact recreation@matawanborough.com.
