Top picks for 2026
U of G's Rodger Tschanz highlights the new blooms set to capture growers’ attention
BY GREENHOUSE CANADA

Earlier this year, University of Guelph greenhouse technician and sessional lecturer, Rodger Tschanz, travelled to California for the 2025 spring trials on behalf of Greenhouse Canada. While there, he previewed the new plant genetics from breeders from across the globe and assessed their use in Canada. Upon his return, Rodger sees how many of these plants perform as he prepares the trial gardens at U of G and Landscape Ontario’s head office in Milton. We’ve asked Rodger to weigh-in on his early impressions of these new varieties and to consider what he thinks will be the standouts in 2026.
1)
NESIA PINK CRUSH NEMESIA
This is a new unique bicolour that’s an early bloomer with flowers that last. Danziger’s NESIA series also has more heat tolerance than other nemesia on the market. Rodger says: “I am impressed with the performance of this plant in both the greenhouse and the landscape. Its compact habit is maintained throughout the production cycle and garden centre marketing phase. In the landscape, it continues to bloom and presents itself in a compact upright way. Throughout the summer heat so far, it looks great.”
2) HANNABEE DIGITALIS
The genetics for Hanabee comes from the Panther digitalis that was released from American Takii a few years ago. It should be treated like an annual as it will unlikely survive the winter. Rodger says: “This collection of three colours of first-year blooming digitalis from American Takii is looking as great in Ontario as it did in California. It has a compact habit suitable for 16” containers; at the time of writing this article in mid-summer, it has been blooming for three weeks and is producing more flowering spikes with a promise of more to come. Garden performance is great as well.”
3)
FANATIX SCAEVOLA
This is a true upgrade and redo of Syngenta Flowers’ scaevola assortment with brand new genetics. Fanatix has better branching, flowers on top of the plant and an earlier flowering habit
than the old Bombay series. Rodger says: “The new Fanatix scaevola series from Syngenta Flowers appears to be performing as promised with excellent heat tolerance. I like this plant a lot in our container trials where the blooming is highly visible.”
4) RAINBOW DRAGON BERRY CALIBRACHOA
The calibrachoa Rainbow series from Dümmen Orange has expanded with three new additions to make it a true grower series. It will include eight colours for the 2026 season. This series is unique in that multi-coloured blooms are produced on one plant. Rainbow Dragon Berry is the most colour changing of the series. With this cultivar you get the equivalent of a Confetti Garden mix arising from one plant. Rodger says: “This plant displays a wide colour range as the bloom ages and in response to different temperatures during bloom initiation. It a very attractive addition to mixed containers.”
5) BEACON IMPATIENS, BLUE PEARL
PanAmerican Seed’s Impatiens genetics are known for their high resistance to powdery mildew and this new Blue Pearl colour is a new breathtaking addition to the Beacon lineup. This variety boasts strong branching and consistent, season-long colour. Rodger says: “There’s just something about that colour that attracts my eye.”
