YEAR AT ANNUAL MAC AWARDS & BOARD INSTALLATION DINNER

The Matawan-Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce held its 5th Annual MAC Awards and Board Installation Dinner to recognize extraordinary individuals and businesses that have made an impact on others, the Chamber, a n d / or t h e c om mu n it y.

Chamber President Jeff Pantelas welcomed everyone, stating “It’s the Chamber’s 55th year and it has grown to nearly 200 members today! Its success is due in part to our willingness to help each other by giving advice, guidance, and support.”

In honor of the anniversary, Assemblyman Clifton sent a special proclamation, a slide show of past Chamber projects, events, and activities was shown, and member businesses and organizations serving the community for 50 plus years were

given special recognition certificates. Several members were acknowledged too, for achieving a Legacy membership level of 10 or more years in MACOC. Board of Director installations of three members were conducted by Matawan Mayor Joe Altomonte and Aberdeen Mayor Fred Tagliarini, and certificates of appreciation were given to two departing members acknowledging their service and contributions.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Chamber MAC Awards to six distinguished individuals and businesses. The recipients were: Erika Boyer, Edward Jones – Chamber Member of the Year; Alcoeur Gardens, Aberdeen – Chamber Business of the Year; VoiceNEXT – Excellence in

Community Service; OceanFirst Matawan – Chamber President’s Special Recognition.

ProFysio Physical Therapy received Spirit of Aberdeen with a proclamation from Mayor Tagliarini. Mayor Altomonte presented Spirit of Matawan and a proclamation to Jay LoBosco.

Individual citations were also given to MAC Award recipients during a presentation from Assemblywoman Vickie Flynn.

The night ended with our thank you to several businesses for donating door prizes, and gratitude to our sponsors whose generosity helped make the evening possible: Alcoeur Gardens, Spring Hills Matawan, ProFysio Physical Therapy, McDonald’s Aberdeen, and Calta Taxes & Financial Services.

MAYOR ALTOMONTE MESSAGE The summer is upon us, and we have much to look forward to in the Borough!

In my administration’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving our parks, I’m proud to announce we Matawan Mayor recently received Joseph Altomonte two grants to make new improvements at both Penniplede and Clinton Street Parks. We received a $74,000 grant from the NJ Department of Community Affairs, which will be put towards redoing the basketball courts and improving the walkway access from Main and Jackson Streets. A grant from the County for $97,000 will allow us to improve parking and access to the park and the Henry Hudson trail. We remain dedicated to creating parks for our community to enjoy!

With the warmer weather finally here, we encourage our residents to enjoy one of Matawan’s greatest natural resources, Lake Lefferts! Whether you’re walking by to admire the view on the way to Main

Street or want to rent a canoe and enjoy time on the lake, I hope you enjoy the view. Boat rentals will begin on Memorial Day weekend and go through Labor Day. In addition, I hope you’ll join me at Lake Lefferts on July 2nd for our annual firework extravaganza as we celebrate the Fourth of July. This event is always a hit around the lake, with a concert, food, and a spectacular fireworks show ending the evening. It’s an event not to be missed and tons of fun!

Matawan Borough Police Department, and the Aberdeen Township Police Department in a combined effort with the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District, want to remind parents and students of the mandatory bicycles laws in place to keep our children safe. More and more people are out on bicycles – including teens and young adults. To that end we have been receiving multiple complaints of our children disregarding these laws.

Children riding bicycles is a positive physical activity. However, it is important to be aware of potential dangers associated with this activity, and have conversations with your children about possible consequences of not wearing helmets. New Jersey state law requires that parents be held responsible for minors who are not wearing a helmet.

Those parents face fines between $25 to $100 if their child rides a bicycle without a helmet. The most common complaint/ violation that we are receiving is bicyclists riding in the middle of the roadways.

State law states that every person riding a bicycle on a roadway shall ride as near

Unfortunately, each year our officers respond to traffic collisions involving bicyclists and pedestrians. Many times, we find the primary collision factor was the unsafe operation of a bicycle and neglecting to pay attention to the traffic around them. It has always been our goal to eliminate injuries and fatalities on our roadways; however, this is not possible without your help.

We have attached a list of violations related to bicycle operations. This is a reminder of the existing state law regarding the operation of bicycles because we want your children to remain safe.

We are asking you to discuss these laws with your children and remind them of their responsibilities as bicyclists.

Both the Matawan and Aberdeen Police Departments are committed to our children’s safety as they travel on our streets. Together, let’s do our part to make it as safe for our children as possible.

SHADE TREE COMMISSION HOSTS ARBOR DAY EVENT

On April 29, 2023 the Matawan Shade Tree Commission held their annual Arbor Day Event. The rainy weather was great for trees but forced the event inside this year. That however didn’t stop a large number of attendees coming for the tree dedication and free saplings provided by the NJ Division of Forestry.

This year the commission distribut-

ed free saplings of Swamp Oak, Bur Oak, Chestnut Oak and Black Walnut.

The Shade Tree Commission also planted a Cherry Tree on the front Lawn of Borough Hall. This tree was dedicated to the winners of the Commission annual poster contest held at Ravine Drive School. Entrants create posters on “Why Trees Matter”. The Commission judges and choses winners from each grade. Winners receive their names on the tree dedication plaque and receive a $25 gift Card. This year winners were Aiden Duder, Lyla Feiles, Morgan Biancone, and Mya Walden. The event ended with Mayor Altomonte reading the Boroughs Arbor Proclamation. Tree saplings are still available and can be picked up In the Borough Hall Lobby.

MESSAGE FROM DEANA GUNN COUNCIL PRESIDENT We’v e h a d a busy spring around the Borough. I will share some highlights of the two departments I am the liaison to, police and economic business development.

First, for the police, we had a very successful coffee with a copy on May 6th at Starbucks in Matawan, and we thank them for hosting. Many stopped by and spoke with the men and women of the police force. Community policing is a priority for the department and the Borough, and several events are planned throughout the year. Next up, we hope you’ll stop by the annual Aberdeen versus Matawan PBA softball game on June 24th at 7 pm at Oak Shades. Secondly, we are proud to celebrate Ptl. Lyndsay Merola for coming in first place in the New Jersey Women in Law Enforcement firearms competition, beating out twenty other counties!

As it relates to Economic Business Development, earlier in May, the Mayor,

Councilmen Livesey, Russell, and I attended the annual Aberdeen Matawan Chamber of Commerce Dinner and celebrated the 55th anniversary of the Chamber. It was a wonderful night that spotlighted many of our businesses, nonprofits, and volunteers that made it all happen. We were honored to recognize one of our residents, Jay LoBosco, for his time, energy, and presence with the Spirit of Matawan Award for his time and dedication to the Economic Business Development Commission and his efforts in bringing Blues and Cruise to downtown Matawan. Celebrating the many people who make our community so wonderful was a wonderful night!

A MESSAGE FROM RYAN L. MICHELSON, MPA Business Administrator of Matawan After three months of welcoming hospitality from the Matawan community as the Borough’s new Business Administrator, I can see why one would be proud to call Matawan their home.

Before coming to Matawan, I served in a similarly sized small town. There is absolutely nothing like the sense of community fostered amongst the residents, businesses, and visitors in a small town.

Matawan has much to cherish, including its rich history, like the Burrowes Mansion Museum celebrating its 300th Anniversary June 2nd – 4th. In addition, the Borough has the precious gems of not one but two lakes, where on Lake Lefferts, we will host the Father’s Day Fishing Derby Sunday, June 18th. All are leading up to the Independence Day Celebration on July 2nd, with fireworks launched from Matawan First Presbyterian Church offering spectacular views around Lake Lefferts.

I would be remiss, not to mention

the true heart of the community, the people. I have observed some of the most kind and passionate advocates for their community. I have been so fortunate to have the leadership of Mayor Joseph Altomonte and Council President Deana Gunn as they help acclimate me to my new surroundings and gain a deeper understanding of the issues that impact the Borough. One of the most critical tasks of an Administrator is to work with the Finance Committee, chaired by Councilman Charlie Ross, and our CFO, Nicole Schneeberger, to prepare a budget that meets the most critical demands of the Borough and plans for our community’s future infrastructure. Without these folks, our employees, professionals, and committed residents, the past few months would have been a much different experience.

ABERDEEN INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION: JULY 1ST, SAVE THE DATE! Aberdeen Township’s Annual Independence Day Celebration is returning on July 1st! This event has been a beloved tradition for many years, and this year promises to be just as fun-filled as our previous Independence Day Celebrations.

Starting at 5pm, the event will be headlined by live band Str8 Up! who specializes in a mixture of musical genres, ensuring there will be something for everyone to enjoy. In addition to the live band, there will be a DJ providing music throughout the night, as well as plenty of activities for kids and adults alike. Face painting and bounce houses will be set up, adding an extra level of fun for the younger crowd. Up to 10 food trucks will be on-site offering delicious options for dinner and dessert.

The annual fireworks display will begin around 9:00PM. Residents can expect a stunning and colorful show, lighting up the sky and adding to the festive atmosphere.

Veterans Memorial Park has limited parking. As in years past, to make getting to and from the event easier, shuttles will be available from LA

Fitness. This will ensure that everyone can enjoy the celebration without worrying about road closures or parking.

“This is the best night of the year in Aberdeen,” said Councilwoman Margaret Montone. “There is nothing better than seeing all of those smiling faces during our Annual Independence Day Celebration.”

For those attending, it is recommended that they bring their own chairs, blankets, and mosquito repellent.

This will ensure a comfortable and enjoyable evening. Parents can also rest assured that the spray park will remain open for the kids until 8pm.

Overall, Aberdeen Township’s Annual Independence Day Celebration is set to be a fantastic event for everyone in the community. With a great mix of music, activities, and food, this is the perfect way to celebrate the birth of our nation with family and friends. So mark your calendars and join us for a night of fun and excitement!

START PREPARING FOR COLLEGE ADMISSIONS NOW! Students should start activities for the college admissions process in 9th grade. This early start considers time to create a plan that allows for changes to the program.

Course Selection: In 9th grade, a student should start looking at the courses available over the next four years and create a plan of study for each year. A student can maximize his/her GPA and explore classes to support potential college majors.

Exploring Majors: A student should start thinking about college majors. The student can explore areas of interest and various majors and careers that support those interests through his/her studies, job shadowing, and internships.

Extracurriculars: 9th grade is also the time for a student to start finding his/her passion and delve into new areas of study and interests. Colleges take a holistic approach when evaluating a student’s application. Admission officers want to know that a student is using his/her free time wisely by pursuing a passion, making a difference, or exploring new

experiences through clubs, sports, and volunteer opportunities. These activities can help students become more self-aware, which can also be a foundation for the student’s college essays.

All of these steps help a student prepare for college admissions. The experiences, the academics, successes, and failures help define the college applicant. If a student waits until he/she is a rising senior to start this journey, the student will have limited time to gain these experiences. Therefore, we recommend students work with an experienced college advisor to help create a plan to optimize opportunities that support acceptances into best-fit universities.

Monday May 29th is our annual Memorial Day Parade. The parade route will start at Washington and Main St. at 11am. Keep an eye out for our first ever Hero Float, generously sponsored by Visiting Angels of Matawan (5 Raving Drive). Our Grand Marshall, Special Guest of Honor, and their families will be on board.

Memorial Day Ceremony to follow at 12pm at Memorial Park on Main St. Join us for a special presentation of the Poet of the American Revolution, Philip Freneau at the Matawan Aberdeen Regional High School on Wednesday May 31st. The event starts at 7pm and is free to the public. This event is sponsored

by Matawan Recreation in conjunction with the Matawan Historical Society.

Mark your calendars for June 10th at 10am for our annual paper shredding event. This will be located at the Matawan Train Station parking lot # 1.

Recycling will be there until the truck fills up! 100 lbs. per car is the max.

Join us Sunday, June 18th for our Annual Fishing Derby at Lake Lefferts.

Our Animal Advisory Committee has been very busy working on a Trap, Neuter, Release (TNR) ordinance and obtaining a sponsor for the TNR program. We proudly announce Council approved both the TNR Ordinance and the Monmouth County SPCA (MCSPCA) as Sponsor. TNR is a humane approach to addressing Matawan’s community cat overpopulation. TNR serves to improve the lives of community cats, addresses community concerns, and stabilizes the population of outside cats.

MCSPCA’S Executive Director, Ross Licitra, will be a guest speaker at a meeting to be held on Thursday, June 15th, @ 7 pm in the Council Meeting Room, Borough Hall, Matawan.

The 2nd Annual Summer Roundup Charity Car Show will be held at All American Ford in Old Bridge, New Jersey and will take place on Sunday, June 11th from 9AM to 3PM, with a rain date scheduled for Sunday, June 25th.

We ’ r e g e t t i n g closer and closer to SUMMER, which means that MAPL’s Summer Reading Pro g r am i s ab out to begin! This year’s theme is “My Summer is Booked… Meet me at MAPL!” and we will be celebrating our love of reading all summer long.

Join us on Saturday, June 24th for our Kick-off Party. Housel Fun & Fitness will be providing interactive fitness shows at 10am and 11:30am for children ages 4-10, and there will be a fun drop-in craft for children of all ages. Stop by to sign up and start logging your books to get raffle tickets and win prizes!

On Saturday, July 15th, join us to celebrate the half-way mark of summer reading with a library pajama party! Come in your PJs, make a craft, play games, and more!

On Saturday, August 19th, we say goodbye to our Summer Reading program with an indoor carnival – come to the library to play some games and win some prizes!

PROFYSIO PHYSICAL THERAPY: A DECADE OF COMPASSIONATE CARE AND EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE In 2013, Dr. John P. Scafidi and Dr. Leonard J. Somarriba set out to create an outpatient physical therapy company that would offer patients compassionate, high quality physical therapy and outstanding customer service. But, their journey began at the University of Connecticut where they would train together, graduate, and become licensed in 2006. It was during their undergraduate education that the seeds of private practIce were planted. With their shared passions for business and helping people it seemed that a partnership might be a possibility.

After graduation, Dr’s John and Lenny would spend several years as leading practitioners for other physical therapy companies. They remained close friends and during their tenure as employees they would share experiences with one another about the shortcomings of the most common outpatient physical therapy business models. Namely, they had grown tired of the all too common, low value outpatient physical therapy model where visit volume and profits were prioritized above clinical

outcomes and service for patients.

The young entrepreneurs would eventually open the doors of the first ProFysio Physical Therapy in Aberdeen in September 2013. Today, nearly 10 years later, ProFysio Physical Therapy has grown to 5 locations and nearly 50 employees in Aberdeen, East Brunswick, Edison, Old Bridge, and Middletown.

The cornerstone of a great business is its wonderful team members and ProFysio is no exception. Every day, the wonderful staff at ProFysio dedicates themselves to serving our patients to the best of their ability. Success would not be possible without our wonderful patients.
