Bullying has become one of the biggest issues amongst the younger generation in recent years. In order to gather all of the data that is required to show how bullying in schools and online effects young children I will first have to get approval from the board on my research topic. Once my topic has been approved, I will then need to brief possible participants and parents since the research will be conducted on young children and get their written consent. Since the study will be taking place in two different areas of Northern Virginia, I will first randomly select 10 middle school students and 10 high school students from the Loudoun

County School District whose parents have given consent. Although parents are required to give consent, I will also allow the student to consent to participate in the study. I will then randomly select another 10 middles school students and 10 high school students from the Alexandria City Public School System. Please keep in mind that these students will be selected from different
middles schools and different high schools in each area to ensure that personal bias is limited,
and demographic environment is expanded. Once I have selected all of the students from each
demographic area I will conduct interviews over a two-week period with all 40 students. These interviews will consist of two different kinds of questions for each student to gather the
necessary information for my topic. The first set of questions will consist of personal questions of who they are and where they come from just to get some background information in the
student’s personal life and family. The second set of questions will consist of whether each

student has been involved, experienced, or witnessed any kind of bullying and if applicable, how

they or others were bullied, whether online, on school premises, or by friends. Since children spend most of their time at school we want to see how they are influenced by bullying. “The
work atmosphere and social relations in classes both influence and are influenced by the children.” (Holen, Waaktaar, Lervåg, & Ystgaard, 2013). I will also provide a survey to each student on how bullying affects them.

2. DATA ANALYSIS Once I have gathered all of the information that is necessary for the study from each student during the interviews, I will then analyze all of the data that they provided. First, I will conduct a quantitative study review and analyze the statistics between the different age ranges, race, gender and social economic status in each participant and separate them by the different locations within Northern Virginia. This information will come from the first set of questions that were asked to each student during the interview process. “In addition to enhancing our

understanding of forms of bullying involvement by race and urbanicity, it is important to consider potential reasons why youth might perceive that they are at risk for victimization, such as discrimination, based on gender, race, religion, or socio-economic status.” (Goldweber, Waasdorp, & Bradshaw, 2012). The differences among each student not only helps us to
understand where victims of bullying come from but also shows us which demographic area of
students are more likely to become a victim of bullying and who experiences more bullying. By viewing the statistics of age ranges it will give us an idea of what age young children were when they first started to experience or witness any form of bullying and where it originated from.
Research has shown that young students start to experience some form of bullying in middle
school. Then I will conduct a qualitative study review of the second set of questions that were
asked to each student during the interview process. This process will focus on those students that

were either involved, experience or witness any form of bullying. I will analyze the attitudes of each student, how they feel about bullying, how bullying has affected them whether or not they

were victims and their friendships with others and how they are influenced. This information will help to determine what each student has gone though as a result of bullying. 3. CONTRIBUTION TO THE FIELD.

To ensure that parents, adolescents, and society across America understand how important it is to educate themselves on the effects of bullying in our schools and online, I would explain my findings of the study based on firsthand knowledge of what middle school students and high school students experience each day regardless of where they come from. Statistical data will be provided based on the data that was gathered to show where victims of bullying are affected the most based on age, race, gender, and social economic status. Although the study was only conducted in the Northern Virginia area, it can show people across America the kind of

similar environments that each student was affected. Studies have shown that young children in a lower social economic status will more likely become victims of bullying than a child in a
higher social economic status due to the kind of clothes children wear or how the annual income of a family. Some of the benefits of this research study will show parents what their children
may face or what they experience at their schools or online based on personal experience from some of the students in the area. “There is compelling evidence that school bullying affects
children’s health and well-being, with the effects lasting long into adulthood.” (Tippett & Wolke, 2014). In this study, parents, educators and students can learn that if their children or students are a victim of bullying, they are not alone, and they should try to prevent it from happening.
Others do experience some form of bullying and can educate themselves on how students are
indirectly or directly affected by it. With the information that was gathered, educators can learn

how to put a program in place for preventing bullying amongst the students. Parents will be able to educate themselves on how they children are affected, whether mentally, physically, or

academically; they will educate themselves on how to see the signs that their children may
possibly be a victim of bullying or may be the bully. Students can also learn about the resources that are out there to help them cope and stand up to those who are being a bully.

4. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS Some limitations that might present itself during my research would be the participates willingness to answer some of the questions. Although their privacy and identity would be protected, some young children may be hesitant to go in depth about their experiences or personal life out of fear of repercussion. Young children don’t want to be seen as a snitch because the bullying could probably get worse for them. High School students may also be reluctant to participate just to protect the reputation that they have built. Another limitation

would be the accuracy of admitting to an adult that the student may have been involved in some form of bullying. Adolescents do not want to be seen as the mean person or label themselves as a bully and would not throw themselves under the bus just for a research study. Another
limitation that I might face during my study would be the amount of survey questionnaires that
were provided to the students that participated in the not being turned in. Some students may be reluctant to turn them in because of it being a recorded document that possibly be traced back to them.
5. DISCUSSION
Society as a whole need to be aware of how young children are affected by different forms of bullying and what it can lead to such as academic failure, their mental status and
possibly suicide. We need to be educated on the kind of students that can affected and involve

ourselves more by preventing bullying amongst each other by creating programs or just being someone that a young adolescent can talk to. Learning about the different demographics of

where each student is affected can show where adults and educators need to be more involved.
Although there may be some limitations to gather information that I am looking for, there should be enough information to determine the effects of young children, how long it last, and what we
