Ray Roussy began developing sonic drilling technology three decades ago in his backyard

Ray Roussy, a mechanical engineer from Surrey, B.C., took home a coveted $10,000 Innovation Award from the Ernest C. Manning Awards Foundation for developing one of the fastest drilling systems in the world.
Roussy’s sonic drilling technology, which he began developing in his own backyard nearly three decades ago, is in use on six continents and gaining worldwide recognition, especially as an environmentally friendly alternative.
Today, Roussy’s sonic drill is commonly used to quickly install geothermal energy loops, provide continuous core samples for environmental investigations and explore possible mineral deposits.
“There is a critical need for more innovation in Canada – Canadians need to create and commercialize innovations to compete in the global economy,” says Bruce Fenwick, executive director of the Ernest C. Manning Awards Foundation.
The foundation, which is named after the former Alberta premier, has provided more than $4.2 million in awards, celebrated 225 adult and youth award winners and had more than 2,500 nominations in its 29-year history.
“I think its versatility is what makes the sonic drill a leader in its field,” says Gary Whitesell, owner of Alberta company Crater Lake Drilling. “It is the most multi-functional piece of equipment I have ever seen in the drilling industry.”
Roussy is president of the contracting company, Sonic Drilling, and the U.S.-based Sonic Drill Corporation. He is also co-owner of the manufacturing company, Sonic Drill Systems. The companies employ more than 50 people in Chilliwack and Surrey, B.C. Overall company revenues are $8-10 million annually.
GeoSmart enerGy raiSeS fundS durinG ‘movember’
The men and women at GeoSmart Energy made the leap in 2010 from making people’s lives more comfortable to helping save lives. As active participants in Movember, a national fundraising campaign for Prostate Cancer Canada, the small but passionate corporate team has successfully raised more than $6,000 for the cause, building awareness and generating greatly needed funds for prostate cancer research.
The men of GeoSmart raised a significant amount of money for prostate cancer research by growing moustaches during ‘Movember.’
“Every 18 minutes a man dies from prostate cancer,” says Robert Longphee, GeoSmart Energy’s director of communications and captain of the company’s Men of Movember campaign team. “This was an easy cause for us to rally around because we recognized that that ‘man’ could be someone’s husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin or friend – it really hit close to home.”
The family-oriented corporate team readily signed up at the beginning of November to become Mo Bros or Mo Sistas. Movember challenges men (Mo Bros) to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache over 30 days. Mo Sistas provide encouragement and support.
“We’re grateful to our family of geothermal and solar dealers and renewable energy suppliers, who, along with family, friends and colleagues, have enthusiastically supported our team with their donations,” says Longphee. “It’s gratifying to see so many people pitching in to generate awareness and funds for this important cause.”

It is with great sorrow that we report the passing of Elwood Laidman, proprietor of Elwood Laidman Plumbing and Heating of Binbrook, Ont., and a past vice-president of the Ontario Ground Water Association (OGWA).
Laidman passed away peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital, on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010. He was 82 years old. The beloved husband of the late Betty Laidman (nee Kinsman), and dearly loved father of Larry (Agnes), Lloyd (Elle), Valerie (Michael Haslam) and the late Noreen (1984), he will be dearly missed by his loving grandchildren Holly Laidman (Jens), Brandon (Laura), Steven, Ryan and Brent and his great-granddaughter Nicole. The dear brother of Lenora (Ron Young) and brother-in-law of Jack (Marion) Kinsman, Joan (Ted Shelley), and the late Richard (Dorothy) Kinsman, Elwood Laidman is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Elwood and Betty Laidman founded the family business Elwood Laidman Plumbing and Heating in 1954. A longtime and dedicated

The Canadian GeoExchange Coalition (CGC) has announced the release of an extensive statistical report entitled “The State of the Canadian Geothermal Heat Pump Industry 2010 –Industry Survey and Market Analysis.” The document is available on the CGC website at www.geoexchange.ca.
The CGC says the new report is the first document ever published to present a comprehensive, credible picture of the Canadian geoexchange industry. Although shared knowledge within an industry is the key to improve best practices and guide legislators and regulators, industry knowledge is also essential to governments, utilities and financial institutions to develop programs adapted for the needs of customers and of the industry.
After thorough and ongoing research over the past five years, CGC staff has found that the vast majority of analysis of or within the industry is based on self-referential reports or even hearsay.
“Policy makers and program developers therefore essentially based their work on unverifiable data and sources. In short, no statistically valid data has ever been published on the Canadian geothermal heat pump industry. As a result, industry stakeholders
and government officials lacked the key, strategic information they needed to develop new programs or adapt existing programs,” said Denis Tanguay, CGC’s president and CEO.
The report shows that the Canadian geoexchange industry has experienced phenomenal growth in the past five years. The market for ground source heat pumps grew by more than 40 per cent in 2005 over 2004, and by more than 60 per cent annually in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Despite harsh economic conditions, the CGC estimates the market grew by an additional five per cent in 2009. Some analysis and comparison with U.S. markets is included in the report.
“Thanks to the market transformation initiative developed and deployed by the CGC from 2005 onwards, with the strong support of Natural Resources Canada, the industry now has many reporting mechanisms to collect key market information. In turn, CGC itself has built and maintains in-house capacity and capability to manage extensive databases and complete comprehensive and accurate geoexchange market analyses,” added Tanguay.

the nGWa expo brings the entire industry together
for those in the ground water industry, the National Ground Water Association’s (NGWA) annual Expo is hard to beat as a destination.
Not only is it a chance for ground water professionals to see the latest in gear and equipment, but the educational opportunities are simply unequalled anywhere else. The 2010 NGWA Expo took place Dec. 7 to 10 at the Las Vegas
Convention Centre in Las Vegas, Nev. We took the opportunity to speak to many of the Canadians exhibiting at and attending the show. In general, the consensus was one of optimism.

“It’s always a good show for us,” said Sarah Belshaw of Solinst Canada, noting that they take significantly more orders at the NGWA Expo than at other shows the company attends.
Doug Secord, a technical sales representative for Alberta-based Foremost, mentioned something similar when talking to Ground Water Canada, and added, “Our international sales have been very strong this year.”
Perhaps the spirit of the NGWA Expo can be summed up best by Gary Boshart, president of Boshart Industries. “This show has been excellent,” he said. We can’t help but feel that many of the attendees would agree.

The event got underway on the morning of Nov. 15 with breakfast and an opportunity for attendees to visit the accompanying trade show. This was
followed up with opening remarks by CGC president Denis Tanguay and the keynote address by Denis Durand. Although the schedule allowed

for a short networking break after the keynote address, attendees were soon back in their seats for the first of many education and technical sessions.
Attendees had a choice of two topics for the first session: “Policies and regulations in the GSHP industry,” moderated by Don Bergler of Terasen, and “Research & Development,” moderated by Omer Lemay of HydroQuebec.
“Policies and regulations in the GSHP industry” consisted of three segments. Phillipe Dunsky of Dunsky Energy Consulting filled attendees in on overcoming capital costs and unleashing GSHP demand through innovative financing. Dunsky was followed by Miche Lamanque of Natural Resources Canada, who spoke on recent changes to the national energy code for buildings. Finally, Denis Tanguay of the CGC spoke on the effectiveness and efficiency (or lack thereof) of the current codes, standards and regulations.
The “Research & Development” stream consisted of two presentations. They were “Integrating Geothermal into Hydronics” by Mike Miller of Uponor Canada, and Amine Yahiaoui of CanmetENERGIE’s study of two system configurations: direct expansion and CO2 with phase change.

Victaulic has developed a clean EPDM gasket compound that may reduce microbial growth in reverse osmosis (RO) systems. According to the company, the gasket does not contribute to microbial growth that can clog membranes, thereby reducing costs and plant downtime due
to maintenance and replacement of filtration media.
“Although there are multiple causes of membrane biofouling, we think we’ve made significant strides in the elimination of one of those causes,” says Jim Renner, vice-president of water system technologies with Victaulic.
The development of the new gasket compound was a result of research conducted by the Victaulic research team, which revealed that gaskets commonly used in RO systems can contribute to membrane biofouling through the introduction of nutrients that feed microorganisms. The clean EPDM compound eliminates all possible organic nutrients that support microbial growth and cause membrane biofouling. The new gasket may reduce microbial growth by up to 75 times that of commercially available gasket compounds that are currently being used.
“Our research was originally focused on potable water systems in Europe and Asia,” says Catsy Lam, product engineer with Victaulic. “However, elastomeric materials such as gaskets, seals and O-rings with wetted surface areas are also present in reverse osmosis systems – notably in couplings connecting the header pipe to membrane pressure vessels – so we realized our findings would have broad implications for RO system operators as well.”
Victaulic’s research consisted of testing various commercial and R&D gasket compounds to evaluate microbiological resistance using three quantitative methods: biomass volume (W270), mean dissolved oxygen difference (MDOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Based on the results, the researchers identified ingredients that do not support microbial growth, and optimized a new compound using those ingredients.
“We’re constantly striving to improve gasket performance,” says Renner. “Our dedicated team of material scientists and engineers will continue to research the effects of gasket compounds in RO and potable water systems, with the goal of developing the most technologically advanced products available.”

Sonic Drill Corporation has engineered and released a
sonic drill rig that can fit into a 20-foot shipping container.
“We constantly heard from clients that they wanted a physically smaller machine with the same horsepower that could be used in small spaces,” says Tom Savage, president of Sonic Drill Systems, the company that also manufactures the larger Sonic Drill Corporation rigs.
“The SDC-350 has the same award-winning technology and exacting engineering standards but applied to a crawler rig on tracks that can easily fit within a 20-foot shipping container. This latest model also reduces the cost of shipping by two-thirds.”
Sonic Drill Corporation says that with its smaller size, lighter footprint and lower price, the launch of the SDC-350 has created a buzz with buyers who previously thought a sonic drill rig was out of reach.
The new model drills through a variety of formations to more than 250 feet, using water for flushing. It can handle drill tooling up to eight inches in
diameter and tilt up to 60 degrees. Powered by a CAT sixcylinder diesel engine, the SDC350 produces 173 horsepower [129 kilowatts] at 2200 r.p.m. With its smaller size, the SDC350 can be towed behind on a variety of platforms, remain street legal and, in most cases, be driven by someone with a lower class driver’s licence. One of its many applications is environmental core sampling.
The Sonic Drill Corporation is also planning the upcoming release of the SDC-390 – an even more powerful version of the SDC-350. Although the SDC-390 will be heavier, the company says it will offer the most powerful sonic drill head on the planet.

over the past three or four years, home and business owners across the country have benefited from an influx of federal and provincial retrofit grants supporting geothermal installations. But just as quickly as they arrived on the scene, the federal grants have come to an end and some provincial grants will be expiring at the end of March in 2011. So what does this mean for the geothermal industry moving forward? It means it’s time to get back to the basics.
Long before financial incentives, geothermal technology was selling itself strictly on its own merits – with the industry increasing at a rate of 23 per cent in Canada and a slower rate of nearly 10 per cent in the United States. Some might argue that the recent grants made it affordable in the eyes of consumers, but home and business owners were investing in this technology long before this support was available, and they will continue to do so in the future, simply because the technology makes sense.
Geothermal technology isn’t new. It’s been marketed residentially for more than 30 years. And it’s from the past that we can take our lessons for the future. I can’t think of an alternative energy technology that sells itself better than geothermal. It works every day of the year on demand whether or not the sun is shining or the wind is blowing. With energy costs continuing to soar, geothermal makes more sense as an energy alternative than ever before.
The energy cost savings can often pay back the initial investment in as few as five years. A home or business owner’s return on investment could be anywhere from 15 to 25 per cent.
