LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTORS

Dear A Noise Within family,

Thank you for making Season 32 our biggest ever—breaking multiple box office records and more sold-out performances than any other season in our history . Our success sets a high bar for the next season, promising an equally thrilling lineup of productions designed around the theme of “True Grit” featuring powerful stories that delve into the depths of tenacity and determination .

The season begins with Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth, an off-the-wall comedy that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity Next, August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson depicts the complexities of family legacy and the determination of feuding siblings to uphold their sense of identity Shakespeare’s Macbeth follows, presenting a haunting portrayal of ambition leading to horror and madness . Jane Eyre offers Elizabeth Williamson’s adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s timeless novel and the indomitable spirit of its titular heroine as she forges her own path The season concludes with the award-winning musical A Man of No Importance, by Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty, and Lynn Ahrens, which explores the hard-fought battles for love, artistic expression, and community .

In the middle of it all is A Christmas Carol, the festive classic that has been enchanting audiences in Southern California for over a decade, becoming a beloved tradition for many families

Subscription renewals for 2024-25 are underway, but you can contact the box office now if you want to be a subscriber for next season . We will be seating new subscribers after June 1

We’re excited to share this unforgettable and gritty new season with you, and we thank you for your continued support of A Noise Within Julia Rodriguez-Elliott and Geoff Elliott CO-ARTISTIC DIRECTORS

ABOUT THE AUTHOR GEORGE BERNARD SHAW

George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) was an Irish playwright, critic, political activist, and essayist . He wrote more than sixty plays, as well as music and literary criticism; five (unpublished) novels; short stories; political tracts; numerous “position papers” for the socialist Fabian society; and countless letters . He received the Nobel prize for literature in 1925 .

“Anglo-Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw writing in notebook at time of first production of his play Pygmalion.” 2014 .

Although born in Dublin, Shaw moved to London at the age of twenty and lived there for the rest of his life; he did not even visit Ireland for another twentynine years He was essentially self-taught, spending his days reading at the British Museum and his evenings attending lectures and debates . He did not achieve success with his dramatic works until he was in his forties, but once he did so, his success was enormous .

Shaw was a highly complex figure whose social and political views often appeared contradictory . Although an ardent socialist, he was intrigued by, and even approving of, many aspects of Fascism He greatly admired Stalin, whom he commended, for trying “to get something done .” He was an active member of the Fabian Society, which advocated achieving the goals of democratic socialism but through means of gradual change, rather than by revolutionary overthrow He was a committed vegetarian; he was also opposed to vaccines . He was sympathetic to the plight of many oppressed peoples, yet later in life he espoused eugenics .

Above all, Shaw goaded people—including the audiences who attended his plays—into questioning their own cherished assumptions about the world in which they lived . And he had a remarkable capacity to deliver his provocations with humor, even when it was at his own expense ♦

INTRODUCING GalaPro AT A NOISE WITHIN:

Enjoy closed captions of our performances right to your smartphone!

Thanks to the generosity of the Perenchio Foundation, ANW is thrilled to be rolling out a new service for patrons who would benefit from access to closed captions of our live performances The GalaPro app (available on iOS and Android devices) provides closed captions for patrons to view on their own mobile devices . 90% of Broadway theatres are using GalaPro, and A Noise Within is delighted to be the first regional theatre in Southern California to install it permanently!

GalaPro operates on a closed internal network via “Airplane Mode” and prevents sounds, texts and emails from disturbing patrons during use . We encourage patrons who could benefit from the GalaPro closed captioning to follow the instructions provided below to install this app on their smartphones.*
