As the autumn leaves begin to change and another season winds down, we’re left with the inevitable questions: Is now the right time to buy, or will interest rates go back down? Can I get one more year out of this equipment, or should I buy something new? How much planned downtime do I need to schedule now to save unplanned downtime next year? What can I add to my operation to save money?
No need to consult that Magic 8 Ball, we’ve got you covered. For our annual buyers’ guide we spoke to experts in the industry on pricing and market behaviours, looked at what’s new in the world of telematics and got advice on what should be considered before adding to your equipment to get the most out of it.
All that and comprehensive, updated listings await you in this month’s pages.
Over the last several months I’ve had the opportunity to talk to experts from across the industry and one theme emerged in all our conversations — regular maintenance and planned downtime are the most important things in any operation to make your dollar go further.
As you start planning your end-of-year checklist, you’ll want to make time for more in-depth inspections of equipment, with an eye to identifying potential issues before they happen.
Alex Caruana, national manager - Canadian aggregates for Polydeck, told me a full walkthrough of equipment may mean the difference between planned downtime and waiting 18 months for a backordered part.
If you need advice on how to properly conduct a walkthrough, or just want help completing the task, many OEMs and dealers will send someone out to help you navigate the process. There’s nothing better
than a second set of eyes when looking for potential pit falls.
Walkthroughs aren’t the only thing helping you plan your downtime. The shiniest of new telematics gadgets are offering help with everything from grading to safety and yes, maintenance. Smart equipment is now designed to detect a potential problem before it causes a shutdown, allowing you to see further ahead.
If you’re investing in new equipment in the next few years, that technology will likely be built right in, sending up-to-theminute performance information right to your phone or computer. If you’re trying to maximize the years you have left in some older equipment, third-party systems can be installed to give you a similar result.
Even better than that Magic 8 Ball, the latest in technology and innovations will make you feel like you’ve got the future of your equipment under control.
Whether you’re buying new or just looking for a way to get a little more out of what you’ve got, the key to a successful operation is always maintenance.
Speaking of maintenance, if you're looking for latest in tips and tricks for keeping things running smoothly, Quarry Tech 2023 is kicking off just as this issue is hitting the stands.
If you're reading this before Oct. 24, it's not too late to register to join us in Kanata, Ont. for the big event! Just head over to quarrytech.ca for all the information you need to sign-up for this one-day, in-person event.
This year's line-up will feature speakers sharing case studies and techniques for overcoming issues without lengthy downtime or added cost. Stay tuned for all the coverage in a future issue of Rock to Road.

The right telematics systems will save you time and money
> None of us is a stranger to technology. More than two decades after the first GPS units were put into heavy construction equipment, we’re used to seeing connected technology — more commonly known as telematics systems — offered on everything from excavators, to screeners and crushers, to haul trucks.
A recent report from Mordor Intelligence says the telematics market for construction machinery is expected to grow from US $1.3 billion in 2023 to US $2.4 billion in 2028 due, in part, to a wider availability of smaller, faster technology.
Edward Olson, product manager, digitalization at John Deere, says while the company has been selling equipment with smart technology included for 20 years, the last few years have seen a significant amount of growth in connected offerings from many OEMs.
“Modem availability and price points that are acceptable to smaller machines let us provide… connectivity across all our machines. In addition, those 4G LTE modems can get more

data more often from all those machines,” he said.
The smaller, faster and cheaper availability of 4G and 5G LTE modem technology, in addition to the improvement of sensor technology, has made it easier for manufactures to incorporate connections into their equipment and expand their offerings to customers.
Those sensors can do everything from making maintenance easier and issues detectable sooner, decreasing downtime, to increasing safety for operators and those around them, and providing assisted operation, improving the overall accuracy of a job.
For John Deere those innovations include offering customers excavators with what it calls SmartGrade, a feature that allows operators to receive accurate, realtime information about distance to target grade, including reference information about the design plans such as boundary areas, features of the design, contour break lines, as well as the finish grade surface itself.
“Without Grade Control, these insights were only available on paper plans and visual references like paint lines and grade stakes which are usually destroyed during work and are often out of date,” said Olson.
Having the latest and greatest seems like a good idea, but upgrading a site’s entire lineup to match one connected ecosystem is costly and may be impossible. Olson says one of the challenges facing manufacturers is ensuring their devices can work well together to allow customers to buy from different brands for different needs,
or even keep older equipment.
“John Deere machines offer differentiating performance, but they still need to work with other brands on a single jobsite,” he said. “I think that convergence is going to pay off for customers who are looking at their mixed fleet and wanting solutions that work well with one another.”
Praveen Sam, director of offering management, Honeywell Cybersecurity and Connected Industrials, agrees with Olson.
same information built-in systems can provide, making operations easier and more efficient, and allowing for a more comprehensive maintenance plan.
Maintenance is at the heart of nearly all OEM and third-party telematics systems. Connected devices work together to detect problems using a combination of sensors, math, and statistics and industry standards to model when something is likely to break down. Artificial intelligence (AI) is
“Connectivity should be viewed as a pre-requisite for much of the value that will come.” - Edward Olson, product manager, digitalization at John Deere
Honeywell Forge’s line-up of Performance+ analytics systems for heavy construction equipment were designed to be added to machines after purchase. Adding them to older equipment can extend their life while making them part of a connected ecosystem.
“There are multiple ways by which old equipment can still provide necessary data to use advanced software. Sensing platforms allow retrofits on different equipment for connectivity,” Sam said.
Those sensors can provide much of the
also playing a key role in new systems.
Sam says mathematical and statistical methods including AI techniques like machine learning help connected customers anticipate a problem with equipment before it begins.
“These insights allow industrial clients to predict things like, what is the remaining useful life, when could an asset reasonably fail, and other aspects such as energy consumption," Sam said.
"It also enables decisions like how best to produce, how to optimize for reliability
and how to reduce maintenance spend.”
Those insights and statistical models can be added to a client’s database and updated remotely, making it easy to keep up with new developments, even using third-party devices.
Predictions about when a machine might fail will allow operators to schedule planned downtime more easily. More scheduled maintenance means more regular uptime and more dollars saved.
Haver & Boecker Niagara service manager Wilm Schulz says any service tool is most effective when paired with a comprehensive, hands-on service approach. Telematics systems, when used effectively, can also allow operators to easily share data with maintenance and repair technicians, dealers and other professionals who can partner to keep an operation moving.
Some telematics systems can allow a technician to fix a problem without setting foot on a job site, says Olson.
“More recently, remote display access and software reprogramming have enabled remote service calls to successfully fix a customer’s machine without requiring a technician visit at all.”
While maintenance is a big way telematics systems can be used to save money, new technology is making it easier to find the inefficiencies in operations.
Schulz says plant simulation tools offer a high-level view of an entire operation’s workflow. This helps optimize processes and look at opportunities for improvement in both existing sites and new pits or quarries for all mineral processing operations. The software also helps operations spot and fix bottlenecks.
Plant simulation programs take into account the equipment used throughout the plant, from material washers and conveyers to crushers and vibrating screens. The operation’s existing setup, or a proposed setup, is entered into the program to understand and predict overall performance and plant flow. Tools like this are also useful for insights into product specification or production rate changes — such as dry and wet crushing, screening and sorting — and can be used for pre-calculations.
Using math, machine learning and AI to build a better business is the way of the
future, but far from removing the human component, Olson says the machines aren’t replacing human operators yet, but are making their jobs safer instead.
“Safety on the jobsite is continually a focus as we integrate vision systems across more of our machines. Starting with rear and surround view vision systems, progressing through object and people detection, and ultimately assisting the machines themselves to help prevent unwanted interactions,” he said.
Those “unwanted interactions” include SmartDetect systems that alert an operator to possible humans or animals in the vicinity of an excavator, and stop operations immediately if they get too close, improving on operator response time and preventing a possible tragedy.
Ensuring those on a job site are safe in and out of the cab should be a key component of any telematics system being considered. Using connected systems as an additional safety measure makes them a crucial part of any operation, Olson said.
“Connectivity should be viewed as a pre-requisite for much of the value that will come.”

The
breaking boundaries
> Concrete, asphalt, aggregates — you may know the ingredients for a good road, but what makes for a good road recipe?
At the University of Waterloo’s (UW) Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology (CPATT), the cookbook for the future of Canada’s roads is being written, and the not-so-secret ingredient is science.
CPATT is many things, from a training ground for the next generation of road researchers to a crucial touchpoint of Canadian infrastructure, but watching recent CPATT graduate Dr. Rob Aurilio pour a small pouch of aggregate material into a

contraption resembling a futuristic hot dog cart, one recalls a master chef hard at work in their test kitchen.
In moments, a conveyor inside the machine begins moving, and these sprinkles of pebble transform into fist-sized outlines that flash rapidly on a screen outside the device. It’s technology for analyzing the average shape of road aggregate batches, Aurilio explains, and his enthusiastic grin shows that cooking up better roads isn’t just CPATT’s mission, but their pride.
For the past four decades, CPATT has existed as a touchpoint of innovation between the public sector, the private sector and several of UW’s engineering research departments, driving the evolution of roads on the national stage and beyond.
Initially concerned with standard research into pavement health and lifecycle management, CPATT has since grown into an institution tackling hot-button issues like sustainable pavements. Each of its pursuits aim to evolve how Canada looks at its roads.
“What began as finding solutions to the service life and construction of pavements turned into research on the use of recycled and alternative materials and,
little by little, informed all of our findings. Our research has evolved toward more advanced solutions,” said Professor Hassan Baaj, UW’s Norman W. McLeod Chair in Sustainable Pavement Engineering, and the current director of CPATT.
These advanced solutions aim to push the average driver’s idea of what the road beneath their wheels is capable of, including their recent pursuit of developing pavements integrated with artificial intelligence that provides maintenance data and, in turn, predicts the future of the road’s overall lifecycle.
“We brought in artificial intelligence to create our own proactive pavement management system. Having sensors implemented in the pavement that will not only detect if cracks are happening or what stresses are creating them, but coming up with algorithms that will tell us, based on the data, how this pavement will hold up over time,” said Baaj.
The department is also exploring another innovative idea: self-healing pavements. These roads would be capable of repairing wear and tear on their own behalf, removing the need for additional labour or active, in-person maintenance.
“We, along with many other pavement research facilities, do a lot of work on
finding solutions for cracking, as it’s one of the major issues faced by [Canada’s] pavement,” said Baaj. “One question we’re trying to find an answer for is, what if pavement could heal these cracks itself, instead of crews having to return to remove and replace the asphalt?”
For more than 20 years Baaj has been researching — and rethinking — what roads can be. After receiving his doctorate in 2002 in France and returning to Canada to complete a one-year postdoctoral program at the National Research Council, he worked with some of the major international players in the construction materials and paving industries, before ultimately joining the University of Waterloo.
Baaj’s work with CPATT began in 2014. In this position, he helps oversee CPATT’s central lab facilities at the university, their main field test lab, and an additional infield test site at Waterloo region’s waste management facility.
The array of resources that Baaj and his team have at their fingertips supports a number of comprehensive processes, including structural design, advanced

materials characterization, geotechnical engineering, field evaluations, equipment and data processing and risk testing; all of which help place CPATT on the cutting edge of envisioning the future of our roads.
CPATT’s Professor Pejoohan Tavassoti, an assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering who holds the Jr. Norman W. McLeod Chair in Sustainable Pavement Engineering, also recognizes the interdisciplinary toolbox that UW provides and the results it makes possible.
“The beauty of this thing is that you have access to a wide range of technologies and infrastructures here at the university that we’re always trying to leverage in developing solutions that will meet the needs of paving today and in the future,” he said. “For example, if we were developing a material for sustainability, we could collaborate with other professors to look at the environmental impact and assess it from different scales and perspectives.”
The range of resources at CPATT’s fingertips is one of the qualities that brought
Tavassoti to Waterloo as a research associate five years ago from the United States, where he worked alongside of some of the teams leading Superpave research and alongside the US Department of Transportation on recycled asphalt projects.
In addition to his role with CPATT, Tavassoti is a major player in spotlighting sustainability in transportation technology and materials research, currently serving as vice-chair of the Ontario Asphalt Expert Task Group (OAETG) and leading one of two task groups in bituminous binders fingerprinting technical committee for RILEM.
These interests stand in alignment with the goals and concerns of CPATT as a whole, with future-friendly solutions that look to manage roadbuilding’s environmental impacts playing a significant role in the faculty’s current research interests and overall philosophy.
“We have [sustainability] at the core of all of our research projects,” Baaj shared. “It's a very important aspect of our research – it's everywhere, honestly.”
For CPATT, sustainability is a multifaceted idea, one that encapsulates not just the environmental impacts usually associated with the concept, but also solutions that can sustain traffic and weather demands or those which mindfully manage construction material resources.
“We try to keep an eye on all of those well-known pillars of sustainable development and quality, so that whatever solution we come up with is both economically viable and, at the same time, environmentally friendly,” said Tavassoti.
Rising infrastructure demands across Canada have made sustainable, long-lasting roads a valued solution, whether that be in their reduced future maintenance costs or a minimized burden on material resources and supply chains.
“There's a high demand for building more infrastructure, which means more demand for natural resources and construction materials,” Tavassoti said. “But it’s also about optimizing the durability of this infrastructure to avoid any premature failures that you are not planning for,
while at the same time keeping an eye on the impact on the environment, because the scale of these projects only goes up.”
One way that CPATT hopes to redefine the sector’s approach to sustainability is the team’s inquiry into non-destructive testing methods. While standard testing methods for road diagnostics may involve practices that demand repairs, like removing sections for sampling purposes, non-destructive testing methods provide necessary data at no impact to the health of the road.
“Traditionally, one would tend to take cores and drill holes in the pavement for testing, but non-destructive testing, to think about it in terms of the medical world, is like performing a sonography or ultrasound [on the pavement],” said Tavassoti, who currently specializes in this area. “By using a lot of wave-based technologies to map information such as the integrity of the pavement structure, we can get results without being intrusive or invasive.”
Just as integral are the sites and facilities that allow CPATT to, quite literally, put their questions to the test. For Baaj, what defines a comprehensive, state-ofthe-art research facility for paving and road research is more than just the tools; it’s also about technique and, even more importantly, the team.
“In addition to the basic equipment, you need to be able to prepare your mixes, to know your asphalt binders and your cements, and to be able to prepare samples and slabs that are representative to real life – but that's just the starting point,” said Baaj. “It’s so much more than just collecting the data – it’s about having the knowledge and personnel able to understand and translate that data into useful models.”
Even with numerous high-caliber academic faculties at their fingertips, multiple on-campus labs, research partnerships with industry associations, and off-site testing facilities, for CPATT, its most important resource – and the project that Baaj has the most passion for – are the students.
“I think our biggest and most important product is what is called highly qualified personnel. The students we train and prepare to become researchers, engineers and entrepreneurs,” said Baaj. “Half of our focus at CPATT might be conducting research and creating new solutions, but the other half, which really drives the first, is preparing students to
become an important part of this research community.”
Baaj’s motivation is not unnoticed by CPATT’s students, who recognize and relish the privileges that emerge from the lab’s investment in their own research journeys, from cutting-edge contraptions to collaborations with the top minds in their field.
Dr. Abimbola Grace Oyeyi arrived at CPATT in 2016 from Nigeria and is set to start as an assistant professor at the University of Windsor this fall after completing her Ph.D. in December of 2022. It’s the opportunities for mentorship and
collaboration fostered by Baaj and the university at large that brought her across the world to continue her research pursuits.
“We can really leverage the fact that we’re able to collaborate with other departments – for instance, because we’re doing a lot of sustainability research and assessments, we’re able to collaborate with the environment departments, trying to see how we can integrate their research with pavement research,” Oyeyi said. “There’s room for that collaboration at Waterloo, and that’s something I think is really great.”

> Although historic commitments to infrastructure investments and highway overhauls nation-wide may make it seem like there’s plenty of money to be made, rising prices across the roadbuilding and heavy construction industries have made this year anything but a gold rush.
While inflation recovery efforts, including intrest rate increases from the Bank of Canada, have had some impact on the market, recent studies show materials costs are still a concern across the industry.
A report from the Government of British Columbia showed the province’s highway construction costs have increased by nearly seven per cent from 2022 to 2023, the highest in a decade by a wide margin, with Statistics Canada’s Industrial Products Price Index (IPPI) revealing year-over-year price increases in essential materials including asphalt, cement, and diesel fuels.

Annual
The current state of pricing in the heavy construction and construction materials sectors is not a one-factor issue. John Marsicano, senior director at WLW Construction Consulting, says the number of knots that still require untying in the Canadian and global marketplaces is a sign that stabilization is still some time away.
“There's definitely more volatility for this industry right now in as long as I can remember,” Marsicano said.
“I think people need to keep sight of the fact that the current pricing situation is a result of many things, such as the changing global philosophy on carbon emissions, the manufacturing of parts, and labour supply. Until we can get a handle on those globally, I think we’re
going to have this situation for a couple of years to come.”
Though a range of factors are currently adding weight to the scale, Marsicano views the COVID-19 pandemic and the period of disruption it caused to both supply chains and labour operations as an amplifier of cost burdens already felt by the industry.
“Pricewise, everything was already in kind of a boom prior to COVID, and I think that when the pandemic shut everything down, that kind of exacerbated it all,” Marsicano said. “Labour restrictions meant that you had equipment that wasn’t running, and all of a sudden,
you couldn’t back up those costs with production.”
A different kind of boom has occurred in the years following the pandemic’s disruptions, with a need for new housing starts and a sharp increase in infrastructure initiatives and heavy construction projects moving forward across Canada and the U.S. This surge in demand has only put further strain on the availability of materials and equipment, and in turn, the cost of doing business.
“As long as the construction boom continues — and I’ve seen this from the clients I deal with — it doesn’t seem like costs are slowing down, especially since the scale of many of these jobs is significantly larger than they were pre-COVID,” said Marsicano.
Current market conditions and prices make it difficult for this project surplus to be taken advantage of, with the nature of these costs also limiting the ability to take these contracts on in the first place. With factors like ongoing supply chain issues and labour shortages, it’s not only the money, but the necessary equipment and personnel that are in short supply, making it hard to commit to completing jobs. “A handful of clients are in the same boat, where they had equipment issues, and it ends up that it’s quicker to get a new piece of equipment altogether than to get the replacement parts,” said Marsicano. “Another one of the largest issues is that we don’t have enough labour to fill these open slots. There are not enough people that want to do this type of work, so there’s more work than we have resources.”
Marsicano highlighted a need for the industry to think outside of the box, urging contractors to re-evaluate and streamline their processes in adapting to this volatility where they can.
One area he believes the roadbuilding industry can adapt and take advantage of new technologies, is in their usage of alternative and recycled materials.
“That’s one way for roadbuilders to get out of this, is to rethink of ways to use the material, whether that’s alternatives such as recycled materials or a mixture of that with your standard ones,” he said. “It’s about figuring out how you switch gears.”
This need to adopt new perspectives on construction materials extends beyond what’s in the mix. Access to these materials, specifically in Canada, plays a pivotal role in pricing, according to Jason J. Annibale, partner and national co-chair of construction at McMillan LLP.
“For the pricing of materials, the big issue is that it’s all based on source and access. If getting access to these materials and their timely transportation poses a problem, then there’s going to be disruption and price increases,” Annibale said. “In Canada, we’re a large country, so proximity to materials is going to be an issue.”
Market proximity is a major contributor to Canada’s current state of construction pricing, according to Annibale, and its role in this issue has bottom-line implications that impact more than just cost-per-ton and getting shovels in the ground.
“Keeping supply chains local reduces the risk of their disruption and reduces carbon footprint, which is equally as positive,” said Annibale. “The high cost of energy and transportation that we have seen over the last few years, inflation, and high interest rates, these are all intercon nected factors that pose challenges to construction and set the stage for what we now see in the sector.”
The awarding of procurement points for contractors making use of local workers and materials is just one of a number of potential solutions and incentives introduced to encourage accessible supply chains in roadbuilding and infrastructure construction, accord ing to Annibale.
Another strategy gaining traction for addressing price fluctuations during bid ding processes are changes to the terms of the contracts themselves.
In recent years, contractors have aimed to mitigate the risks stemming from increasing costs, supply chain issues and shortages by proposing alternative materials or including price fluctuation clauses in their bid.
"Price escalation or fluctuation clauses are increasingly being used within contracts,” Annibale said. “With the volatility we've seen, there's a recognition in contracts of that volatility, and they are providing for changes, either through specific product substitution or by attaching clauses to the terms of the contract."

Industrial Product Price Index by major product group (% difference between July 2023 and July 2022)

This trend toward contracts that account for fluctuations in pricing and their impact on project delivery has also been noticed by Andrea Lee, partner at Glaholt Bowles LLP, who sees this model as having particular value for the roadbuilding sector.
“The industry at large is already adopting these price escalation clauses, and in roadbuilding, a lot of the contracts are based on unit prices,” said Lee. “So, to the extent that materials and rates continue to increase, if there is a limited form of relief for those unit rates, I think we might start to see more of its inclusion in roadbuilding contracts.”
Lee also shared that over the last several years, most of the contracts she now encounters in her work are built on the Canadian Construction Documents Committee’s cost-plus model; a model that allows contrators to recover the costs of materials, in addition to billing a set fee for time. Those with more flexible pricing options such as the the CCDC5-B contract, are shift away from the standard fixed cost contract type of the CCDC-2.
“I would say within the past few years, most of the contracts that I deal with now are CCDC 5-B,” said Lee.
“That can have a variety of options for what the parties want to come up with in terms of pricing the work, but what I’m seeing in contracts is, for the most part, that parties are agreeing to essentially be more transparent on costs.”
This emerging new standard, Lee said, is a necessity for protecting contractors in an industry climate where not only project costs, but the processes and timelines involved are anything but guaranteed.
“I would say that the number of change requests and change orders on projects that I’ve been seeing are likely higher as a result of the volatility [in prices],” said Lee.
“For contractors, in order to recover from pricing changes, there has to be an actual change in the work — not just on the issue of cost, but also, for example, design changes to the work around material availability or the timeline of the project.”
Despite the rising value of provisional

measures like price escalation clauses and cost-plus contracts, the reality of pricing instability in the sector has left the priorities of owners and contractors at odds with one another.
“For contractors, I think they’re pricing the risk, trying to capture the potential for cost increases in the contract itself," said Lee. "Owners, on the other hand, I’ve seen trying to minimize the ability for contract prices to increase, which includes limiting sizeable contingencies.”
Beyond the terms or numbers on these contracts, Annibale believes that it’s ultimately a collaborative relationship between these owners and contractors, built on mutual transparency and flexibility, that will provide the profitable path forward for an industry feeling the squeeze.
"It's essential to move away from a rigid, positional posture, and towards one that considers the best interests of the project overall,” he said. “That requires a bit of a leap of faith, but if you take that leap, I think you’re putting yourself in a position where you’ll maximize efficiency, limit delays and encourage problem-solving."

When planning for a new aggregate resource development, it is critical for producers to respect Indigenous rights and consider the interests of local Indigenous communities in a meaningful manner. Consulting with Indigenous nations is essential to a project’s success. In fact, consultation and the potential need for accommodation is part of the fundamental law of Canada, imposed by Section 35 of the Constitution. It overrides federal and provincial laws and affects private rights on the property, including land on which pits and quarries operate or are intended to operate. In an ideal scenario, the consultation process would focus on those nations that are most likely to be affected or conduct traditional activities in the vicinity of the project.
Undertaking meaningful consultation and involvement in project development, including potential partnerships, will help achieve “free, prior and informed consent” (FPIC), and makes good business sense by building positive relationships and potentially avoiding costly delays, rejected permits, and legal challenges. In some cases, poor consultation and accommodation can lead to a project being stopped in its tracks.
Before embarking on an aggregate project, one of the first steps is gaining an understanding in the rights and interests of Indigenous nations in the area by identifying nearby communities and their traditional territories, applicable treaties, outstanding land claims and historical use of the area. Early outreach to Chiefs and Councils is recommended. Producers should be prepared to notify them of the proposed project, provide them with timely information, fund some aspect of their participation in consultation, and modify the project to accommodate any concerns.
While planning a project, ongoing consultation can be invaluable to understanding potential impacts on Indigenous rights and interests, environmental and socio-economic impacts of development, and ways for mitigating or accommodating for these impacts. Conducting a thorough environmental assessment and considering Indigenous knowledge will
aid in the identification of culturally significant sites and environmentally sensitive areas. The local Indigenous community will have knowledge of these sites and areas and how local resources are being used by their community members.
Another factor to remember is the potential for resource revenue agreements and other partnerships with the Indigenous nation. Indigenous nations often have established businesses and service companies that can become part of an aggregate operation. By extension, one of the biggest issues facing aggregate producers today is securing and retaining a skilled workforce. Attracting and training of Indigenous workers can aid in solving a producer’s workforce stability requirement and result in a more productive and engaged workforce that have a vested interest in the economic success of their community.
Consultation continues beyond simply securing the necessary permits and approvals to commence operations. Building and maintaining positive relations requires ongoing communication and collaboration throughout a project’s life and even beyond the completion of the project.
Traditional knowledge often plays a role in a site’s reclamation plan. After all, the land will continue to be used after the aggregate resource has been depleted, so producers should seek to align with the needs of Indigenous communities following the completion of a project.
Keeping this general guidance in mind when planning your next aggregate project can go a long way in building positive relationships, ensuring the sustainable development of aggregate resources, and contributing to the well-being of Indigenous communities.
