18 th Annu A l h AC Convention & t r A de Show n ovember 8-10, 2013 vA n C ouver , B.C.

HAC Chair’s Welcome

thank you for joining us here at the vancouver Convention Centre for hAC’s 18th General Meeting, training Forum and trade Show. Bienvenue à tous!

this will be our first convention in a full fall format, and it promises to be our largest ever, in almost every way. this year’s convention will have our largest training and professional development program, our largest trade show, and our largest assortment of speaker series programs. You will see a number of other significant changes this year too.

Your surveys from previous conventions have indicated that you wanted to have more training, and you wanted to see the committee meetings protected from other convention events, in order to provide a better opportunity for members to attend. we have compressed the committee meetings slightly to avoid some conflicts with other convention programs.

this year, your association has developed a series of programs that focus on new membership services – and we have developed courses to help you implement the new services. training Agreements, draft employment Contracts and Averaging Agreements, a new hAC Group health Benefits Program, to name a few, all are aimed at helping you operate more efficiently and at a lower cost. it is important to appreciate that these programs were developed as a result of your survey input and with the volunteer assistance of operator members and Associates like yourselves. A number of courses are being offered at no cost.

don’t forget to attend the session led by Martin eley and Fred Jones. the session has become a fixture of the hAC program and it is a crucible for emerging regulatory issues in our industry the Chair’s reception, the After hours event, and a new Skidz Bar will round out the social dimension of the event.

on behalf of the hAC board of directors, i encourage you to enjoy the convention. i want to invite you to speak with me or any of the other board members in the hall or in the bar, particularly if you have any comments on hAC’s activities or ideas for new programs and services. we all know these are challenging times, and your association is looking for new and innovative ways to assist. only with your assistance and input can hAC continue “Bringing the industry together.”

Mission-specific helicopter modifications enhance your capability while also improving safety – and they can also decrease your maintenance costs. Around the globe, hundreds of helicopters are flying vital missions using Heli-One modifications, including operators who provide offshore services, search-and-rescue, emergency medical services, and military and law-enforcement protection. Heli-One designs and certifies an extensive array of helicopter modifications and repairs for airworthiness jurisdictions around the world.

As the world’s largest independent helicopter support services company, safety is our number one priority. We believe that to give our customers the service and safety they require, we need to understand them, whether they own a single helicopter or a large fleet. We build robust support solutions for our customers – with the aim of maximizing safety, optimizing mission readiness and minimizing total cost of ownership. Our commitment to customer service is second to none. Industry-leading maintenance practices, advanced training programs and cutting-edge technology are at the core of all that we do. Leaving you safe in the knowledge that we're up there with you.

HAC President’s Message

i would like to add my welcome to Sylvain’s. this year’s convention and tradeshow promises to be our best ever. t here’s a larger tradeshow, more professional development courses, more parties . . . and Sergei Sikorsky, too!

i wanted to take a moment to pay special tribute to our corporate sponsors and convention sponsors who have contributed generously to this year’s convention. we couldn’t do it without you.

t his is our first full fall format convention, and it bodes well for the future. By most accounts, this was a bit of a lackluster operating season, but we are pleased to see that many operators are still prepared to come out to support the convention. i am certain that it will not disappoint. Please take some time on the tradeshow floor to support our valued associates and exhibitors . . . and enJ o Y!!!!

d on’t miss the after hours event at the brand-new B lACKB ird Public h ouse and o yster Bar t his promises to be an exceptionally enjoyable event!

i f you have any comments on this year’s convention, please stop me or one of your Board members. Your feedback drives changes to h AC’s convention format, so please make your views known!

Supporting Helicopter Operators

Born in n ew York in 1925, Sergei Sikorsky grew up in Connecticut watching his father, aviation pioneer igor Sikorsky, build the famous Sikorsky flying boats and “Clippers” for Pan American Airways and other customers around the world. he remembers his first flight, when he was about eight years old while seated on his father’s lap in the co-pilots’ seat of a twin-engine S-38 amphibian.

h e also remembers visits to the Sikorsky home by the l indbergh family, Colonel “Jimmy” d oolittle, Captain “ e ddie” rickenbacker, and many other aviation greats. From 1939 onwards, he followed the development of the first successful Sikorsky helicopter, the v S-300, and flew in it as a passenger, with his father at the controls.

d uring the Second world war, he served in a u .S. coast guard, helicopter development squadron at Floyd Bennett Field. h e participated in the test and demonstration of the earliest helicopter rescue hoists, litters and baskets, and flew in some of the first helicopter search-and-rescue missions near the end of the Second world war.

Following the Second world war, Sikorsky studied at the university of Florence, i taly, and then joined u nited Aircraft (now united technologies) in 1951.

Forty years of international helicopter marketing and manufacturing assignments followed, during which he lived in Germany, Japan and France. h e flew many types of aircraft for business and pleasure in e urope, holding at one time or another, American, i talian, French, German and Swiss pilot licences.

After the end of production of the Sikorsky C h-53 transport helicopter for German Army Aviation in 1975, he returned to the Sikorsky Aircraft plant in Connecticut.

Since retiring from Sikorsky Aircraft as vice-president, special projects, in 1992, he remains active as a consultant. h e has received a number of aviation honours and awards. he is fluent in French, German, i talian, russian as well as english. his hobbies include flying, aviation history, target shooting, painting and classical music. h e is married to d utch-born e lena van Mechelen and has a grown son, Sergei Jr
