I love using flowers that are naturally in season because they’re at their freshest and often provide the best value. Of course, weddings don’t always go exactly as planned. Weather changes, timelines shift, and surprises happen. That’s just part of the job. I’ve learned to stay flexible, keep a smile on my face, and always have a backup plan. My goal is to handle the unexpected so you can focus on what matters most - celebrating your love. The Harris Family Every Child Has a Story

OR LESLIE AND Mike Harris, home is found in the people gathered around the table, the children who know they are welcome, neighbors who look out for one another, and classrooms where a caring adult can change a life. The Harris’s moved from Illinois to Arizona in 2013 after an opportunity with State Farm brought their family west. Leslie’s mother lived in North Scottsdale, her brother lived in Anthem, and the Dove Valley area created a point between them. At the time, the neighborhood felt removed from the busier parts of the Valley. They were drawn to the mountain views, desert scenery, trails, and easy access to Interstate 17. Their Carefree Crossing home also had space for their large family. The move was never going to be quiet. Their two oldest daughters were attending Illinois State University and made it clear they were not interested in being left behind. Their belongings ended up in the family garage, and nearly everyone made the move to Arizona. Only their son Manuel remained in Illinois. “We had a very full house,” Leslie says. They still live in the same home. They have watched businesses, neighborhoods, roads, and development transform what once felt like the edge of town. The 6

reason they stayed remains the same. Their home and community feel right. The neighborhood reminds them of the Midwest. Neighbors notice when someone is away, bring in trash cans, watch homes, and call when a garage door has been left open. Landon, their youngest son, regularly brings in trash cans for neighbors who spend part of the summer in the mountains. “It makes you feel safe,” Leslie says. “We look out for each other.” That spirit of service runs through nearly every part of the Harris family story. Leslie has spent more than 30 years in education and currently teaches third grade at Norterra Canyon School. She always imagined herself in a caring profession and once considered nursing or teaching. Teaching became the clear choice during her first semester at Point Loma College in San Diego. She fell in love with visiting schools, student teaching, meeting families, and becoming part of a classroom community. Today, third grade is what she calls her “jam,” although she began her Arizona teaching career in kindergarten. Her classroom includes students from many cultural backgrounds and learning levels. She holds a gifted education certificate and teaches a gifted cluster, allowing her to challenge advanced learners while supporting students who need a different pace or approach. Leslie believes children do not begin in the same place. They do not learn in the same way or on the same timeline. Her responsibility is to meet them where they are and help each one move forward. Teaching has changed greatly throughout her career. Expectations have increased, classrooms include wider academic and emotional needs, and technology has changed how children communicate. support families, manage behavior, differentiate instruction, and try to understand what each child carries into the classroom.

step into a classroom for a day, while the regular teacher carries the responsibility of planning, communication, discipline, family relationships, and student progress. The classroom has reinforced one belief that guides Mike as an educator and grandfather. “Every child needs to feel loved.”

Still, Leslie is not ready to walk away. When a district leader asked if she was considering retirement, Leslie answered, “I’m not finished making a difference.” That difference often begins with relationships. Years ago, while teaching kindergarten, Leslie worked with a brilliant student with autism who required additional classroom support. When Leslie felt pressure to agree that the student no longer needed that assistance, she refused. She believed the child’s needs had to come first. The student is now 18 and still calls her Mrs. Harris. Another student entered Leslie’s classroom after struggling in a different environment. Before he joined her class, Leslie met with his family and asked about his early life, health, personality, and home experiences. By taking time to understand him, she learned information the school had not previously known. She built trust with him, and he began to thrive. Leslie does not view relationship-building as an extra part of teaching. It is the foundation. Mike understands that work from a unique perspective. After retiring from insurance, he became a certified substitute teacher. His original reason was personal. Leslie’s closest friend in Illinois was terminally ill, and Mike wanted Leslie to be able to leave whenever she was needed without worrying about classroom coverage. He earned his certification nearly eight years ago and continued long after that immediate need had passed. In recent years, he has worked almost exclusively at Norterra Canyon, teaching every grade from preschool through eighth grade. Because he moves throughout the school, Mike knows many students. Six Harris grandchildren currently attend, and their classmates quickly adopted their nickname for him: “Poppy.” Substitute teaching has given Mike a deeper appreciation for Leslie’s career. Their children span more than two decades, giving Leslie and Mike a rare view of how parenting and childhood have changed. They describe family life with humor and the phrase used for their Wi-Fi password: “always chaos.” Parenting such a large and blended family has brought joy, flexibility, advocacy, patience, and resilience. They have navigated autism, mental health challenges, learning differences, and the search for support. Leslie believes raising children was simpler years ago. The world felt smaller, and children were not exposed to technology, social media, and outside pressures as quickly. Mike calls it “external noise,” a constant stream of influences families must manage. Through every season, their home has remained the gathering place. Leslie loves hosting holidays, especially Christmas. Even though many of their children have homes of their own, everyone still expects to return to Mom and Dad’s house.

had been born in Brownsville, Texas, which made him a United States citizen, although his family had not understood what that meant. With his parents’ support, legal guidance, and Mike’s willingness to welcome him, Manuel came to Illinois in 2006 at age 13. He spoke almost no English and was severely underweight. He entered an English language program, repeated eighth grade, learned quickly, played soccer, graduated from high school, and attended community college. Today, he lives in Ohio, works in hospital room refurbishment, has earned an HVAC certification, and remains close to both families. He visits his parents in Mexico and sends them money regularly. “He is just a good-hearted kid,” Leslie says. Their experience with Morgan and Landon unfolded differently. The children’s biological mother had grown up in the Harrises’ Illinois neighborhood. When she later returned with baby Morgan and faced significant challenges, Leslie and her best friend began helping.

The story of their son Manuel began through mission trips to Matamoros, Mexico. Leslie traveled with groups of students to help build simple homes in a colonia where families lived in extreme poverty. During repeated trips, two young brothers began following Leslie and the volunteers from job site to job site. One was Manuel. As he approached eighth grade, Leslie understood that continuing his education would be difficult because high school required money his family did not have. She suggested that he come to Illinois and attend school with her family. The next day, Manuel’s mother handed Leslie a worn birth certificate. Manuel 7

The Harrises’ older daughters also welcomed Morgan, bringing her to activities and college visits. When Landon was born, he soon became part of the family’s daily life as well. What began as helping gradually became legal guardianship. When the Harrises moved to Arizona, Morgan and Landon came with them, and the family later completed their adoptions. The journey has not been easy. Love did not erase trauma, disability, mental health needs, or the complexity of building stability after difficult beginnings. It did give both children a permanent family committed to continuing the work. For Landon, finding the right educational environment was life-changing. After challenges in traditional school settings, the family discovered the HEART Center, where he participates in vocational and life-skills education. He has found friendships, belonging, horses, Special Olympics, and the Miracle League. “He has a community now that he never felt like he had,” Mike says. That sense of belonging is what Leslie and Mike have tried to offer every child who enters their home, family, or classroom. Their influence is visible in the next generation. Their adult children work in education, nursing, medicine, and other service-centered professions. Two daughters have also opened their homes through foster care and adoption. When Leslie and Mike look at their family, they are most proud of who their children have become. They describe them as kind, passionate, successful, and willing to help others. Their lives have not followed a simple plan. They have included unexpected children, difficult seasons, changed careers, advocacy, classrooms, loss, growth, and a home that is rarely quiet. Mike says their life is not what he imagined when the journey began, but it is exactly what it needed to become. Leslie offers the words that best describe what the years have taught them.

ITCH LOVE’S WORK with Pure Desert Organic Pest Control and Horses Help brings business, service, and animal welfare together in the North Valley. When Mitch Love moved to Arizona in 1993, the decision was largely inspired by the weather. At the time, he was attending school in Vermont and loved to ski. During a January visit to Arizona, he experienced an 80-degree day while temperatures back in Vermont had dropped to 20 degrees below zero. “I thought, if I don’t move to Arizona, I’m the dumbest person I know,” Mitch joked. Arizona quickly became home. About 23 years ago, Mitch and his wife discovered Cave Creek and knew they had found exactly what they were looking for: peace, space, land, and a strong connection to the desert. Today, Mitch is the owner of Pure Desert Organic Pest Control and serves on the board of directors for Horses Help, a Cave Creek organization that has served Arizona since 1987. The idea behind Pure Desert Organic Pest Control began with a painful experience at Mitch’s own home. About 10 years ago, Mitch and his wife discovered they had a rat problem. A pest control company assured them that its treatment would only kill the rats. Two weeks later, they found a dead owl on their front porch. A week after that, they found a dead coyote on the property, along with several dead birds. The experience stayed with him. When Mitch left the banking industry in January 2024, he began looking for a business opportunity. He knew he wanted to offer families a pest control option that was safer around children, pets, horses, wildlife, and the surrounding desert. Animals have always been important to Mitch. He and his wife have rescued border collies for nearly three decades and have always shared their home with rescue dogs. Horses have also been part of his life through friends, customers, and his daughter, who rode for several years. Mitch first learned about Horses Help through a local BNI networking group. His first visit to the property took place during a volunteer day for families from Luke Air Force Base. The organization is home to approximately 20 horses, along with miniature horses, donkeys, and a goat. Horses Help provides adaptive riding and equine-assisted learning for children and adults with physical, cognitive, and behavioral challenges. Its programs also support veterans, first responders, and at-risk youth. During Mitch’s first volunteer experience, one child with autism was terrified to approach a horse. The child did not want to get close or climb into the saddle. The Horses Help team remained patient, allowing the child time to build trust and become comfortable. Eventually, the child agreed to get on the horse. By the end of the experience, the same child who had been afraid did not want to get off. That moment showed Mitch how powerful the

connection between horses and people can be. “Horses are super empathetic and intuitive,” he said. Because horses are prey animals, they are highly aware of their surroundings. They pay attention to movement, emotions, body language, and energy. Being around them can help people slow down, remain present, build confidence, and develop trust. After supporting Horses Help for about two years, Mitch decided he wanted to become more involved. He had previously served on the boards of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation and a professional banking association, so joining the Horses Help board felt like a natural next step. Mitch hopes his community connections will help introduce more people to the organization and its mission. The connection between Horses Help and Pure Desert Organic Pest Control extends beyond his board position. Horses Help hired Mitch’s company to provide natural pest control services for the property, which is especially important around horses and other animals. Mitch encourages animal owners to ask detailed questions before allowing any pest control company to treat their property. Words such as “green,” “eco-friendly,” or “safe” do not always tell the whole story. He believes one of the biggest misconceptions about organic pest control is that it is less effective or significantly more expensive than traditional treatments. According to Mitch, neither assumption is true. Horses Help depends heavily on donations and volunteers. Contributions help cover feed, veterinary care, equipment, staffing, stable maintenance, and the daily needs of the animals.

Volunteers do not need previous horse experience. The organization provides training and offers opportunities ranging from feeding and property support to helping at community events and fundraisers. Mitch hopes more North Valley residents will visit Horses Help, learn about its programs, and experience the organization for themselves. “It’s an amazing organization,” he said. “They do a fantastic job helping people open up, learn more about themselves, and learn how to deal with life.”

ummer has come to a close and kids are back in school. Parents are packing lunches and helping their little learners settle into new routines. But there’s one important part of school readiness that often gets overlooked: communication. The first few weeks of school often highlight skills that went unnoticed over the summer. Children are expected to follow directions, answer questions, make friends, express their needs, and participate in class. While every child develops at their own pace, some may struggle, and those challenges can affect much more than just academics. As a speech language pathologist, one of the most common things I hear from parents is, “I thought they would grow out of it.” Sometimes they do. But sometimes, what seems like a small concern today, can become a bigger challenge as the demands of school increase.

Simple Ways to Support Communication at Home: Everyday interactions can have a lasting impact on language development: • Read together every day, even for just 10–15 minutes. • Talk about your daily activities as they happen. Narrate cooking dinner, grocery shopping, or getting ready for school.

• Expand on what they say. If they say, “Big truck,” you might respond, “Yes! That’s a big red truck.” • Eat together. Conversations around the dinner table naturally build vocabulary, listening, and social communication.

PAINTING HER PLACE IN THE COMMUNITY By Ewa Rusenovich Kyra’s love of art started long before she ever painted a mural in Anthem. Growing up in Russia, she was surrounded by art, music and nature. She remembers being taught to really look at things, from the way paint mixed to the details found in animals and the outdoors. One of her favorite childhood memories is from school, where there was an indoor area filled with turtles, tortoises, reptiles and a large fountain. “I think the appreciation of nature started there,” she says. That love of animals eventually became a big part of her artwork. Sharks were one of the first things she became fascinated with, although at first they scared her. She remembers looking through nature magazines and being afraid to even look at some of the photos. Over time, that fear became curiosity. “I thought, I want to try to draw these. These are beautiful animals.” She kept drawing. Sketchbooks, notebooks and even math assignments became places for her to practice. Penguins were a favorite. At the

Her parents were always encouraging. Her mother sang and played piano, while her father, an engineer, also enjoyed drawing and music. After Kyra came to the United States, classmates and family members began pointing out how talented she was, and little by little she started to believe it too. When she attended Michigan State University, however, she did not initially go for art. She studied Russian as a heritage speaker and considered continuing on to teach the language. Art was still there in the background, and eventually she decided to give it more of her attention. Years later, her work can now be found throughout the North Valley. Kyra has created murals for local businesses including Back Nine Golf and Homeland Brew Co. Many of those opportunities came simply through relationships she had built in the community. For Kyra, every mural starts with understanding what the client wants. Businesses will send her photos, ideas or examples, and she begins putting together a concept. “My goal is to capture their vision,” she says. The process changes depending on the space. Sometimes she creates the design on a tablet and projects it onto the wall. Other times she uses a grid, especially when working on brick. Outdoor murals require different preparation than indoor projects, and there has been plenty of learning along the way. One of her first big projects was a glass mosaic for QI Montessori in Cave Creek. She remembers taking on the project and then realizing she had to figure out how to make it happen. She researched, asked questions, talked to people at home improvement stores and learned as she went. The project also gave students the chance to be involved, something that

has become an important part of Kyra’s work. Today, she teaches art part time at Ridgeline Academy and has worked with students on murals displayed around the school. She says teaching has helped her see art differently too. Kids notice things adults often miss. During class discussions, students have pointed out details in famous paintings that made her stop and look at the work in a completely new way. “That’s what I love about kids,” she says. “They see things, and they have these ideas.” She also wants her students to understand that art does not have to stay inside a classroom. She encourages them to draw, paint, create and even look for opportunities to sell their work. Some of her students have already started taking commissions, including pet portraits. Outside of teaching, Kyra continues to work on her own commissions. Pet portraits are especially popular, which brings her back to the animals that inspired her in the first place. She also creates larger custom pieces and has completed work for clients around the Valley. Her family has become part of the process too. Her fiancée has helped on mural projects, including the Back Nine mural, and her children have had opportunities to be involved as well. For Kyra, that is part of what makes the work special. When asked what she hopes people feel when they see one of her murals around Anthem, she did not hesitate. “Inspired.” She wants someone to see her work and feel like maybe they can create something too. Her advice to anyone who has been thinking about pursuing art is just as simple. “Go for it. Look for the opportunities.” For Kyra, those opportunities have taken her from drawing animals as a child in Russia to creating artwork throughout the community she now calls home. And now, through teaching, murals and commissions, she gets to help other young artists see what might be possible for them too.

However, when you think about taking in the opera, watching a professional Broadway show, or listening to classically trained artists you may have to expand your radius just a bit further. Places like The Orpheum Theatre, The Phoenix Theatre Company, and the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) are fabulous venues in Arizona to experience the performing arts, but they do require a car ride into Downtown Phoenix.

What if I told you that your access to the theatre just got a whole lot easier? Banzerini House is a nonprofit production company located inside the Pioneer Living History Museum. It combines a performing arts academy with a professional black-box theatre environment for community productions. She has trained in musicals and television and spent a number of years working with Burt Reynolds in his theatre in Jupiter, Florida. She also ran the theatre program at Boulder Creek High School. Her recent production was Beetlejuice. Fitz-Tobison Productions will be presenting the one-man show, Encore! It’s an inspiring solo performance featuring renowned Metropolitan Opera singer, William Powers. Known for his unforgettable portrayals of some of opera’s most notorious villains, Powers combines his commanding baritone with vibrant storytelling to take audiences on a journey through memorable musical theatre pieces and celebrated opera selections.
