Daisy Mountain Fire Department Honor Guard

Led by Honor Guard Commander Gabe Alvarez, an engineer on Engine 145 with nearly 19 years of service, the team carries out its mission with consistency and purpose. For almost a decade in this leadership role, Alvarez has helped shape a group known for its professionalism and deep commitment to honoring those who have served.

The Honor Guard regularly travels throughout Arizona and beyond to stand in tribute at memorial services and ceremonies.

Each appearance is rooted in respect and attention to detail, offering support to families and fellow first responders during some of their most difficult moments.

Recently, members traveled to Colorado Springs to honor one of their own who passed away from occupational cancer. He is now memorialized at the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial. Being present

for moments like this is something the team does not take lightly. It is a responsibility they carry with pride.

Locally, the Honor Guard is a steady presence in the community. They participate in the Veterans Day Parade in Anthem, present the colors at recruit graduations, and take part in community events such as rodeos and civic gatherings. Their presence brings a level of respect and tradition that resonates with both residents and fellow public servants.

Much of this work is self-funded.

Members often cover the cost of uniforms, equipment, and travel themselves to ensure they can continue showing up when it matters most. Their commitment is not about recognition. It is about honoring others and representing their department the right way.

The mission is Remember. Represent.

FATHERHOOD ROOTED F

in Love and Presence

ATHERHOOD, FOR TOM Lavin, has never been a static role. It has evolved through seasons shaped by family, loss, work, and a deep commitment to simply being present. When asked what Father’s Day looks like now, he does not start with himself. He looks back.

“In this season of life, I reflect on my own father and my grandfathers,” he says.

“They were family dedicated individuals. My dad worked two jobs. He was a civil servant, but he also took on part time work to make sure we had what we needed.

Food on the table, sports, activities, even vacations. That stuck with me.” That example became a blueprint. Faith, family, and responsibility were not abstract ideas. They were lived out daily. “Being a family man, staying close to my faith, making sure your family has what they need. That resonated with me as I got older,” he says.

It is part of what led Tom and his late wife Tara to build a life in Arizona. After leaving New Jersey, they eventually settled in Anthem and he later in Dove Valley, where he raised their children, Bella and Joey.

Now, with Bella 20 and Joey 18, fatherhood looks different again. “It’s evolved in chapters,” Tom says. “There have been life changing events that forced it to evolve.”

Through it all, one thing has remained constant. “Staying close to my kids has 6

always been the most important part.” That closeness is built on transparency.

“There’s a level of openness that you don’t think you’ll have with your kids,” he says. “But they need it just as much as you do.”

His goal has never been perfection. It has been preparation. “I think every parent wants to feel like they’ve done a good job if their kids can be independent,” he says.

“My role has always been to get them to a place where they feel like they can take on the world on their own and actually do it.” When he talks about his children, the pride is immediate. “I’m most proud of the young woman Bella has become,” he says. “At a very young age, she learned how to not only be my daughter but also be a support person in our household.” Now attending Northern Arizona University, where she studies psychology with a minor in health and wellness, Bella continues to impress him. “She’s structured. She plans. She commits. She executes,” Tom says. “She’s the first in our house to go off to college. I couldn’t imagine anyone else doing it the way she has.”

Joey brings a completely different personality into the family dynamic. “He’s free minded. Big personality,” Tom says. “He wants to be everybody’s friend. You can sit down and talk to him about anything, especially sports.” But beneath that outgoing nature is a softer side. “He has a soft side and a big heart,” Tom says.

“And I hope he’s learned that at home.” Tom describes his role now less as a parent making decisions and more as a guide helping his children navigate adulthood.

“You’re not making decisions for them anymore,” he says. “You’re helping them make decisions on their own. You’re a sounding board.”

by opportunity and connection. As life continues to move forward, his definition of strength has evolved too. “Strength isn’t just about taking things on,” he says.

“It’s about how you follow through. It’s about consistency. Being reliable. Finishing what you start.”

Tara remains central to the story of their family. “She was an amazing woman,” Tom says. “She believed in the vision of moving to Arizona and building a life for our kids.” Even while undergoing treatment, he says she remained focused on everyone around her. “She battled harder than anyone I’ve ever seen, but she never wanted to burden anyone else with what she was going through.” Her absence is still deeply felt.

He hopes those lessons are what his children carry forward most. “If one day they say thank you, that will define it for me,” he says. Looking ahead, Tom does not see distance as Bella and Joey step into adulthood. He sees a different kind of closeness.

“I want to be side by side with them,” he says. “Experiencing life together in a new way.” “People talk about being empty nesters,” he says. “But I want to find a way to be even closer.”

“I wish my kids had her physical presence today,” Tom says. “But I think she would be extremely proud of who they’ve become.”

In the end, what matters most to him is simple. “When my kids look back, I hope they remember that I was always there,” he says. “No matter what. That they could count on me.” It is not about perfection. It is about presence. “I think they’ll say he did the best he could and loved us unconditionally,” Tom says. “And that he was there, always.”

In the aftermath of that loss, both Bella and Joey showed resilience beyond their years. “They had to deal with adult situations early,” he says. “But they handled it in a way where they were still kids, just with adult understanding.” Through it all, Tom made a decision about the kind of father he wanted to be. “I’ve taken a lot of pride in always being there,” he says. “Even if it means sacrificing something for yourself.”

That commitment shaped his professional life as well. After years of owning businesses and working in medical and dental sales, Tom made a career shift following Tara’s passing.

“I wanted to be more present,” he says. “Owning a business comes with a lot of responsibility, and I wanted to focus on my kids.” Today, he serves as general manager at Liberty Plumbing, a local company whose values mirror his own.

“It’s a perfect fit,” he says. “Family, community, doing things the right way.”

Life in Dove Valley has also played an important role in their family story for more than a decade.

“It used to feel like a hidden gem,” he says. “Now it’s growing fast, but we’ve loved it from the beginning.” For Tom, the community offered stability during seasons of change and a place where his children could grow up surrounded

HIS POOL AND spa project embodies restraint and clarity, pairing tactile materials with sculptural surfaces to create a serene outdoor retreat. The centerpiece is a pool with a deep, reflective all-black pebble interior that contrasts with a wall of sand-blasted travertine around the deck, giving the space a soft, sun-worn elegance. A raised spa clad in raked porcelain rises as a quiet sculpture, its surface catching the light and echoing the linear language that runs through the entire design. Floating steps bridge the pool to the spa, introducing a sense of buoyancy and movement while preserving the clean, uninterrupted sightlines that define the composition.

Landscape choices reinforce the desert discipline: fruitless olives and cactus provide architectural silhouettes, texture, and drought-tolerant color without competing with the hardscape. The result is a cohesive, modern composition where every element has a purpose and a place.

The design process began with material study and line work, ensuring surfaces read as continuous bands rather than scattered details. The material palette – travertine, porcelain, and pebble – was selected for durability, performance in a desert climate, and the way they interact with light from morning to night. The all-black interior deepens the pool’s perceived depth, while the pale travertine frames and grounds the space, making it feel expansive rather than crowded.
