lines. freehand line practice getting down to the basics. line drawing on a2. the first introduction that i got into architecture. something that can be simply said but in execution may not be as easy to do. through this exercise, i was able to learn how to control line weight using a singular pencil as well as how to remain consistent throughout the whole drawing process. through this, i was also able to apply skills on hatching to my following exercises.

points. lines. planes. villa savoye reducing. directing. villa savoye was le corbusier’s take on modernism, allowing him to find a style free of decoration, historical ties and articulated the functionality of the building in a pure form. through analysing the use of space and the resultant effect that solid wall placements had with light, there was a revelation, that every wall and every object had its purpose. it was through villa savoye that strengthened my understanding of circularity in a building and to take into account how people use and interact in a space.

i n t e r i o r i t y. e x t e r i o r i t y. golden mile complex rethinking. rediscovering. built during a time when architects were vocal and explored the limits of their visions, golden mile was created as a brutalist, high rise building. this building was created as a live-work-play environment and was previously thought to become the 2nd CBD. nss studio had the privilege to have a discussion with an associate at dp architects which unveiled visions of golden mile complex that i did not expected. through analysing golden mile, i had a vision of what golden mile could have become as well as analysed the vignettes of golden mile through the building, zooming into the little details that it possessed.

complex geometries. fluidity in chaos understanding spatial use. mentality cause-and-effect. fluidity in chaos explores the usage of space in an mrt cabin of one of the most used lines in singapore being the north-south line. integrating complex geometries with data of the movement of people in and out of the cabin and their choices of where they choose to stand or sit, reflect greatly on how pre-conceived mentality has shaped movement. understanding how people interact and use a space is one of the fundamentals of creating a space. despite the train being a temporary space where people inhabit, it has still become one of the integral spaces that we spend a significant amount of time in.

final model perspective hybrid. ink. pencil. 2B. this model was derived from the movement of people as the train travels at different points in time on the line.

the movement was first drafted in curves then lofted as a volume to show the undulations and the missed movements.

computational design thinking. generative design. melodic harmonies converging. emerging. inspired by the dance of the little swans. an interdisciplinary exploration between architecture, choreography and music, the study delves into how the movements of dance and intensity of music can inspire and provoke architecture in its form. melodic harmonies is a visual union of different components that compose a performance. through this analysis, i wanted to make the dance an experience, not just in terms of movement but also to feel the music as a space.

p i e c i n g d a n c e a n d m u s i c t o g e t h e r. through computational design thinking, i was able to arrive at this drawing of imposing the dance onto the music sheet.

the foreground shows circular melodies of the left hand carrying the main melody of the song, overpowering the right hand. the head notations are imposed onto the piano, placed in order of the flow of dance along the stage. the different hatching can be placed at different hierarchies - signifying how great the movement is at that point in time.

discovering through the cracks. head notation recoded

the head notations are then translated onto a volume with the amount of protrusions representing the intensity of movements that a dancer makes at the time of when they use that particular head movement.

the 10 sets of morphed volumes are then placed in plan according to the dancers’ movements across the stage as previously analysed.

final model. plywood encased in acrylic.

this model is encased in acrylic to show how the dancers are set on a stage separate from us viewers and that from different seats, we would be able to have a different experience of the dance. this can also be experienced through the model itself by having a 360 view around the whole model.
