In the trenches of the culture war, two aspiring podcasters in Southern California explore the intersection of Q-Anon and yacht rock, where they become immersed in a dangerous quest to ﬁnd an elusive pop singer.

SYNOPSIS

Orange County, CA. 2019. Brad and Greg got issues and time to kill. They start the Freedom For America podcast to shed light on stuff they think the lame-stream media is intentionally covering up. The duo falls victim to the YouTube algorithm, plunging into conspiracies like #PizzaGate, #SaveTheChildren, and #ClintonBodyCount. As former child predator hunters, their passion for truth and justice is obscured by their gullibility to fringe phenomena. The algorithm takes them on a deeper dive, where they discover a song called “Take a Q (Anonymous Lover)” by an 80’s yacht rock pop singer named Bobby Bridges. They want to interview Bobby... but he’s been off the grid since 1990. This sets Brad and Greg off on a gonzo-style investigative journalistic crusade, with consequences far greater than they could imagine.

Rebecca is a radio broadcaster and host of “Pop Sensibility” for KCLU NPR on the California Coast. They earned a B.A. in Gender Studies from Oberlin College and an M.A. in Journalism from Georgetown University, before returning to their native California. Their favorite band is Tegan and Sara.

TONY RIO

Tony Rio is the estranged best friend and former manager of Bobby Bridges, now living out his late 60’s in a state of Peter Pan Syndrome in Marina Del Rey. His family immigrated to the U.S. from Portugal in 1972. His favorite band is Hall & Oates.

BARBARA BRIDGES

Barbara is the ex-wife and collaborator of Bobby Bridges.

Now retired from the music industry, she runs an animal rescue out of her home in Los Feliz. Her favorite band is Starship.

BLAKE SHOWALTER

Blake is a bouncer and bartender who used to score drugs for Bobby Bridges and Tony Rio. He served time at San Quentin for armed robbery in the 90’s and now works at the Santa Barbara Goodwill as part of his release. His favorite band is ZZ Top.

Bingo is the loyal Jack Russell

Terrier of Bobby Bridges and co-captain of the Dreamer II. His favorite band is The Baha Men.

Vasily is a proliﬁc pop music producer with alleged ties to Russian organized crime. He immigrated to Brighton Beach, NY and later Los Angeles in the mid-1970’s. Whereabouts currently unknown. His favorite Vesyolye Rebyata.

Bobby is a defamed singer-songwriter who ﬂed the U.S. after the infamous Painted Cave Fire that devastated Santa Barbara in the summer of 1990. He stages a comeback tour in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. His favorite singer is Bobby Bridges.

Set upon the verge of conspiracies during and after the 2016 election, Anonymous Lover explores a world in which our perspectives are warped by the echo chambers of social media and vicious news cycle. The series is an NPR/ BBC style radio drama and satire about media consumption, identity politics, pop culture, psychology, and 1980’s nostalgia in the post-truth era.

It combines the mythos of True Detective, slapstick adventure of the Two Coreys, gonzo journalism of Hunter S. Thompson, and musical parody of Christopher Guest. An original soundtrack, eﬀects, and score provides a rich emotional landscape for the listener.
