HAC Chair’s Welcome

Welcome to HAC 2012!

Thanks for joining us here at the Ottawa Convention Centre for HAC’s 16th Annual Convention & Trade Show. HAC’s convention program is bigger and better, with a more expansive professional development program and our largest eastern Trade Show ever. With more than 80 exhibitors, you’re sure to find what you are looking for if you are coming here to connect with some of your suppliers.

Our pre-convention courses include a range of training and professional development options, and we have populated our list of speakers largely in response to issues that have been raised with HAC in the last year including: FDM, Averaging Permits, Flight & Duty Times, Understanding the Oil & Gas Audit Process and more. You spoke to us, and we listened.

Our Trade Show is evolving. Virtually all our sessions are under the same roof as the trade show and we have modified the format to respond to the needs of our valued exhibitors, Associates and Corporate Sponsors.

Ottawa provides us with a unique venue for our Convention that offers us better access to our parliamentarians and our regulators, and a chance to raise the profile of our industry and emphasize its important place in the aviation community and as an engine for the Canadian economy.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to welcome all of you to the Convention. I encourage you to enjoy the show and invite you to speak with me or other Board members if you see us in the hall or in the bar, particularly if you have any comments on HAC’s activities. Only through an open dialogue can we continue, “Bringing the industry together.”

TERI NORTHCOTT HAC Chair

HAC President’s Message

Welcome to the show! Whether you are here for the Trade Show, or the Professional Development Courses or just for the party, you won’t be disappointed by HAC 2012. Spend some time on the Trade Show floor with our valued exhibitors. Make a bid or two at our Silent Auction and participate in some of our sessions, and certainly make plans to attend the Chair’s Reception, and the GALA at the Chateau Laurier.

I wanted to take a moment to pay special tribute to our Corporate Sponsors and Convention Sponsors who have contributed generously to this year’s Convention. We couldn’t do it without you.

Ottawa is a great place to visit, and let’s not forget that Saturday night is St. Paddy’s Day. Our Byward Market is normally a crazy place to visit on a Friday or Saturday night, but if you are looking for a nightcap after the GALA and you are feeling adventurous, then the Market is the place for you.

They say, “An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.” I must say that I am feeling a bit of both on the eve of the 2012 Spring season. There is an upbeat feeling running up to this year’s convention, and operators are quite optimistic. Even the pessimistic ones are telling me, “It’s always darkest before the dawn, so if you are going to steal your neighbor’s newspaper, that’s the best time to do it…”

In any case, enjoy yourself and welcome to the Show!

CLOSE OF CONVENTION

Luncheon Speaker

Appointed president of Heli-One in June of 2011, Alexandre has extensive leadership experience in aerospace manufacturing and MRO. The former CEO of Sagem Avionics, a member of the Safran group of companies, Alexandre has also held leadership positions with Turbomeca as COO of that company’s businesses in the USA, Canada, and Brazil, as well as Teleflex’s aerospace division.

He has an impressive record of driving cultural change in the companies he has led around the world, with a unique focus on lean deployment as an enabler for change. He has successfully led initiatives globally to increase synergies between business units, reduce inventory, improve productivity and reduce lead times, while relentlessly driving customer focus and satisfaction into every process of the organization.

In the Jan./Feb. issue of Helicopters magazine, Alexandre said prior to joining the Heli-One team that he was surprised to learn how much business actually came from outside CHC.

“I underestimated the amount of work that Heli-One does for third parties, meaning outside of the CHC fleet,” Alexandre said. “Today, it’s about 40 per cent of our revenues, and in the next 18 months, it will most likely represent more than 50 per cent, considering CHC’s growth.”

“I like to joke with my team that I do nothing, but I do it well,” the self-effacing Alexandre also told Helicopters. “I’m not an expert in anything, but I’ve kind of touched every piece of the business, from the commercial side to the operational side. What I enjoy the most, especially in the past seven years in the CEO or COO role, is to have my finger on the pulse of every function in the company and make it all work together. That’s the fun part.”

Alexandre’s arrival at Heli-One is part of a refocusing of the core operations. One of his first steps was to announce the sale of Heli-One Composites, located in Gander, N.L. He notes that while the manufacture and repair of composite materials is a viable and growing segment of the aerospace market, “it’s not our core business and HeliOne does not want to compete in that area.”
