BOOK SIGNING IN MATAWAN
By Steven Russell, Councilman
Matawan,
Liaison
Historical Sites Commission
As I approached Burrowes Mansion on a sunny Saturday afternoon in April, there was a line of people out the door and down to the sidewalk on Main Street. Like them, I wanted to buy my copy of the newly published second edition of The Burrowes Mansion of Matawan: and Notations on the History of Monmouth County, and get it signed by the authors. The Historic Sites Commission of Matawan published the original book in 1978. Commission chair Kurtis
Roinestad approached the author, Mary Lou Deicker, and Commission member Barry Orr to revise and update the book for publication by The Matawan Historical Society. The updates cover all the way up to the Mansion’s 300th anniversary, the reenactment of the British raid back in June, and the recent installation of the interpretive sign on the front lawn. After I attended the ceremony and sampled some delicious food at the reception, I decided to come back another day to get my copy signed. You can get a copy of the book by contacting the Historical Society at matawanhistoricalsociety.org, or by attending one of the many Society events.
DR. VIOLA THERESA (STENGER) SNOW
Dr. Viola Snow age 90, passed away May 5, 2024 at the Bailey Family Hospice Center.
Viola was born in Bronx, New York, February 20, 1934 to Joseph and Elizabeth Stenger.
Viola and her brother Joseph were sent to Ajkarendek, Hungary in 1936, while their parents continued working in the United States. In early 1940, due to the escalation of World War II, they returned to the states. On one of the last boats to leave Europe, they enjoyed their first Hershey Bars!

Vi attended Rider University; graduating with a Bachelors degree in Secondary Education from Monmouth University, West Long Branch, New Jersey in 1968. She continued on to receive her Master’s degree in Supervision and Instruction in 1971 and her Doctorate in College Teaching from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey in 1981. She was a teacher of business on the high school level in Wall Township, New Jersey and this is where Vi and George had built their home.
Viola is survived by her beloved husband of seventy years, George A, and her children (deceased)Alice Elizabeth
Snow-Robinson(Mark), Debra Karen Lewis(RJ), Kathryn Ann Dweck(Robert), George Joseph Snow(Terri); seven surviving grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Viola and George met at Rider University, married on May 28, 1954. After raising their family and retiring in 1989, from successful careers, she as the ‘Director of Certification and Field Experience at Monmouth University’, they began traveling extensively throughout the United States, Europe and the Islands. With homes in Cape Cod and Florida, they enjoyed many years with the extended family and grandchildren, finally settling in St. Augustine.

ELLIE MENTAL HEALTH’S GUIDE TO HEALING
June is a vibrant month filled with significant events and observances. It marks PRIDE month, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community, the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. June is also PTSD Awareness Month, highlighting a crucial mental health issue. PTSD, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, can manifest in various ways. Individuals with PTSD may experience flashbacks, nightmares, or severe anxiety related to a traumatic event. Trauma triggers flight, fight, or freeze responses in the nervous system. After an event, the nervous system can remain stuck, perceiving a constant, invisible fire alarm. Common symptoms include hypervigilance, easily being startled, self-destructive behaviors, substance abuse, chronic pain, and disconnection from others. Although summer can be positive, it can also bring PTSD triggers. Recognizing these signs is the first step
in addressing PTSD. Effective therapies include Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). These therapies help process traumatic memories and reduce their impact. Self-care practices are also vital. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and sufficient sleep improve well-being. Mindfulness techniques, such as meditation and deep breathing, help manage stress. Building a strong support network provides emotional support and reduces isolation.
This June, as we celebrate PRIDE, the summer solstice, and Juneteenth, let’s also raise awareness about PTSD. Understanding and supporting those affected by PTSD can significantly aid their journey to recovery. Ellie Mental Health is now open in Old Bridge, accepting most major insurances, and looks forward to serving the community.
