HOW MUCH ARE YOU CHARGING?
Results from our 1st national survey on charge-out rates and business conditions. BY

SUPPLY CHAIN AND STAFFING CONCERNS
Welcome, this marks HPAC magazine’s first-ever nation-wide Charge-out Rates Survey, and we were delighted to receive over 150 responses from HVAC and plumbing contractors from coast-to-coast.
As you will see, the participating companies represent a valid reflection of the industry in Canada, with almost 60% of our respondents representing contracting companies with fewer than 10 employees and 97% with under 75 employees. Our intent with this survey is to capture a snapshot of the industry and share a barometer of how services are being costed across the country and discover how contractors are adjusting to post-pandemic business conditions and current economic realities.
We aimed to make the results of the survey as visually appealing as possible, with some informative commentary thrown in here and there. And among the results you will discover that over three-quarters of our respondents take on apprentices, and that the pandemic hasn’t had too much of an effect on our survey takers ability to keep apprentices under
their wings. Also, more than a quarter of our respondents cited no change to company revenues since the pandemic began, and over 43% report an increase in revenues since March 2020.
We fielded our survey over the month of May, 2022, and if there are a few things this process has taught us, it’s how businesses are seeing a clear shortage in product availability and higher product pricing. Respondents also indicated the challenge in attracting more skilled workers, an ongoing dilemma for the skilled trades.

Industry Snapshot
We wanted to start our survey by “painting the picture” with some demographic details of our respondents. Participants represent every province across the country except PEI (maybe next year), with Ontario leading the way with roughly 55%. Of interest, 24% of the plumbing/ HVAC contracting businesses represented have been around for over 40 years, while 15% of our responses were from companies that have been around for 10 years or less. All of the contracting companies are involved in service/replacement jobs, while 89% also provide work on new construction. And 84% of our respondents represent non-union businesses.
