A LOOK BACK AT 2024 – A YEAR OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
By Cathy Zavorskas, Director of Community Engagement, Borough of Matawan

As 2024 draws to a close, it provides the opportunity to look back and reflect upon the year. For the Matawan Borough Recreation Commission, it was a busy, yet satisfying year as we gathered to discuss, plan, and implement the summer recreation camp and fifteen or so events throughout 2024. From the first event, the Easter Egg Hunt to our last event, Winter Festival of Lights, our goal has been to build upon these annual offerings and improve upon the way in which we advertise and engage with the community. To that end, we printed more banners with multiple events per set and included other Matawan Borough Commission events whenever possible. We also expanded the number of posts

LAST FEW WEEKS TO DONATE TO TOYS FOR TOTS
In addition to All Around Publications Toys for Tots, KP Edgestone is kicking of their 6th Annual Toy Drive in both their Matawan and Jamesburg offices. The brokerage is continuing their long-running tradition to be part of this festive event as they encourage people to give back to their community by donating a new, unwrapped toy to the drive. Matt Lewellen, Branch Manager of the KP Edgestone Matawan office loves helping with the drive every year. “It’s always a pleasure getting our collection box set up and putting up the holiday decorations around the office to bring in the holiday spirit. We appreciate our agents, friends and neighbors who help out every year by bringing in toys!” This year KP Edgestone Realty has teamed up with All Around Matawan-Aberdeen to get

the word out. The more people know about the drive, the more successful it will be.
The Toys for Tots program is run by the United States Marine Corps Reserve and has been helping bring smiles to the faces of children since 1947. The mission of the program is to provide disadvantaged children with a sense of hope and recognition, building self-esteem and helping the children to become responsible citizens and caring members of their community.
The program relies on the generosity of donors and the support of local communities. When you’re out buying gifts for your loved ones, pick one up for the donation box. Donations accepted at 76 Main Street in Matawan from November 22nd through December 17th.

MATAWAN MAYOR ALTOMONTE MESSAGE

Matawan Mayor Joseph Altomonte
I am thrilled to announce that the Borough of Matawan has been awarded a $299,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) under the FY 2025 Municipal Aid Program. This funding will enable us to make significant roadway improvements on MacArthur Drive and Eisenhower Court, ensuring safer and more accessible streets for our residents.
Securing grants like this is a top priority for my administration. It is essential for municipalities to aggressively pursue every available opportunity to fund critical infrastructure projects. Grants such as this one allow us to address vital needs without placing additional financial burdens on our taxpayers. Our success reflects the hard work and dedication of our team, who remain committed to advancing Matawan’s future. This project will address pavement
deterioration, improve drainage systems, and enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians. MacArthur Drive and Eisenhower Court are key residential streets, and these upgrades will make a meaningful difference for our community.
Roadway improvements are more than just a matter of convenience—they are investments in safety, sustainability, and the quality of life for our residents. I look forward to seeing the impact this grant will have on our Borough, and I remain committed to seeking further funding opportunities that support Matawan’s growth and success. As plans are finalized, we will keep residents informed every step of the way. Together, we are building a stronger, safer Matawan for generations to come.

A MESSAGE FROM THE MATAWAN ABERDEEN BOARD OF EDUCATION
At holiday time, we are all flooded with requests for donations. Yet one place where your contributions can make a direct impact in our own community is through our school district’s charity: MARSD Cares. Its objective is to give assistance to those facing hardships, including students, their families, and our staff. In the past, MARSD Cares has helped victims of fires, sudden deaths, and serious illnesses. Funds are raised directly through donations and fundraisers
You can make a significant difference by donating to its newest event, the Winter Wonderland Holiday Feast for 80+ MARSD families who are most in need.
This magical celebration on December 17th will include delicious food, exciting events, and gifts for the children. To be successful, donations of money, gifts, and services from our community and local businesses are needed. Volunteers are also appreciated. To contribute or help, contact Darlene Gallagher, Confidential Executive Secretary, at dgallagher@marsd.org.
Also on the Board’s mind at this time of year is helping the school district prepare for a mandatory oversight initiative called QSAC (Quality Single Accountability Con-
tinuum). The NJ Department of Education mandates QSAC accountability in each district every three years to ensure that it is operating effectively and in compliance with all applicable state laws and requirements. There are five key components: Instruction & Program, Fiscal, Governance, Operations, and Personnel. Each review consists of a self-evaluation backed by documentation, a “desk audit” review of files, and an extensive site visit. The Board will be reviewing and approving the self-evaluation before submission, and afterwards, planning and approving budgets to support any items where the district may not have met state required standards. As always, we are thankful to be serving you and wish you happiness throughout the holiday season!

DEANA GUNN, MATAWAN COUNCIL PRESIDENT

As another year closes out, this has been incredible for Matawan, thanks to the hard work and dedication of so many individuals who care deeply about our community. Successful events like the Shark 5K— bringing residents and visitors together, and the unforgettable Matawan Day at its new location, filled with vibrant festivities, are a testament to our collective spirit. And the excitement isn’t over yet, with a few more events on the horizon! As we move Matawan to the future, we have enhanced our senior services and continue to be proud of our history with an active Historical Society and Sites Commission, remembering our past while we move forward. Behind the scenes, so much effort goes into ensuring Matawan functions smoothly, and these accomplishments are only possible with the combined dedication of the Matawan Police Department, Department of Public Works, Fire Department,
Borough Administrator, and all our employees. Your commitment to keeping our community safe, thriving, and vibrant does not go unnoticed—thank you for all you do. We also celebrated new developments, like the beautiful dock at Lake Lefferts, now a beloved spot for relaxation and recreation. We upgraded Penniple and Clinton Street Parks. To our commission volunteers and the Matawan Borough Council, who work so hard, your time, energy, and passion truly make Matawan a place we can all be proud to call home. Hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday season!

FINDING HOPE AND LOVE IN TIMES OF GRIEF AND LOSS DURING THE HOLIDAYS

L. Hernandez, Jr Funeral Director/
The holidays, typically filled with joy, laughter, and familial gatherings, can amplify feelings of absence and sorrow. Each ornament hung on the tree, every carol sung, and each tradition observed can evoke memories of the person
who is no longer present. It is in these moments that the reality of the forever bond becomes starkly apparent; the love we shared does not dissipate with their absence, but rather transforms into a bittersweet reminder of what once was.
In navigating this complex landscape of grief, it is essential to recognize that coping does not equate to moving on or getting over the loss. Instead, coping involves finding ways to honor the memory of our loved ones while allowing ourselves to feel the pain of their absence. This might include lighting a candle in their memory, sharing stories that evoke their spirit, or participating in charitable acts that reflect their values.
Ultimately, the process of coping through the holidays is about finding a way to coexist with our grief, embracing the love that remains while acknowledging the sorrow. It is a testament to the bond that endures, reminding us that while loss is profound, love is lasting and can provide comfort even in the most challenging times.

PREPARING KIDS FOR COLLEGE
By Paul Pscolka
Sending a child off to college is a proud yet daunting time for families. Preparing early can help both parents and students navigate this transition with confidence.
Fostering Independence
Encourage independence long before move-in day. Teaching children to handle challenges on their own during high school can ease their adjustment to college life and bring parents peace of mind.
Balancing Support and Space
At university, students need to feel supported yet independent. Regular but non-intrusive communication reassures them that they are loved while giving them space to grow.
Teaching Self-Advocacy
Students who know how to advocate for themselves—whether by seeking help from professors or addressing personal issues—tend to thrive. Parents who instill this skill worry less.
Building Responsibility
Time management and academic discipline are key to success in college. Reinforcing responsibility during the teenage years helps prepare students to juggle deadlines, classes, and social life effectively.
Discussing Finances
Open conversations about budgeting and
spending ensure both students and parents avoid financial strain. Setting boundaries on expenses prevents surprises down the road.
Encouraging Exploration
College is a time for discovery. Students flourish when they explore new interests, whether through courses or extracurricular activities. Parents should encourage curiosity, knowing growth often comes from stepping outside one’s comfort zone.
Celebrating Achievements
Only 7% of the world’s population holds a bachelor’s degree, making this milestone worth celebrating. Parents can take pride in their child’s journey and accomplishments.
The Bottom Line
Sending a child to college is transformative for any family. By fostering independence, teaching responsibility, and celebrating milestones, parents can guide their children to thrive in this new chapter while embracing the journey themselves. A LOOK BACK AT 2024 – A YEAR OF COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
By Cathy Zavorskas, Director of Community Engagement, Borough of Matawan
Continued from page 1
on FB and Instagram which resulted in a considerable increase of followers at both sites who shared and disseminated the information to friends and family. Articles and advertisements in this paper and on the Patch also contributed, as did the use of the town marquees, and the Borough website.
As a result, the Recreation Commission saw an increase in overall attendance at the events throughout the year. We were pleased to see such consistency and more than that, a wonderful sense of community spirit and enthusiasm by all who came. We were delighted to receive much positive feedback and even ideas for improvements in the future. We appreciated all the comments and know that they will help us create even better events the next time around.
Once the new year begins, the Recreation Commission will be hard at work reviewing, discussing and planning the all events and activities for 2025. Up for consideration are modifying the summer rec camp program, the expansion of senior programs and the space to have weekly, bi-monthly, and monthly senior activities and events,
the continuation of our senior exercise programs, and trips to shows and other places of interest. We hope as well to consider plans for teens and make some improvements to the parks and downtown area with the money raised from the Turkey Trot 5k.
We hope to build upon the strides that were made by all the commissions in offering quality programs and with improving the overall level of community engagement this year. As 2024 winds down, the Matawan Borough Recreation Commission wishes each of you a wonderful holiday season, and a happy and healthy new year! See you in 2025!
