QUESTION 2. DEVELOPMENTAL FRAMEWORK Erik Erickson’s developmental theory: Paul is 37 years old and Mary is 35 years old. They are classified as being in the middle age. This two adults are classified as being in the generativity versus stagnation stage by Erickson. This stage stage begin by 35 years of age to 60 years of age. In this stage there is a need to grow outside self and family and be involved in helping next generation. This is a good period of adjusting to the discrepancy between one‟s dreams and one‟s actual accomplishments. Failure to achieve a sense of productivity in this stage often leads to psychopathological stagnation (Goldenberg, and Goldenberg, 2004; Becvar and Becvar, 2014).

Simon is nine years old. He is classified as being the school age boy. Simon is in the latency stage according to Erickson, the developmental tasks of this stage are industry versus inferiority stage. The basic task is to achieve a sense of industry which refers to setting and attaining personal goals and failure to do so leads to feeling of inadequacy and inferiority (Goldenberg, and Goldenberg, 2004; Becvar and Becvar, 2014). Stage of marriage that this family is in Mary and Paul are in the middle marriage period which commence from 10 to 20 years in a marriage. The emotional issues of this stage is post career planning and the in this stage the critical tasks of this stage is adjusting to mid-life changes, renewing marriage commitments and renegotiating the relationship (Goldenberg, and Goldenberg, 2004; Becvar and Becvar, 2014). Stages of family life cycle Simon is 9 years old. He is a school age child and the emotional issues involved encompass authorizing the child to socialize with other children and start friendship outside his home. The critical task of this stage incorporates extending family and society interaction, encouraging the child‟s educational progress and dealing with the increased activities and time demands (Becvar and Becvar, 2014). QUESTION 3 FIRST ORDER CYBERNETIC DESCRIPTION OF THE FAMILY AND APPLICATION OF THE PRICNICPLES From the first order perspective, Mr Paul‟s family can be described as tending towards maximum disorder; it can be described as experiencing unhealthy state due to the prevailing psychopathology. The therapist focuses on the relationships between family members and define pathology and its symptoms using the reference model, for example the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria is used by many as the reference model.
