As part of the 2023 Steelcase Student Design Competition, NEXT is a progressive and global Architecture and Interior Design firm based in Los Angeles, California and looking to expand by opening a new office space in the heart of Dallas, Texas. In a post-pandemic world, the focus of the project was to create a new system of workplace design for upcoming generations. With a team of 46 employees occupying the space, the design reflects the company’s values of connectivity, innovation, flexibility, and creativity.

Concept Located in Dallas, TX, a city that is known for its “wide sky,” the NEXT Office will be located on the third floor, looking out upon the entire horizon. From the fast-paced, busy, city life, all the way to the peaceful, open, green plains, the view encompasses it all. The idea of the horizon promotes balance between work and rest, just as there is a balance between city and land. It represents endless opportunities, new experiences, as well as the possibility of personal outreach that remain at the forefront of the company’s values.

Located in the heart of Paderborn, Germany, Evergreen is a senior living community built around connection and growth. Evergreen features many amenities such as a three-story fitness center, a restaurant and rooftop bar, rooftop gardens with a putting green, the facility, giving residents everything they need just steps from their room. The facility houses 15 double-person residences and 23 single-person residences, each strategically placed along the floor to ceiling windows giving abundant natural light.

Concept Based on the national tree of Germany, the oak tree, the design of Evergreen thoroughly mirrors the characteristics of this tree: strength, longevity, growth, and deep roots. Just as the oak tree has an incredibly long lifespan of up to 1,000 years, Evergreen residents are given many spaces that allow them to thrive and prosper late into life. Materials, such as consistently repeated white oak wood elements and indoor plants, bring the fruitful nature outside to the inside, reinforcing the concept of “Evergreen.”

Amidst the beautiful and peaceful desert environment, this retreat will provide an escape from the busy and stressful life of an artist. The Oasis is a place for hand weaving artists of all kinds to relax and reset. With a campus of six residences and a grand community space, the design features calming colors for rest, minimal decoration for the artists' personal styles to shine through, and beautiful outdoor views to inspire their creativity. With natural materials and plants showcased throughout the spaces, the outside desert landscape will penetrate the interior, evoking rest and relaxation.

Hand-Crafted Work
Platonic Solids In meshing the organic form of the human body with the angular structure of the platonic solids , a clothing piece was formed. With an all black design, the top remains simple and classy, while still very sophisticated and complex. This process emphasized the importance of craft and an understanding of the human body. With the constraints of the large gallery in an on campus building, a large student lounge space was formed. With the intention of creating a space for students to escape their studio desks, the goal was to provide a restful and inspiring space that nurtures community. The combination of natural light and shadows with the mix of wooden accents gives a sense of peace.
