THE OLDEST HOUSE IN MATAWAN

If you are out and about in Matawan, there’s a newly refurbished historical marker at the oldest house in Matawan, the Hawkins House. Built in 1697, the house was as a tavern operated by Thomas and Phoebe Hunn. Local poet Philip Freneau and

other patriots would meet there. If you’re socializing at nearby Brass Rail Bar and Grill on 79, it’s an extremely short (and careful) walk down Mill Road to see the house and marker. It’s one of the few re maining early Dutch houses in New Jersey. It’s also accessible from Sapphire Lane, but be mindful of walking on or crossing Mill Road. Look for more refurbished historical markers in the future, as you explore the amazing history of Matawan.

MATAWAN MAYOR ALTOMONTE MESSAGE

Summer is here! If you haven’t already, be sure to spend some time at Lake Lefferts.

The newly installed dock is a splendid addition to Matawan’s cherished recreational spots. Nestled amidst the serene surroundings, the dock offers an ideal setting for those who want to fish.

The seating areas offer unobstructed lake vistas, creating an inviting space for reading, meditation, or enjoying the gentle breeze.

The dock also serves as a place to appreciate the lake’s natural beauty. The panoramic views from the dock capture the essence of Lake Lefferts. Whether it’s watching the sunrise or sunset, the dock promises a visual treat.

Additionally, Lake Lefferts remains a hub for water activities. Canoes and kayaks are available for rent on the weekends through Labor Day, allowing residents and visitors to explore the lake differently. Paddling through the calm waters, visitors can experience the tranquility and scenic beauty up close.

Restore Matawan is dedicated to enhancing our parks for the community. The improvements at Lake Lefferts reflect our ongoing commitment to creating inviting spaces where residents can connect with nature and each other. I want to remind everyone to please be good stewards of the lake, clean up after yourselves, put litter in the proper place, and clean up after pets so we can all enjoy them. We strive to bring new enhancements each year, ensuring our parks remain vibrant and accessible for everyone.

A MESSAGE FROM THE MATAWAN ABERDEEN FIRST AID SQUAD

As we reach the midpoint of the year, we at the Matawan-Aberdeen First Aid Squad are thrilled to reflect on one of our most successful years in community outreach. Our dedication to serving the Matawan and Aberdeen communities has been unwavering, and this year has been a testament to that commitment. In addition to attending our community events, we have expanded our efforts by visiting numerous schools in the Matawan-Aberdeen area. We’ve had the privilege of teaching kids of all ages about Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the vital role we play in their safety. From high school students to preschoolers, we’ve shown them the equipment we use and ex plained how we are there to help in times of need, and teach them about how reward ing it is to work in the EMS field. The curi osity and enthusiasm of these young minds have been incredibly rewarding for us. We are eager to continue building strong connections within our commu nity and to remain a reliable presence for Matawan, Aberdeen, and the surrounding towns 24/7. Our ability to do so is heavily dependent on the generosity of our sup porters. As a non-billing organization,

every dollar we receive through donations directly impacts our ability to serve. If our services have ever helped you, your neighbor, your family or if you simply wish to support a cornerstone of our community, we ask for your continued support. Please look out for a “Dear Neighbor” letter in your mail from us, our annual fund drive letters or you can donate by visiting our website at www.mafirstaid.org/donate

THE 1916 SHARK ATTACKS STILL OF INTEREST TODAY STARBUCKS TO OPEN IN CLIFFWOOD SHOPPING PLAZA

Every summer, thoughts of things we enjoy most about the season come to mind: beach trips, sunshine, picnics, barbecues, and vacations. Still, each summer, the Matawan Historical Society is greeted with a surge of inquiries and requests for details regarding the unbelievable incident that rocked Matawan and the Jersey Shore in July 1916 - the shark attacks in 1916. The tales of the shark attacks at Beach Haven, Spring Lake, and Matawan spurred terror and fear among visitors and residents that summer. Once word spread about two deaths from shark attacks in Beach Haven and Spring Lake, the Jersey Shore went on high alert. Nothing, however, could

have prepared people for the news that a shark had attacked swimmers in Matawan Creek on the sweltering July 12th day. Somehow, a shark entered Raritan Bay from the Atlantic and traveled to Matawan Creek. There, it killed a young boy named Lester Stillwell while he and a group of boys were swimming in the creek at the Wycoff dock. Shortly after, it attacked Stanley Fisher who was helping in the search effort for Lester’s remains. Fisher survived the attack but passed away while on the train en route to the hospital. The last victim, who was swimming downstream by a dock, escaped from the shark with a bite of his leg. Since then, numerous scientists, academics, and historians have researched, investigated, and written about it — including Matawan historian Al Savolaine in his book Stanley Fisher: Shark Attack Hero of a Bygone Age. The attacks have inspired such works as Jaws by Peter Benchley, the Spielberg Jaws movie, and The Discovery Channel Shark Week series. Although debated as to whether one shark or more terrorized everyone in the summer of 1916, the shark attacks remain a source of interest and intrigue 108 years later.

Exciting news is brewing in Cliffwood Beach as a new Starbucks is set to open its doors in the Cliffwood Shopping Plaza this August. The arrival of the popular coffeehouse chain marks the final piece of the puzzle, making the shopping plaza fully occupied with no vacancies. Residents and visitors alike can look forward to enjoying their favorite Starbucks beverages, pastries, and snacks in the heart of Cliffwood and Cliffwood Beach. Mayor Fred Tagliarini expressed his enthusiasm about the latest addition to the community hub. “We are thrilled to welcome Starbucks to the Cliffwood Shopping Plaza,” Mayor Tagliarini

said. “Their presence here signifies a significant milestone for our community, turning the shopping center into a bustling hub where residents can shop, dine, workout and socialize.”

The Cliffwood Shopping Plaza, already home to a variety of stores and services, has become a popular destination for locals. The addition of Starbucks is expected to enhance the shopping experience, attracting more visitors and encouraging community interaction.

Starbucks’ commitment to creating a warm and inviting environment aligns perfectly with the goals of the Cliffwood Shopping Plaza. Patrons can anticipate not only great coffee but also a lounge that offers them to meet, work and relax. As the anticipated August opening approaches, the excitement continues to build. The new Starbucks is set to become a favorite spot for early morning pick-me-ups, afternoon meetings, and leisurely evening catch-ups. Stay tuned for more updates on the grand opening event, and get ready to sip and savor at the new Starbucks in Cliffwood Shopping Plaza.

CLIFFWOOD PLAZA REVITALIZED: A COMMUNITY TRIUMPH

Aberdeen Township is witnessing a remarkable transformation, and nowhere is this more evident than at the Cliffwood Shopping Plaza on Route 35. After years of dormancy following the closure of A&P in 2015, the plaza has been rejuvenated, becoming a vibrant hub for the community. This revitalization is a testament to the resilience and determination of our town council and the unwavering support of our residents.

The most notable addition to the shopping plaza is the new Sprouts Farmers Market, which celebrated its grand opening on June 7th. Sprouts brings a fresh, healthy grocery option to our community, offering a wide range of natural and organic products. This opening marks a significant milestone in our efforts to revitalize the area, providing both economic benefits and a much-needed service to our residents. Adding to this momentum, I am excited to announce that Starbucks will be opening a store in the corner of the shopping plaza, slated for an August opening.

This new Starbucks will not only offer a convenient spot for coffee lovers but will also serve as a welcoming community gathering place. We anticipate that this addition will attract more visitors to the plaza, further boosting local businesses. In recent years, the Cliffwood Shopping Plaza has seen a flurry of activity. LA Fitness opened a Signature Club Fitness Center, providing state-of-the-art facilities for our health-conscious residents. Wing Spot and Jersey Mike’s have also set up shop, offering diverse food that are quick bites to eat. These new tenants, along with others, have collectively breathed new life into the plaza. What was once considered a doomed property is now a thriving commercial center, benefiting the Cliffwood and Cliffwood Beach areas of our town. The transformation of the Cliffwood Shopping Plaza stands as a proud achievement for Aberdeen Township, demonstrating what can be accomplished through vision, collaboration, and community support. Mayor Tagliarini and town council are committed to continuing this progress, ensuring that Aberdeen remains a great place to live, work, and shop.

TODAY’S HIGH SCHOOLER: HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?

Today, it seems everything in high schoolers’ life is extreme—studies and extracurriculars require much more time commitment than was required when today’s parents were teens. With academics, sports, and jobs all demanding time, it’s essential to find a balance that maintains mental well-being.

Prioritizing is crucial. Academics should take precedence; good grades are key to opportunity. That said, my alma mater—the now-defunct MCHS, one of 2 predecessors of OBHS—offered 2 AP classes in 1993. Now OBHS offers 33 dual-enrollment courses (including APs), which students take to earn credit in HS and college. While these courses offer opportunity, they also overload students who bite off more than they can chew.

Students learn great life lessons outside of school but must be smart about their time. Many students dance competitively, which requires many hours of dedicated practice. Athletes often play on their HS and travel team. Allocating time for studying, training, and working ensures no areas are neglected.

Time management is vital. Students can break down their tasks into manageable parts by never studying for more than 2 hours straight and taking a half hour break for every 2 hours studied. This improves productivity and retention. Time for relaxation is essential to avoid burnout.

Students should communicate with teachers, coaches, and employers about their commitments. Supportive adults can offer guidance, helping students navigate their responsibilities. Seeking advice from peers who balance commitments can provide further support.

If students find themselves exhausted, stressed, or falling behind, it may be necessary to reassess their schedule. Prioritizing mental health is paramount, and sometimes means cutting back on activities.

HS students can balance studies, sports, and work by prioritizing, managing their time, communicating, and recognizing their limits. Thus, they can ensure a fulfilling high school experience.
