An official return to a new normal

CONEXPO-CON/AGG back in action in 2023

The CONEXPO-CON/AGG trade show is always one of my favourite events. Taking place every three years in Las Vegas, the show is absolutely massive, and offers anyone active within the construction sector something of interest to check out.

From the thousands of exhibitors to tons of interesting seminars and product demonstrations, and technology showcases, a professional within the construction sector really couldn’t ask for much more.

But to be honest, this coming year’s event feels different to me, and that’s because of how the last one ended.

While attending the last CONEXPOCON/AGG show in March 2020, I remember watching a live stream of a press conference from the World Health Organization where they officially declared the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

Still fairly in its infancy, I don’t think anyone at the show had yet realized the kind of impact COVID-19 would have on our day-to-day lives in the years to come.

I still remember flying home from the event the day after the announcement was made, and sitting in my house under quarantine for 14 days, not entirely certain as to what was going on. I remember going to my local grocery store after the 14-day period, being told to create a makeshift mask (my first was a t-shirt held to my face with elastic bands), and being shocked to see most of the shelves in the store completely empty. I’d never seen anything like it.

The next two years were certainly a strange time.

From my wife and I balancing homeschooling three children with work

meetings and projects, to dealing with lockdowns and school closures, vaccine mandates, travel restrictions, and the protests that followed, it has certainly been a crazy couple of years.

But with all that, I have to say I’m very excited to see another CONEXPO-CON/ AGG on the horizon.

I’m very much looking forward to the opportunity to be back at North America’s biggest construction show, checking out the latest technologies and meeting up with many of the people in this industry I’ve built great relationships with over the years. I’ve missed that face-to-face connection.

Seeing another CONEXPO-CON/AGG coming up is more than just another great event to me this time around.

This time it feels like a return to my new normal. Sure, things are still a little different from the way they were before the pandemic began, but much of our way of life has returned to the pre-pandemic days.

CONEXPO-CON/AGG in some ways signals for me the end of a three-year cycle that many of us would like to forget in many ways. I’m not saying COVID is gone by any means, but it definitely feels more like something we have learned to live with and manage in a return to our everyday lives.

So, for me, CONEXPO-CON/AGG symbolizes my official goodbye to the pandemic, and a hello to my new normal.

My hotel is booked. My flight is confirmed. I can’t wait to get this show on the road again.

Stay safe everyone, and I’ll see you in Las Vegas.

SCREEN MEDIA MAINTENANCE TIPS

Screen

media is a crucial part of any operation’s

profit machine

> As operations begin to slow down in the fall, it’s a great time to re-evaluate maintenance and training procedures to ensure optimum plant efficiency and product quality. Because, when it comes down to it, it doesn’t matter how much material is produced in a day if it’s not meeting spec.

Though screen media is a minor cost when compared to larger equipment in a quarry or mine, it is a crucial part of any operation’s profit machine. One unexpected break and thousands of dollars can be lost in terms of downtime and repairs.

For that reason, producers need to put a larger focus on proper screen media maintenance. Best practices result in fewer changeouts, less unplanned downtime, higher quality product and a more efficient operation.

Here are a few things to consider:

Manufacturers often offer the service either through site visits or via a nearby dealer. The benefit will be a crew with shared knowledge of proper installation that could be worth thousands in unexpected downtime prevention. Photos courtesy of MAJOR.

1. DON’T SLACK ON INSTALLATION

It’s not uncommon for an operation to send the newest crewmember to complete the undesirable job of screen media changeouts, but the task benefits from someone with a bit more experience. The best screen media in the world won’t do any good if it’s installed incorrectly. This could mean improper tensioning or even installing it the wrong way around. The resulting issues can include accelerated wear, panels breaking prematurely, and just overall inefficient screening.

While specifics vary depending on the type of media, there are a few overall best practices for screen media installation. To start, clean and check the condition of components that touch the screen, make sure the screen panel matches what was ordered, and install it based on the manufacturer's instructions. During installation, make sure each support bar touches the screen and that the tension matches manufacturer recommendations.

Consider looking into screen media installation and maintenance training seminars to prolong screen life. Manufacturers often offer the service either through site

visits or via a nearby dealer. The benefit will be a crew with knowledge of proper installation that could be worth thousands in downtime prevention.

2. KEEP AN EYE ON THE SCREEN

Once installed correctly, it’s still best to check screen media at least weekly to make sure tensioning is proper and the panels aren’t showing unusual signs of wear. A little bit of extra time during routine preventative maintenance can have a noticeably positive effect on profits.

While checking tension, also look at the clamp bars themselves. Check for wear, corrosion or cracks and examine the rail for straightness, which is necessary for even tension. Examine all nuts and bolts and replace any that are worn, stripped or corroded. Shaker bolt threads with excess buildup can be cleaned by running them across a wire wheel. Also, replace clamp bars that are thin or caving in to greatly improve screen media wear life and be sure to choose OEM versions.

3. UTILIZE DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS

Diagnostics systems can help prolong media life and improve screening by checking and monitoring a machine’s health. Use a vibration analysis system to inspect the machine for balance and excessive vibration, which can lead to screen media failure or unintended machine wear. Vibration analysis systems are becoming easier to use. Some only require a single, wireless sensor and allows access to results via a smartphone or tablet.

Following basic preventative maintenance practices can mean less downtime, fewer headaches and more profits.

The panel was moderated by Melissa Durrell,

BARRIERS FOR BUSINESSES

The first question posed to the panel was, “What are the barriers today for businesses wanting to reduce their emissions? And what are some of the incentives?”

Albanese said one of the biggest barriers is that many companies simply don’t know where to start. This is particularly true for small- and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs).

“Some of the publicly-traded companies, the larger companies, the larger manufacturers, they have the resources, they have the expertise. They can pull in the right expertise to support them,” she told the crowd. “There's thousands and thousands of SMEs who really are struggling with this. They're struggling with ESG in general, but then also, when you get down to the technicalities of measuring carbon and knowing how to reduce carbon, where do they find capital if they need support to do some type of improvement or by technology?”

Many SMEs are also now being asked by their customers to report and reduce their carbon emissions, so these companies require additional support.

“I would say that there's a large barrier there. There's a lot of incentives coming in, and a lot of directives to report on emissions. But I think we need to think about how to support these companies, how to collaborate across industries. And if you're asking your suppliers, too, how can you support and guide them to the right resources to help everyone achieve the same goal?” Albanese said.

Lennartz added that data collection is a must for understanding what a company’s energy consumption is, and for knowing the related emissions being produced. He added that many of the technologies for helping companies reduce their emissions are still only emerging.

“I think there will be a tipping point where you start to get these large, public facing companies that will stop doing business with companies that aren't doing something about it as they go to try and reduce their Scope 3 emissions in their value chain," he said.

Flynn added that understanding your carbon consumption and your production is really about asking a company

to think about its strategy in a more comprehensive way, and that having tools to help generate these reports will be extremely advantageous.

“I think, for understanding where your supply chain is going to be at a time of climate change, how you're going to measure those emissions, how you're going to report, I think we're going to see companies really benefit from having those answers,” she said.

UNDER PRESSURE?

The panel was also asked if there is currently pressure for companies to commit to Net Zero 2050, and if so, what does that pressure look like?

Albanese said there is a lot of pressure for companies to commit and many companies are coming out with announcements, but that most lack details behind their plans and targets.

“The reality is nobody knows exactly how they're going to get there, because it's just too far out. We don't have all the technology available, but I do think that it's important to set that goal to start on that journey,” she said.

Pooley said that new technologies will be vital for companies meeting future carbon reduction targets, but they need to take a cautious approach.

“We've got to be a little weary if we rush into certain technologies too soon. On the other hand, that shouldn't be an excuse for inactivity. But we've got to keep revisiting technology,” he said.

NAVIGATING EMISSIONS

The panel was then asked about how technological advances will shape carbon markets in the future. Flynn said it's important to start with a conversation on energy efficiency.

“That benefits basically every company. Even if you're a software company, it's going to help; and I think it's really important to measure and understand where your energy needs are coming from,” she said.

No matter what technologies emerge in the future, companies need to be prepared and have the right teams in place to utilize them efficiently.

“I think that we're going to see a lot of really cool technologies come along, I think we're going to see, hopefully, the grid infrastructure improve over the next decade or so. I think the federal government and provincial government will come alongside and do that very systematically, because they kind of have to. And then, I think we're going to have to also ask ourselves, within our companies and organizations, some tough questions about, ‘Do we have the skill set needed?’ and how do we upskill people to be able to make and integrate these kinds of technological questions; but also, [add] people-centric questions into our business decisions on a regular basis?” Flynn said.

LET’S TALK TAILGATES

Key considerations to optimize ROI

> Efficient hauling practices are at the heart of every successful mining operation. Maximizing capacity with each load while minimizing maintenance requirements and unnecessary downtime leads to increased profits and a healthy bottom line.

Many mining and aggregate producers have found simply adding a tailgate to their haul trucks makes a significant impact on their overall efficiency. Tailgates aren’t standard on rigidframe haul trucks from any manufacturer. However, aftermarket options are available from manufacturers specializing in offhighway truck customization.

Like any piece of equipment, adding a tailgate requires careful consideration for optimal results. Some benefits can be achieved with any old tailgate, but to truly enhance their over-

all operation and ROI, producers should look for a tailgate with features that align with their specific application. Let’s take a look at how tailgates can improve efficiency and what options are available.

TAILGATE TO THE RESCUE

For being a relatively simple piece of equipment, tailgates can have a significant impact on how and how much material loader-operators will fill. This underhauling is often unintentional, but usually results in loads that are 10 to 15 per cent below rated capacity. Hauling a half-full load costs relatively the same amount of money in labour, fuel and wear on a truck as a load filled to capacity. By allowing loader-operators to meet the truck’s rated capacity without fear of spillage, tailgates boost an operation’s profitability. For example, a 70-ton-capacity truck with a tailgate hauls its rated payload, which is nearly 11 more tons per load than a 70ton truck without a tailgate. Underhauling costs operations millions of dollars per year. If a fleet of six trucks adds 11 tons to each of their respective 12 loads per day, an additional 792 tons is hauled daily. That equates to nearly $7,049 in profits if hauling aggregates at an average of $8.90 per ton. It’s like adding another truck to your fleet without the increase in fuel, maintenance or labour. Even with a single truck, adding a tailgate can greatly reduce underhauling.

HITTING THE TARGET

Whether it’s increasing productivity or reducing downtime and freeing up equipment, moving material from point A to point B in fewer trips is important for maximizing productivity. This not only increases overall efficiency, but reduces wear and tear on the truck.

Additionally, tailgates further reduce wear and stress on trucks by providing the loader-operator a better, larger loading target. Tailgates allow loaders to safely dump materials in the middle of the body, rather than near the front, improving loading target, weight distribution and overall truck stability. Without the added benefit of the tailgate, loader-operators avoid spillage by placing most or all of the materials toward the front of the bed. This loading technique ends up overloading and stressing the front tires, axles and hydraulic hoist cylinders of the truck, resulting in premature tire wear, body

maintenance and potential axle and hoist cylinder damage.

Typically, rigid-frame haul trucks are designed to carry one-third of the payload on their front axle and two-thirds on the back. Placing heavy materials toward the front puts excessive stress on the chassis, axles, front tires, suspensions and hydraulic systems. Front tires are designed to support 33% of the weight and when overloaded, rim damage may occur, or worse, they blow. Sometimes tires can be salvaged, patched or re-treaded, but even repairs are expensive, costing up to 60% of their original cost, in addition to the labor associated with repairing the tire and equipment downtime. An optimized loading target, equalized weight distribution and reduced spillage means that trucks with tailgates can extend a tire’s service life by as much as 40% or up to 13,000 hours in some cases.

One thing to remember — even if a tailgate makes loading easier, that doesn’t mean loader-operators should overload. A 150-ton truck cannot haul 175 tons of material without operating outside of the OEM truck manufacturers guidelines; this can cause damage and safety hazards in addition to voiding the truck warranty. Squeezing an extra 25 tons in a load might seem like a quick way to bring in extra profits; however, repair costs far exceed the additional revenue if you blow a tire or cripple the chassis and axles. The goal of tailgates is to achieve the trucks rated payload.

MAXIMIZING UPTIME

Optimizing payload capacity and reducing tire and axle wear are only the beginning. The benefits of adding a tailgate extend beyond the truck to haul roads and the other equipment as well. Anyone who spends their day in a mine knows roads are narrow, rough and littered with spillage, which makes them hard to navigate and poses risks to the trucks and other equipment operating at the site. All options for dealing with the challenges result in lost time or increased expenses. Road grading crews deployed to clean debris off haul roads equates to lost productivity and the added costs associated with the fuel, labour and expense of additional equipment. Navigating debris can damage tires as well as the truck’s suspension systems. In

some large mines, more than 200 tires are replaced per month because of debris damage or overloading. Many businesses aren’t equipped to handle the negative impact that has on the overall profitability, especially since the cost of rubber has skyrocketed over the last decade. Most mining truck tires cost upward of $50,000, with some larger models topping out at $100,000. Combine those extra costs with downtime caused by repairs and replacement, and the impact can be devastating. A global tire shortage for mining-class vehicles only compounds the problem with longerthan-normal wait times just to receive replacement tires.

WEIGHING THE OPTIONS

Crunching the numbers, it doesn’t take long to realize the benefits of a tailgate quickly add up. A tailgate enhances operations whether you’re hauling aggregates, copper, coal, iron, gold, oil sands or soupy, viscous materials. But to truly maximize profitability, certain design aspects should be considered before making a purchase decision, such as durability and versatility. There are a variety of tailgate options on the market. Finding

quality and structural integrity. How a tailgate opens is also important for efficiency and long-term durability. A tailgate that lifts, for example, provides increased efficiency over a model that drops down. A dropdown tailgate is sometimes slower when opening and closing and is more susceptible to damage from the dumped materials. These designs often rely on pins or hydraulic systems, and when there are more grease points, cylinders and joints, the risk of increased maintenance and failure exists.

Ultimately, a lifting, scissor-style tailgate has fewer moving parts so there’s less potential maintenance. However, it’s important to ensure these few parts are tough enough for the job since not all tailgates are created equal. A tailgate won’t last long if it can’t withstand the breadth of material being hauled. Find a tailgate that’s built with durable materials, such as high-strength steel, and features strong components including steel alloy chains and fiber bushings that don't require ongoing lubrication. Certain manufacturers design their tailgates specifically for durability, resulting in a tailgate that can take a beating but still lasts for decades with minimal maintenance.

> A tailgate enhances operations whether you’re hauling aggregates, copper, coal, iron, gold, oil sands or soupy, viscous materials.

the design that complements the specific quarry or mining operation is important.

First and foremost, work with a manufacturer that engineers their tailgates for each specific make and model of truck and truck body. Options exist for rigid and articulated frames. Some custom manufacturers have even engineered models that bolt directly to the undercarriage of the off-highway truck. Quick disconnect options, fluidic seals or cushion pads, are customizations that are available and should be considered, depending on the application. Operators should look for designs that do not require any welding to the frame, as welding to the frame of an off-highway truck may invalidate the OEM warranty, while making sure that the brand they choose offers stability,

Customizations to tailgates are also a way to tie them into the truck fleet methodology employed at any given site. Truck bodies frequently have sideboards that add height onto the sides for either added volumetric capacity or to keep material within the bed. In this case, having the tailgate built up to the height of the sideboards creates a unified height around the entire bed, as opposed to a high-sided body with a low-sided tailgate.

Adding cushion pads to a tailgate will soften the blow when it is raised and lowered in harsh worksite conditions. When operations have extremely bumpy haul roads, or when mining underground, the cushion pads minimize noise and increase the tailgate service life and other truck components.

Operations that haul large amounts of wet material arguably need a tailgate more than any other operation that uses offhighway haul trucks. In these applications, a tailgate with a fluidic seal can create a near-perfect seal, resulting in minimal fluid leakage during transport. Few manufacturers can contain 100% of the liquid material, but manufacturers with years of experience have engineered designs that can contain up to 99.5% of wet materials.

For operations that require a 100% positive seal, there are specialty tailgates available from select manufacturers. These designs build up the rearmost portion of the truck body or container to create a cohesive flange from which the tailgate compresses. Two hooks on either side of the base of the flange intercept a corresponding tag on the tailgate, allowing the tailgate to pivot inward as the sidearm and overcenter locking mechanism compressively lock the rear tailgate into place. This creates a water-tight seal that contains liquid materials within off-highway truck bodies or roll-off containers.

Finally, make sure the tailgate lifts high and fast enough to get out of the way before material starts to unload. The last thing you want is the tailgate to hold back the material during dumping rather than allowing it to flow freely out of the back of the truck body. Fast dumps lead to increased efficiency and productivity. Materials left behind in the bed or stuck in grease points damage hinges and overall structure, and the amount of carryback reduces volume of the next load.

OPTIMIZING ROI

Increasing volume, reducing maintenance and maximizing hauling efficiency, a tailgate can make a big difference. Six 100-ton-capacity trucks with tailgates hauling ore could result in approximately $10,700 in additional profits per day. Even with the average tailgate cost between $22,500 to $30,000 — based on the size of haul truck and options chosen — a producer purchasing six tailgates for his 100-ton truck fleet would see a complete ROI on a tailgate project purchase in less than 17 days with those numbers. And that’s based on profit alone. Factor in additional fuel and tire cost savings associated with the use of tailgates on a truck fleet and the numbers really start to add up. Pay for tailgates once and reap the benefits for the truck fleets lifetime.

Drones are earthmovingbenefittingoperations

Drones – the aerial eye of the jobsite – have become a very versatile tool for earthmoving operations. Among the benefits, increasing efficiency, productivity, and accuracy on jobsites. In addition, drones help reduce unplanned costs and rework throughout a project by providing a steady stream of jobsite progress data.

As drone technology evolves, the greater the return of investment in employing them, points out Zach Pieper, director of operations and co-owner of Quantum Land Design, an industry leader in managing and preparing 3D data required for construction projects of any scale. “That is why is it important for those in the construction industry, especially in earthmoving, to learn about using drones.”

“Drones are another tool contractors can put in their toolbox to make more efficient and better decisions,” Pieper says. “There are many situations where a contractor might need to keep track of how much earth is being moved, compare the current site to the planned site, and figure out how many yards of earth still to be moved and where that dirt must go. Drones can be a very cost-effective way to do that.

“Drones can also provide a very rich layer of data that can be added to your knowledge of a project and your ability to manage it properly.”

When it comes to drones, Pieper says there are two types of contractors.

“One group I call drone curious. They think drones are interesting and they need to be learning about

them,” Pieper explains. “The second group are those contractors that already have drones and feel they are not utilizing them as well as they could be. Or they bought a drone for a single purpose, which it is serving well, and they want to get more use out of the information collected. Or they want to get ideas on how to better use their drones on jobsites.”

The How to Utilize Drones in Your Earthmoving Business education session at CONEXPO-CON/AGG will cover the high-level basics of drones, including types of drones, applications, the kind of data you can get out of drones, and basic data collection procedures.

“The session applies to nearly any size contractor,” points out Pieper. “It will be an information-dense way to learn how you can use drones to make better decisions with your contracting company and on each jobsite.

“It will be focused on applied technology. Everything in the education session will be information that any contractor can take back to their company or their jobsite and put it to work.”

Submitted by CONEXPO-CON/AGG. Held every three years, CONEXPO-CON/AGG is the must-attend event for construction industry professionals. The show features the latest equipment, products, services and technologies for the construction industry, as well as industry-leading education. The next CONEXPO-CON/AGG will be held March 14 to 18, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nev. For more information on CONEXPO-CON/AGG, visit https://www.conexpoconagg.com.
