Learning Activities

Nursing is a holistic profession that addresses the many dimensions necessary to fully care for a patient.

Nurses provide care to patients while functioning in multiple roles as care provider, educator, advocate, leader, change agent, manager, researcher, collaborator, and delegator.

LO 1.3 Analyze historical events in the evolution of nursing.

LO 1.4 Summarize nursing theories.

Historically, the nursing profession has evolved from a religious and military background to meet the nursing needs of society.

Nurses use nursing theories to guide their practice. Nursing theories

Large Group Activity: Provide the ANA and ICN definitions of nursing and ask students to list anything they think should be added to the definitions and explain why. Activity: Provide students with the ICN definition of nursing and have students provide specific examples for each element of the ICN definition. Large-Group Activity: Pulling from their own experiences, ask students to provide examples of when they have seen a nurse act as a care provider, educator, advocate, leader, change agent, manager, researcher, collaborator, or delegator. Small-Group Activity: Break students into small groups and assign each group one or two of the nursing roles discussed in this chapter. Ask students to review the case study in the textbook and find examples of the RN performing the role they have been assigned. Clinical Judgment Activity (General): Start a discussion of the difference between performing assigned nursing tasks (e.g., taking vital signs) and the importance of clinical judgment (e.g., recognizing that a patient’s temperature is steadily increasing). Provide students with specific examples and ask them to differentiate between whether an example is a set nursing task or an example of using clinical judgment. Discussion Topic: Ask students to identify how Florence Nightingale’s influences are still practiced in modern-day nursing. Online Activity: Have students research nursing during the Civil War and compare nursing practice then with today’s nursing practices and priorities. What advantages do today’s nurses have? What differing demands do they face now? Online Activity: Send students to a nursing theory website such as nursing-theory.org to find out more about a nursing theory or theorist. Ask students to state
