We have access to a world of knowledge, but many people only believe what they see
We live in a time of skepticism. Many people are distrustful of government, of business, of expertise, of educational institutions; of any information that is provided by what once was considered a credible source.
As a longtime member of the media, I have been on the frontlines of this growing skepticism towards those who disseminate information.
This distrust does not come out of nowhere. It is, in part, a result of some legitimate concerns. Government and businesses have not always been honest. Media have published information that was incorrect. Experts have advanced theories that are later found to be incorrect. People are not perfect even though the prevailing mood seems to be they should be.
Unfortunately, unsavoury players use those above examples to sow distrust in academia, the business community, government and media.
This is not new. What is new is we live in a time where we have access to more information than we have ever had before. Anything you want to know is just a few fingertip clicks away.
That should be a good thing.
However, the effect is that people can now easily cocoon themselves in information that only strengthens their preconceived biases. Prevailing viewpoints are pushed aside, ignored or just never seen.
For the aggregate industry, trying to secure community buy-in for new pits and quarries was already a difficult journey. This new information age and skepticism of authority only adds to the challenge.
We need stone and gravel, perhaps more so now than at any time in recent memory. The country is dire need of more housing and infrastructure. That cannot be built without aggregate.
Residents in communities that may be host to aggregate operations have reasonable concerns about the impact a quarry could have on the local environment and road networks. They are concerned about dust, noise, and the toll of trucks rolling up and down local roads.
But companies have answers to those questions. There are mitigation measures in place. New technologies are always lessening the environmental impacts of an operation. Taxes are paid that help support the care and upkeep of those roads, as well as the general community. Operations provide employment to many in the community. The benefits of a quarry are extensive.
Unfortunately, we live in a time when people not only distrust the words that come from businesses and government officials, but also a time where the only information they are often accessing is that which underscores their already made-up mind.
To combat this, I reminded of an axiom in writing that also feels relevant in the area of publication relations: Show, don’t tell.
Be part of the community through ongoing engagement in public meetings and being present at local community events. These are important steps in building up a relationship with a community.
In the next few editions, we will profile examples of companies showing and not telling about the good works they do. In this edition, we profile the rehabilitation efforts at an Ontario pit.
Those who drive or walk by the land will see that transformation happen in real time. Such projects may not change minds on their own, but each helps open doors to skeptical minds we need on our side.

Standard General Edmonton, a Colas company, is the first asphalt concrete pavement producer in Western Canada to offer Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for its asphalt mixtures.

This makes Standard General Edmonton the second company in Canada to offer EPDs for asphalt concrete pavement.
“We are proud that Standard General Edmonton, a division of Colas Western Canada, is now offering EPDs for the asphalt produced in Acheson, Alberta. We are proud to be the first company in Western Canada to offer EPDs as it aligns with our goal of being the leader in transportation infrastructure within the communities we operate,” said Shawn Jubinville, president of Colas Western Canada Inc.
EPDs are like the nutrition facts found on food labels, which give a full, impartial, third-party verified report on the environmental, cradle-to-gate impact on the specific product produced at a particular plant.
The process used to develop an EPD ensures consistency in data collection, analysis, and reporting, and third-party verification ensures trustworthiness in the information communicated through an EPD.
EPDs help decision-makers assess a product from an environmental perspective, allowing them to make informed decisions regarding the impact of that product on a project. As well, the information contained in the EPDs helps asphalt manufacturers benchmark their products and continue searching for solutions to reduce their environmental impact.
Colas’ states its support and partnership with WAP Sustainability and, by association, the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA), were key in making the NAPA Emerald Eco-Label tool for the development of asphalt mixture EPDs available in Canada.
The result of this partnership is the first EPD available from Standard General Edmonton and the multiple EPDs available from Miller Paving Ltd., another Colas company, which is based out of Ontario.

> A parcel of land that, for decades, has supplied an Ontario community with sand and gravel is now providing that community with crops of corn, soybeans and wheat.
The property, known as Boyington Pit, is owned by The Miller Group and is part of a 196-hectare piece of land south of the town of Uxbridge in Ontario’s Durham Region.
“The pit is one of three properties that were originally purchased from the Boyington family in 1965 by Markham Sand and Gravel, which became a part of The Miller Group in 1976,” explains Megan Smythe, planning co-ordinator with The Miller Group. “The site has supplied sand and gravel for local construction projects within the Uxbridge area and Region of Durham. Prior to becoming a sand and gravel pit, the site was primarily used for agriculture.”

Under the Aggregate Resources Act, operations are required to have a detailed rehabilitation plan as part of the licensing process. The Boyington Pit rehabilitation plan is to return the site back to an agricultural use.
The goal is to complete the rehabilitation of the eastern portion of the site, and focus current and future extraction to the west, where the active face is. Of the 196 hectares, about half of the site (94 hectares) was disturbed and the rest was forest and undisturbed future reserve land remaining in agricultural use.
“We looked at the pit from a larger land stewardship perspective to determine the best balance of the site to meet our extraction needs while simultaneously returning as much of the land to agriculture as possible. This goal helps reduce the total disturbed area on site. As of 2024, nearly 40 per cent of the disturbed area
has been rehabilitated,” Smythe explains.
The work began in 2021 when Todd Brothers and equipment operators from VicDom Sand and Gravel rehabilitated 11 hectares at the northeast of the site back to agriculture use.
“This area was chosen first because it was depleted and quite visible from the nearby road,” Smythe explains.
After being graded, Highview Holstein amended the soil with horse manure and began using the fields as part of its on-site crop rotations. Highview Holsteins’ now utilize both the undisturbed and rehabilitated disturbed lands as part of its agricultural operations on the site.
Each spring a portion of the land is returned to agriculture use with Todd Brothers spending a month grading and reshaping the land, followed by Highview Holsteins follows adding these lands to its crop rotation and land stewardship practices.

Today, the rehabilitated land is being used to grow corn, soybeans and wheat. For the 2024 season, corn is being grown.
The first-year yields on the land were around 30 to 50 per cent of that on undisturbed land on the property and The Miller Group plans on tracking the yields over the course of several years.
“Since the soils have been stored in stockpiles, we expect that it will take some time to rebuild the soil structure, organic matter and biological activities. We expect that the yields will increase with time and amendments, and we have a three- to
five- year plan where we work closely with Highview Holsteins,” she says.
The Miller Group is relying on Highview Holsteins’ expertise for decisions on soil amendments and crop rotations.
Over the three years of rehabilitation work, approximately 30 hectares of the site (nearly 72 acres), have been returned to agricultural use. Those areas of the property that are not suitable for farming, in part due to steep slopes, will eventually be turned into forest lands.
“In 2023, about 6.5 hectares in the northeast portion of the site was planted with 7,200 trees composed of 10 different
native species,” Smythe explains. “The tree planting is part of Miller’s larger program that aims to plant 115,000 trees over 10 years starting in 2022. In the first three years, Miller has planted nearly 50,000 trees across 10 of our sites.”
The Boyington Pit site is also host to two dozen beehives from local beekeeper, Circling Hawk Apiaries.
Smythe notes this project would not be possible without the experience and expertise of the equipment operators.
“Skilled operators are paramount to rehabilitation work and may even execute the grading and earthwork above and beyond the initial vision,” she says.
The efforts are being noticed by the wider community and industry. Residents cycling, driving or walking past the site can’t help but see the changes. The project also received the Judge’s Choice Award for Progressive Rehabilitation at the 2023 Ontario Stone, Sand and Gravel Association Industry Awards.
“Having a farmer fully engaged with the rehabilitation work can help spread the word and earn community buy-in as well,” Smythe explains. “Rehabilitation is an opportunity for the industry. If we do a good job and demonstrate responsible land stewardship, with time the community may not know that the site was formerly a pit. As an industry, we need to continue to push for more good work and find more ways to document, share, and communicate.”
The work has not come without challenges. The pit has existed for many years. As a result, some of the on-site materials have been stored in stockpiles for a longtime. Smythe explains.
“The prolonged storage of soil in stockpiles and berms decreases the organic matter in the soil and once the soil is applied to the site for rehabilitation, can take more time and amendments to return to the same productivity as its pre-extraction conditions. This is one of the reasons that progressive rehabilitation of a site is important,” Smythe says. “The composition of the site is very variable, with a mix of very fine sands as well as high quality sand and gravel and sometimes shallow topsoil. Additionally, these fine grain soils can be prone to erosion.”
The pit is in Ontario’s Oak Ridges Moraine, an ecologically important area in Ontario that spans 470,000 acres of land. Legislation regulates how that land can be used, which presents some unique challenges for the site, Smythe says.
A tornado in the spring of 2022 also caused some washouts and erosion on newly grades areas that were then unable to be seeded and farmed by Highview Holsteins.
“Our challenge from here on out will be the availability of topsoil on site to continue rehabilitating the pit. Finding more topsoil in the area will be important for the next steps,” says Smythe.
Since 2021, The Miller Group has rehabilitated five separate sites to agriculture, open space and recreational waterbody. Through that process, the company has learned quite a bit about how to make that successful.
“An operator must follow their approved ARA site plans when executing a rehabilitation plan for a pit. When preparing a rehabilitation plan, the approval process will assess the best end use of the lands based on the site conditions, surroundings, and potential future opportunities,” Smythe explains. “For example, the industry standard of 3:1 slopes are too steep to be farmed so to return as much of the site back to agriculture as possible, slopes need to be gentle enough to operate farming equipment on. More soil is required to execute gentler slopes for farming.”
She says an important point to remember is soil management.
“Long term storage of soil in berms should be avoided and when creating the site plans, operators should investigate which berms are actually necessary or not. When soil is placed in berms, you are delaying the availability of that soil to be used and needs to be closely managed in the progressive rehabilitation of a site. Soil importation can be a great tool for maximizing soil productivity and enhancing the final use of the site.”
A good rehabilitation plan should also rely on working closely with experts, she
adds. For example, if the land is going to be eventually used for agricultural purposes, speak with a farmer.
“Having the general buy-in and investment of the farmer on site, like Highview Holsteins, significantly contributes to the success of a rehabilitation plan by utilizing their expertise in soils amendments and crop rotations,” she adds.
As well, it’s also helpful to have the baseline conditions of the soil and site before extraction beings. That allows you to monitor how rehabilitation is progressing.

RTR: BILL, HOW IMPORTANT IS DATA TRACKING AND LIFECYCLE ASSESSMENT WHEN IT COMES TO MOVING OPERATIONS CLOSER TO NET ZERO GOALS?
BILL: It’s everything, you can’t produce an EPD without having that in place. It’s not necessarily a short-term thing, you want to have some history on your operations. A lot of it is part of management of your general business -- understanding your utilities, your natural gas, your electricity, the fuel consumption at your at your operations -- but also tracking things like waste and water. A lot of what you’re going to be doing is compiling this information that gives you your baseline assessments as to where you are.
RTR: KEVIN, WITH THE WORK YOU’RE DOING OVER AT ATHENA, HOW IMPORTANT IS TRACKING AND LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA) TO ACHIEVING THESE NET ZERO GOALS? GIVEN YOUR LCA AND EPD WORK, HOW DO THEY CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS THAT?
KEVIN: First, just a very brief background on what an LCA is before I jump into its use. An LCA is a scientific technique for estimating the environmental impact associated with a product or service over the course of its life. We’re collecting all the inputs and outputs from manufacturing processes, which we call flows.
This takes into account stuff like how much fuel you’re using, or how many explosives you’re using if you’re doing aggregate-production; kind of like an itemized list of everything coming in and out of your plant.
All of that gets tied to background data sets and calculated to produce or estimate your environmental impact. Life cycle assessments look at a variety of different metrics, the most important of which is carbon intensity. But there’s a few others as well, about 15 or 20, such as acidification potential, waste generated and water usage.
Results for LCA studies and EPDs are presented per unit of production – for instance, if you’re looking at aggregates or asphalt, it’s typically per ton of production. When you get the results for your LCA, it’s going to give you a better understanding of your environmental impact across all of these categories, specifically carbon intensity, that’s the one everyone’s caring about these days.
It will also give you some of the hot spots within your manufacturing that are the highest contributors to your environmental impact, such as on-site fuel use, utilities use, natural gas or electricity. LCAs are a good way to pinpoint where some of those hotspots are, and might help you plan some strategies for reducing your impact.
MATE: EPDs are very, very new, right? We were the first to do it here in Canada, and I think it’s only been about a month as of right now. But the process itself… we’ve always been tracking, always looking at it, but there was always the component of validation. It was always, ‘OK, if you do this process, how much are you going to save? How do you validate that number?’ And it took a lot of time to validate, justify and understand it.
With the LCAs, EPDs and these tools coming in, what’s been really beneficial is it tells us the data. What we’ve really seen the last month is the data it’s showing us and helping us make these decisions. One thing we do is focus on the manufacturing side of it and say, ‘OK, how much can we reduce it from the manufacturer side in terms of natural gas? In terms of intensity per ton?’
What it really opened up our eyes to is actually on the material selection point of view. So, with material selection, how much is virgin aggregate? How far away is it coming from? Is it quarried? Is it a natural sand and gravel? The biggest input for us is the asphalt cement: are there ways of reducing asphalt cement? How much does that actually reflect on it as well?
When you put it all together, these EPDs are really helping us dive into the hotspots and everything else, to really show us what it is. It’s a very professional document that we’ve able to show to our customers. So, we’re using it internally for justification on
new technologies to reduce the carbon footprint, but also when we go see our end use customers.
Our customers are like, ‘how do we sell this to our customers -- the parking lot owners, the road municipalities, everyone else?’ And it’s really good: it’s a very professional document that’s third party verified. It has our name on it, as well as theirs. It’s a really great tool that we’ve already seen very good success on.
RTR: WHAT IS AN EPD AND HOW DOES IT DRIVE OPERATIONS CLOSER TO CARBON EFFICIENCY?
KEVIN: EPDs are basically just the publicly-available results from an LCA study. LCA studies are going to have lots of confidential information in it based on your specific manufacturing facility, and we don’t want to include that information in public communications. An EPD is basically taking the results from all of that confidential background information and posting it. They’re primarily a transparency document that outlines the environmental impacts of a particular product or service.
The way I like to think of it is, It’s kind of like a nutrition label for food in terms of the food’s impact on your body, but instead, it’s for a product, and outlines the product’s impact on the environment over a wide range of categories.
KEVIN: The first is just getting some sort of baseline for where you’re at in terms of environmental impact. It can be really helpful just knowing where you’re at, especially for comparing

yourself to industry averages or standards, to see how you’re doing in comparison to everyone else. It will also pinpoint the hotspots for you, and help you identify strategies for where you could improve.
RTR: MATE, COULD YOU TALK ABOUT THE HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF MILLER’S EPD PROGRAM? HOW YOU WERE INVOLVED IN IT AND, GIVEN THAT WE’RE NOW A MONTH OUT FROM ITS LAUNCH, ARE THERE ANY RESULTS OR FEEDBACK THAT YOU COULD SHARE ON HOW IT’S BEEN GOING?
MATE: A lot of fears with an EPD was how much extra administrative work it was going to take, in terms of what needs to be tracked and how we’re going to track it. We had an Excel spreadsheet, and we went through starting to track the data, and then working closely with NAPA (National Asphalt Pavement Association) and their developers, we got the tool. It took a few iterations, I won’t lie, because they were trying to transition it from US to Canada.
As you’re going through it, like anything, you come up with some hiccups. We worked through all the hiccups. We started with one asphalt plant, which was our Whitby plant, and once we got it through a few iterations, it wasn’t that bad. Because what does it ask for? It asks, what’s your production? How much is used in terms of water, energy, or anything to do with production.
The best part of the other side is the recipes. We have our mix designs, which we already give to the owners of what we’re doing. So, you put all those inputs in, and once you establish it, it probably takes about half an hour to an hour to establish the plant. It’s very user friendly, and as we went from plant to plant to plant, it got lot quicker. Once you actually have the design to copy from one plant to another, it probably takes 15 minutes until it’s ready to print off and you can use it wherever you like.
RTR: BILL, WHEN LOOKING AT THE SUPPLY CHAIN, AN EPD MIGHT MEAN SOMETHING VERY DIFFERENTLY FOR THE PRODUCER OF THE MATERIALS VERSUS THE END USER OF THOSE MATERIALS. DO YOU HAVE ANY INSIGHTS WHEN IT COMES TO HOW EPDS’ VALUE IS DIFFERENT FOR PEOPLE ON THE MATERIAL SUPPLIER SIDE COMPARED TO THOSE ON THE USER SIDE?
BILL: On the user side, basically you’re getting environmentallyconscious customers now. They’re starting to choose products and make purchases based on what the environmental footprint is. You’ll see it more from municipalities and governments more so at first, but it’s going to trickle down through the whole private sector as well. They’re going to start making decisions, not only on price points, but also on carbon footprints.
RTR: NOW THAT WE’VE ESTABLISHED WHAT THESE TOOLS ARE AND HOW THEY WORK, I’D LIKE TO LOOK AT THE STEPS THAT OUR AUDIENCE CAN TAKE TO MAKE THE BEST USE OF THEM. KEVIN, WHAT DOES THIS PROCESS LOOK LIKE FOR ANY OPERATION OUT THERE THAT WANTS TO IMPLEMENT EPDS? IS THERE ANY ADVICE YOU HAVE FOR COMPANIES INTERESTED IN THIS, OR CHALLENGES THAT THEY SHOULD BE MINDFUL OF?
KEVIN: I’ll start off with kind of high-level steps of what it looks like to create your EPD. The first is going to be scope development. That’s going to be looking at what do you want to include within this EPD, how many mix designs do you want to include, and what plants do you want to include. All of that kind of feeds into the next step of the data collection.
Once you have the scope defined, now we need to figure out what kind of data we need to collect, and from what facilities. Once the scope is defined in the data that’s all been collected, then we’d move into the LCA modeling, which is where you’d start using the tools that we’ve been referring to, to get an idea of your environmental impact.
Once the model is complete, then we’d get into the creation of the final documents, that would be the EPD document, and typically a LCA background report summarizing the LCA study with third-party verified EPDs. Once all of those steps are complete, you’d move into sending the EPD and background report to a program operator for third party review, such as ASTM or NAPA.
The biggest challenge we see within the EPD process for manufacturers is that data collection phase. Ensuring accuracy in the current data is really crucial to the accuracy of the EPD. The tricky thing is the data can come from a wide variety of sources: you could have total production based off sales records, weigh scales; you could have purchase records used for tracking your diesel. Basically, you’re grabbing this information from all these different parts, and it can be somewhat overwhelming, and definitely challenging at times, for manufacturers to even start that process.
Typically it’s an iterative process. How I work with EPDs with manufacturers is they’ll give us the data, we will review the data, and typically we’ll find something that maybe looks a little bit off, might need some more diving into to get a little more details on, and we’ll go back and forth, typically about two to three times, until the data is final. When the manufacturers are comfortable, then we’ll move forward with the modeling.
I guess one piece of advice I could give is to try to get an idea of where you’re going to pull this data from ahead of time if you can, and to try tracking it internally before you start the EPD development process just to make it a little more efficient and less painful.
“The biggest challenge we see within the EPD process for manufacturers is that data collection phase. Ensuring accuracy in the current data is really crucial to the accuracy of the EPD.”

The Alaska Highway is a vitally important link, but maintaining this remote northern road is a significant challenge
> The historic and iconic Alaska Highway, a two-lane ribbon of road that winds its way nearly 2,500 kilometres across northern British Columbia and southern Yukon into the northern American state dubbed The Last Frontier, is a principal and critical land link to the rest of Canada and the lower American states and a vital lifeline for communities on both sides of the border.
However, because of its northern location, the road surface is often subject to the effects of harsh, wintry weather. More recently, thawing permafrost has affected the stability of the ground beneath the pavement, causing distorted road surfaces with cracks, bumps and potholes.
Rising temperatures have, in many places, caused the active layer of ground that freezes and thaws seasonally to deepen, resulting in cracked road shoulders, sunken and warped guardrails along the edge of the thoroughfare, which makes affected sections difficult to maintain.
Maintaining and keeping the road in good working condition is an ongoing battle. Getting workers, materials and equipment to work sites is also a challenge.
Presently, Peters Brothers Construction Ltd. Is working on a $13.5-million asphalt overlay project between kilometre 390 and 451 of the highway near Fort Nelson, B.C. The contract involves repairing 61 kilometres of road surface by grinding existing asphalt where cracking and rutting has been observed, removing deficient pavement and applying an asphalt coating.
Once the surface treatment has been completed, the area will have rumble strips installed and lines painted.
The project will improve the condition and safety of the aging asphalt and extend the service life of the road surface. Work on the project began in June and is expected to finish sometime in October.
Several other projects are planned or under way, including intersection improvements at kilometre 225, rockfall protection at kilometres 228 and 698, and erosion protection at kilometre 660.
Next year, a 225-kilometre northern stretch of the thoroughfare through the Yukon, known as the Shakwak Highway, from Destruction Bay on Kluane Lake to the Alaska/Canada border, is slated to be upgraded. The section faces a range of road maintenance and safety challenges due to thawing permafrost.
Restoration efforts will involve resurfacing and repairing the road underneath the surface and culverts. Improvements will also be made to the drainage system to make sure the road can be used safely.
Total cost of the project is nearly $43 million.
Krysten Johnson, manager, communications and public relations for Yukon Highways and Public Works, notes there are unique challenges to doing highway restoration work in remote northern locations such as a shorter summer construction season and limited accommodations for staff and fuel locations. The materials used for the projects are also more expensive.
“Planning is key for this work to be done on time and efficiently,” she states, noting that advance preparation is key to ensuring that every step of the road restoration process, such as funding, permitting, acquiring aggregate, environmental assessments and design, goes smoothly and is completed on time.
“This is especially true in our northern context, as efficient planning enables us to make the most of our short construction season.”
Part of that planning includes consulting local Indigenous peoples.
“We have consulted the First Nations early in the planning process, and we are committed to engaging with them often when work is ongoing,” says Johnson.
Materials and construction methods to be used are also carefully considered when renovating a northern highway.
“Common construction materials and methods are more expensive in remote northern locations than they are further south,” adds Johnson. “As such, we instead use materials and methods suited to our unique locations.”
Work on the Shakwak Highway stretch will rehabilitate and enhance the road surface to make it safer and more comfortable to drive on. In addition to the resurfacing, slopes on the thoroughfare will be fixed, guardrails will be replaced and culverts will be replaced to improve drainage.
Some sections will need to be rebuilt entirely, which could involve raising the road 15 to 20 feet in some sections so it's less vulnerable to thaw. Similar upgrades were made to the North Klondike Highway.
In light of the unique northern conditions, the plan is to use bituminous surface treatment, known in roadbuilding circles as BST, which is less expensive than asphalt, easier to transport, and

more flexible and versatile on roads that experience settlement due to thawing permafrost.
“We also use strategies to mitigate permafrost thaw, a concern affecting the North, by using ventilated road shoulders, permafrost culverts and thermosyphons,” explains Johnson. “These methods all seek to keep the permafrost cool, which makes it more stable and prevents further thawing, all in an effort to help improve road conditions.”
Thermosyphons are a series of tubes that allow heat to escape the ground, therefore keeping it solid. The Government of Yukon installed thermosyphons along 400 metres of the Alaska Highway near Beaver Creek as part of a pilot project in partnership with researchers at Yukon University.
Johnson says the government is anticipating the restoration work on the north part of the Alaska Highway to begin in 2025, as U.S. funding has been secured. The State of Alaska and the United States Department of Transportation are providing the funds for the project as it will bolster security, facilitate trade, promote tourism and support indispensable facets of daily life in the North.
Earlier this year, the Yukon and Alaska submitted a joint application for U.S. government funding under a discretionary grant program. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act has specific language that allows portions of the Alaska Highway in Canada to compete for and receive U.S. federal grant funding for its reconstruction.
In February, Alaska and Yukon signed an agreement that outlines collaborative efforts to address key priorities along the Alaska Highway, including roadway maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, and emergency preparedness.
Officials on both sides of the border have hailed the crossborder partnership as a signal of shared commitment to regional connectivity that will benefit Yukoners and Alaskans. The roadway also links the traditional territories of the Champagne and Aishihik, Kluane and White River First Nations.
Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai says the partnership showcases the importance of working in collaboration towards a shared goal for northerners.
“The north Alaska highway is a vital component of our collective regional infrastructure. Maintaining this corridor bolsters security, facilitates trade, promotes tourism, and supports essential aspects of daily life in the North.”
Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy says the project is a “significant milestone for Alaska as we advance our partnership with the Yukon. We look forward to an exciting construction season ahead.”
Yukon Highways and Public Works Minister Nils Clarke said the funding will help mitigate the effects of thawing permafrost on the essential roadway.
“This contribution showcases both our governments’ recognition of the importance of this road link, as well as our commitment to keep the north Alaska Highway safe for all road travelers.”
The original Alaska Highway was built over a nine-month period in 1942 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide land access to Alaska from the lower 48 states during the Second World War. It connected Dawson Creek, B.C. to Delta Junction, in Alaska. The permanent location of the highway was completed in 1943, and it was opened to civilians in 1948.
The highway, now 80 years old, was the most expensive project of the Second World War, costing about $185 million at the time. It took 11,000 soldiers and engineers, about 16,000 civilians, and 7,000 pieces of equipment to build the highway.

US-based manufacturer Superior Industries has unveiled a revised design of its popular Conveyor Impact Cradle.
The new arrangement includes larger pad cartridges to enhance durability and a reinforced point of connection between the pads and cradle frame.

According to Superior’s engineers, the Conveyor Impact Cradle is a modern redesign of the traditional impact bed. While both products absorb the force of falling material to prevent damage to conveyor belts, Superior states the Impact Cradle is specifically engineered to address common shortcomings associated with the design of traditional impact beds. These include:
• Curved bed fully supports belting, leaving no gaps to trap fugitive material.
• Pads are easy to slide on or off cradle frame in tight, hard to access transition zones.
• No special tools required, which speeds installation and maintenance.
• One-piece pads made from a special urethane to reduce friction and enhance cushioning.
In addition to these redesigned features, Superior’s Impact Cradle is newly available in two more pre-engineered models: medium and heavy duty are now available in addition to the standard model, which was first introduced to conveyor owners in 2017.
Astec adds charcoal filters to Fiberbed Mist Collector to improve blue smoke control

Astec Industries has announced the integration of charcoal filters into its patentpending Fiberbed Mist Collector.
Astec explains this enhancement improves the system’s ability to capture and eliminate odor-causing compounds, improving air quality and community satisfaction for asphalt facilities.
Astec’s Fiberbed Mist Collector technology captures and cleans blue smoke generated during silo or loadout operations. With the addition of charcoal filters, the system now offers a more comprehensive approach to odor control. By trapping and neutralizing odor-causing compounds, the charcoal filters reduce detectable odors emanating from the facility.

Operating heavy equipment in quarries near water bodies can be tricky. On top of regular constraints like budget and timeline, you need to carry out the work in a way that minimizes environmental impacts like erosion and sedimentation, as well as keep fish habitats protected. When equipment moves around or disturbs exposed soil, it potentially makes available sediment to enter nearby water bodies, degrading the water quality, and potentially harming aquatic habitats.
For equipment operators, it’s crucial to understand these challenges and know how to tackle them. Not only does this limit operational slowdowns, but it also ensures you’re complying with environmental regulations and necessary permits, approvals, or licences. Here are some tips to help you keep things running smoothly.
The goal of operators is to hold the soil in place, or where movement does take place, to trap it before leaving the work area or reaching off-site receptors.
• Exposed soils can be stabilized using erosion control blankets, mulch, or quick-growing vegetation to stabilize soil in areas where heavy equipment has disturbed the ground. This prevents sediment from being washed away during rain events or spring snow melt.
• Sediment barriers can be installed such as setting up silt fences, waddles or sediment traps around disturbed areas to catch sediment before it reaches water bodies. Regularly inspect and maintain these barriers to ensure they are effective.
Improper water management can lead to excessive runoff, erosion, and potential contamination of water bodies, resulting in operational delays due to the need for corrective measures or potential regulatory compliance issues.
• Control water runoff by using diversion ditches or berms to direct clean runoff away from disturbed areas, reducing the volume of water that can potentially pick up sediment as it flows across the site.
• Check dams, erosion wattles or enviroberms (permeable barriers) can be deployed to slow the speed of flow.
• Use sediment ponds or basins to capture runoff, allowing sediments to settle out before the water is
discharged. These should be regularly cleaned out to maintain their capacity and effectiveness.
• If water needs to be discharged from the site, ensure it is released at a controlled rate to minimize the risk of erosion or damage to downstream habitats and monitor the water quality being released. Avoid discharging water from areas undergoing active dredging or excavation near water, to reduce potential sedimentation related concerns (e.g., impacts to fish habitat, neighbouring landowners).
Operations near water bodies pose potential risks to fish and fish habitats, including sedimentation, spills, and physical disturbances. Protecting these habitats is crucial to avoid regulatory issues and operational delays.
• Ensure that a buffer of natural vegetation is left intact between operations and water bodies. This vegetation acts as a natural filter, trapping sediments and pollutants before they reach the water.
• Whenever possible, schedule the most disruptive activities outside of critical periods for fish, such as spawning seasons (also known as Restricted Activity Periods). This reduces the risk of disturbing fish habitats when they are most vulnerable.
• Regularly monitor the water quality near your operations to detect any signs of impact or sedimentation early. Quick detection allows for immediate corrective actions, preventing more severe impacts and operational slowdowns.
For equipment operators, staying ahead of erosion, sedimentation, and water protection is key to avoiding costly slowdowns or regulatory compliance issues. Regularly check that all erosion control measures are in place and functioning as intended, stay informed about the environmental regulations in your area and for your site, and communicate effectively with site managers and environmental teams. These proactive efforts will go a long way towards ensuring your work is both effective and environmentally sound.
