CAST 2026:

The breeding trends shaping tomorrow’s bench

The 2026 California Spring Trials weren’t just a showcase of new colours and novelties; they were a preview of where genetics are heading. Across annuals, herbs, and perennials, breeders signalled clear shifts in priorities, ranging from climate resilience to retail‑ready novelty. Several trends stood out, each pointing to how growers will be producing, scheduling, and selling plants over the next few seasons.

1) COLD TOLERANCE IS A COMPETITIVE TRAIT

Cold performance used to be a bonus; in 2026, it’s a battleground. Breeders are designing genetics that let growers push earlier turns, reduce heat inputs, and survive unpredictable springs (especially here in Canada). With CitraNova Petchoa (1), BallFloraplant introduces citrus‑bright colours paired with genuine cold tolerance as well as the breeder’s New Bee Petunia (2) which is noted as being unfazed by 2 to 4°C production. ThinkPlants and Syngenta teamed up to introduce Lavender Scent Mini Blue (3), which boasts first‑year bloom from seed in a compact form that fits spring racks. This shift signals a future where “cold‑ready” becomes as standard as “uniform habit.”

2) DISEASE RESISTANCE IS BASELINE

Growers aren’t asking for disease resistance anymore as they have come to expect it. Breeders responded with genetics that remove

chronic pain points without compromising appearance or flavour.

PanAmerican Seed’s (PAS) Monteverde Genovese Basil (4) possesses high Downy Mildew resistance while maintaining a true Genovese flavour. Hishtil’s new Salvia Ovalvet (5) has strong resistance to powdery mildew while maintaining its ornamental and culinary attributes. PAS’s signature Beacon Impatiens line known for its DM resistance, introduced a long missing pink colour (6) to the series in 2026. Darwin Perennials’ DayScape series of Hemerocallis (7) brings rust resistance to a daylily that also self‑cleans and reblooms, proving that disease‑proofing is expanding into core perennial classes.

The message is clear: resistance is no longer a feature, it’s the baseline.

3 SEED-PROPAGATED SPECIALTY CLASSES ARE GAINING GROUND

perennial classes crops that behave like vegetative stock, with uniformity and predictable timing even if they’re grown as annuals or seasonal programs in Canada.

Benary has introduced its eye catching seed propagated Emerald Surfer Dichondra (8) that boasts more than 85 per cent germination and tidy trailing habit. HilverdaFlorist’s Melodiva Gerbera (9) is a seed gerbera with near‑synchronized timing, capable of delivering 90 per cent of the crop ready the same week. Schoneveld’s new Gaultheria series Ciao Bella (10) is a first in the breeding of a F1 hybrid from seed that will give uniformity in the crop. It’s available in both white and red berry forms for Christmas sales. Seed‑propagated perennial‑type crops are becoming a more efficient, programmable option for Canadian growers — even when they’re not garden‑hardy across the country.

4) NOVELTY PETUNIAS ENTER THEIR CHLOROPHYLL ERA

The biggest visual story at CAST wasn’t

a colour, it was chlorophyll. Breeders are exploring green margins, transitions, and bi‑colour effects that feel genuinely new.

This is particularly evident across Danziger’s Petunia Amazonas Series (11) which features chlorophyll rims that shift into purples and pinks. Westhoff’s aptly named Frogger White Petunia (12) has white petals with green margins for instant retail impact.

This is novelty with staying power: distinctive, photogenic, and surprisingly production‑friendly.

5) SMART ALTERNATIVES & MIX - FRIENDLY FILLERS

Breeders continue to refine foliage and structural crops that behave better in mixed containers, offer cleaner habits, and solve long‑standing production challenges. The focus is shifting toward genetics that deliver function (controlled vigour, pollinator value, or non‑invasive behaviour) without sacrificing retail appeal.

Westhoff has added a new gold coloured Callisia called Dragon Scales

(13) to its Fancy Fillers program that promises controlled vigour. Meanwhile, PanAm’s Always Sunny Sunflowers (14) are pollenfree but nectarproducing, giving growers a structural, pollinatorfriendly option that works in containers, patio programs, and cuts. Kientzler’s Muhlenbeckia Golden Girl (15) features small golden leaves and could be a suitable replacement for the trailing chartreuse lysimachia in mixes.

Breeders are clearly prioritizing cleaner, better‑behaved structural crops. Expect this push for mix‑friendly, non‑invasive genetics to accelerate over the next few years.
