OUR MISSION
Although our mandate is always evolving and being considered by the board of directors, the Helicopter Association of Canada’s primary objectives currently focus on five key areas, including:
• To promote a political and regulatory environment that will foster a prosperous helicopter industry;
• To educate member, civil servants, and the general public about issues important to the industry;
• To promote the continued enhancement of flight safety;
• To develop expanded utilization of helicopter transport at all levels of Canadian life; and
• To exchange maintenance practices and common issues among members.
BY THE INDUSTRY – FOR THE INDUSTRY
HAC is governed by a Board of Directors composed of nine Directors – seven Directors are elected from our Operator-membership, and two are elected from our Associates. They serve as volunteers for two-year terms. Our current Board members include:

WHAT WE DO
ADVOCACY: Operators and pilots often believe that new regulations are the product of an edict by Transport Canada. In most cases, new regulations are the product of extensive consultation that takes place with the helicopter community –through HAC. Even if you don’t have time, HAC is representing your interests to government. Most times, we are able to find a reasonable way forward through our discussions, but sometimes the industry has to stand up and fight, too. Our battle on Flight & Duty Time limits is the most recent example of HAC’s willingness to vocally oppose regulations, when the consultation fails, and the new rules simply don’t make sense for our industry.
AWARENESS: We educate and inform the public, and decision makers on the value of the Canadian commercial helicopter industry; a $2.7 Billion sector that employs 8,900 Canadians.
GOVERNMENT LOBBYING: We work to influence government policy and their legislative agenda to promote a healthy regulatory and economic climate that will foster the growth of the commercial helicopter community in Canada.
ENHANCING SAFETY
HAC’s Committees have produced a number of Industry Best Practices in the core of areas of helicopter operations, including; Heli-Skiing & Mountain Flying Training; Helicopter Onshore Seismic Operations; Utility Flight Operations; Class D Operations; Pilot Competencies for Helicopter Wildfire Operations. The genesis for this work, and the heavy lifting that brings it to fruition, occurs through our HAC Committees, composed of operators like yourself.

HELPING YOUR BUSINESS
With the assistance of Emond Harnden LLP, HAC has released a number of EmploymentRelated Business Templates, including Template Employment Contracts for Full-Time Employees; Contractor’s; Fixed-Term Employees; and a Guide to applying for an Averaging Permit. HAC has also released a Template Training Agreement.
HAC has the Canadian aviation community’s largest annual tradeshow, where we put Operators together with their customers and industry suppliers.
HAC is working with its committees to help resolve the critical labour shortage in our industry. The shortage of pilots, engineers, and the skilled trades is constraining growth in our industry.
HAC’s Convention & Safety Forum is the largest aviation convention in Canada. It’s a chance access industry education, advance safety, and reconnect with your suppliers – all in one place.
COMMUNICATIONS
HAC publishes a steady stream of Bulletins to ensure that our Operators and Associates are constantly up-to-date on the activities of HAC and the issues affecting their interests.
If you have trouble navigating your way through the complex maze of regulations, or if you run afoul of Transport Canada enforcement, you can contact HAC’s President & CEO for guidance. He has spent more than 20 years developing his career in the helicopter industry in primary pilot and executive roles. If your legal problem has industry-wide implications, you may be eligible to apply for financial assistance through HAC’s Legal Defence Fund.

Raising the Bar for Industry Employees: Each year, at its November Annual Convention & Safety Forum, HAC delivers a variety of Professional Development Courses, including Crew Resource Management (CRM); Managing your Costs & Profitability; Implementing a Fatigue Risk Management System for Small Operators; Long-Line Boot Camp; Marketing Advice that Works; CASO Courses, to name only a few.
Finally, HAC membership is an investment in your future and an investment in the future of the helicopter industry. Together we are stronger –and we need the whole industry behind us. Right now, our members account for over 80% of the commercially operated helicopters in Canada – but we need YOUR support, too. Membership dues are proportional to the size and number of helicopters you operate.
