e’ve all got a lot to think about as fall begins.
It’s traditionally a time when vacations wind down, kids go back to school, and we find that extra gear to propel ourselves towards the challenges that the last quarter of the year will bring. Of course, back to school, both for K-12 and university students, brings challenges no one could have foreseen last September.
The image of our children wearing face masks and staying six feet away from their classmates to prevent the spread of a virus seems more suited to a movie-of-the-week than the reality we will undoubtedly share for months to come. We explore this scenario in this issue of SP&T and take a closer look at some of the measures schools are putting in place to mitigate COVID-19 spread.
One thought that has really been on my mind lately is, how would we have coped with this pandemic 10 years ago? Or 20 years ago? What if this had happened in the 1990s, when the Internet was still in its infancy? If there’s something we can be grateful for, it’s that the infrastructure we have in place today has allowed us to communicate with each other almost effortlessly.
I’ve heard mixed reactions to the current workfrom-home situation many of us are facing, from those who love its flexibility and lack of commute, to others who lament the loss of office culture, coffee meetings and face-to-face communication. But I
don’t know anyone who hasn’t in some way benefited from video communication as means to basically keep going.
Our new regular video series, Security Coffee Break, utilizes the split-screen format we’ve all become so familiar with. We’re able to check in with industry figures like Chris Currie, president of Damar Security, and Jacquelyn Davies, VP of sales at Bosch Canada, and share their observations with our audience. (Check our website for more videos — we’re adding them bi-weekly.)
Edmonton-based Fibertel Communications was recently acknowledged as Integrator of the Year, sponsored by Anixter Canada, for a project that relied on detailed and almost constant coordination between project partners (read our cover story for more details). The vast majority of this project was completed before the pandemic set in, but there were still details to manage in March and more recent months. Collaboration moved online and teams had to coordinate by video conference rather than face-to-face. But that option is at least there, as it is for most of us.
It can be difficult to keep morale high when circumstances are so challenging, but I think we can all appreciate the fact that communication barriers are as low as they’ve ever been.

After more than 20 years with children’s charity Mission 500, founder George Fletcher says he has made the difficult decision to step away from its day-to-day operations and hand over the reins.
“It’s gathering critical mass. It’s really exciting where it can go from here.”
— George Fletcher, Mission 500
Mission 500 was established in 1998 by Fletcher, a Canadian who resides in the U.S., as a catalyst for his company to help 500 underprivileged children in Latin America through a donation program. In 2007, it re-emerged as a security industry-wide venture, helping hundreds more children and families, first in partnership with World Vision and then with other groups that support children and youth development globally.
Mission 500 came into Fletcher’s life as an epiphany. A tireless entrepreneur, Fletcher says he was giving so much of himself to his business, he came to a recognition that there had to be other meaningful ways to direct his energy.
“That was how Mission 500 was born. The realization of, ‘What are your priorities in life?’ Ever since then, I never approached work in the same way again. My whole mindset in terms of work-life balance has changed. Giving of my time or money became a priority — it had to be central to whatever I did. I’ve tried to stay true to that.”
Fletcher’s hands-on approach to Mission 500 has taken him around the world. Last year, he was involved in 11 events in five different countries.
The organization has expanded on its original mandate to include fund-raising efforts such as 5K runs at ISC West; baseball, golf and hockey tournaments; security industry functions; and more recently, virtual events. Mission 500 has also led projects that help communities coping with the tragic consequences of natural disasters like hurricanes.
Fletcher estimates that more than 150 organizations and over 2,000 volunteers have engaged with Mission 500 to support its efforts to make the world a better place for children. Its partners include associations like the Security Industry Association, media outlets and dozens of companies, including Altronix, Axis Communications, HID Global and Napco,

that support charitable endeavors through fund-raising and volunteerism.
In Canada, Mission 500’s Canadian committee has actively grown awareness of the charity through promotion at several Canadian Security Association events. SP&T News and Canadian Security are both supporters of Mission 500, organizing and hosting its annual security industry hockey tournaments in Toronto for the last five years. Since its inception, the Mission 500 Hockey Classic has raised money for such organizations as World Vision, Toronto Crime Stoppers and Peel Crime Stoppers.

“George was instrumental in getting me started with Mission 500 several years back,” says Paul Grossinger, Mission 500’s Canadian chair, Hockey Classic tournament organizer and group publisher of SP&T News. “George is an inspiration to all of us in the security industry. His leadership and compassion has made many of us stop and think of the importance of helping children in need.”
Fletcher says it took him two years to arrive at the difficult decision to step back from Mission 500 and pursue some of his other life
goals. But the support the organization has garnered over the years will assure its future and continued growth, he says. Mission 500’s advisory and executive boards now include more than 25 security industry professionals.
“It’s gathering critical mass. It’s really exciting where it can go from here. There’s great leadership; there’s a great, committed volunteer group,” says Fletcher.
Ken Gould, Mission 500’s chairman of the board since 2019, says Fletcher’s enthusiasm for the organization is inspirational. “His passion for it was just amazing. George was the sounding board for me.”
“George really was the driver and inspiration behind Mission 500 and is responsible for this whole thing coming together,” adds Vince Galdi, CEO of LRG Marketing Communications and Mission 500 board member. “He did a fantastic job getting it off the ground and recruiting people who are now tasked with continuing the good work and building on it further and that’s what we plan to do…. Of course, we’re sorry to see George go, but we wish him the best.”
Fletcher may be moving away from Mission 500, but some aspects will remain close.
“It will always be something I’ll be attuned to,” he says. “I’ll hop on a plane to Puerto Rico and fix roofs… I’ll go and pack backpacks at a local school to donate to school kids. If I’m available, I’ll step up. That’s my favourite part of the whole thing. It’s not sitting in a board room deciding strategy. That’s fun, but the best part is in trenches, interacting with the kids and the families.”

Patriot One Technologies’ PATSCAN Platform will be deployed in the City of Cincinnati, Ohio. Integration partner Ginter Electrical Contractors is responsible for the deployment.
“Working with Ginter Electrical and the City of Cincinnati to deploy our PATSCAN Platform in select government venues is a great opportunity to demonstrate how private industry and government can work together to ensure the public’s safety,” said Martin Cronin, Patriot One CEO, in a statement. Five PATSCAN Multi-Sensor Covert Threat Detection Platforms were provided to Ginter Electrical. Deployment locations were not disclosed.
“We pride ourselves on being a forward thinking, innovative Midwest city, always looking for ways to enrich our residents’ and visitors’ lives, while keeping them safe,” said interim city manager Paula Boggs Muething.

Winnipeg church streams services during pandemic
Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Winnipeg needed a solution to help livestream sermons and services. The church turned to MuxLab to help them set up a system that would provide multiple camera angles for streaming on various platforms including YouTube, Facebook Live and the church’s own website.
Tony Braccio and Scott Morrison from On-Q Pro Media, the company that installed the system, said in a statement, “They called us because of the COVID-19 pandemic and wanted to reach out to anyone who wanted to continue seeing our church services.”
The streaming project utilized MuxLab’s HDMI over IP H.264/H.265 PoE Extenders (500762-TX, 500762RX) paired with the ProDigital Network Controller (500812).

WWide Dynamic Range is generally considered a valuable feature with a few notable exceptions
ide dynamic range (WDR), is a feature that can significantly impact the image quality of a camera.
WDR is not new; in fact, it’s a term invented by the video surveillance industry to describe cameras with a high dynamic range. There are several different methods for increasing the dynamic range of a camera but to understand how they work, and what is considered true WDR, you first need to understand what dynamic range is.
“One of the biggest challenges with WDR is that the feature has no standards or regulation.”
The dynamic range of a camera indicates how well the device can display both very dark and very bright areas of a scene at the same time. Most people have experienced the effects of a poor dynamic range while using personal cameras to take photos. The best example can be seen when taking a photo of someone from inside a building with a bright window behind them. The image will typically come out with the person visible but the area outside the window completely white or otherwise washed out. This is because the light levels inside the building are so dramatically different to the light levels outside the window that the camera can only balance to one or the other.
In personal imaging or photography cases, this limit in range is often desirable. It can create an appearance of realism and adds depth to the image, but when used in video surveillance it can be a problem. Using the same example above, there is a risk the camera instead balances on the light level outside of the window, in turn, eliminating identifiable features of the person who would then appear like a silhouette in front of the window. This is where WDR allows surveillance cameras to capture both the background details outside the window as well as the identifying features of the person in front of it.
There are many methods for increasing the dynamic range of an image, but only one is broadly accepted as true WDR. This method

involves the camera capturing multiple images at the same time or milliseconds apart and then combining them together to create a single WDR image.
For example, if a WDR camera was to capture an image of the person in front of the window, it would take three images. The first would balance on the background outside the window, the second would balance on the person in the foreground, and the third would capture an image somewhere between the two. The camera would then combine the most detailed areas of all three images to create a single WDR image. WDR is generally a valuable feature on almost any camera, except when using machine vision AI or video analytics. One benefit of a low dynamic range is that it creates higher contrast images with clear definition between objects which makes it easy for a computer to distinguish between them. WDR flattens the image by reducing the highlights and shadows, in turn creating an image with very little contrast (areas of pure white or black) that is difficult for machine vision AI to analyze. For this reason, it is
usually advisable when using video analytics to disable the WDR feature in the camera.
Outside of its impact on AI, one of the biggest challenges with WDR is that the feature has no standards or regulation around it, leaving manufacturers to self-declare whether a camera supports the feature or not. Since there are other ways to increase the appearance of a cameras dynamic range, this can be very confusing for the buyers.
For the right applications, WDR can be a valuable tool for capturing as much detail as possible, but WDR has created a lot of confusion for buyers. This is compounded by its negative impact on some machine vision AI along with some manufacturers falsely claiming their cameras support the feature. Perhaps someday WDR will be regulated and certified. Otherwise, for now, the only way to determine a camera’s WDR capabilities is also the most effective way: test it in real life.

The pandemic has the economy in a tailspin, so know what you might be getting yourself into
onventional wisdom might tell us that with COVID-19 still very much hanging around and the economy shattered by the shutdown, now might not be a good time to sell your security business.
If I were an owner of a profitable security business that wanted to sell, I would certainly be concerned. But, amazingly enough, there are several forces at work that suggest that now could actually be a good time to sell your business.
“Alarm monitoring RMR does not appear to have been too affected by the virus.”
But first we should review what I think are some basic requirements that every seller should have in place before even considering the effect of the virus. First, it has to be the right time for you personally to sell. You need to be emotionally ready. From my experience, most owners know when it is time.
Secondly, when selling any business, you should have at least two years (three would be even better) of good financial results behind you and a decent forecast for the next 12 months. This is paramount. If the virus has put a dent in your immediate results, then it is up to you to show buyers that whatever revenue you may have lost will be picked in future months and that your business has not been permanently damaged.
In earlier articles, I talked about the new variable which is being factored into all new valuations using a calculation of normalized EBITDA. They call this new variable EBITDAC where the C is for the effect of COVID-19.
Third, you need to have a realistic idea of what your business is worth. That probably means getting your business valued fairly close to when you put it on the market.
If all three of these issues are a go, then I think you are in a position to consider a sale, despite COVID-19. Next, you should be able to explain clearly the effect of the COVID-19 shut down on your business. It may be nothing, a little or a lot. If it has seriously damaged your financial

results for the current year, then perhaps it is better to wait for a year or so until you have a good year’s results under your belt.
But if you own an alarm company where your attrition has not been affected too much or a guard company where your business actually improved or at least held its own, you can proceed towards a sale without fear of being devalued by the times we are in. I am currently selling several alarm companies.
If you have reached this point and everything still looks good, there are some forces working in your favour if you want to sell your business.
Firstly, because the virus has scared some sellers off, there may not be very many other businesses in your market for sale. That helps you. To get a feel for what’s going on in the market, I suggest you talk to some other industry players or even a broker who works in your field.
Secondly, and I have mentioned this in earlier articles, some companies are buying now because their “organic” growth has dried up. They need to replace new organic accounts with acquisition accounts.
Many alarm companies still can’t get into homes to install new systems. Regarding commercial security installations, many companies have been affected badly by the virus and are simply not spending money upgrading their security systems.
Thirdly, private equity, which is proving to be a much bigger factor in security industry deals these days, has lots of “dry powder” (un-deployed capital) looking to be invested. They don’t appear to be slowing up on their pursuit of deals. They, along with anyone else who is doing deals, are finding ways to work around the virus.
As for the regular bigger buyers in the alarm market, they seem to be carrying on trying to do deals almost as if there had been no virus shutdown. This is partly due to the fact that alarm monitoring RMR does not appear to have been too affected by the virus. In fact, it has been surprising to me how many buyers I have talked to in the various segments of the security industry that are considering these times as “business as normal.”
Then there are the opportunistic buyers. So far I have seen two kinds: those that are attempting to take advantage of the times to get some “deals” on businesses for sale and those that are buying because they want to get the jump on their competition.
So put all this together and my point is that if you can get past the three basic hurdles, the M&A market for security companies appears to be almost as active as ever.

Integrator of the Year 2020 Fibertel Communications collaborates with project partners, owners and tenants to deliver a complex security infrastructure for the newly renovated HSBC Bank Place building
By Neil Sutton
Almost any successful security integration project could rightly be called the solution to a puzzle. The task before Fibertel was taking pieces from different puzzles and placing them together such that they appeared to all come from the same box and form the same picture.
Edmonton-based Fibertel Communications Canada is SP&T News’ Integrator of the Year 2020, an annual award sponsored by Anixter Canada. Fibertel was named for the award by SP&T News’ editorial advisory board based on a nomination that detailed an integration project for client the Alberta Investment Management Corp. (AIMCo), specifically, HSBC Bank Place in downtown Edmonton.
The 18-storey HSBC building, owned by AIMCo and run by property management firm Epic Investment Services, was stripped down to its concrete bones and rebuilt a-new as a smart building. Multiple contractors, including general contractor PCL Construction, Western Electrical, engineering consultant Smith + Andersen, and HVAC specialist Automat-
ic Controls, came on to handle the project. Fibertel was brought on board by Western Electrical to fulfill the security component.
Fibertel was responsible for installing a variety of systems including an access control system from Gallagher, 120 Bluetooth-enabled HID Global card readers, 120 Hanwha Techwin video surveillance cameras, a video management system from Pelco, an intercom and mass notification system from Commend and a ThyssenKrupp Destination Dispatch elevator system. The install also included network and structured cabling, and more than 200 intrusion devices and 18 intrusion panels. The solution was spread across 18 communication rooms, one per floor; the building-wide intercom system was also integrated with the elevator dispatch system.
One of the major challenges ahead of Fibertel was integrating the entire security system through a Building Management System (BMS) supplied by Schneider and installed by Automatic Controls. Coaxing these systems into talking to one another is where Fibertel truly earned its stripes, according to special project manager Tyson McCann.
“There’s nothing typical about this project,” he says. “When you start
to get into what we did with the building automation, the BMS… it’s truly a unified system. Not only do you have the typical things that a building automation system is managing, like the lighting and the heating, etc., but now you’ve folded in the access control, the cameras, the scheduling of the doors — who has access to what floors at what times. It’s all being done through the BMS. In my experience, I don’t know of any other building that has something of this magnitude in place.”
“Typically the BMS, and various other components — the ThyssenKrupp, the access control, the video surveillance — they work best typically on their own,” adds lead project manager Eddison Sambury. “So we had to take various manufacturers that may not necessarily be aligned and have the various components mesh. We had to be that contractor, that expert, to figure out solutions to make those manufacturers align.”
“In my experience, I don’t know of any other building that has something of this magnitude in place.”
—Tyson McCann, Fibertel
Sambury, who coined the aforementioned puzzle pieces from different boxes analogy, says, “We had to make different pieces … fit and look as one.”
For McCann, it became an exercise in machine linguistics — like trying to get a fax machine to talk to a computer via a scanner, he says. “There’s very many companies that can install access control or install cameras. The real work begins when you try to have these different software platforms communicate with each other when they don’t natively do it already and having it work seamlessly.”
The HSBC building’s owner, AIMCo, is also its largest single tenant, occupying floors nine through 16 with an option to also move in to the eighth, should their expansion require it. Epic, as the property management company, is responsible for the day-to-day operations

on site. Security had to be satisfied to the wishes of both companies, which essentially resulted in two end users, two sets of requirements and two timelines.
“We had to coordinate with AIMCo, but at the same time, we had the property management team, which is Epic, which took ownership of the rest of the building — the parkade, the main floor and various other tenant floors up to the eighth,” explains Sambury. “We had to ensure that their requirements were met, so that when the tenants moved in, there aren’t any difficulties for the tenants to mesh into the system that we installed.”
Serving two clients created some pressure, notes McCann, especially when one tenant needed the elevators to be available by a particular date. That deadline required a complex integration linking the access control system to the elevator system. “The way the access control system wanted to communicate to the elevator control system, they weren’t even able to talk to the same communication protocol, so we needed
“They were willing to work with us and spend so much time making sure that everything was just the way it needed to be.”
— Lisette Goyette,AIMCo
to put translation in there, which ended up resulting in a third-party system to have that translation occur between the two platforms,” he says.
But tight timelines are not unusual for projects of this scope, he adds. “Ultimately the client has their requirements, and they’re shifting requirements. That can occur. It’s our job to make sure we hit those targets that are set for us.”
The complexity of the integration, combined with the flexibility required to meet multiple customer demands meant a high degree of collaboration formed between all of the contractors engaged with the project, says Sambury.
“To make things work, and make them work according to the customer’s requests, we had to spend a lot of time talking with the engineer, talking with Automatic Controls, ThyssenKrupp, even down to the door hardware contractor,” he says. “There were a lot of components that, on a typical project, we may not be as involved
as we were, but with this HSBC job, we were in and amongst every discussion that was happening on that site.”
The bulk of the project was completed by November 2019 — at which point tenants were able to move into the building on an ongoing basis. An unforeseen complication, and one that affected construction projects and office buildings globally, was the pandemic. By the time COVID-19 began to disrupt Canadian organizations, Fibertel was fortunate to be at the tail end of the HSBC project, but there were still a few issues to contend with.
“One of the larger things I’ve seen happen since COVID is there’s been some sporadic challenges with the supply chain,” says McCann. “We would have unknown lead times, but it wouldn’t be across the board. Sometimes things are showing up right on time and other times there’s a random shortage of different materials.
“It didn’t really affect this project too much, because at this point, we already had the materials in place. It was just making sure that we have the right people, that we are able to maintain contact and continue to talk to them and collaborate with them to make sure that we’re finishing it off properly.”
Sambury says the unusual situation created by COVID-19 required some shifts be rescheduled, so workers on-site could operate in isolation or socially distanced from one another. Likewise, collaboration with project partners had to move online and the teams embraced Zoom calls rather than face-to-face meetings to continue to communicate.
The building system, as developed and installed, also allows technicians to work on systems remotely, enabling quick diagnoses and faster troubleshooting.
“I always recommend providing us the ability to remote in, because that’s your first line of defence,” says McCann. “When anything goes wrong on a system, the
first thing I want to see happen is have an analyst go in and see what they can see. Because very often, that’s going to help you get to the root cause of what’s going wrong on site.”
Both major stakeholders in this endeavor came away satisfied with the work as well as the dedication the Fibertel team demonstrated.
“They were willing to work with us and spend so much time making sure that everything was just the way it needed to be so that it worked with our IT group and facilities group and with the building group,” says Lisette Goyette, facilities coordinator, AIMCo, and one of the building’s regular tenants. “There were just a lot of moving pieces. In my opinion, they stick-handled it really well.”
“They were excellent communicators,” adds Kevin Humphrys, general manager, Epic. “The team that they had here on the ground knew how to manage the project, but what was very useful to the property management group was their ability to communicate in layman’s terms what was happening … so we can communicate that to our stakeholders.”
Goyette says that Fibertel senior security technician Andrew Mathiesen was particularly attentive to AIMCo’s needs. “We would not have gotten this job done without his expertise.”
She recalls a recent situation when she had an issue with a card reader. “Andrew called me back right away and walked me through it. They’re very customer service focused.”
The Fibertel team had to be flexible throughout the process, says Sambury, serving the building’s stakeholders while translating their vision of a smart building into reality. “I always credit the team we have here. I was very happy that we were able to bring the team members together to come up with a design that could mesh the various systems together. It was truthfully and honestly a full team endeavor.”

Students are facing new challenges this fall, but security tools and policies may help the transition

By Alanna Fairey
Back-to-school shopping looked a little different this year.
In previous years, the priority has been on school supplies — this year it was all about PPE, hand sanitizer and technology solutions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Minaz Jivraj, chief security officer for the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, in Mississauga, Ont., shared that while the school board has not drastically changed their security protocols and guidelines, circumstances are clearly different.
Explaining the “new norm,” Jivraj said that the schools have implemented a strict no-visitor policy, unless visits have been pre-arranged, as well as masks must be worn.
While there have been discussions regarding temperature detection solutions for the schools, they have not installed anything as yet.
However, he noted that if “a child or students are not feeling well, they have the ability to take temperature or if somebody is showing symptoms of being unwell, we have the ability to turn around and take [their] temperature. This is a new environment that we are walking into.”
A number of schools are exploring security solutions that would give parents some peace of mind as schools reopen for the fall.
One such solution is the i-PRO Secure Campus, which Panasonic i-PRO Sensing Solutions launched in the U.S. in August in the lead up to back-to-school.
According to William Brennan, president of Panasonic i-PRO, the company’s Secure Campus program represents a new focus and direction.
“K-12 safety is a priority, and this program goes far beyond the typical product focus that most suppliers offer by providing a holistic
solution to help school administrators better navigate the process of implementing or upgrading their security systems,” Brennan said in an email interview.
“The Secure Campus program is truly a comprehensive solution that helps schools overcome longstanding challenges to campus safety.”
Brennan explained that the technology gives school security and administration personnel the capability to monitor and control access over virtually every zone of the school — from external entry gates, student drop-off and parking areas, surrounding grounds, facility entrances and common areas, such as cafeterias, gyms, theatres and studios.
“Given the fact that analytics and artificial intelligence are now being built into our products both at the edge and on a system-wide level, the sophistication capabilities of both new and existing i-PRO systems can continue to evolve on an on-going basis,” Brennan
“Student and teacher safety will be, first and foremost, the best benefit that comes out of this.”
— Tim Grose, G4S
said. “This allows schools to focus their attention on education in a non-invasive and unobtrusive manner that is more conducive to higher learning.”
Tim Grose, vice-president of sales, secure integration, G4S, said that the company has received inquiries about solutions regarding entry into the school such as access control, keeping visitors out, and keeping track of who is in the building, as well as video surveillance solutions.
Grose also noted that G4S has received requests for thermal temperature solutions and technologies to ensure that students are in compliance with the mask policy.
“It’s going to be difficult for a lot of teachers to disrupt their class to [implement the mask policy],” Grose said. “The conversations we’re having with them are around advanced robotics — what it does is measure if the person’s wearing a mask and then physically sees them. They can also do a thermal scan of elevated body temperature and check if they have a mask on.
“It sends an audible alert to the person to notify them that they are not in compliance with the mask policy,” Grose explained.
Stéphane Chayer, vice-president of smart infrastructure at Siemens Canada, said that the COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the importance of air quality. The company has provided heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions to college and university campuses, who reached out to Siemens Canada to make sure their systems are up-to-date.
“We’re looking at the filtration and if there is a possibility to upgrade to filtration to stop the virus to spread throughout the dock,” Chayer said. “We want to make sure that our customers are mixing the air with the right level of fresh air.”
Chayer also shared that in addition to filtration systems, Siemens Canada has provided Ultraviolet (UV) technology to campuses, which may help to kill pathogens.
“You want to make sure that you have a good control system that is up to date, and you have no deficiency in your system,” Chayer stressed. “These variables were the reason why we were pulled back into our customer base to do some improvements.”
While Siemens Canada has integrated HVAC solutions for college and university campuses, this has not been the case for K-12 schools, as most of the buildings are older and have outdated ventilation systems that are un-
able to accommodate newer technologies.
While Siemens Canada may not be able to assist K-12 schools yet, Chayer anticipates that as the COVID-19 situation develops, K-12 schools will move from a “rather static type of system to a more dynamic and digital system to record information in real-time.”
“Air quality is definitely something that people will focus on, using filtration and also [as] a technology to kill the virus — not only to filter it,” Chayer explained. “Occupancy monitoring will also be typically something that will emerge once customers have implemented the basic preventive maintenance with remote monitoring.”
While it is still too early in the school year to confirm whether or not such solutions will help to improve the current COVID-19 pandemic, integrators agree that the pandemic allowed them to come up with new solutions to help protect the public.
“The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic is accelerating this transformation further with integrated systems now being used for health and safety applications,” Brennan said.
“This is changing the dynamic of the industry and opening up many new opportunities for security professionals in the evolving business intelligence and IoT arena.”
Chayer stressed the importance of air conditioning and what the technology can do for a building amid COVID-19.
“There’s always a cost benefit but even if there’s costs needed to invest in upgrading those buildings, the benefit is amazing,” Chayer said. “If you don’t invest now, and you have a second wave, the same thing will happen again.”
If schools are considering adding new security solutions, Chayer encourages them to “analyze, ask the experts and invest in upgrading your assets.”
As security solutions such as thermal temperature screening and new access control capabilities become the new normal, Grose believes that the purpose of these technologies is to help create a safer environment, especially for K-12 schools.
“Student and teacher safety will be, first and foremost, the best benefit that comes out of this,” Grose says. “I think the technologies that we are putting in are going to benefit people. As their children go to another environment, parents will know that [they] are going to be as safe as they possibly can be.”
