SALVATION ARMY ANGEL TREE

To Help PWC children with toys and clothes for Christmas By H. Dale Keeton, Ph.D.

Each Christmas season the Salvation Army provides gifts of toys and clothes to children of low income families through the Angel Tree ministry. Community members who participate are matched with a child who may not receive any gifts at all outside of this program. Locally, The Salvation Army, Prince William County Corps, began taking applications in late September and early October and were able to sign up more than 1000 children. The parents were allowed to list three gifts that their child would like to receive as well

as their clothing size. Since November 22, angel tags have been hung in various stores and malls so that the public could buy gifts for these children. Once the gifts were purchased, they were taken to the angel tree warehouse for distribution on December 17 and 18. On average, donors have found that a donation of roughly $75.00 has provided the angel with many (if not all) of the items on their wish list.

Hackbarth of the Prince William County Corps has said, “ For participating companies and groups, the sponsorship program is a wonderful opportunity for employees to give back to their community through a fun and heartwarming tradition.”

By “adopting an angel” many donors have found that the personal connection with a child in the community has become a special tradition. Captains George and Robin

While it is too late to participate in the 2013 program, we would ask our readers to make a note to “adopt an angel” in 2014.

Each child in this local program is from Prince William County. He or she must be 12 years old or under and is provided with three or more gifts.
