monsoon season can put a home’s electrical system to the test. High winds, heavy rain, lightning, and sudden power surges can all create problems that may not be obvious right away.

Trust Point Air & Electric encourages homeowners to take a few simple precautions before and after storms to help keep their homes safe.

Surge protection is one of the most important steps. A lightning strike does not have to hit a home directly to cause damage. Nearby strikes or utility surges can affect appliances, air conditioners, garage door openers, televisions, and smart home systems. Whole-home surge protection can help reduce that risk.

Outdoor outlets should also be inspected. Homeowners should make sure exterior outlets have weatherproof covers and are GFCI protected. If an outlet trips and will not reset, moisture may have entered the box and it should be checked by a licensed electrician.

After a storm, homeowners should watch for flickering lights, buzzing sounds, burning smells, warm outlets, or breakers that continue to trip. These can be signs of damage or an unsafe condition.

A little preparation before monsoon season can go a long way in protecting a home, equipment, and family.

WE LOVED BEING featured on the very first cover of the amazing Anthem Living Magazine. It was so much fun being “famous” for a month! We received so many thoughtful texts and truly felt the love from our wonderful Anthem community.

Life continues to bring us exciting new adventures. We are thrilled to be welcoming our first granddaughter, Annabelle Claire, at the end of August. We have also added a new puppy to the family, JoeyD. The “D,” of course, stands for Don!

We continue to love our life here and cherish all the memories we have made, along with the many more still to come. We cannot wait to bring our granddaughter to the water park and train park, just as we did with all of our children.

It truly feels like life has come full circle.

GIVE OLD AMERICAN FLAGS

a Respectful Retirement

DID YOU KNOW you can recycle worn or damaged American flags for free right here in Anthem? A flag retirement collection box is located inside the Anthem Civic Building at:

Residents can place old flags inside the designated drawer, where they will be collected and retired with the dignity and respect they deserve.

American flags should not be thrown into a regular trash can. When a flag becomes faded, torn, frayed or no longer suitable for display, the proper tradition is to retire it respectfully. This local collection box makes it simple for Anthem

residents to do the right thing while honoring the symbol and everything it represents.

Before dropping off your flag, remove any poles, brackets or other hardware. Fold the flag neatly, place it in a bag if possible, and deposit it inside the collection drawer. It is a small community resource that many residents may not know about, but it provides an important service for our veterans, military families and neighbors who want to show proper respect for the American flag.

The next time you replace a flag at your home or business, bring the old one to the Anthem Civic Building for free and proper retirement.

Every Tenant Should Ask Before Signing a Lease

OVERTHE PAST 13 years, I've experienced leasing from just about every angle. I started by renting a single room inside a local dental office as a massage therapist. From there, I leased space inside a hair salon, eventually expanded into multiple rooms with independent contractors, and today I lease an entire commercial building that I sublease to health, beauty, and wellness professionals.

Each step taught me something new about what makes a great business space— and what questions every tenant should ask before signing a lease.

1. What exactly is included in my rent?

Utilities, Wi-Fi, cleaning, common area maintenance, signage, and amenities can vary greatly. Make sure you understand what's included and what you'll be responsible for separately.

2. What are the lease terms?

How long is the commitment? Are there annual rent increases? Is there flexibility if your business grows or your needs change?

3. What's the culture of the building?

You're not just leasing four walls; you're joining a business community. Ask yourself whether the environment is collaborative, professional, and one where you can see your business thriving.

4. Are there any restrictions?

Be sure you understand policies regarding signage, operating hours, renovations, subleasing, or the types of services allowed.

5. Is there room to grow?

One of the smartest questions you can ask is whether you'll have opportunities to expand without having to relocate if your business takes off.

My biggest piece of advice? Don't choose a space based solely on price. The right location, the right neighbors, and the right landlord can become an investment in your business, not just another monthly expense.

WHENI GOT a lab report showing my prostate specific antigen (PSA) was 7.0, I started ice bathing every day. I thought I was going to die of prostate cancer, and I was determined to avoid surgery. It took me four months to have the courage to retest. It worked. The ice bath brought my PSA down to 1.8 and my testosterone up to 1180 ng/dL, which is pretty good for a sedentary college professor.

shift via the vagus nerve) that calms heart rate and promotes a meditative state. Over repeated sessions (often within two weeks), brown fat is recruited for non-shivering thermogenesis. Insulin sensitivity improves, and the nervous system becomes more adaptable.

If you're starting a new cold plunge practice, go cold enough to gasp and long enough to shiver. After that two-week training period, you won't feel the urge to shiver any more, and you don't have to to get the benefit. I like to keep my ice baths freezing cold, and shorter than five minutes.

People often misunderstand the intensity as reckless or purely painful. In reality, it’s controlled hormesis— beneficial stress that builds resilience when dosed properly. It’s not just for athletes; we see broad use among those managing metabolic issues, mental health challenges, autoimmune conditions, and everyday stress. Resilience, to me, means the capacity to maintain composure and performance under pressure while recovering faster. My own daily practice has transformed how I handle stress: the initial shock trains me to choose calm breathing over panic, carrying over into work deadlines, relationships, and life’s unpredictability. I recover faster, think clearer under load, and approach challenges with greater confidence. A basic cold tub or shower offers milder metabolic benefits but rarely reaches the freezing temperatures needed for full psychological and brown-fat effects. Morozko systems make their own ice to sustain true ~32–34°F conditions as tolerance builds and use ozone disinfection plus microfiltration for crystal-clear water without chlorine—critical for safety, skin health, and enabling frequent use without irritation or bacterial concerns.

Hypertension is the #1 contraindication to cold plunge therapy. Because the ice bath can raise your blood pressure, those with chronic, untreated hypertension should not undertake cold plunge therapy without the supervision of a physician. For the rest of us, start feet-first and always breathe. There's no benefit to overdoing it. Shivering that won’t stop, brain fog, or the need for a long (>20 minutes) rewarming period indicates you've overdosed on cold. Allow full rewarming before driving or intense activity. A good rule of thumb is 3 minutes of light exercise for every minute of freezing cold water exposure.

The best metabolic reason to do regular ice baths is that they support mitochondrial health. All sex hormone synthesis originates in the mitochondria, so a regular practice of cold exposure typically boosts testosterone and estradiol levels. Studies also show a big improvement in insulin sensitivity, even to the point of reversing Type 2 diabetes. Nonetheless, most people who are serious ice bathers report that the mental benefits far outweigh the metabolic. My readers report better mood, reduced anxiety, greater confidence, better sleep, and improved handling of stress. Several have told me that ice baths may have saved their lives.

There's an ancestral connection between the human body and cold. Our ancient ancestors survived Ice Ages, for goodnessakes. We're already designed to flourish in the cold. The problem is that most people love such comfortable, climate-controlled lives that they never feel uncomfortable. As a consequence, they become vulnerable to chronic illness.

WOMEN WHO LEAD AMY WARD

FOR AMY WARD, leadership has never been about a title. It has been about people, trust, growth, and showing up with warmth in every season. Amy’s career in banking began shortly after high school in Michigan, where she started as a part-time teller at a credit union. Over the years, she worked through different roles, learning the business from the ground up and discovering how much she enjoyed helping people reach their financial goals.

After stepping away from full-time work to raise her young children, life brought Amy and her family to Arizona in 2020 through her husband’s career. Like many families new to the area, they were looking for the right place to call home. They were directed to Anthem, a decision Amy now considers one of the best things that could have happened.

Not long after settling in, their realtor encouraged her to visit Copper State Credit Union to open an account. During that visit, Amy’s banking background came up in conversation. Before long, she was offered a part-time position. What began as a way to meet people and connect with the community quickly grew into a new career path.

Amy joined during a season of growth and change as Copper State Credit Union continued strengthening its systems and services. She embraced the transition, supported her team, and

of the Foothills for four consecutive years. In 2025, Amy was also honored with the Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce Customer Service Excellence Award.

One of the things Amy loves most about credit unions is their foundation of “people helping people.” Unlike traditional banks, credit unions are not-for-profit, which means income is reinvested back into members through improved services, better products, and competitive rates. She describes great leadership as listening, following through, supporting a team, and encouraging people to reach their goals. Some of her proudest moments have come from watching employees grow into new opportunities. Outside of work, Amy is proud of her family and is celebrating 20 years of marriage this year. She and her husband stay busy raising their 17-year-old son, 14-yearold daughter, and four rescue pups. She understands the challenge of balancing leadership, motherhood, marriage, and community involvement, and is grateful to be part of an organization that values family and flexibility.

As Copper State Credit Union celebrates 75 years, Amy is stepping into her new role focused on business growth and community support. She hopes to expand services for local businesses and continue creating financial solutions that help people thrive.

To young women hoping to lead, Amy’s advice is simple: stick with it, follow your heart, and keep going.

A FOUNDATION OF WELCOME

FOR WENDY DAVISON, Anthem has never simply been the place where her family lives. It has been the place where they have grown up together, built friendships that feel like family, served their neighbors, raised their children, and found a sense of belonging that reminds her of home. Wendy and her husband, Willy, have lived in Anthem for about 16 years. Before settling in the North Valley, they spent several years in Flagstaff after moving from Montana, where both of them are originally from. When Willy’s career with W.L. Gore & Associates brought the family to the Phoenix area, they began looking for a community that felt grounded, connected, and family-centered.

They found that in Anthem. “We loved the community feel,” Wendy says. “We loved all of the amenities Anthem had, especially for young families.” At the time, their children were young, and Wendy was working as a Higher Education Consultant, while also teaching. Over the years, life unfolded in the way it often does for families who put down roots. She took on roles in K-12 education, eventually serving as a principal in the community, then later starting her own business in school safety and security. Their children grew up in Anthem parks, schools, activities, and friendships. What began as a move for work became the foundation for a full and meaningful life.

For Wendy, part of what made Anthem feel familiar was its resemblance to the communities she knew growing up in Montana. There, neighbors supported neighbors. People showed up for local businesses. Families knew each other. Community was not just a concept, but a way of living. That same spirit is what drew her to Anthem. “We’re both from Montana, and communities in Montana are very similar to Anthem in the fact that you support local, you support your neighbors, you support your community,” she says. Because they do not have extended family nearby, Wendy and Willy have built their own chosen family here. Like many Anthem residents who came from somewhere else, they found their people through schools, sports, work, the Chamber, local events, and the simple rhythm of showing up.

For their children, that foundation has been especially meaningful. Their kids have grown up with friends they have known since

they were babies. Anthem has given them a sense of continuity, familiarity, and connection. “I would definitely say the people made it feel like home,” Wendy says. Wendy appreciates the size of Anthem because it offers the best of both worlds. Phoenix, Scottsdale, arts, entertainment, and cultural opportunities are all within reach, yet Anthem still feels like a small town. It is the kind of place where a quick trip to the grocery store usually includes running into someone you know, and where a family dinner out may turn into a chance to catch up with neighbors.

That sense of connection has shaped their family life in countless ways. Her son’s birthday is on the Fourth of July, so Anthem’s Independence Day celebrations have always been a family tradition. Music in May has been part of their lives since the children were tiny. The parks have been woven into their story, from basketball at Opportunity Way to sports, activities, and afternoons spent outdoors.

Supporting local is also a Davison family value. Whether it is local restaurants, community events, or small businesses, Wendy believes in investing back into the place you call home. That mindset carries into how she and Willy have raised their children, Vinny and Marlee.

Vinny, who is turning 16 and heading into his sophomore year, is involved, hardworking, and joyful. He participates in National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, and cross country. He is a strong student, but what stands out most to his mom is his heart. “The biggest thing about Vinny is that he loves his friends,” Wendy says. “He is such a happy kid.” He is also learning to drive, which means Wendy’s minivan is entering a new season of adventure. Like many parents of teenagers, she is proud, slightly nervous, and asking the community for prayers.

Marlee, 12, is heading into eighth grade and is equally active in her own way. She is involved in National Junior Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, and

Student Council. She also plays football, volleyball, basketball, and runs cross country. Where Vinny wears his heart on his sleeve, Marlee is more introspective. She watches, listens, processes, and notices. Wendy describes both children as confident and happy, but very different in how they move through the world. As a family, the Davison's made an intentional decision years ago: they wanted to give their children experiences more than things. Travel has become a major part of their family culture. “We made the decision a long time ago that we were not going to get our kids things,” Wendy says. “We were going to give them experiences.” Those experiences have taken them everywhere from Disney trips and amusement parks to Branson, Missouri, the Florida Keys, North Carolina, nature preserves, hiking trails, and family adventures built around learning something new. Wendy laughs that the nature hikes are sometimes more her and Willy’s idea than the kids’, but they have learned to go along with it.

The family loves roller coasters, the outdoors, exploring new places, and being together. For Wendy, travel has also shaped the way she sees education, community, and service. Her work has taken her beyond Arizona and even into the United Kingdom, giving her a broader view of how different communities approach children, learning, and safety.

“Education is different everywhere,” she says. “But the core message is we want to take care of our kids, and we want them to be productive members of society.” That belief sits at the center of Wendy’s professional work. School safety has long been one of her deepest areas of focus. But for Wendy, true school safety goes far beyond cameras, fences, locks, and emergency plans. While those physical measures can be important, she believes too many conversations stop there. She refers to that narrow focus as “security theater,” meaning visible safety measures that may make people feel protected, but do not always address the deeper issues that lead to crisis. Her work is centered on prevention. That includes trusted adults on campus, mental health supports, centralized reporting systems, strong relationships, and school environments where students feel safe, seen, and connected. She believes schools need to identify concerns before they become crises, and that students are often the most important source of information when they feel comfortable speaking to an adult. “You’ve got to look upstream,” she says. “You’ve got to think about what is going to solve the problem, not just the symptom.”

Through her own business and her role as Associate Director of the National Center for the Prevention of Community Violence (NCPCV), Wendy works with schools, cities, police departments, and communities to build broader strategies around youth safety and violence prevention. Her message to parents is clear: school safety is not only about what you can see. Instead of only asking whether a campus has cameras or metal detectors, she hopes more parents will ask deeper questions. How many counselors are on campus? Do students have trusted adults? Are there mental health supports? Is there a way for students to report concerns? Do children feel like they belong? For Wendy, the most effective prevention starts with relationships.

That same emphasis on relationships is what led her to become involved with the Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce. As a business owner, she wanted a network of fellow entrepreneurs and thought partners. What she found was a community of people who believed in supporting one another. Her involvement grew into leadership, and she is proud of the way the Chamber has expanded while maintaining its small, family-like

atmosphere. “This Chamber is different,” she says. “You see people truly supporting each other.”

As Anthem continues to grow, especially with development and industry expanding in the North Valley, Wendy hopes local business owners see opportunity rather than fear. She believes there is room for everyone, and that growth means more people will get to experience the community so many residents already love. “There is a piece of the pie for everyone,” she says. “We can all eat.”

Right now, Wendy is especially excited about expanding NCPCV’s Ollie the Owl Youth Safety Initiative, including a grant-supported effort focused on youth gun safety for kindergarten through fifth-grade students. The program trains educators to teach simple, age-appropriate safety lessons, including leaving a firearm alone, leaving the area, and telling a trusted adult. The initiative also includes parent education around safe gun storage. In addition, Wendy continues to support small schools through her own business, helping provide resources to those that may not otherwise have access.

Whether she is working in school safety, serving through the Chamber, raising her family, supporting local businesses, or welcoming someone new into the community, Wendy returns to the same values: integrity, communication, transparency, and relationships. At the heart of it all, she hopes people feel welcome when they interact with her. Because to Wendy, community is not built through grand gestures. It is built through showing up. It is built by asking questions, offering help, supporting local, listening well, and making room for others at the table.

And in Anthem, that kind of welcome has become the foundation of home.

SUMMER IS THE time for lying by the pool, soaking up the sun, icecold popsicles, and the smell of barbecue lingering in the air. But what happens at the end of summer when you look in the mirror and see green hair that looks and feels like straw?

Living in Arizona means our hair is exposed to some of the strongest UV rays in the country. Excessive UV exposure can cause hair to weaken and result in the texture feeling dry and dull. The outermost layer of your hair strands is called the cuticle. This layer forms a protective shield over your hair. A healthy hair cuticle should be flat and smooth to help lock in moisture while keeping it smooth and shiny. The harsh UV rays can break down that outer barrier, leading to frizzy, unmanageable hair.

Sebum is the natural oil that our scalp produces that coats the hair cuticle. Chlorine can strip our hair of those protective oils. Not only that, but it can also affect the color of our hair. It can cause artificial pigment in the hair to be oxidized, causing the color to fade or turn brassy.

For the blonde girls, copper in the water can build up on the hair shaft and turn it that dreaded green color. So how do we prevent this? The first step is to wet your hair with clean water before getting in the pool. Think of your hair like a sponge; if you get into the pool with it already wet, it will prevent it from soaking up the chlorinated water. You can also layer your hair with a conditioner or leave-in conditioner. The Redken One United is a favorite in my studio, with 25 different benefits that leave the hair soft and shiny.

Building a Small-Town Football Powerhouse

COACH Boulder Creek Football

WHENJOSH BAHR and his family moved to Anthem seven years ago, he knew almost immediately that this was the place. Coming from Iowa, his family was drawn to the smalltown feel tucked inside the North Valley. Kids at the park, families out in the community, and the energy around Boulder Creek all felt like home.

Now in his third year as head coach of Boulder Creek football, Josh is building more than a program. He is building pride. With 25 years of coaching experience and 12 years as a head coach, Josh understands what it takes to create something that lasts. For him, football has never been just about Friday night lights. It is about students, families, coaches, boosters, youth programs, and a community willing to show up together. “It takes a community to run a football program,” he says.

That belief is a big reason he helped strengthen the Junior Jag program. Josh saw early on that Anthem had all the right pieces, from flag football to youth football to the high school level. The goal was to bring those pieces together so players could grow through one connected system. His mission is clear. Use football as a tool to help develop young men into better husbands, fathers, employees, leaders, teammates, and community members. The lessons go far beyond the field. Players hear about academics, communication, commitment, taking care of their school, and doing their best every day. For Josh, the proud moments are not always the big wins. Sometimes they are found in the daily work, the start of a season, a banquet, a conversation, or seeing how far the program has come in just a few years.

This August marks an exciting kickoff for Boulder Creek football. Josh hopes the community will fill the stands, cheer loudly, and recognize the level of football being played right here at home. Boulder Creek competes in 6A football, one of the most competitive classes in the country, and these athletes are representing Anthem, Desert Hills, Tramonto, Black Canyon City, and the surrounding North Valley with pride.

The vision is simple, keep building. Josh believes this third year is a big one. The foundation is there. The structure is there. The pride is there. Now it is time for the community to show up.

Most women assume recurrent UTIs are simply part of getting older. They drink more water, buy cranberry supplements, keep antibiotics on standby, and hope the next infection stays away longer than the last. But what if the infection isn’t the real problem?

One of the biggest changes happening during perimenopause and menopause has nothing to do with your bladder. It has everything to do with estrogen.

MORE THAN A BLADDER ISSUE

Understanding UTIs and Estrogen

Estrogen keeps the tissues of the vagina, urethra, and bladder healthy, thick, flexible, and well supplied with blood flow. It also helps maintain the healthy bacteria that naturally protect against infection. As estrogen declines, those tissues become thinner, drier, and more fragile. The protective environment changes, making bacteria much more likely to take hold. That means many women aren’t getting “more infections.” They’re losing the natural defense system they had for decades.

I hear it almost every week. “I’ve never had a UTI in my life until now.” “My urine culture was negative, but it still burns.” “I’ve been on antibiotics three times this year.” Those stories are incredibly common, yet many women are never told to consider estrogen as part of the solution.

Vaginal estrogen is one of the most well studied treatments we have for preventing recurrent urinary tract infections in women after estrogen begins to decline. Unlike systemic hormone therapy, low dose vaginal estrogen works primarily where it is applied. It restores the health of the vaginal and urinary tissues, improves the protective environment, and helps reduce the risk of future infections.

For many women, it also improves vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, urinary urgency, bladder irritation, and the constant feeling that they need to find the nearest bathroom. That doesn’t mean every urinary symptom is caused by low estrogen. Blood in the urine, fever, severe pain, or persistent symptoms should always be evaluated by your healthcare provider. But if you’ve been caught in the cycle of recurring UTIs, repeated antibiotics, and temporary relief, it’s worth asking whether the real issue has been overlooked. Your body isn’t failing you. It’s responding to a hormone your bladder has depended on all along.

What many don't expect is to find a place that feels like family. That is what makes the Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce so special. From the moment a new member walks through the door, they are welcomed, not just with a handshake, but with genuine encouragement, introductions, and a community of people who truly want to see one another succeed. Around here, competition takes a back seat to collaboration. Members celebrate each other's victories, refer business to one another, and show up when someone needs support.

That culture has been on full display throughout 2026. We've had the privilege of welcoming an incredible number of new businesses into our Chamber family this year. Every ribbon cutting and grand opening has been more than a ceremonial photo opportunity; it's been a celebration of someone's dream becoming reality. Whether it's a longawaited grand opening, a business expansion, or a new entrepreneur taking that exciting first step, our members show up because they genuinely care.

Those relationships continue to grow through the many opportunities we have to connect throughout the year. Our signature events have become favorites because they bring together business owners, community leaders, and residents in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. This spring's Magic & Moonshine was another tremendous success, filled with laughter, conversation, and new connections. We're already looking forward to our upcoming Hula & Hog Roast, where members and guests will once again gather to enjoy great food, great company, and a little island-inspired fun while strengthening the relationships that make our Chamber unique.

Of course, networking is only one part of who we are. One of the things that makes us most proud is our commitment to serving our community. Throughout the year, Chamber members roll up their sleeves to support local nonprofit organizations that are making a real difference in the lives of Anthem families.

Recently, our members partnered with ACTS (Anthem Cares Through Service) to assemble "Kick Off Summer" activity bags for local elementary students, filling them with books, games, puzzles, and handwritten notes of encouragement. It was a simple project with a meaningful impact, reminding children that their community is invested in their success.

We've also had the opportunity to support Youth for Troops, an organization dedicated to serving our nation's military members through care packages, volunteerism, and patriotic community engagement. These service projects remind us that the Chamber isn't just about growing businesses, it's about strengthening the entire community we call home.

That spirit of service is what transforms business relationships into lasting friendships. When members attend a Morning Meeting, Business After Hours, Restaurant Night, ribbon cutting, or volunteer event, they're not simply collecting business cards, they're building trust. They're learning each other's stories. They're finding ways to help one another long before asking for anything in return. Those authentic relationships naturally lead to referrals, partnerships, collaborations, and opportunities that simply can't be manufactured. They happen because people know one another, trust one another, and genuinely want each other to thrive.

BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE TOGETHER

ATTSMC ARIZONA, we are incredibly proud to call North Phoenix home. The chips we make here power the latest technologies—from smartphones to life-saving medical devices. As we work alongside our neighbors to bring advanced semiconductor manufacturing to Phoenix, we know that true growth must go hand-in-hand with environmental stewardship.

When we selected North Phoenix for our U.S. operations in 2020, the city and state’s thoughtful 100-year water planning was a deciding factor. We wanted to match that visionary planning with our own strict conservation standards. Although semiconductor manufacturing uses far less water than other sectors, like agriculture, cleaning high-purity silicon wafers still requires a significant amount of ultra-pure water.

Currently, our Phoenix campus operates at a 65% water recycling rate, reusing wastewater in our chillers and air scrubbers. To push our conservation efforts even further, we broke ground in 2025 on our new 15acre Industrial Water Reclamation Plant (IRWP). Scheduled for completion in 2028, this state-of-the-art facility will enable "Near Zero Liquid Discharge" capabilities. At startup, it will boost our water recycling rate to 85%, with plans to reach 90% or higher. Which as a result, reduces our demand on the City of Phoenix’s water supply.

Our commitment to sustainability doesn't stop with water; we are actively implementing green practices across our entire campus today. We’ve designed our facilities with energy efficiency at their core, utilizing waste-heat recovery systems, LED lighting, and smart energy management for our manufacturing tools. If you visit us, you will see 14.5MW of solar panels that generate clean energy while providing welcome shade for parked vehicles. We also protect our local air quality using a rigorous two-stage control strategy for air emissions and have achieved an incredible 96% chemical waste recycling and reuse rate, minimizing the need for offsite disposal.

These initiatives are a key part of our record-setting $165 billion investment in U.S. chip production. For us, investing in Arizona means investing in its future. By pioneering advanced recycling and green technologies in a desert region, we hope to set a new global standard and prove that technological progress and environmental preservation can thrive together. BUILDING SMILES and Community in Anthem

BEFORE DR. NICHOLAS Romans discovered orthodontics, he knew he wanted to become a dentist. During dental school, he enjoyed many areas of dentistry, but orthodontics stood out because it combined problem-solving, long-term planning, and the opportunity to truly transform a patient’s smile and confidence.

After completing dental school and orthodontic residency in Missouri, Dr. Romans practiced in Boston before eventually making his way to Arizona. The sunshine, lifestyle, and outdoor opportunities first drew him west, but Anthem reminded him of the small-town values he grew up with in Kansas. The strong sense of connection, neighborly support, and family-centered spirit made Anthem feel like the right place to open his own practice, put down roots, and care for generations of local families.

Since opening Romans Orthodontics, Dr. Romans has felt warmly welcomed by the community, including local dentists, specialists, and families. He understands that trust is earned over time, especially in a close-knit community where relationships matter. That is exactly the kind of practice he hopes to build: one grounded in personalized care, comfort, education, and genuine connection. His goal is for every patient and family to feel at ease from the moment they walk through the door. Orthodontic care can feel unfamiliar, especially for children, teens, or adults who have waited years to address their smile. Dr. Romans believes education is one of the best ways to ease anxiety. He takes time to explain what he sees, review treatment options, and help each patient make confident decisions without feeling rushed.

For Dr. Romans, orthodontics is about more than straight teeth. Each patient comes in with different goals. Some want to feel more confident in photos, while others are focused on improving their bite, function, or long-term dental health. THE NIGHT ANTHEM MET TAYLOR SWIFT

Did Anthem Create Taylor Swift? Of course not.

BUTFOR ONE unforgettable night in November 2006, Anthem had the chance to see a future worldwide phenomenon before she became the biggest name in music. The Outlets at Anthem had booked a young, relatively unknown 16-year-old singer to perform at their fifth annual Christmas Tree Lighting. By the time the event arrived, however, everything had changed. During the eight months between booking her and her performance, Taylor Swift had begun breaking onto the country music scene with “Tim McGraw” and “Teardrops on My Guitar.” I remember sitting just a few feet away as Taylor tuned her guitar backstage while KNIX legends Tim and Willy prepared for the show. She was friendly, humble, and just another teenager with a guitar and a dream.

Sitting beside me were my two sons, Griffin and Grayson. They had the perfect opportunity to get a photo with Taylor, but they were so embarrassed they couldn’t bring themselves to ask. Looking back, that’s probably one of the funniest “what if” moments our family has. Today, that photo would have been priceless.

Before the performance, the autograph line was only about ten people deep to get autographs. Think about that for a second. Ten people. Once she finished signing, the general manager of the Outlets at Anthem, Joanne Truax, took Taylor to get ice cream with her daughters. It was simply a young artist enjoying a normal evening in Anthem before stadium tours, sold-out arenas, and worldwide fame.

Years later, Taylor reminded our community why so many people admire her beyond her music. On October 22, 2011, a courageous young Anthem girl named Katie Wagner, who was battling cancer, had one simple dream: to meet Taylor Swift. Taylor made that dream come true. Katie and her friends attended Taylor’s concert, met her backstage, spent time with her, and took photos that her family will treasure forever. Katie later passed away, but that experience became one of the brightest memories of her life.

Stories like Katie’s are why so many people continue to admire Taylor. Whatever your opinions on celebrity or politics, it’s hard to overlook the genuine kindness she has shown countless fans over the years.

Am I a full-fledged Swiftie? Not even close. But I am a fan of Taylor Swift—not just because she’s one of the greatest entertainers of her generation, but because I was fortunate enough to witness, right here in Anthem, the same humility, generosity, and authenticity that would eventually win over millions around the world. Did Anthem create Taylor Swift? No. But for one special night in 2006, Anthem got to say, “We knew her when.”

Life in Abundance Bloom Where You

Are Planted!

N 2021 I took a leap of faith and moved to Anthem with my husband, Paul. I’ll be honest, starting over felt pretty scary. It’s funny how everyone I‘ve talked to had to overcome that same fear of letting go and stepping into the unknown. We had a big, comfortable life back in California…. family, friends, a thriving business, charitable endeavors, hobbies, and a fabulous women’s group that fed my soul, but something told us that Anthem would have its blessings too.

Several chapters would close with that move, but one never knows what is waiting for them on the other side of change. The move was invigorating, and I felt ready to create something new. I’ve realized that while some things may come to an end in your journey, you can transplant the best parts of yourself just about anywhere. Perhaps, that’s where the saying, “Bloom Where You Are Planted” came from.

I can remember my husband telling me to enjoy the slower pace of Arizona. He said. “You don’t have to do all those things you used to do. Maybe you’ll write more books or take up golf.” While those things sounded great, there was something that I craved...I wanted to surround myself with the energy of women again. I didn’t want to forget what it’s like to hear women laughing around my kitchen island or miss out on women sharing their heart stories. I have always loved seeing women comfort and celebrate one another. I just knew that I had to start another women’s group in Anthem.

On a weekend when my husband took a golf trip, I grabbed my laptop and typed out the name, “Desert Bloom… Life in Abundance.” There it was…a new chapter of women showing up for one another. I didn’t know their names yet. The focus would be on women’s health and happiness. I would provide a space to talk about life…the joy, the struggles, the losses, and the moments of perseverance. My intention was to invite women into real life conversations so they may be inspired by another person’s courage.

I can’t tell you how many women have left my house feeling seen for the first time. Women are often comforted by the realization that they are not the only ones going through hard losses or trying to make peace with their past. They are quite often surprised to see others dealing with grief, disappointment, or feelings of inadequacy.

The name of the group came to me on a walk through the wash. The desert beauty is an amazing analogy for real life. A shriveled plant may appear lifeless, but it’s actually staging out its next incredible bloom. There’s something surprising about Arizona’s nature, and there’s something stunning about a woman who has weathered a storm or overcome harsh conditions in her life to find her true self.

Everything breathing is somehow preparing itself for new growth, and this speaks to the work women are doing together in safe circles like Desert Bloom. With the right support and kindness, each woman has the potential to transform herself. It makes no difference how old she is, what she looks like, where she came from, how many mistakes she’s made, or even how tired she is. Every part of HER is welcome!

We all have the potential to shape another person’s heart by being a good listener and offering unconditional love. That type of witnessing doesn’t always occur in our daily lives. We are far too busy and distracted from the inner self. This is why I provide the space for people to connect on a deeper level. Desert Bloom has a higher purpose than just socializing. It changes women from the inside out… on a soul level. They build self-awareness, confidence and love for themselves.

As the facilitator, I rotate topics and themes monthly. I am a Spiritual Author and a Practitioner in Mind, Body, Medicine. I love creating workshops that are helpful to living life with more grace and ease. Sometimes I have a guest speaker or author present a topic, while other times I myself may put together a program about joy, gratitude, self-care or stress management. Occasionally we may do an outing, service project, or exercise.

So, how can you become a part of it? Just follow the group online through Facebook, or you can reach out to Krista Gawronski through her website. The events are social, and for the sake of intimacy, they are held in a home setting. The women share nibbles, drinks, and conversations. No two nights are ever alike, and while this isn’t considered therapy, a lot of hearts are changed by this group. For me, there is no greater reward than to see a woman take hold of her heart and bloom just a little brighter.

A REVOLUTIONARY SPIRIT IN ANTHEM

WHENJEN MOVED to Anthem with her husband, Hunter, in 2015, she was ready to trade cold winters for Arizona sunshine. What she found was a community that quickly felt like home. “It has a family atmosphere,” she says. “It’s a very special community.” That sense of connection is one of the reasons Jen has spent years investing her time in local organizations, volunteer work, and community leadership. Whether through the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Anthem Rotary Club, or the Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce, service has become a central part of her life.

Jen became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in 2019 after researching her family history. Working with her local chapter, she discovered her connection to Lieutenant Wells Chase, a patriot who served during the American Revolution. Patriotism has long been important to Jen and her family. Her son served in the Navy, and several family members have military backgrounds. Living in Anthem, home to the Veterans Memorial, only strengthened that appreciation for American history and service.

The Daughters of the American Revolution is a women's service organization dedicated to education, historic preservation, and patriotism. Through DAR, Jen has participated in projects that help preserve and share American history with future

generations. One of the organization's most visible local accomplishments is the America 250 National Marker located near Anthem’s Veterans Memorial during her tenure as Chapter Regent. The marker commemorates the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States and was the first approved marker of its kind in Arizona.

Outside of DAR, Jen remains deeply involved in the community. She volunteers with the Anthem Rotary Club, is active in a local 12-step program and serves on the board of the Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce, where she is currently president-elect. Her volunteer background also includes mentoring students, serving in PTA and PTO leadership positions, and supporting numerous community initiatives.

When asked what she has learned through years of service, her answer is simple. “Knowing that even a little bit of help makes a difference in people’s lives.”

For residents who want to become more involved, Jen encourages them to start by asking questions and finding an organization that matches their interests. Her message to the community is one worth remembering: choose kindness, be less negative, and never underestimate the power of a smile. Sometimes the smallest actions can have the greatest impact.
