Note: 

The Authorised Assignment Brief (AAB) used for generating this learner work is the same as the one provided by Pearson. Centres are expected to get the AAB fully internally verified prior to being issued to the learners.

The learner work generated is an exemplar of standard for a particular Learning Aim(s) and grade(s), and NOT a response to the entire task detailed in the Authorised Assignment Briefs. We therefore expect centres to use this resource to exemplify how to structure a response to a task. We also encourage centres to use this work to standardise their Assessment teams and demonstrate to learners the level of work expected to achieve the different targeted grades outcome.

In preparation for the first teaching from September 2016 and as a part of the on-going support that we offer to our centres, we have been developing support materials to help you better understand the application of Nationals BTEC Level 3 qualification. The following learner work has been prepared to demonstrate indicative standards at Pass, Merit and Distinction level across a unit. Did you know?...

We’ve worked closely with over 5,000 employers, universities, teaching professionals and trainers to develop the new BTEC Nationals. That means teacher and tutors can be confident their new BTEC courses contain the knowledge and employability skills students need to succeed at higher level study and in their chosen career.

BTEC Nationals provide work-related learning across a range of sectors. Delivering the knowledge, skills and under need to preparor their chosen career, BTEC Nationals offer progression to higher education, employment or further study.

BTEC Nationals use a combination of assessment styles to give your students confidence they can apply their knowledge to succeed in the workplace – and have the study skills to continue learning on higher education courses and throughout their career. This range of vocational assessments, both practical and written, mean students can showcase their learning and achievements to best effect when they take their next step, whether that’s supporting applications to higher education courses or potential employers.

BTEC Nationals are highly regarded by universities, further education colleges and employers. On successful completion of a BTEC National qualification, learners can progress to or within employment or continue their learning within the same or related areas of study, in higher education, degree and professional development programmes.

They provide a more practical, real-world way of learning and their value is widely recognised by teaching professionals, employers, higher education and students and can be studied full- or part-time.

Each programme of study covers a number of units, for which students must present evidence based on their work and studies to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they’ve developed on3 the course.

Vocational Scenario or Context

You are a newly appointes technical assistant at a large chemical plant, Chemcalequip. As part of your induction period and to progress in your role, you have to demonstrate skills in a range of practical procedures and techniques. Part of your role is to ensure equipment is calibrated and equipment and chemicals are safety checked. A key part of your job will be making and testing standard solutions using colorimetry and titration. You must demonstrate your ability to carry out these techniques. Evidence of your practical skills, along with your results, calculations, evaluation of the techniques and possible improvements will need to be submitted in a report(s).

Evaluate the accuracy and safety of the following quantitative procedures and techniques in relation to their outcomes. Task 1

a titration to accurately and skilfully determine the concentration of a sample of sodium hydroxide. In order to do this you must be observed preparing your solutions and standardising the hydrochloric acid to be used using Na2CO3. You will need to calibrate the

equipment you will use for this titration to include the pipette, any balances used and a pH meter. 

accurately and skilfully determine the concentration of copper sulfate using colorimetry. You will need to make dilutions for colorimetry standards for calibration of the equipment being used.

Produce a report of your practical work. Include results, calculations and graphs. Evaluate your results making sound judgements relating to their accuracy in the context of those obtained by other learners as well as published results.

You must identify and discuss any problems/issues in order to suggest improvements to the procedures and techniques. You must give a strong rationale for your improvements to improve accuracy and precision or, if no problems have been identified, justify the steps you took to gain your results.

You must also evaluate and discuss the health and safety aspects of the investigations and analytical techniques you have carried out, justifying why certain aspects are carried out in a particular way on safety grounds. Checklist of evidence required

A report on the use of Na2CO3 to standardise HCl and how that is used to standardise NaOH. Include the pH curve from the titration. A report on the determination of the concentration of copper sulfate using colorimetry to include results, calculations and calibration graph. You must also include your results from checking the calibration of the pipette, balance(s) and pH meter for titration and for the equipment used for colorimetry. Observation records showing how you worked safely 

preparing standard solutions,

calibrating equipment,

determining concentration of copper sulfate using colorimetry.

Criteria covered by this task: Unit/Criteria reference

To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to:

A.D1

Evaluate the accuracy of procedures and techniques used in titration and colorimetry in relation to outcomes and suggest improvements.

A.M1

Demonstrate skilful application of procedures and techniques in titration and colorimetry to accurately determine the concentration of solutions.

A.P1

Correctly prepare and standardise solutions for titration and colorimetry.
