EDITOR’S LETTER

Raising the standard

ne of the immediate benefits of the march towards more advanced security technology is that manufacturers and installers can better articulate a value proposition for their clients.

In the case of cameras, it might mean people counting or parking management. Today’s access control and visitor management solutions offer a more personalized customer experience.

But, more importantly, innovation is also making this equipment better at what it’s supposed to do: protecting people and potentially saving lives.

I doubt the average consumer is aware that false alarm rates have been sky-high for a very long time. If you told someone on the street that in some jurisdictions that number is as high as 98 per cent, they might not even believe you.

and deliver that data to first responders in a way that is more useful and meaningful to them.

This is more than just false alarm reduction but a means to classify an emergency, utilizing alarm, video and audio data at an optimal level.

I spoke to several members of the standard’s organizing committee for more information on this and reported my findings in an article published in this issue (p. 6). The standard is expected to roll out in the U.S., but I’m hopeful that Canada will also benefit from this potentially game-changing initiative.

“Everyone has a vested interest in reducing false alarms.”

Over the years, I have attended several meetings and seminars organized by concerned security organizations about how this issue might be addressed, often in coordination with local police authorities.

The Canadian Security Association (CANASA), for example, has supported initiatives that promote verified alarm protocols and worked with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) to share best practices across the industry. Basically, everyone has a vested interest in reducing false alarms.

When I heard about The Monitoring Association’s Alarm Validation Standard, I was immediately intrigued. The idea is to take full advantage of the technical sophistication of today’s alarm and security systems

On the home front, we are spotlighting three Canadian monitoring companies that have experienced the advantages of using A.I.-based software in their own operations (see p.26). Representatives from Vancouver-based Radius Security; Laval, Que.-based Sirix; and Edmontonbased GPS Security Group discuss the advantages of using advanced software, including employee retention, better relationships with responders, and, yes, false alarm reduction.

I’m always interested in hearing about new technology that exceeds its security mandate and helps address clients’ marketing, customer service or operational needs. But when that technology ultimately provides a safer environment, it really showcases what the industry does best.

TMA developing new Alarm Verification Standard

The Monitoring Association (TMA) is in the midst of developing a new Alarm Validation Standard (TMA-AVS-01) designed to provide central stations and first responders with a greater level of certainty as to whether an alarm signal constitutes a real emergency or not.

The alarm and security industry has been confounded by a high level of false alarms for decades, with some jurisdictions reporting false alarm rates of 95 per cent or higher. TMA and the committee that is currently working on the Alarm Validation Standard hopes to address that issue and help responders make more informed decisions by better utilizing the trove of data that today’s security and alarm systems can generate.

“What we’re trying to do is restore public safety confidence in intrusion detection, burglar alarms and such security systems,” said Jay Hauhn, a committee member and former TMA CEO and executive director.

When an alarm is tripped, a signal is received by a central monitoring facility, but there is often a raft of other data that may be generated, including video and audio. When available, information is typically examined after the alarm event has taken place. The goal of the proposed validation standard is to use that data, as well as other existing information, to quickly produce a classification that could help responders understand the type and criticality of the emergency they are facing.

“This could be a paradigm shift in the way alarms are dispatched.”
— Mark McCall,Alarm Validation Standard committee

In the event of an alarm signal, “we look and see what data is available with respect to that burglar alarm activation and use that data to put a confidence classification together to determine the probability of a crime in progress,” explained Hauhn. That score would be communicated immediately to a 9-1-1 centre or emergency communications centre. “We’re trying to provide them with additional information that will help them set their response policies.”

Many modern automobiles are equipped to report relevant and timely sensor information in the event of a crash, such as the speed the vehicle was travelling, airbag status, position on the road, etc. “We’re trying to duplicate that philosophy in intrusion detection,” said Hauhn. “It goes without saying that we’re becoming a data centric world — everything we do is data driven.”

Alarm.com, for example recently introduced its Ambient Insights solution, which according to a company press release, is able to recognize activity around a property and “delivers contextual information to monitoring stations in the event of an alarm. Monitoring stations can use this real-time data to prioritize alarms and dispatch police, fire or emergency medical services to properties faster.”

“Ambient Insights for alarms, in conjunction with The Monitoring Association’s proposed Alarm Validation Standard, will provide significant opportunities to make it possible for alarm responders to make better-informed decisions,” said Alicia Burns, public safety technology alliance manager for Alarm.com, in a statement.

The standard was first proposed as a working group within the Partnership for Priority Verified Alarm Response (PPVAR), an organization that promotes the value of alarm validation and verification. It was again raised in TMA’s long-range planning meeting in 2020, and now consists of a committee of

more than 40 members, including stakeholders from across the alarm industry, such as central stations, equipment manufacturers, software developers and public safety representatives.

“There’s no question the strength of this standard is in the diversity of the people that are part of the committee. The input that we’ve had from public safety has been invaluable. Ultimately, they are the consumer of this standard... Their input has been critical and will continue to be critical as we move forward,” said Mark McCall, a committee member and director of global monitoring, Stanley Security. “When you can look public safety in the eye and say, ‘Does this help you?’ When we can have that immediate feedback from them, it’s just hard to put a value on that.”

“I’ve been involved in a lot of standards over the years but this is the most diverse group,” added Larry Folsom, vice-president, monitoring technology, ADT and a PPVAR board member.

Committee meetings began over a year ago, and the group currently meets bi-weekly. “We’re at the point now where we’re starting to put standards language down on paper and debate it, update it and edit it,” said Hauhn.

Beyond the reams of data that modern alarm systems can generate, the group is also taking into account other information that could contribute to the effectiveness of the standard. “We’re also trying to bring in as much technology that’s out there that may not be the traditional technology the central station looks at as well,” said McCall, adding that everything from weather reports to local crime statistics could also be used to bolster the classification system.

“This could be a paradigm shift in the way alarms are dispatched and how we receive that information and translate that into a response strategy,” added McCall.

The committee aims to release the draft standard for public comment in October, with the goal of having the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) publish by year end. Hauhn anticipates that the standard will be rolled out in the U.S. first, but said there is potential for adoption across North America in the future.

Active Witness launches cloud-based access control

Vancouver-based Active Witness recent ly introduced a multi-factor access con trol system called SIMA, combining facial recognition with a QR code which is sent to the user’s mobile device.

According to the company, an identity claim is made by the user, who presents their QR code to the SIMA unit’s camera. The claim is verified by matching the code to the person’s face before entry is granted.

This transaction is processed using Active Witness’ cloud-based software and the company’s app, available for iOS and Android. Initial user enrolment takes a few minutes. Optional additional features for SIMA include video recording, time and attendance, tailgate tracking and database inquiry.

Heath Driscoll, Active Witness’ vice-president of business development, said the company is in the process of building a market for its SIMA devices and is signing up dealers, starting in its home base of B.C. as well as Alberta.

“Our networks are pretty broad in Western Canada, so naturally it made the most sense for us to connect with integrators and installers in Western Canada,” he said, adding that the company plans to expand its dealer network to

provinces to the east over time, then into the U.S. for the first quarter of 2022. Dealers can earn recurring revenue for each active device they have installed.

The technology is PoE-based, utilizing power and data from the same source, and its cloud architecture lends scalability as well as ease of management to the product, said Driscoll. “That’s where the cloud has really elevated what access control companies can do. It seems to be where the industry is slowly headed, but we think it should be moving a lot faster given the capabilities, the customization, the scalability of the product.”

The primary market for SIMA at launch is small and medium-sized businesses, said Driscoll. Additional target markets include education, industrial, commercial, manufacturing, airports and sports facilities. “We’re definitely in favour of trying to make this a more accessible form of technology,” said Driscoll.

TSOC aims to simplify cabling for installers

Transglobal Systems of Canada (TSOC) aims to simplify at least one aspect of the equipment integration process via a pre-configured and pre-bundled data cabling solution called Smart-Connect.

Imran Hasan, president of Mississauga, Ont.-based TSOC, said the solution has the capacity to address many of the issues common to integration: time on site, the number of people required, and the amount of disruption that may be caused as construction trades strive to complete their part of the project. “This is just what every contractor experiences,” he said. “It just became the norm.”

Hasan described TSOC’s Smart-Connect solution as a relatively simple fix. The company is pre-bundling and pre-terminating its data cabling products in a sixport design. The Smart-Bundle can be run from a patch panel to a consolidation point and run either

above a drop-ceiling or below a raised floor. Based on this equation, installers can determine their client’s needs and install not only what they need for today but build in redundancy based on what their cabling requirements may be in the near future.

The Smart-Bundles, available

in CAT 5E, CAT 6, CAT 6A variations and beyond, are pre-tested before they leave TSOC’s facility and may be tested again on-site, providing an extra layer of assurance, said Hasan. (The installer and end user also receive a report of the test results.)

The spools on which the

Smart-Bundles are supplied are also recyclable and may be returned to TSOC, cutting down on potential waste. “It’s a matter of thinking through all the pain points,” said Hasan.

The solution was first launched in 2020 and has seen greater adoption this year, according to Hasan. It is currently available through Think Modular, a design and integration firm. Due to the pandemic, service providers had to get creative to limit the number of people they could deploy to a customer location, added Hasan. He estimated that a pre-configured solution requires only half the number of people on site and can be installed in about half the time.

Smart-Connect is currently available across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Hasan aims to make the solution available across Canada through TSOC integration partnerships. — Neil Sutton

Genetec maps out path to cloud

Montreal-based Genetec will showcase the latest version of its Security Center software, v5.10, at the Global Security Exchange (GSX) conference, held Sept. 27-29, in Orlando, Fla.

“The synergy that we’ve been seeing between security and IT has been happening for the last five to 10 years.”

Security Center — the company’s flagship security and analytics platform — is designed to help customers migrate to the cloud, and acts as a bridge between on-premise and cloud-based systems.

According to Marc-Andre Bergeron, director of sales, Canada, Genetec, that migration from on-prem to cloud is moving faster all the time.

Security Center’s cloud and hybrid capabilities are “right in line with the trends that we’re seeing in Canada,” said Bergeron in a product briefing with SP&T News in the weeks prior to GSX.

Bergeron draws parallels between the increasing convergence of physical security and IT security systems, and the move to the cloud.

“The shift was already happening. The synergy that we’ve been seeing between security and IT has been happening for the last five to 10 years,” he said.

Bergeron said he remembers a time when meetings with security and IT departments occurred completely separately, but those instances are now rare.

“The synergy is moving closer and closer every year,” he said, adding that the events of the last year-and-a-half have given this trend “a massive boost.”

“The pandemic bridged that gap and brought IT and security completely together. Unless you’re running a very, very small business right now, your IT department is an integral stakeholder of every project that has IoT devices. And it needs to, or else it becomes a cybersecurity concern.”

Skills mix

With the intertwining of physical and logical, and greater tolerance for security systems in the cloud, comes a need for different skills from the installer. “You’re looking at connecting, configuring, making sure that you understand the network, making sure you can troubleshoot a combined network, and making sure that you can actually access the cloud.

The skillset has changed — the community is adapting to that,” said Bergeron.

Even for the end user, there are some fundamental differences in how these projects must be approached and budgeted, he said. Security equipment might be an upfront capital expenditure, for example, whereas cloudbased services (surveillance as a service or access control as a service) are an ongoing, operating expense.

“A hybrid system has portions on-prem and portions in the cloud, so you’re bringing the customer closer to what they want.”

But as much as IP-based systems and cloud-based architecture have fundamentally changed the game, there are many aspects of physical security that still require a literal hands-on approach. Cameras and card readers don’t install themselves.

“When you’re talking about physical security, there’s always that component of integrated security and dependencies that are on site. That’s never going to disappear,” said Bergeron.

Likewise, if a device fails, maybe it can be tested remotely but eventually someone is probably going to have to drive out to the site and take a look in person. “[For example], a camera stops working. What are you able to do remotely? Maybe try to reboot the camera.

There’s only a small portion of things that you can actually do remotely. If something stops working, typically it’s at the device [level].”

Hybrid approach

The move to the cloud may be underway, but there are still limits as to what is achievable today, or even desirable, when it comes to that migration. For many, the preference is a hybrid approach that leverages the strengths and assurances of on-prem with the agility and convenience of the cloud.

“For us, a hybrid system has portions on-prem and portions in the cloud, so you’re bringing the customer closer to what they want,” said Bergeron, adding that smaller systems, with fewer cameras are a natural fit for the cloud, whereas very large camera installs may still experience bandwidth issues that could limit that approach. “But the shift is happening. We’ve been feeling it for a while, but now we’re actually starting to see large systems moving directly to it,” he said.

In addition to its Security Center platform, Genetec is also demonstrating several other products during GSX. Synergis is an open architecture IP-based access control solution which can help users “migrate from their obsolete access control systems and replace outdated technology that could leave them vulnerable to cyber threats,” according to company press release.

Genetec will also showcase the next generation of its AutoVu SharpV ALPR (automatic licence plate recognition) camera and its Mission Control decision management system for situational intelligence, visualization and incident management.

B.C.-based Guardteck acquires Fitch Security

Seth Fruson, CEO and founder of B.C.-based Guardteck Security, said he plans to bring the successful model that Toronto’s Fitch Security Integration built over 40 years to western Canada.

Guardteck recently announced the acquisition of Fitch Security, a company that sells, installs and services electronic security systems, and provides monitoring services, mostly in the Greater Toronto Area. Guardteck’s services include uniformed security, mobile patrol services and event management. The company operates across the west, with offices in Vancouver, Victoria, Edmonton and Calgary.

Financial details of the acquisition were not disclosed. Torontobased Final Image Inc. were exclusive advisors to the transaction.

Fruson founded Guardteck in 2005 at age 22. It was initially a means to help fund his university education but quickly became his full-time career. He expanded into the live events business in 2014 — Guardteck’s events division provides security and related services to more than 700 live music events in a typical year.

The acquisition of Fitch provides Guardteck an opportunity to expand into security systems installation services, said Fruson. “We’ve been really successful on the west coast, with all organic growth. The plan with Fitch is to honour what they’ve done and continue to build the brand,” he said. “We’re looking to bring what Fitch has to offer our marketplace out west.”

The acquisition also provides Guardteck a foothold in Ontario, and Fruson plans to offer Guardteck’s security guard services in the province.

Fitch Security’s founder and president Edward Fitchett is a fixture on the GTA/Southern Ontario security scene. A longtime member of the Canadian Security Association (CANASA) he has served as a board member for more than 10 years, and Ontario regional president for four years. He was acknowledged in 2017 by SP&T News with a Hall of Fame induction. Fitch Security is also a past-winner of SP&T’s Integrator of the Year award.

For Fitchett, the decision to take steps towards retirement was a difficult one. He said he wanted to sell to a like-minded company that would look after the interests of his employees and clients, and it took about two years to find the right fit. “I wanted my staff to be looked after in the best way possible,” he said. “I am very happy to say that this was achieved. This also ensured that our clientele would have an absolutely seamless transition.”

After more than 40 years in the industry, Fitchett said he’s looking forward to spending more time with his family.

“We’re selling systems and security but it’s [about] people,” added Fruson. “You cannot have an amazing team without great leaders. It’s a testament to Ed and what he’s done with his business.”

New education courses opening up for security professionals CANASA UPDATE

Ontario colleges are launching alarm and security training options

Iam very pleased to announce that the Alarm Technician program, offered in conjunction with Centennial College in Toronto, is taking registrants for the fall semester.

Information is available on our website (www.canasa.org).

Conestoga College in Waterloo, Ont. has also officially launched the promotion of their Alarm Systems Program. Winter registration opens Nov. 1, 2021 and Spring registration opens Feb. 7, 2022. More detailed information is available on the Conestoga College website.

in turn has trickled down to the security distributors and integrators.

A big part of this is the restrictions on the transportation industry slowing down the delivery of components and finished product.

Both of these courses are highly anticipated due to the strong demand for technicians.

“Surveys have shown that production does not drop off with people working in home offices — in some cases it increases.”

Security Canada

Security Canada trade shows will be returning in-person as follows: April 2022 (Security Canada East, Montreal), June 2022 (Security Canada West, Vancouver), October 2022 (Security Canada Central, Toronto).

We are all very excited about getting the industry back together after two years of COVID restrictions.

In the meantime our Security Canada Webinar Series is still ongoing — the schedule is available on the CANASA website. If you are interested in hosting a webinar, please contact sbasnett@canasa.org.

Product issues for the security industry

While this problem is certainly not exclusive to the security industry, the chain reaction of restrictions, reduced production capacity and supply of raw materials has trickled down to our manufacturers, which

This, combined with a labour shortage right across the country, has meant significant challenges for integrators who have lots of work in the hopper as the demand for security continues to increase.

These complications are also driving up costs, based on more demand than supply, and make it very challenging for projects that have been pre-sold and tendered.

The fourth wave of COVID-19, which is now a legitimate factor, will test all of the new restrictions and protocols that have been put in place as governments realize that they must get the economy back into full production.

Work from home or back to the office?

Finally, we have the dilemma that many companies are facing: to determine whether employees who have been working from home for almost two years should be able to return to a traditional office work space or adapt to a hybrid model.

It is quite interesting to see how some industries are anxious to get back to “business as usual” when many others have realized a massive amount of cost savings and efficiencies when employees are allowed to continue to work from home.

Surveys have shown that production does not drop off with people working in home offices — in some cases it increases with the reduced pressure of commuting, etc. I guess it all comes down to the type of business and the amount of production control that can be managed remotely.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, CANASA staff and many volunteers we wish everyone a safe final quarter to 2021.

Effective health monitoring can help integrators catch issues before they escalate

Integrators are slowly catching on to the importance of ongoing health monitoring for video surveillance systems, but most systems are still installed today with no health monitoring at all.

“AI can identify the issue and alert the user in real-time.”

Where health monitoring is in place, it is typically only used to monitor if devices are online or offline, but there is far more that can be monitored to ensure a system is working correctly. It can be intimidating to think through what health monitoring is needed for the average system, but it is less complicated than most people think. Health monitoring requirements can be summarized in three categories.

Video quality

Every video surveillance system starts with the camera. The video streaming from that camera is of critical importance, but there is a lot that can be wrong with it. Besides being offline altogether, the video could suffer from other problems that degrade image quality without triggering an offline alert. Blurry, obstructed, crooked, or otherwise corrupt images are common problems with surveillance cameras that occur while the device remains online. In the past, the only way to identify these issues was by manually viewing the video from each camera. Luckily, today AI technology can monitor for these types of issues.

If a camera goes out of focus, or a spider builds a web over the camera’s lens, AI can identify the issue and alert the user in real-time that a camera needs service.

Network quality

No matter how good the image quality from a camera is, it is of no value if it cannot make it back to the recording or viewing location. Network quality is possibly the most overlooked component of modern surveillance systems.

From the Ethernet port on the camera through to the network cables and switches back to the recorder, a lot of things can go wrong. Fortunately, this is one area we can easily monitor using well established platforms from the IT industry.

Real-time monitoring for packet loss or other data transmission issues can quickly alert support teams of a damaged cable, a lose connector, or a failing switch. It may be surprising to learn that cameras do not always go offline when network issues occur. Instead, more subtle problems might appear, such as choppy video on the recorder or pixelated images. Networks can remain functional while performing well below specification. Monitoring the network to ensure it is operating as intended should be part of any video surveillance health monitoring program.

Recording and storage

Once the video has made its way back to the recording location successfully, health

monitoring services need to ensure it is recorded and stored properly. Storage drives eventually fail completely, but typically these drives show symptoms of an impending failure long before they occur, which can be detected by specific health monitoring tools. Failure to meet expected retention times is another common issue that can occur if not monitored correctly. Something as simple as a spider web blowing in front of a camera can impact retention times, as the constant motion drives up recording activity.

Some VMSs now include features that can alert users of issues with retention times, though this important feature remains rare and usually needs to be done through a thirdparty application.

Health monitoring in the video surveillance industry is often an afterthought. Unfortunately, many surveillance systems are not used day to day and are often forgotten about altogether until something important happens, when it is too late to identify a problem.

There are thousands of data points that could be monitored to ensure a system is fully operational, but integrators should not feel overwhelmed by this. Instead, they should focus on the three categories most critical to system performance. By identifying issues early not only can integrators generate additional revenue, they can ensure a positive customer experience.

LESSONS LEARNED

Selling a company successfully

Clarifying your objectives and building a good team are just two of the elements to consider

et’s identify the factors that make for successful sales. Here I am going to refer to my own experience and also to a very useful 2021 report from the website Opnroad.io, which provides a litany of services related to the sale and purchase of companies.

“Be prepared to stay on after the deal closes to help with the transition.”

The following pieces of advice are most useful in helping to guarantee a successful sale of your company. Some of this will surprise you.

Have clarity on the objectives of a sale and what you are going to do after:

When I read this in the Opnroad.io report, and thought about my own experience, it rang true. Sellers who know exactly why they are selling and know what they are going to do after the sale seem more likely to experience a successful sale.

Set up your company beforehand to reduce risk for the buyer:

This includes making sure the company does not depend on you, the owner, 100 per cent. Establish a management team that can run the business in your absence. Secondly, make sure that no single customer accounts for more than 10 per cent of your annual revenue. Thirdly, in the alarm world, make sure you have at least 90 per cent of your monitored accounts covered by a signed monitoring contract. And, finally, be prepared to stay on after the deal closes to help with the transition. This minimizes risk to the buyer.

Plan your exit in advance:

Successful sales are most often planned in advance. This includes selling at a time when your financial results look their best and the economy is doing fairly well. It also includes selling when you have at least three years of proper financial statements to show the buyer.

Have your company valued before you sell:

This may seem obvious but you would be surprised at how many owners contact me saying they want to sell but they have not had their company valued and they don’t know what it is

worth. Do not enter a sale process without some idea of value.

Have a good team of advisors in place:

This includes your accountant, tax advisor, a lawyer who has done M&A work and a broker who has experience closing deals in your industry. In my experience, too many owners do not get good tax advice far enough in advance of a sale.

There are several different factors that could contribute to an unsuccessful sale of your business. I can think of at least four types of unsuccessful sales.

You put your company up for sale and it does not sell at all:

Unfortunately, this situation happens more than it should and there are lots of reasons why — an unrealistic selling price to begin with, not being properly prepared for the sale, not really being committed to selling or a seller being unrealistic/difficult to deal with.

You sell your company but didn’t get what you wanted:

Most sellers over-estimate what their company is worth. A certain amount of this is natural. Where this becomes frustrating is when the seller has heard things like, you can sell any number of monitored accounts and get 36 months of revenue. Or the seller does not know about the standard deductions in alarm deals for deferred revenue and fixed line costs for cellular. Or in the integration, fire or guard world, the seller does not realize they don’t get extra value

for their fixed assets used to create the company’s revenue in the first place, or they have to turn their company over with a certain amount of working capital included in the price. The best advice here is to know what your company is truly worth and how the process will unfold ahead of time.

You sell your company but the deal takes a big toll on the seller or the buyer (or both):

Having unrealistic expectations on how long a sale can take at the outset can be a problem. I tell all my clients that even the simplest small account sale can take four months. Selling fire, guard and integration businesses can take a year. Having a broker between the seller and the buyer to monitor the progress, eliminate road blocks and explain each side to the other goes a long way to helping to avoid this kind of situation.

You sell your company but the buyer does not take good care of it:

This happens more than anybody would care to admit. The most common reason I see for serious value being destroyed (besides the one where the buyer should not have bought the company in the first place) stems from lousy integration on the part of the buyer. Integrating an acquisition properly is crucial to holding onto value.

On a positive note, successful deals happen all the time. But many factors must be in place to enable this process to run smoothly.

Security as a one-stop solution provider

Customers’ changing needs means the industry has to evolve too

SP&T News is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. We’ve invited guest columnists to share their memories of the past 25 years of the Canadian security and alarm industry — how far we’ve come since 1996 and where the industry might be headed next.

Isee there being two major trends leading the way for the security industry in the coming years.

One is for the end user having more real-time access to their security-related information. Customers are already used to being able to connect with other systems via apps and web-based portals to view their content. They have this same expectation from their security systems.

“The customer wants to be empowered so they can view their information and then take the necessary actions based on that information.”

The other is continued development of integrated, multiple platforms from a single vendor. The idea of an integrated security provider makes more sense in order to avoid separate contracts and provide a holistic approach to managing the customer’s security needs.

These two concepts will continue to evolve and make inroads into our security selling space in the future.

Access to data

As customers demand more access to content, we are opening new ways for them to see and analyze their data.

This is not only tied to traditional video systems, where customers want to view live events, but has extended to include the integration of access control and intrusion platforms so they can be viewed on personal devices.

To take this a step further, the customer wants to be empowered so they can view their information and then take the necessary actions based on that information.

This is essentially making them an opera-

tor, which in some cases could take on the role of a transactional operator in a monitoring sta tion. With complete administrative control, the customer has the ability to grant people access remotely — they have the same capabilities, whether they are in that facility or working from home.

Security sys tems also have the ability to create events based on parameters that the customer has de termined are important or of significance. The customer is more in control, eliminating the need for a third party to have to intervene to make these de cisions.

Full service integrator

Companies that specialize in catering to just one line of busi ness (LOB) like video or access con trol will be left behind; the end user wants a full-service integrator to manage their needs. This also eliminates the need for pointing fin gers when one part of the solution fails.

Customers rely on uptime being as close to 100 per cent as possible. When a company can manage an entire security system for them, it eliminates the need for multiple service calls to remedy a problem on site.

The integrator that can create and manage a relationship to install and service the entire solution is at a complete advantage over companies that cannot.

“The greatness of the security industry is that it is constantly evolving and adapting to the economic environment.”

The platforms being utilized and introduced to the market are becoming more and more unified in that they can support both a video management system and an access control platform.

For one company to be able to service this makes life a whole lot easier for the client. They have fewer relationships to manage, less headend hardware to maintain and when it comes to tendering these packages, they ultimately have one relationship to manage. A trusted adviser presents economic benefits that solidify this relationship.

The greatness of the security industry is that it is constantly evolving and adapting to the economic environment. It has been said that security is recession proof but I like to think of it more as being market adaptable.

We can meet the demands of clients with new and emerging technologies. Integrators are constantly striving for increased wallet share from their clients.

There are many trends that affect this relationship, and this captures just two of them.

More in store

Hamilton, Ont.-based A.S. Security delivers on a vision of state-of-the-art surveillance for a Canadian Tire store location in Niagara Falls.

For someone who got into the security integration business almost by accident, Anthony Stayrer has built a successful company, complete with accolades and customer testimonials.

On the A.S. Security & Surveillance website, immediately under the company’s name and logo, is a link to a long list of its regional awards and accomplishments. Under a separate tab is another page filled with dozens of satisfied customer comments.

The company recently added to its accomplishments, named as the recipient of SP&T News’ Integrator of the Year 2021 award, sponsored by WESCO-Anixter. A.S. Security was selected for the award based on a surveillance project it completed for a Canadian Tire store location in Niagara Falls, Ont.

Start in security

the Hamilton, Ont., area.

Stayrer’s father owns a construction business; his mother owns a travel agency. Clients from both businesses would occasionally ask for security advice, says Stayrer, since several family members have a background in intelligence and law enforcement.

2021 SECURITY INTEGRATOR OF THE YEAR

The Stayrer family emigrated from Eastern Europe in 1993 and settled in

“We said, ‘Alright, let’s give this a shot,’” says Stayrer, whose first unofficial client, prior to his company’s incorporation in 2008, was a Catholic church in Hamilton.

Based on that experience, Stayrer says the next logical step was to commit to security full-time. Other religious institutions followed over the next few months: an Islamic mosque and a Hindu temple, also in Hamilton.

The company used the proceeds from those projects to buy more equipment and reinvest in the business.

Several other family members are also part of the A.S. Security business, including Stayrer’s father, brother, uncles and cousins.

Stayrer says he saw a gap in the market for a security provider in the Hamilton region and pressed his advantage, expanding his service area into the Niagara and Halton regions, then Burlington.

The company joined local chambers of commerce, as well as other regional organizations to spread the word and build a client base. Stayrer also created a 14page book as a promotional tool.

“Instead of dropping off a flyer, we would drop off a book — to tell a story about our family, our history, our awards... You were able to get an inside view of our family, our business but also our vision,” says Stayrer.

The business also poured money into local advertising, marketing itself on billboards, buses and bus stops.

As the company grew, it started making connections with large retailers. When Stayrer heard that a new Canadian Tire location was opening in the Niagara region, he knew he wanted to be a part of it. “We immediately felt it was a perfect match,” he says.

We are the installers

Stayrer says the company was at a disadvantage, since A.S. Security wasn’t a pre-approved vendor for Canadian Tire, but he was able to connect with location’s dealer/ owner Paul Medeiros for a meeting. (Canadian Tire operates on a franchise model, with a network of more than 510 dealers across the country.)

Stayrer says A.S. Security

made a positive impact, but not with a slick marketing presentation. Stayrer and his team arrived directly from another install location.

“We didn’t come dressed in suits like professionals with shiny shoes — we are the installers,” he says.

Stayrer says they made an impression with their approach, industry knowledge and candor.

Medeiros had also done his homework. An award-winning Canadian Tire dealer with decades of experience, he is well-versed in store operations as well as the security systems required for retail. He also sits on a Canadian Tire committee responsible for overseeing some of their new builds.

Two smaller Canadian Tire locations in Niagara Falls were closed to make way for a massive new location with a 180,000 sq.ft. footprint — the largest Canadian Tire store in the province.

Medeiros consulted with Canadian Tire’s security department before embarking on the project.

“A.S. Security came out as one of the top companies for providing great customer service,” says Medeiros.

“Tony knew the industry inside and out. He’s well versed on all the cameras and what’s out there.”

Given the green light, Stayrer

and company got to work. Stayrer first met with Medeiros in September 2019. Several months passed before A.S. Security and other trades and service providers were able to access the building while the previous tenant moved out.

A.S. Security started the job on Dec. 2 and had to be finished by the end of February.

But Stayrer’s team only had access at certain times, based on a timetable of different tradespeople on site. Stayrer estimates there were as many as 65 people working at the location at its busiest, with 80 booms and scissor lifts in use across the property.

For a comprehensive surveillance system, Stayrer recommended to Medeiros they deploy Axis Communications equipment

throughout the store.

“We’ve seen Axis cameras in the most secure locations on the planet,” explains Stayrer. A.S. Security contacted Axis headquarters in Sweden via their Mississauga, Ont., office to ensure that Canadian Tire had the most up-to-date surveillance equipment the company has available.

“I sat down with Tony and we went over the entire floorplan,” says Medeiros.

“He listened to how I like to operate my business and recommended an optimal camera solution and surveillance system for my store.”

A.S. Security installed more than 100 cameras (indoor and outdoor with a mix of dome, bullet, 360-degree and 180-degree cam-

eras), and two 64-channel servers. A.S. Security also installed more than 100 data lines for the security equipment, as well as the store’s electronics and computers. Approximately 200 data lines were pre-wired for any future expansion.

A December install brought with it the typical challenges of a Canadian winter, but this didn’t faze the A.S. Security crew.

A.S. Security had 16 team members on site during the install, divided into teams of four with Stayrer serving as the project manager. The teams held three on-site meetings a day to discuss any issues or problems and how to address them.

Stayrer says he was constantly on the phone with distributors and suppliers, ordering more equipment. The tight timelines also meant that the company had to bring more resources to the project.

Stayrer hired additional installers and bought two new trucks in the space of a few days to make sure they stayed on schedule.

“Our staff are troopers — they go above and beyond.”
—Anthony Stayrer,A.S. Security

“We’ll do whatever it takes to complete a job, so that’s exactly what we did,” says Stayrer.

“We don’t like normal. We don’t like average. We find it very boring. We did everything we could to complete this project and also to bring in the best possible equipment. It’s not just getting a catalogue and ordering Axis cameras.”

Future proof

In addition to a modern surveillance system, Medeiros says he also benefits from some of the retail-specific functionality provided by the new Axis technology. The system can track customer dwell time — how long a customer lingers in a specific location — which will trigger notifications to Canadian Tire team members that extra assistance may be required. It will also count the number of custom-

ers in the store at any given time, which has been useful for managing occupancy limits during the pandemic.

Medeiros says that all the technology the location uses, from electronic shelf labels to e-commerce, is the latest and greatest. The store has become a retail showcase, he says, drawing attention from a variety of interested visitors, including other Canadian Tire owners.

“I’m proud of what we accomplished,” he says. “We built a state of the art store, not just for today but for tomorrow.”

The fact that the project was finished on-time and to the customer’s satisfaction is a testament to the diligence of A.S. Security’s staff, says Stayrer.

“Without my staff, I would not be where I am today, the business

would not be where it is today. Our staff are troopers — they go above and beyond.”

The Canadian Tire project was finished before the pandemic had a chance to affect installs, but Stayrer says it’s basically been business as usual for A.S. Security for the last 18 months.

Unlike some companies, A.S. Security has actually grown during this time with no shortage of new projects on the horizon. The bigger the job, the better, according to Stayrer, who says he’s always willing to stretch to meet a client’s goals.

The company continues its relationship with Canadian Tire with monthly service visits, evaluating each piece of security hardware and software, and providing a report of equipment that requires updating or replacement. Anything found faulty is replaced on the spot.

“I think that’s what sets Tony apart,” says Medeiros. “His adaptability, his ability to communicate with the customer, and the trust.”

A team of 16 A.S. Security installers worked on site to complete the project.

A.I. IN THE CENTRAL STATION

False alarm reduction, employee retention and improved relationships with police responders are just some of the positive outcomes of advanced software

Artificial intelligence-based technology is helping some of Canada’s leading central monitoring stations improve customer service and handle more business without adding employees. And more AI capabilities are on the horizon.

We recently asked three leading station representatives about the technologies in use, the benefits, and expected breakthroughs over the next few years.

The executives included:

• Aleksei Bulavko, research, development and production manager, Radius Security. Radius provides monitoring services across Canada and the Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin, Tex., areas from its Vancouver-based command centre.

• Daniel Cyr, chief executive officer of Sirix, a Laval, Que.-based provider of video monitoring, perimeter control and remote control of specialized equipment, for authorized integrators in Canada and the U.S.

• Fredy Ramsoondar, private investigator for

Edmonton-based GPS Security Group, providing western Canada customers with video monitoring, human guards, security audits and planning and emergency services.

False alarm reduction

Camera-based analytics, introduced about 20 years ago, offered motion-based alerts that highlighted potential criminal activity at a monitored site. However, there was a problem — up to 98 per cent of alarms received were caused by non-critical activities such as wind-blown

foliage or stray animals. Later, server-based analytics enabled the quick location of events after they occurred.

New artificial intelligence-based software eliminates more than 90 per cent of false alarms by focusing on real-time images of humans and vehicles captured by surveillance cameras. All three executives agreed this is a game-changer for the remote video monitoring industry.

Cyr said Sirix previously declined to accept customers if the analytics they were using weren’t advanced enough. That’s no longer a problem with the advanced AI-based software Sirix now uses.

“Today, the software enables us to monitor virtually any site while receiving fewer false alarms,” he said. “Now we focus on the services we offer and worry less about the equipment we’re monitoring. This helps us grow our business.”

GPS’ Ramsoondar called the new software platforms “essential” to his business as they keep station operators focused on successfully handling true alarms.

“False alarms significantly reduce the time our staff spend verifying the validity of each alert,” he said. “We monitor more than 1,000 cameras each night and now we’re confident we

won’t miss the events that matter to our clients.”

Here’s a brief look at how false alarm reduction software is created and works once deployed.

Neural networks within the AI-based software “learn” in a similar way as a human brain. In this tedious and time-consuming deep-learn-

ing model, the software is shown millions of sample images of people. Over time, and with human corrections, the software becomes more accurate, recognizing people wearing hats, glasses and varied clothing. Vehicles are added in a similar process.

In the field, alarm-generated video is trans-

mitted to cloud-based software, which eliminates non-actionable activity and sends true alarms to a monitoring station in a process that takes about a second. The software continues increasing its accuracy with use. Also, intelligent video analytics don’t get tired or lose focus, maintaining their accuracy throughout the day.

Radius Security’s Bulavko said he appreciates cloud-based software as it requires no extra devices at the Radius station or on a customer’s property and it’s easy to add cameras as the business grows.

Employee retention

The three executives agreed that employee burnout from handling false alarms leads to retention issues. Cyr said Sirix spends three months training new operators to perform the job the way he wants it done. Altogether, the training costs equal a year’s salary for an operator.

“I can’t afford a high turnover rate — that’s the No. 1 thing I worry about,” he said. “Any business is only as good as its employees, so we try to make our operators’ jobs as easy as possible. The improvements we make for our employees are important.”

He gave an example of a monitored car dealership that attached small flags to each vehicle to draw customer attention. When the wind blew, the Sirix station would get as many as 200 alarms a night, driving operators “crazy.” False alarm reduction software eliminated the alerts.

Ramsoondar said GPS provides a financial incentive for each operator successfully resolving an alarm. He said there was never any intention to replace operators with software. Now, any redundant GPS operators work in other areas of the company to help build the business.

Law enforcement

Law enforcement organizations often were burned by false alarms, dispatching officers to a site only to find nothing happening. Today,

video monitoring stations work hard to develop and maintain a strong relationship with local law enforcement.

Bulavko said when his operators call law enforcement to dispatch officers, they also can provide a four-digit code enabling officers to use in-vehicle laptops or mobile phones to view an online site map and live video events from the site. Officers learn how many people are involved and if anyone is openly carrying a gun or another weapon.

Coming soon?

The executives offered opinions on what they see as the next monitoring centre uses of AIbased software. Ramsoondar predicts more filtering capabilities. For example, he said station operators would know a person was a member of a client’s team by identifying a distinctive yellow jacket they wore.

“We’re also hoping for predictive or behavioral capabilities that might catch a criminal event before it happens,” he said. “Software could highlight someone repeatedly walking back and forth or loitering in an area as someone casing a facility.”

Bulavko sees big data as a growing and valuable asset for predicting events.

“Computers are much better and faster at detecting patterns than humans,” he said. “Looking at the data gathered from entire sites, or a single camera over the years, we’ll be able to predict which days and times are most likely to have more alarms and schedule our staff accordingly. Rather than wait for a surprise, we’ll prepare in advance.”

Also, Bulavko said advanced metrics, including the number and type of alarms coming into a station and an operator’s response time, helps managers make many operational decisions. Often, customers want a dashboard enabling them to follow activities.

Cybersecurity is another potential service

stations may offer. Ramsoondar said GPS is completing compliance with ISO-27001, an international standard for security management systems used to maintain security for assets such as intellectual property and financial and employee data.

“Once we’ve implemented the program, we’ll assist our clients with their IT systems with an eye on how they’ve structured cybersecurity,” he said. “We’ll provide IT audits and recommendations on ways to enhance security.”

Bulavko said he expects greater acceptance of remote guarding, which offers virtual camera-based patrols to monitor intrusion, fire and other activities. The service also includes two-way audio talk downs and recorded messages to engage with intruders before calling law enforcement.

Integrators can generate recurring revenue selling service contracts from Sirix. Cyr said the company monitors its online connections to end users’ devices, checking for camera and server failure and blocked and misaligned camera views.

“Every day, we remotely check on camera and server health and deliver a report to our integrator customers, helping keep them ahead of problems,” Cyr said. “All the integrators need to do is add their logo and mark up the fee providing a source of RMR.”

AI-based technology is changing how remote video monitoring centres function, making operators more efficient and saving time and resources in other business areas.

Technology advances promise even more uses soon. However, it may be years before monitoring centres fully realize the promises of AI technology.

Brian Baker is chief revenue officer for U.K.-based Calipsa (www.calipsa.io), a provider of deep learningpowered analytics for false alarm reduction. GPS Security Group, Radius Security and Sirix use Calipsa’s FAR technology platform.

Radius Security’s Vancouver command centre provides monitoring services across Canada as well as Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin, Tex.

Anti-passback feature

ProdataKey

ProdataKey has added Anti-Passback to the programmable features of its pdk io cloud access control platform. Anti-Passback requires individuals who have scanned through an entry reader to scan out through a corresponding exit reader before their credentials can be used to re-enter the premises. Anti-Passback rules are defined through the pdk.io software. They may be applied to locations where users pass through designated entrances and exits, like parking garages, and secure areas such as data centres and laboratories that regulate both entry and exit. The feature may also be applied at turnstiles. www.prodatakey.com
