ABERDEEN CAR WASH CELEBRATES 60 YEARS OF SERVICE

its commitment to providing exceptional customer service and maintaining a pristine shine for countless vehicles.

Bud and Jason took the reins of Aberdeen Car wash in 2011, and their passion for the business quickly became evident.

Aberdeen Car wash, a beloved full-service car wash nestled in the heart of Aberdeen Township, proudly celebrates its 61 year anniversary. Since its establishment in 1962, Aberdeen Car wash has been a trusted name in the community, offering top-notch interior and exterior cleaning services all while continuing to evolve with the times. Under the ownership of Bud and Jason Patel for the past 12 years, the car wash has continued to uphold

“I grew up being a die-hard car fanatic, as well as my dad” Jason says, “but we knew after we took over, the aging facility needed an overhaul.” They embarked on a journey to revitalize and modernize the facility while honoring it’s rich history. Through their dedicated efforts, the car wash now boasts state-of-the-art equipment, all environmentally conscious cleaning products and a team of skilled professionals, ensuring every vehicle receives the care and attention it deserves.

“As we focused on renovating our business, a major portion

of my mission was to focus on the best quality we could offer” Jason says. “It may sound cliche, but I grew up learning the food business my father was in for 25 years, where quality meant everything. The car wash is no different, except everything revolves on a thousand moving parts and science at once.”

Not much has changed in the concept of washing a car over the past 60 years, but the industry itself has continued to evolve to meet changing customer and automotive needs.

“We strive to create a positive experience for our customers, ensuring their vehicles receive the utmost care and attention without burdening their wallets in this current economy. We still have many more upgrades scheduled for 2023 that we can’t wait to share” Jason said.

MAYOR ALTOMONTE MESSAGE

We’ve had an exciting couple of months in the Borough with events and celebrations, and it has been great to see so many people out and about enjoying our town. The once-in-a-lifetime celebration of the 300th Anniversary of the Burrowes Mansion was a massive success! First, we were thankful to have Monmouth County Commissioner Lillian Burry, the first woman elected in Matawan, stop by, and we thanked her for all she did to preserve the Burrowes Mansion. I was proud to see over 2,000 people lining our streets to watch the re-enactment, participate in the encampment behind the mansion, tour the mansion, and learn about our rich history. Throughout the years, it has been a priority for my administration to restore the mansion and honor our unique history of the Borough while moving the town forward.

The weekend was only possible because of months of planning, and I want to

thank all of our many volunteers, the Matawan Historical Society; Kuris Roinstead, our town historian; Cathy Zavorskas, the President of the MHS; our generous sponsors; the Black Powder group for the encampment and re-enactment, and anyone who made this weekend a success. It couldn’t have happened without countless hours of dedication from people who truly care about Matawan, and I’m grateful. If you missed it, the Matawan Historical Society recorded the event, and it will be available for viewing at an upcoming date with the Matawan Historical Society, so please look for an announcement coming soon. If I can help with anything, please get in touch with me at joseph.altomonte@ matawanborough.com

MAYOR TAGLIARINI MESSAGE

I could not be more proud of my fellow Council Members, Town Manager and Department Managers. To steal an old expression, “Aberdeen is firing on all cylinders”. In 2023, we stayed committed to a Road Project that this administration started in the year 2010. This is the 14 consecutive years of repairing Aberdeen Roads. We have done so in a very fair way, including all sections of our Town. We appropriated over 4 million dollars in 2022 for roads improvements. We are very proud of our Recreation Director and staff for offering over 220 programs to all ages. Seniors have a variety of fitness programs, bus trips and weekly social events. Our youth Summer Camp Program is now a full day camp. They utilize the Middle School Gym, local

certs on Tuesday. We also host a fantastic Independence Day Fireworks celebration. Let’s not forget our ever popular Aberdeen Day to be held Sept 23rd,2023.

On the business front, Aberdeen continues to be very business friendly. The Aberdeen Economic Business Council, an arm of the Town Council, continues to be the best advocate for new businesses to our Town.

Just announced, Sprouts Market will be joining LA Fitness and retailers on Rt 35. ProFysio expanded and stayed in Aberdeen. Alternate Ending Brewer chose Aberdeen to open another restaurant called Lita’s. Countless number of new businesses are now calling Aberdeen home. Thanks to all of you for making Aberdeen your home and creating a community that we are so proud of.

The Town Council is honored to serve you. Never hesitate to reach out to us with your concerns.

Best regards,

A MESSAGE FROM RYAN L. MICHELSON, MPA

Business Administrator of Matawan

While some towns slow down in the summer, Matawan has plenty of things going on. Just this past month, we began hosting a Farmer’s Market on Fridays until October from 2 pm to 7 pm at the Matawan Municipal Community Center on 201 Broad St. It’s a rather tempting opportunity for those of us that work only steps away, so I encourage the residents to beat me to the vendors for the delectable produce and other crafted goods as a way to safeguard my wallet and waistline. Another event that was such a tremendous success was the celebration of the Burrowes Mansion’s important milestone of its 300th year. The Burrowes Mansion operates as a local history museum under the Matawan Historical Society and provides a window into yesteryear for the residents and all those that visit our Borough. The Historical Society certainly did not let us down with this once-in-alifetime event. The reenactment on Main

Street felt as if I was transported back in time and even had some special guest actors, including Mayor Joseph Altomonte, Councilmen Brian Livesey and Stephen Russel, and former Councilman John Lazar(Photo Credit: Council President Deana Gunn). It is not every town that elected officials, past and present, get this engaged in their community, one of the many reasons I’m thankful to be part of the Matawan community. Last month we celebrated Matawan’s History; this month, we celebrate our nation, particularly on July 2nd, with our Independence Day Celebration, with fireworks launched from Matawan First Presbyterian Church offering spectacular views around Lake Lefferts, rain date July 8th.

THE 300TH CELEBRATION CONTINUES

The fanfare of celebrating the 300th anniversary of the Burrowes Mansion that drew so many people to downtown Matawan on the weekend of June 4th and 5th will continue! A brass quintet concert will take place in the backyard of the Mansion at 94 Main Street on Saturday, August 5 at 4 PM. Five professional brass players will provide music by John Philip Sousa, Fats Waller, George Gershwin, Giovanni Gabrieli, Paul Dukas, Edward Elgar, Henry Mancini, W. C. Handy, J. S. Bach, John Williams, and Kurt Weill. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be indoors at Borough Hall, 201 Broad Street. Although it was so much fun dressing up as the Corn King at the reenactment back in June, I won’t be in my 18th century costume, but I will be playing the tuba. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on the lawn behind the Mansion and enjoy a free concert!

MATAWAN CELEBRATION WAS A HISTORIC DAY

and Ptl. Poland! Wishing you a safe and successful career serving the residents of Matawan. ( reprinted with permission from Matawan Police Department )

It isn’t often that we get to witness history in the making. Yet, on Saturday, June 3rd, the Matawan Historical Society with assistance from the Borough of Matawan held a two-day event that provided just that. The celebration honored the 300-year history of the Burrowes Mansion (1723-2023).

On the Saturday, a section of Main Street was transformed back to the colonial days of the American Revolutionary War. The Burrowes Mansion served as the centerpiece with a colonial encampment constructed in the backyard. The intention was to recreate the day in 1778, when British troops raided the

Burrowes Mansion to capture Captain John Burrowes, Jr. and make examples of the family to all who dared support the cause for independence.

The Historical Society brought us back to that day with a skillfully staged simulation of the raid and the skirmish, assisted by Garden State Black Powder Association reenactors and members of the Matawan Historical Society. During the fight, both British loyalists and colonial patriots sustained wounds and casualties. Captain Burrowes was not arrested, but his wife was hurt, and his father and others were taken prisoner.

The recreation of this momen-

tous day in Matawan’s history served as an example of the Burrowes’ bravery, persistence, fortitude, and resolve, as well as that of many others who understood that they risked financial ruin, destruction of their homes and other possessions, injuries, and even death in the name of independence. Gunfire, cannon firings, and those in colonial attire made the transformation feel real, and the importance of the day compelling, giving the more than 1000 visitors a sense that they played a part in making this day a historic one for Matawan.

USE GOOD JUDGMENT TO KEEP SUMMER FUN SAFE

Summertime means more playtime outside, but higher temperatures mean increased risks for our furry friends.

Be vigilant to avoid overheating, sunburn and dehydration for our pets as well as ourselves. Pets do not sweat and can become overheated easily. Pets drink water and pant to bring down their body temperature.

A dog’s normal temperature is from 101 degrees to 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Heatstroke results when the pet cannot regulate his body temperature, and it rises to 105 degrees or higher. Signs of heat exhaustion are excessive panting, labored breathing, drooling, bright red gums and weakness.

If your pet shows sign of heat exhaustion, move him to a cool area, place a cool damp towel over him, give him ice chips and cool water to drink, apply rubbing alcohol to the pads on his feet and get him to the vet ASAP.

Overweight pets, older pets, pets with

respiratory problems or short-nosed dogs such as bulldogs, pugs, and boxers are more prone to exhibiting problems in the heat.

Limit exercising outdoors to early morning hours or evening hours.

While playing outside make sure cool drinking water is available as well as access to shade. Pets can get sunburn, and it is best to use a pet friendly sunscreen. White-coated pets are more susceptible to skin cancer.

Pay attention to hot streets and sidewalks. The foot pads of pets are not tough, but, in fact, they can burn and blister. A good rule to follow, is to put your hand on the pavement: If it is too hot for us, it is too hot for them. Walking on the grass is a good way to go.

Cookouts are fun but be careful your pets don’t come in contact with a hot grill or ingest the grease dripping, which may cause gastroenteritis. Do not give dogs corn on the cob, as the cob may get lodged in the stomach or intestine, causing a blockage necessitating surgery.

Have a fun, safe summer!

IS AN SAT/ACT CLASS OR PRIVATE LESSONS BETTER FOR MY CHILD?

Parents often ask whether I recommend class or private lessons for their child. There are 3 (or 4) criteria to consider.

(1) What is the student’s PSAT/SAT/ ACT baseline score?

If the student’s score is too low, the class will move too quickly. If the student’s score is too high, the class will run too slowly. For students scoring very high or very low, private lessons are recommended. Otherwise, the class is fine.

(2) What is the difference between the student’s math and reading/writing and language score?

If the student is much stronger in one content area than the other, the weaker area should be targeted with private lessons. If a student’s score is close, the class is fine.

(3) Does the student need to be held closely accountable?

If a student needs more oversight to ensure work is completed, private lessons are better. If a student will do his/her homework without needing to be held

closely accountable, the class is fine.

If all 3 of these criteria qualify a student for the class, this doesn’t necessarily mean the student should take the class. Parents can still decide on private lessons if they deem it better for their particular situation (especially if the student has already taken a class before).

Lastly, parents may consider their finances. Private lessons are usually more costly. Classes are great for a self-motivated student whose scores are in the middle 70th percentile and not too far apart. Suggestion for a topic?
