Preface During the first 10 years I (Randy) taught Communication Studies at the college level, I was on a quest to find the “right way” to teach. It was during my second decade of teaching that I realized that there was no one “right way” that would work for all teachers. Instead, I felt the journey involved finding a way that worked for me. Now that I've been teaching for many years , I’m beginning to discover that even the “right way” that worked for me a few years ago doesn’t always work anymore. Carl Jung wisely observed that, “As we get older, we discover that what once worked for us in the first half of life doesn’t always serve us in the second half. We need to open to new possibilities, different ways of thinking and feeling, and even new ways of being as we get older.” Whether you are young, middle-aged, or beyond; a first-time instructor or a teacher of many decades, I believe it is important for you and me to keep “open to new possibilities, different ways of thinking and feeling, and even new ways of being” as we travel this journey of the teacher. There is no final destination for the teacher, because it’s the journey that is the real goal. And the best traveling involves keeping open minds and hearts as we explore new ways to create stimulating and valuable learning experiences for our students. We need to share our ideas, activities, and impressions as we travel this journey of the teacher. Our journey never ends. This instructor’s manual for The Natural Speaker was written with our journey in mind. It’s not a booklet that tells you the correct way to teach, but rather, it serves as a map that sketches out some ideas and suggestions regarding different ways you might want to use The Natural Speaker in your class. It’s divided into two sections. Section One provides you with a summary of each chapter, discussion questions, and a sample course calendar for a semester class. Section Two gives sample true/false, multiple choice and essay questions for each chapter. We hope this manual will assist you in your efforts to make your course a valuable and enjoyable learning experience for your students. When you go to the grocery store, you select only those items you need and walk past the rest. Do the same with this booklet. Best of luck with your course and remember that your Communication Studies class will most likely be the only communication course your students will ever take. Let's make it their most significant learning experience! Randy Fujishin and Jared Fujishin

CHAPTER SUMMARIES AND TEST BANK
Chapter Summaries Chapter 1. Communicating With Others This first chapter deals with the basics of communication. It includes a model of communication, five principles of communication, and six interpersonal communication skills that will enhance the students' personal communication life. For many of your students, this public speaking class will be their introduction to the field of speech communication, so it's essential they learn some basic terminology and appreciate the importance of effective communication skills in their personal lives, as well as in their public speaking.
