EDITOR’S LETTER

The true value of tech support

he more the security industry grows and develops, the more important its marketing, communications and technical support systems become.

Thankfully, the industry is generally quite effective in communicating its value proposition. There’s some “inside baseball” knowledge you need to really understand any industry but security’s message is generally one of: we help protect people, property and assets.

Over the years, that definition has widened to include other value-adds such as providing context and information that serves a purpose beyond security.

An example would be a surveillance analytic that can help a retailer manage pedestrian traffic flow in a brick-and-mortar location by telling them how many people are in that store at any given time, and their most likely route around the aisles.

There’s also much tighter integration between security and smart building systems these days, providing property managers the added benefits of data generated by surveillance and access control systems.

As security vendors add more services and features to their products, effective communication increasingly becomes an imperative. A software upgrade, for example, might offer huge improvements over a previous version, but if no one knows about it, it could get lost in the void.

from dozens of different companies. The most successful will be those that not only deliver a quality product but use an effective marketing strategy to reach their intended audience and work collaboratively with the channel and end users.

Our cover story looks at the sweet spot vendors can occupy by being supportive of both their integration partners and end customers. Good marketing will raise a company’s profile in the eyes of potential buyers, and good support will keep them coming back.

Vendors are uniquely positioned in that they are the most qualified experts on their own products. By offering this expertise as a service where it’s needed, they can help to ensure that their products are being installed, maintained and used at optimal levels.

Read the story for more details on how this works in practice and in partnership with integrators, but I expect we’ll see more of these kinds of offerings in the future as products become more complex and feature-rich.

Sam Shalaby charts new course for Wavestore

Since acquiring U.K.-based VMS company Wavestore earlier this year, Sam Shalaby has put the wheels in motion to expand its presence in North America.

Shalaby is an Ottawa-based entrepreneur and a well-known face in the Canadian security market. His previous company, Feenics, a provider of cloud-based access control systems, was acquired by ACRE in 2021. He is also the founder of systems integrator Future Security Controls, which became part of Convergint in 2013 via acquisition.

Shalaby closed the deal on Wavestore in July of this year, becoming the new owner and CEO.

“My whole interest [in Wavestore] was driven by a combination of factors, primarily centred around the company’s product line,” he says, describing the software as user-friendly and highly scalable. “They have an innovative approach on their video management platform. They do it a little differently. That intrigued me.”

Shalaby says he was also taken with Wavestore’s approach to customer service and attention to detail, which can help to elevate a company in the highly competitive market of video management tools. “They’re very passionate about

says Shalaby. Wavestore will introduce a new dealer program in the coming months and has also hired a marketing company to assist with promotions.

what they’re doing. I was impressed by their expertise,” he says.

Originally founded as Wavelet Technology in 2000, Wavestore has historically served U.K., European and Middle Eastern markets with limited exposure in other parts of the world. Shalaby says one of the first steps for Wavestore under new ownership will be to raise its profile in North America. The company has opened a new office in Ottawa as a platform for growth and increased its headcount.

Toronto-based security industry veteran Richard Coombs recently joined Wavestore as vice-president of sales for the Americas, along with seven other new-hires in Canada and four in the U.S. The company has also hired several more people in Europe and plans to add more

staff in the new year.

“Our recent hires in the U.S. and Canada will bolster our sales in North America,” explains Shalaby.

“Our focus is really to make the North American market a much, much bigger footprint than we have currently... My focus is Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.”

Shalaby says he is also changing the company’s approach to selling by going to market with dealers and value-added resellers rather than through distribution. A former integrator himself, Shalaby says close partnerships can make a big difference in raising a company’s profile with potential customers.

“You have to give the integrator the respect they need and keep supporting them. You need them,”

In a few short months, Shalaby has reset Wavestore for growth in North America and shaken up its go-to-market strategy. However, the company remains based in the U.K. and almost of its employees have made the transition to new ownership. New products will be introduced into the market soon and Shalaby says Wavestore will be leveraging cloud-based technology to drive innovation.

A serial entrepreneur, Shalaby says he is thrilled to be in the driver’s seat again at a new company. “Embarking on a new venture is an exhilarating journey,” he says. “It’s both exciting and challenging. It’s maybe the challenge that drives me. I’m going to give it all I’ve got.”

ABI Research: Video Surveillance as a Service changing the revenue equation

Security customers are on the hunt for scalable data solutions to meet their video needs.

This demand will create more opportunities for cloud providers and drive global cloud data and analytic services revenue in the video surveillance market to US$25 billion in 2030, according to ABI Research.

“The video surveillance market is experiencing a transformation as more cloud video surveillance systems emerge, diversifying a market that capital expenditure costs have historically dominated,” said Lizzie Stokes, IoT networks & services analyst, ABI Research, in a press release.

“Enterprise companies, lines of business, and small and medi-

um enterprises (SMEs) are looking to take advantage of surveillance insights and are searching for new storage and analytics service models to ease implementation, drive faster time to market, lower costs and improve ROI.”

According to ABI, surveillance investments are moving away from expensive new camera deployments towards more cloud data services.

Revenue streams will diversify as more customers pay for video services through a recurring fee model.

“VSaaS vendors are redefining how video surveillance can be offered and deployed,” said Stokes.

More details are available in ABI’s report, IoT and Video Surveillance: Revenue Model Evolution.

Mall of America updates surveillance

Mall of America (MOA) in Minnesota recently announced upgrades to its surveillance and security systems.

The retail facility opened in 1992 and draws 32 million visitors annually. A popular tourist destination, it comprises 5.6 million square feet housing 50 restaurants, more than 500 stores, mini golf, arcades, the state’s largest aquarium, and the largest indoor theme park in the U.S. Working with integration partner Collins Electrical Construction Co., MOA’s recent security upgrades include intelligent Axis cameras integrated into a Genetec VMS. Cameras deployed include AXIS Q63 PTZ Camera Series, AXIS M50 PTZ Camera Series, and AXIS P37 and P47 Panoramic Camera Series.

“There are so many different environments within Mall of America, and the new cameras provide us with the advanced features and flexibility we need to meet each area’s unique surveillance challenges,” said Will Bernhjelm, vice-president of security, Mall of America, in a statement.

Middle East energy companies invest in safety gear

Calgary-based Blackline Safety announced it has secured deals this year with three leading energy companies in Oman, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates (UAE).

These oil and gas giants are purchasing equipment including portable gas detectors, area gas monitors and Blackline’s G7 Bridges to protect their workers at various sites across the Middle East.

Several product deliveries have been made with the balance to come over the next year, according to the company.

“Customers are asking for connected safety in the field and remote locations,” said Peter Attalla, vice-president, international sales, Blackline Safety, in a statement. “We started with piloting our lone worker solution, and now they are purchasing our full suite of gas detection products.”

• BCD announced Jim Gross as the company’s new CEO.

• Montreal-based VuWall appointed Leo Bull as its new executive vice-president of sales for North America.

A California municipality has selected 3D LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) from Quanergy Solutions for pedestrian safety in the city’s underground railways.

Individuals trespassing onto train tracks pose a significantly safety and liability issue. According to Quanergy, traditionally surveillance systems were ineffective in the low-light, complex underground environments.

The municipality deployed Q-track, an integrated solution that combines long-range 3D LiDAR sensors with advanced perception software, enabling “hyper-accurate detection,” and reducing alarm fatigue and false alarms.

The city now reports a 100 per cent detection rate when pedestrians are on the tracks, says Quanergy. The company’s LiDAR solutions are deployed at critical infrastructure sites around the world.

• Dan Small, who has served as the general manager of Armstrongs National Alarm Monitoring for the past 20 years, has been promoted to company president.

LESSONS LEARNED

Top 10 factors that drive price

These are the main points to consider when selling, or considering the sale, of your business

here are several factors that determine what price you will get when you sell your business. Let me list what I think are the most important:

1. Size of your business

The fact is that size counts. For example, 5,000 alarm accounts will most likely fetch a larger multiple of recurring monthly revenue (RMR) or higher price than 1,000 accounts. A $10 million dollar fire or integration company will attract higher multiples of earnings than a $2-3 million dollar company. The same is true to some degree with publicly traded companies.

2. Cash flow

When figuring out what to pay for a company, a buyer is going to want to determine the cash that the company will throw off. The cash flow from a company is not always obvious, even to the seller. Larger cash flow is part of the reason why larger businesses sell for more. It is also why buyers of alarm accounts generally pay more for higher priced accounts and why they pay attention to attrition on an account base. Account bases with higher attrition produce less cash flow in the end. As a seller, try to calculate what the annual cash flow is from your business.

3. How much RMR you have RMR as revenue in any market is generally worth more than one-time installation or service revenue. RMR reduces risk for the buyer because by definition it recurs month in and month out. This is why monitored accounts are worth so much and why integrators are always encouraged to try to get maintenance contracts (another form of RMR) on everything they sell.

4. Do you have something proprietary?

Warren Buffett always talked about whether a business has a “moat” around it — something that other businesses have difficulty duplicating. If you don’t have one, try to create one. Become the go-to company in some part of the security industry. Proprietary businesses will, most of the time, be more valuable.

5. Little or no concentration of revenue

This is again all about risk to the buyer. That is why buyers will ask an alarm company whether they have multi-site accounts or ask an integration business whether any one customer accounts for more than 10 per cent of total revenue. They want to know about risk.

6. Good management team in place

Businesses that depend on their owners for too much are almost always riskier businesses to buy and therefore less valuable than those that do not — unless the owners are going to stay in place. Having a good management team that can run the business without too much input from owners is always a good thing.

7. Is there a solid pattern of growth in revenue?

Companies showing significant growth in their revenue over the previous three years will almost always sell for more. If you can’t get growth in your alarm account base, then try to get it in either the installation or service part of your business.

8. Canvass the market extensively when you sell

This is more important than many owners realize. I have seen brokers or investment bankers on certain deals contact 100 potential buyers. It’s tough to do that in Canada where the market is smaller but the principle stills stands. If you or your broker don’t solicit buyers widely, it is very unlikely you will get the best possible

price. This has happened to me before. When contacting someone I did not think would be that interested in a business, I sometimes find that they are actually interested and make a very good offer.

9. General economic conditions when you sell

This can be a factor in deals, although I maintain good companies can sell almost anytime. This is not such an important factor with the security industry because companies have recurring monthly revenue. All else being equal, it pays to sell in better economic times. Valuations are generally higher and banks are lending more easily.

10. The industry that you are in

The fact is that some industries are more attractive than others at certain points in time. Also, whole industries come and go. The good news for all of us is security is generally considered a good industry to be in and one that has shown good growth. Outsiders like private equity like to invest in the security industry.

When I think back over the deals I have been part of, most of these 10 factors have figured in all of them. If you are thinking of selling, this is a good list to go through to see how many boxes your business ticks.

PRACTICAL SECURITY

Cloud is not one size fits all

Understand storage options so you can then offer a safe, effective solution to your clients

Trying to position yourself with the evolving trends in the security industry is always a challenge.

You are in business to provide a service and make money, otherwise there is no reason to be in business.

As much as we want to provide an ethical, professional service, there is still a bottom line that must be met. Delivering quality, ethical service and maintaining profit is not always easy so we have to be continually looking at where the market is going.

“In the cloud” is one of the most used phrases I have heard in the past couple of years. CCTV – in the cloud. Access control – in the cloud. If this is where your business is going, you need to understand a few things so you can have informed conversations with your customers.

First, let’s get the obvious out of the way. “The cloud” is just a computer(s) located outside your client facility. How you get to the cloud and how the cloud is managed is what you need to know. If you are working with a corporate entity, they will be asking questions pertaining to your cloud service — questions about security, redundancy and accessibility.

You need to be able to respond to these questions with informed answers that will ad-

“You need to be able to respond to these questions with informed answers.”

dress their operational as well as security requirements.

Is cloud storage better or more efficient? Is cloud storage less expensive or more expensive? Is cloud storage more secure or less secure? Each of these questions requires knowledge. There is no universal answer as it depends entirely on the cloud service provider or the type of service being delivered.

Earlier in 2023, a global security issue within the MOVEit file transfer system was revealed. The breach compromised the personal information of tens of thousands of Nova Scotians, among others.

This is personal identifiable information that has been stored in servers for government use. The information breached included current and past employees of government departments, utility service customers, students, business owners, employment applicants, pension recipients, detainees in correctional facilities, and others.

The government of Nova Scotia has fol-

lowed up with letters and offers of credit monitoring for those affected. Yet the personal information of Nova Scotians who trusted the government agencies to protect their information has been exposed. There will be hard costs to this breach as well as intangible costs.

This type of breach is why you need to know about the security of a cloud service you may be offering. You will collect identifiable information of people within your client facility — names, faces, licence numbers as well as other data that requires protection.

This is not a knock against cloud services. For the most part, they are safe, reliable and make strong business sense. If you cannot explain how the information is protected, you need to understand it better before offering it to your customers. The cloud offers you and your customers options that are continually evolving, and will be beneficial to your business and to your customers’ business.

Before you offer the service, take the time to educate yourself, your team and ultimately your customer about the real benefits and risks associated with cloud services and storage.

CANASA UPDATE

Anticipation is high for SCC in Toronto

A summer of successful CANASA golf tournaments leads us into fall show season for another year

This summer was incredibly busy for the CANASA team and our regional councils.

In September, we held our final charity golf tournament in Quebec for this year and I am happy to say it was sold out for golfers as well as for sponsorships.

We have had record numbers for all of our tournaments across the country and CANASA was able to make some significant donations to tournament charities, all of which were selected by the local regional councils.

The generosity of participants was exemplary and something we should all be very proud of.

Training for technicians

rently running at Conestoga College has already produced graduate students. I have spoken with two companies who hired directly from the college and are pleased with the results.

I am currently working with two more colleges in Ontario who have expressed an interest and I am confident that we will be able to get these programs together for the 2024 school schedule.

We have also received interest from a school in the Maritimes. If anyone can recommend a contact from a school in your area, just pass the information on to me and I will take it from there (pstraw@canasa.org).

you visit our website and register (www.securitycanada.com). Also, be sure to check out the educational programs held in conjunction with the show by several of our vendor partners.

Are you a CANASA member?

A recent trend is companies who had left CANASA, because they were unaware of how much we do for the security industry, are now coming back.

If this is your situation, I would like to speak with you and let you know that we are all working to help our members with many aspects of their business. Just reach out via email and we can set up a phone call or a virtual meeting.

Priority No. 1 right now is to encourage more Canadian colleges to put on what are now being called “micro programs.” The program cur-

INTEGRATOR OF THE YEAR 2023: PRISM SECURITY SYSTEMS

Port Moody, B.C.-based Prism delivers a CCTV upgrade for its long-term client, the PNE in Vancouver

Part of the social fabric of the Greater Vancouver area for well over a century, the PNE is a popular venue for concerts, sporting events, seasonal pastimes and the annual Fair held every summer. Owned by the City of Vancouver, the PNE occupies an area covering 114 acres on the grounds of Hastings Park and comprises a variety of buildings, arenas and entertainment venues which serve different purposes throughout the year, depending on the PNE event schedule. More than two million people visit the PNE grounds annually.

Integration partner

The PNE recently undertook a project to upgrade its CCTV network, and after evaluating procurement submissions, turned to a trusted partner, Prism Security Systems, who they have worked with for over a decade on site security projects.

Prism is the recipient of this year’s Integrator of the Year Award, sponsored by Wesco, based on the PNE project.

effective placement to maximize safety and security.

Prism’s technical operations manager Alireza Mousavi designed the upgraded camera system for the PNE. He recommended the facility utilize technology from Hikvision.

Mousavi provided mock-ups of what the new camera network would look like so the PNE could preview camera coverage areas.

In addition, Prism was tasked with upgrading access control for a number of the PNE’s facilities. It also became necessary to update some of the PNE’s network architecture to optimize camera performance.

Mousavi redesigned a system where access control, cameras and alarm systems could run on a dedicated network. An enterprise dashboard allows PNE security operators to effectively manage and view system status. The cameras are also integrated into the PNE’s platform to optimize security operations and reduce the incidence of false alarms.

“We understand that the chosen video surveillance is mission-critical and must be robust, reliable, scalable and technologically advanced,” said Prism in a statement provided to SP&T News

INTEGRATOR OF THE YEAR

Port Moody, B.C.-based Prism has supplied security services to commercial, industrial and residential clientele across B.C. and parts of Alberta for almost 25 years. The company provides systems design and installation, including technology such as alarms, surveillance systems, access control, and network infrastructure. Prism is owned by Amin Shamji, who is also the owner of B.C.-based businesses SOS Integrated, Coast Pacific Alarms and ASC Security.

Project planning

As project planning got underway, Prism made recommendations on the types of cameras that should be deployed across the grounds and the most

“PNE is a diverse indoor and outdoor site, and we’ve implemented a unified platform to enhance operational efficiency, reduce administrative overhead and ensure professional protection across all locations.”

Installation

The PNE is a year-round entertainment facility. There is no “off-season” so Prism had to accommodate PNE activities in order to complete the upgrade project. “Before we started this job, they shared the PNE schedule with us, so we know what events they have,” explained George Robinson, acting general manager for Prism. “For example, which buildings are occupied and which buildings [we can work in].”

The project was scheduled for four months. As a long-time contractor for the PNE, Prism benefitted from being familiar with both the PNE’s grounds and its security systems, so the timeframe was well within its scope. The work began in March 2023 and was completed on time in June.

PRODUCT SUPPORT FROM THE SOURCE

Some security manufacturers will complement their technology with services available to dealer partners and end users

Because security is at the heart of their responsibilities, CSOs, facility managers, integrators/installers, and security directors pride themselves on being the “go-to” sources for this expertise. But sometimes the complexity of today’s security systems can be daunting. This is why the

professional support services offered by many security manufacturers and suppliers can be a welcome resource to these groups, and an essential part of today’s security ecosystem.

What they offer

AMAG Technology, Milestone Systems and Motorola Solutions are three examples of security vendors who provide professional services sup-

port to the integrators who install their products, along with the customers who use them.

Addy Burry, senior director, customer experience, Motorola Solutions, says the company provides a range of such services. “We offer site audits, network analysis, software optimization and upgrade support for our integrators to sell to our end customers. We offer this on our camera and video management solutions,” says Burry. “Our technicians work internally with the teams that manufacture and support our systems to unlock the full potential of our software offerings. Milestone also “provides a broad spectrum of professional services,” says Peter Lintzeris, the company’s director of sales for Canada, “including conducting customized training sessions, upgrading existing software to the latest releases, installing our VMS (video management systems) in new environments, migrating our legacy systems to our latest generation platform, and conducting comprehensive health checks.

“End users typically look to leverage our professional services capabilities when they want assurance that their VMS solution is properly configured, installed, upgraded, migrated, and otherwise validated by us as the system manufacturer. In addition, our professional services enable a proactive approach through comprehensive system health checks that thoroughly identify any potential weaknesses or issues in an installation before any system failures or unacceptable disruptions can occur. This gives end users full confidence that their security infrastructure will maintain maximum ongoing performance, stability and resiliency.”

Over at AMAG Technology, their professional services are focused on providing practical and project-specific knowledge. “If a customer is having an issue or has a big project going on, what we’re looking to do is to be a subject matter expert resource for their project team, specific to the technology that AMAG provides,” says Jeff LeBlanc, the company’s vice-president of client services.

“Basically, we are trying to assist our customers with the more complex aspects of installations.”

Where professional services fit into the big picture

While security vendors may all take slightly different approaches to addressing the market through the provision of professional services, the universal end goal is customer satisfaction and comprehensive support.

“Milestone’s professional services fit seamlessly into the larger global security ecosystem by providing genuine, comprehensive support beyond just the core VMS software itself,” Lintzeris says.

“Our services support the hardware and software technologies of the security industry, including third-party cameras, access control systems, perimeter detection devices, and more from leading manufacturers — right up to the point of any plugin interfaces from these providers. If any technical issues or complications arise between our VMS and a certified, third-party device or system, we will immediately engage directly with that specific partner to jointly diagnose and swiftly resolve the problem in a collaborative fashion, ensuring minimal disruption to the end user’s operations.”

Milestone’s expertise is founded in the fact that the company’s open platform VMS currently supports more than 13,000 different devices from more than 3,000 global technology partners. As a result of this broad installation base, “our professional services offer the unique capability to validate, troubleshoot, and optimize systems — thereby providing higher value, lower risk, and greater system support for integrators and end users alike,” says Lintzeris.

As new product sets are introduced or existing solutions are upgraded, keeping integration

partners and their customers in the loop is paramount, adds Burry.

“In a company like Motorola Solutions, we are constantly expanding our services in security and releasing new products or acquiring new solutions. The services we provide help our integrators take full advantage of our offerings and make sure our customers have direct access to the manufacturing company during upgrades, installs, or ongoing maintenance. It’s been a winning combination for customers with larger or more complex security needs that go outside of the typical video camera user,” says Burry.

AMAG’s deep roots in the global security ecosystem and mastery of its own products is something it can pass along to its customers. “We understand customer networks and we understand how our application runs and fits on those customer networks,” LeBlanc says.

This is why AMAG’s subject matter experts can help when integrators/installers and end users run into issues setting up SQL (structured query language) security connections to databases, getting their Windows servers configured and online, and obtaining full performance from the type of security components the company provides.

“We are IT subject matter experts and physical security application subject matter experts,” he says. “Our specialities include access control, video, intrusion, identity management, and visitor management. A lot of times, end users and dealers don’t have a lot of experience in terms of integrating these features into their server infrastructures and networks as well as understanding how to configure it to get a return on investment from the equipment that they just purchased. That’s where we can help.”

Coping with uniqueness

As anyone who works in this industry knows from personal experience, no two security system projects are exactly alike. This is why technology providers have to be flexible when it comes to providing professional support services — and they are.

“That’s very true; no two projects are ever alike, and we prepare for this by being very agile and by making sure we have the right people, knowledge and experience in-house,” says Lintzeris. “So, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach and relying on a dedicated professional services team, we leverage a diverse pool of more than 40 highly skilled and specialized solution engineers to cover the vast diversity of system requirements. This tailored, flexible resourcing model, with access to a broad set of cross-functional expertise, allows us to provide customized solutions and bring together the ideal combination of talent and hands-on experience to match each customer’s needs.”

Of course, experience matters, and AMAG has a lot of it within its professional services staff.

“I have a group of six professional services engineers with more than 75 years’ combined experience in the industry,” LeBlanc says. “Yes, every network operates a little bit differently, but we’re able to use past experiences with other customers to solve issues quickly with customers that we’re currently installing based on our knowledge.”

A case in point: AMAG’s experts recently assisted an extremely large customer that needed to migrate from an existing access control system to a new system that would only retain certain portions of their data — while moving this system from on-premise servers to the cloud. To make this happen, “we provided data management expertise with respect to integrating four extremely large databases into a single database,” says LeBlanc. “We also [configured] devices and set up their cloud-based

This success also gives end users the assurance that the investments they’ve made in security technology are worthwhile and justifiable.

“We typically use one word when we speak of AMAG’s professional services: Optimize,” says LeBlanc. His company’s goal is to improve the lives of the clients that they serve. “From a professional services standpoint, we are really trying to join our dealers and our customers and become part of their team when they enter a contractual agreement with us,” he says. “We are really, all the time, trying to leave customers better off than they were before they talked to us.”

This “customer comes first” attitude guides Milestone’s approach to providing professional services as well. “Our professional services play a crucial role in validating and rigorously troubleshooting third-party integrations, reflecting

security platform and made sure that it could talk to their internal security network. We had to set it up so their operations people could monitor alarms, monitor transactions, run reports, and program new locations. And our team did 100 per cent of that: There was no involvement really from the dealer or the end user other than providing us the answers to the questions that we needed.”

Adding value to the ecosystem

By providing a wide range of professional services to the security industry and its end users, technology providers can add real value. They’re doing this by helping to ensure that the security systems in use today work to their full potential. Such success keeps the dealers and integrators/installers they support in the good books of the customers who rely on them.

“Our open, partner-centric approach creates a genuinely unified security ecosystem where components from different vendors interact seamlessly, providing significantly higher performance, reliability, scalability, and ROI for end users. This way, we can remain focused objectively on constructing the optimal integrated solution for each customer utilizing their preferred best-of-breed hardware and software elements.”

It is ultimately about providing support where it’s needed, so all stakeholders can feel confident in the technology they’ve installed, adds Burry.

“We complement our integrators in bringing the best that our business has to offer with technical experts who have extensive product knowledge along with networking and deep system knowledge.”

EFFECTIVE USE OF INDUSTRIAL POE SWITCHES FOR OUTDOOR SURVEILLANCE

To ensure reliability, integrators need to review a variety of factors when installing and maintaining these systems

Outdoor IP surveillance networks can reap substantial benefits from PoE technologies such as reduced deployment costs by the transmission of both data and power over the same cable.

However, to ensure PoE’s reliability for outdoor IP surveillance networks, system integrators need to review factors including the system’s overall power consumption, network bandwidth, fault recovery and cybersecurity threats. Demand for IP surveillance applications has grown exponentially over the past decade be-

cause of the need to monitor the real-time status of people and infrastructure to enhance operational efficiency and protect critical assets.

Constructing flexible, cost-effective IP surveillance systems means integrators will often take advantage of Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology. PoE uses a single cable to transmit data and supply power, which not only increases flexibility for IP camera mounting in remote locations, but also decreases wiring costs and installation time during deployment.

Especially for outdoor systems, PoE is used to reduce installation costs and effort. It also ensures high reliability by providing an isolated power source that is centralized, making it easy

to set up a backup power supply for the system and all connected devices.

Mission-critical applications include highway traffic control and monitoring, oil field and pipeline monitoring, power generation and distribution monitoring, water and wastewater station monitoring.

In these applications, asset owners care most about the reliability and availability of their surveillance systems and require constant video streaming because IP surveillance is needed to ensure human safety and protect critical facilities, in addition to enhancing operational efficiency.

In order for security managers to clearly monitor site conditions and take the actions needed to respond to emerging events, HD PTZ cameras — which require higher power consumption and higher bandwidth communication — are often deployed to cover wide range monitor-

ing and provide uninterrupted high-resolution video. The challenge lies in ensuring that PoE switches can provide high-power output and sufficient network bandwidth while remaining highly available and reliable, even when operating in conditions with extreme temperatures, harsh environments, high environmental noise and potential cybersecurity risks.

To overcome these challenges, there are four considerations that integrators should consider when integrating industrial PoE solutions into their outdoor IP surveillance systems.

First, outdoor PTZ cameras consume more power than regular IP cameras. Consequently, high power consumption and sufficient PoE budgets need to be considered during the design phase.

Second, the PoE network must reserve sufficient bandwidth to ensure the smooth transmission of high-resolution video.

Third, to construct a highly reliable and available video system, it is important to implement failure recovery mechanisms for both network infrastructure and IP cameras. Lastly, to protect against cyberattacks or ill intent that may jeopardize human safety or critical facilities, cybersecurity should be implemented on network systems and devices.

This article discusses these considerations in greater detail to help integrators effectively utilize industrial PoE solutions to create highly reliable outdoor IP surveillance networks.

1. Providing high-power PoE to surveillance devices

During normal operations, a surveillance camera often requires around 10 to 20 W to perform basic surveillance functions. If cameras that operate around the clock need to use IR illuminators during periods of low light, this may increase the amount of power the camera requires to 30 W. Nowadays, there are a number of industrial PoE switches available that provide up to 30 W to connected devices, and do not require an additional power supply.

Industrial PoE switches that only provide 30 W per port often cannot support additional functions. One deployment that often experiences power problems like this involves PTZ surveillance cameras that patrol large outdoor areas at night. Turning on a heater or blower in harsh weather conditions can require more power for the camera than usual. For project deployments that include multiple HD PTZ cameras surveilling large areas with a lot of activity taking place, it is important to have a PoE injector or switch that can supply more than 60 W, as well as a power budget and power supply that can sufficiently support any other connected devices.

To deal with this need for power, integrators usually purchase HD PTZ cameras that include a 60 W PoE injector. However, there

are limitations to these injectors as outdoor IP surveillance applications often have many technical requirements that need to be met, such as a wide operating temperature range and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

Bundled PoE injectors often do not meet these requirements, forcing the integrator to find an alternative solution. A better option is to use an industrial-grade managed PoE switch as they are built to perform in harsh environments and can connect directly to the cameras, eliminating the need for individual injectors for each camera.

Although choosing PoE switches is a preferred solution, it used to be quite difficult because there wasn’t a standardized method to determine how much power was required. However, since the IEEE 802.3bt standard was ratified in 2018, there has been a reliable method to determine the amount of power that can be supplied to devices. Therefore, we recommend choosing an IEEE 802.3bt compliant device to avoid compatibility issues.

2. Creating a network with sufficient network bandwidth

When designing a network topology that will support multiple surveillance cameras in industrial applications, it is very important to reserve sufficient uplink bandwidth to ensure the transmission of high-quality image packets under any conditions without interruption.

The following example illustrates how to ensure that sufficient bandwidth has been deployed for an industrial network. For modern industrial surveillance networks, a high-resolution camera may require between 10 and 20 Mbps to support 1080P at 30 FPS using H.264 video compression if an industrial Ethernet switch is deployed to connect to perform their functions.

For a deployment such as this, it is advised

to reserve around 50 per cent of this bandwidth because there are certain periods when extra bandwidth will be required. For example, when PTZ cameras are surveilling large areas or if there is a lot of activity taking place in front of multiple cameras at the same time, there will often be a surge in the amount of bandwidth required and the cameras must have sufficient bandwidth available in order to continue to supply high-quality video without any stuttering or video loss.

3. Providing built-in failure recovery for a surveillance network

For outdoor IP surveillance applications, it is becoming increasingly popular for industrial PoE switches to support automatic failure recovery mechanisms that do not require a human technician to intervene should a network issue occur. The three main benefits of including built-in failure recovery are maximized system availability, convenience and lower total cost of ownership, all of which will be explored in more detail.

A situation that often happens on networks that host large numbers of IP cameras is that the cameras may freeze, stutter or experience lag, which can result in image quality being reduced to the point of being unusable.

For nearly all electronic devices that experience problems, the first stage in the troubleshooting process is to reboot the device. IP cameras are bandwidth-hungry devices that continuously process a lot of data, which often results in the cameras using up all of their temporary memory.

If an industrial PoE switch that is deployed on the network supports device failure checking, and the camera does not respond to the switch for a defined period, the industrial PoE switch can stop supplying power to the camera, causing the camera to turn off. The switch can then start supplying power again so that the camera will reboot itself, clearing all of the temporary data that is causing the camera to freeze or experience lag.

Most of the time, this simple action can allow the camera to function normally again as it now has enough storage available to perform its functions smoothly. As this type of problem frequently occurs on industrial networks, utilizing device failure checking to reboot a device, as opposed to dispatching an engineer to the site, can result in significant savings for maintenance and troubleshooting while also maximizing IP camera availability.

Network redundancy is also an important feature as this will almost eliminate the possibility of the network experiencing downtime and maximizes the availability of video streaming. To ensure smooth video communication in dynamic surveillance areas, the failure recovery time for network redundancy is recommended

to be under 500ms throughout the entire network. This is because the monitoring screen will show highly fragmented images or a still image when image packets are lost for over 500ms. Besides the inconvenience of the network going down and the possibility of losing vital surveillance footage, another problem is that downtime is expensive to fix, as an engineer may need to be deployed to the site to perform maintenance.

There are many reasons most business owners want to avoid dispatching personnel to conduct site visits. First, as the sites are often in remote locations, it is very time-consuming and expensive to dispatch personnel. In addition, surveillance cameras are often deployed in hard-to-reach places, such as on top of a tall pole.

Placing cameras in these locations allows the cameras to provide better coverage and also prevents those with malicious intent from being able to tamper with the cameras. Unfortunately, it also makes maintenance more difficult.

4. Protecting the network with defence in depth

An unsecured or compromised IP surveillance system can be targeted by cyberattacks because IP surveillance systems are frequently used to enhance human safety and protect critical fa-

cilities, such as in law enforcement and crime prevention applications, transportation safety and traffic monitoring, or industrial process oversight. Addressing cyberthreats and network vulnerabilities are critical tasks that must be completed, especially by those managing networks that handle critical infrastructure.

However, for many years, cybersecurity was not a primary concern for system operators

who thought their surveillance networks were well protected due to their isolation from other networks. Now that this is no longer the case, network operators must constantly update their security practices if they want to keep their networks secure and ensure the safety and security of on-site personnel and critical facilities.

Typically, isolated parts of an industrial network and certain devices are secure from tar-

geted threats. However, all that is required is to compromise the security of an entire network is the infiltration of one device or area of the network. As soon as someone with malicious intent has gained access to a single device on the network, it is very easy to corrupt and control other areas and devices on the network. Therefore, both device-level security and system-level security are highly recommended for industrial PoE switches used in mission-critical outdoor IP surveillance applications.

To mitigate cybersecurity risks, it is essential for industrial managed PoE switches to be equipped with device-level and system-level security features, such as strong passwords, account management, login password retry lockout, sticky MAC addresses, and MAC bypass authentication to ensure that intruders cannot easily gain remote access to devices and alter settings in a way that puts devices or the network at risk.

For example, by setting access control lists, industrial managed PoE switches can drop traffic from unauthorized IP addresses or MAC addresses. This technique prevents unauthorized devices from accessing switches, cameras or other systems. In addition, sticky MAC addresses can bind specific switch ports to specific camera MAC addresses so that they are no longer available when someone tries to replace an

original device with another device and connect to the network locally.

However, implementing a solid security policy is only the first step. It is equally important to review security settings constantly to ensure that the network remains secure for its entire deployment as outdoor surveillance networks continuously evolve. The more changes that happen on the network, the more chances there are for vulnerabilities to arise and for someone with malicious intent to gain access and corrupt the network. Network operators must pay attention to cybersecurity issues and do everything possible to prevent security

breaches, ensure the safety and security of critical facilities, and maximize system uptime.

Conclusion

When deploying multiple IP surveillance cameras on industrial networks, there are several advantages to deploying PoE solutions as opposed to using separate power and Ethernet lines. Even though there are several options available for supplying power to multiple surveillance cameras, an industrial PoE switch is recognized as the most reliable and efficient solution.

However, asset owners need to carefully consider specific features when selecting an industrial PoE switch to meet their requirements, such as a high-power PoE design, available bandwidth, fault recovery features, and finally, cybersecurity protection. Even though the starting price of deploying industrial PoE switches is relatively high, it pays dividends in the long term because the advanced features provided by industrial PoE switches can help reduce the total cost of ownership while satisfying key technical requirements to ensure that connected surveillance cameras provide excellent video quality and to maximize total system availability.

Bob Smith, National President, CANASA

Following the Canadian Security Association’s AGM in Vancouver in June, Bob Smith officially embarked on a two-year term as CANASA national president.

Smith began his security career in 1991 and joined Alliance Alarms in 1994 as a technician. He has held several positions with that organization over the years and was recently promoted to vice-president of sales and operations. The company, known today as Alliance Security Team, is based in Kingston, Ont.

Smith recently spoke with SP&T News about his industry experience and some of his plans for CANASA as its new president.

SP&T News: How long have you been involved with CANASA and how has membership and participation benefitted your security career?

Bob Smith: I began volunteering with CANASA as a member of the Telecommunications Signal Working Group in 2016. I was nominated to the Eastern Ontario Regional Council in 2017 and was the regional council president this past term. I was encouraged to put my name forward for the CANASA National Board, and was successfully elected in 2019, and have been a National Board director since.

I continue to serve or have served on the following CANASA committees: Executive; Membership; Scholarship; and By-law and Policy.

Being from a medium-sized alarm/integration company in Eastern Ontario, the major benefit of being a CANASA member is the reach our company now has across the country. The partnerships we have developed with other CANASA members is one of the keys to

our success. The contacts we have made within the industry and the resources that we can count on have increased significantly, mostly due to CANASA member events with networking opportunities.

SP&T: What is your mandate as CANASA’s new national president?

BS: I have taken the opportunity to attend more events since being named national board president, and what I hear from a lot of members is, “What is the plan to replenish the shortage of installers?” While we are having some success with college programs, I am looking for a more direct/applied approach to having these installation micro courses offered to a larger geographic area so we can meet demand nationally. Ideally, we would be able to schedule volunteer guest speakers from within our industry to encourage the students and classes with real-life success stories of our journey. This will be a high priority as soon as our committee meetings begin after our summer break. Of course, we will remain steadfast in our commitment to support and champion diversity and inclusion within our industry.

SP&T: What are some of the initiatives you or CANASA would like to undertake during your tenure?

BS: While some members do take advantage of the networking opportunities made possible by CANASA events, I would like to see a partner network developed within the membership. We may be competitors, but as we all struggle with the ongoing shortage of technicians, this is where we need to work together to help each other out the most. I would like to see a repository of

companies who are willing and able to provide subcontractor services in their specific regions. Our company has several partner companies that we meet with [and] share best practices for our different operations. As noted, this is where we have found success within these partnerships: knowing that we will find the necessary resources in various regions to meet our needs.

With more data and metrics available, we can certainly gain a better understanding of how the membership can learn to use these to strengthen their respective businesses. By providing the tools, strategies, processes, methods, etc., we can help members achieve a common goal, and that is to make your business successful.

SP&T: What is CANASA doing well today?

BS: CANASA is engaging other organizations and associations to make sure our members have access to the most current resources, events and affinity programs. An overhaul/update to our association management system has started, and we will continue to see improvements in this area. The Security Canada shows continue to reach new milestones for attendance and show offerings, with the upcoming Security Canada Central show trending towards the same outcome.

Our lean but mighty CANASA team work incredibly efficiently and are an important piece of the association’s success.

SP&T: Where are there areas for potential improvement?

BS: We can make improvements to our web page, as some of the con-

tent is outdated, and a fresh look and flow would make it a better resource for the membership to access content, and stay current with industry topics, events, and other communications as well.

Opening our membership opportunities to “outside” security channels like IT companies will have a positive impact as our industry leans more to this being a requirement every day.

SP&T: How can CANASA members (or potential new members) get involved and take advantage of the resources the association offers?

BS: We are already hearing new, fresh voices on the national board, regional councils and committees that will help guide the association. I always encourage members to engage in any capacity they feel they can commit to.

I am also a fan of feedback, good or bad. We cannot affect change if we are unaware of what that change could be or needs to be. I had a couple of conversations at the AGM in Vancouver in June that gave me some insight into some of the challenges the industry faces today. In later discussions with the same individuals following my appointment as president, I sensed a hesitancy in their tone. To address this, I emphasized the importance of valuing all feedback.

Continued participation in member events can present opportunities or contacts when you may least expect them, and I continue to find personal and professional value in attending them. I look forward to this upcoming term, and working with the national board, regional councils, committees and the CANASA team to foster our longterm prosperity.
