WELCOME MESSAGE TOP GLASS WEST CONTINUES TO GROW Thank you for attending Top Glass West. We know you have other options – Glasstec is happening in Europe right now and BuildEx is tomorrow right here in Calgary. When we started Top Glass West it was partly an acknowledgement that there were very few events for the architectural glass industry in western Canada. That’s changed, but the continuing support we receive from you tells us our team is doing something right and delivering a program that gives value to your business. As always, we are wide open to comments and suggestions that can make this show even better. Evidence for that support will be visible on our show floor, which is half again as large this year as it was last year. Western Canada’s glazing suppliers are taking note and showing their eagerness to meet you. I always say you can learn as much chatting with vendors at their booths as you can attending education sessions, so please take advantage of this opportunity. We’re immensely thankful to our exhibitors and our great sponsors, Flexijet, Opera, and Richelieu, who have gone the extra mile to make Top Glass West happen.
Thanks of course to Insul-Lite for being such great hosts and welcoming attendees through their incredible fabrication facility yesterday. When glass people share what they do with other glass people, the whole sector rises. Finally, thanks to the Provincial Glaziers Association of Alberta and the Glass and Architectural Metal Association for their support and participation. Without the help of grassroots organizations like theirs, we interlopers from Toronto would never be able to host a successful show here. And thanks to our national glass associations, Fenestration Canada and the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance, for bringing their support and expertise. Getting involved with all these organizations delivers benefits for your business beyond what you might expect. This welcome message reads a bit like an Oscars acceptance speech with all the thank-yous but when we see your smiling faces here, we feel like we’ve won the biggest prize of all.
We have another outstanding lineup of presenters here this year. Thanks to them for their time and expertise. They don’t get paid – these top experts are sharing their knowledge out of a genuine desire to advance this industry. It’s so wonderful that so many of them want to do this every year.

SCHEDULE AT A GLANCE 9:30 AM THE CROSS-COUNTRY CODES AND STANDARDS UPDATE Presenter: Amy Roberts, FGIA Canadian Codes and Advocacy Director Staying on top of the shifting sands of Canadian building codes and international glass and glazing standards is what Amy Roberts does. The Top Glass West audience will receive a valuable update from inside the committees that make the rules we all follow, including: • Canada’s first code limit on allowable interior heat in the BC building code; • New limits on solar heat gain in the National Building Code; • The shutdown of the Canadian General Standads Board and what that means for glass standards in Canada; • A preview of proposed changes for the 2030 cycle, including changes to wired glass rules, window-opening control devices and the addition of prescriptive compliance pathways in Tier 2 of the National Energy Building Code; • Proposals to add affordability considerations to code changes. 10:45 AM YOU GET WHAT YOU INSPECT, NOT WHAT YOU EXPECT: PREPARING FOR EFFECTIVE SITE INSPECTIONS AND UNDERSTANDING WHAT ENGINEERS REALLY LOOK FOR BECAUSE THE DEVIL IS ALWAYS IN THE DETAILS Presenter: David Vadocz, principal and senior structural specialist at RDH Building Science David Vadocz will explain why expectations fail when they aren’t backed by inspections at every stage of building. He’ll share his knowledge of how to run effective site inspections that catch the details that cause problems later. Avoiding delays and callbacks isn’t magic – it’s the result of best practices that Vadocz can show you.

12:30 PM (ALMOST) LIGHTER THAN AIR: THE REMARKABLE PROPERTIES OF AEROGEL IN GLAZING APPLICATIONS Presenter: Joe Menchefski, vice-president of sales and marketing at Advanced Glazings and host of the Better Buildings for Humans podcast Expert construction technology communicator, Joe Menchefski, will explain aerogel – an amazing material with insulating properties that are only now being widely understood. You’ll hear how innovative companies are using aerogel as fill in insulating units and as facade insulation to achieve amazing thermal performance with a fraction of the weight and material of other methods. At a time when Canada needs major overhauls to the efficiency of its existing buildings, aerogel will be an important tool in glaziers’ hands. 1:45 PM FROM THE TRENCHES OF THE TRADE WAR: THE CURRENT STATE OF TARIFFS AND COUNTERTARIFFS AFFECTING OUR INDUSTRY Presenters: Alan Dewar, executive vice-president of client service and regulatory affairs at GHY International Corie Koropatnicki, Director of Client Services, USA Alan Dewar will update Top Glass West on the what’s in place now, what might be coming in the future and how to mitigate the impact of the unprecedented trade barriers erected in the last year. When it comes to tariffs, there are as many interpretations as there are border guards. As a leader at a top customs brokerage with major international glass companies as clients, Dewar brings the inside word from people who are dealing directly with Ottawa officials. Joining Alan will be Corie Koropatnicki, Director of Client Services, USA, who will provide a U.S. trade update focused on emerging tariff developments, regulatory changes, and practical mitigation strategies. Drawing on her experience supporting companies operating across the Canada-U.S. border, Koropatnicki will share insights into how businesses are adapting to an increasingly complex and unpredictable trade environment
