PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY SCHOOLS PROMOTE RECYCLING
Computers are recycled to provide access and career readiness skills to thousands of students throughout Virginia By H. Dale Keeton, Ph.D.
A program that began at Forest Park High School in Prince William County in 2000 has since been carried forward to the entire state of Virginia, involving thousands of students. VA STAR (Student Training And Refurbishment)is a state-wide program administered by Prince William County Public Schools. Students refurbish used or surplus computer equipment donated by government agencies and private companies. Once refurbished, these computers are given to students, families, and organizations who need them.
Students in the VA STAR program learn skill sets and IT repair certifications that can develop into well-paying jobs. The Commonwealth of Virginia has awarded a grant of $210,000 over a two-year period to expand the VA STAR computer refurbishment program. The funds will come from the State Productivity Investment Fund. More than 4,400 refurbished computers have been provided to Virginia schools, students and their families, and organizations. The Education Foundation for Prince William County Schools, SPARK, coordinates this initiative.
Computers are donated by organizations such as Lockheed Martin and Prince William County Government and then paired with monitors provided by B-Thrifty. The next computer giveaway is scheduled for March 25th. Forest Park and Battlefield High School students have refurbished computers which will be given to forty hard-working Fred Lynn Middle School students. Under the leadership of Chuck Drake, VA STAR is now in more than 20 school districts and 45 sites state-wide with plans to expand to even more schools.
