GE to sell Distributed Power business to Advent for $3.25 billion
GE (ge.com) has signed an agreement to sell its Distributed Power business to global private equity investor Advent International for $3.25 billion.
The transaction includes Distributed Power’s Jenbacher and Waukesha engines, as well as manufacturing sites in Canada, Austria and the U.S.
Distributed Power is a provider of reciprocating gas engines, power equipment and services focused on power generation and gas compression at or near the point of use. The Distributed Power business had sales of $1,317 million in 2017.
IMELCO announces Supplier Awards winners and new chair
IMELCO (imelco.com), a member-owned group of electrical wholesaler organizations from across Europe, Australia, Russia and North America, conducted its 2018 annual meeting in Frankfurt, Germany in June, where members recognized 2018 Supplier Awards program winners.
Based on the assessments of distributors worldwide, winning companies were honoured in the following areas:
• Overall performance excellence: Schneider Electric
• Highest overall improvement: Prysmian Group
• Best sales effort: Ledvance
• Highest improvement in digitalization: ABB
Also at the meeting, the IMELCO Supervisory Board elected Robert (Bob) P. Smith, president and CEO, IMARK Group (U.S.) chair of IMELCO.
Smith will serve in this position from June 2018 to June 2020. He replaces
Simon Barkes, ANEW, U.K., who concluded his term as chair.
Stelpro employees run to raise money for the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation
Stelpro recently donated $17,675 to the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation after its 11th consecutive participation in the Grande virée des sentiers (for a donation total of nearly $190,000 over 11 years).
On June 10, 70 employees crossed the finish line after participating in a race that supports children in need.
Stelpro donated $250 to the foundation for every employee who crossed the finish line. Every year, the company also supports children through a $2,500 Grande course des enfants sponsorship.
Siemens to acquire smart IoT systems provider Enlighted
Siemens’ Building Technologies Division is acquiring Enlighted Inc. The financial terms have not been disclosed for the deal, which is expected to close in Q3 2018. Enlighted (enlightedinc.com) will be managed as an independent legal entity and wholly-owned subsidiary of Siemens Industry Inc.
Enlighted provides an IoT (Internet of Things) platform for commercial real estate, which consists of multi-function sensors, distributed computing, and its own network and software applications. Additionally, the platform promises reduced energy use, improved space utilization, better environmental management and greater asset utilization.
New SolarHomes Program helps Nova Scotians save on energy bills
The Nova Scotia government recently revealed the SolarHomes Program to help Nova Scotians save money on their electricity bills by installing solar panels. Under the program, administered by Efficiency Nova Scotia (efficiencyns.ca),
homeowners will receive a $1 per watt rebate, or roughly 30% of the installation cost of a solar electricity system. The average rebate will be about $7,000, up to a maximum of $10,000.
Funding comes from the Government of Canada’s Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund. The province is investing $3 million a year for four years to support the fund.
New Brunswick government commits $10 million for nuclear research cluster
The New Brunswick government has committed $10 million to help establish the province as an R&D leader in the field of small modular reactor (SMR) technology.
The funding will help the New Brunswick Energy Solutions Corp. develop a nuclear research cluster in the province.
Energy and Resource Development Minister Rick Doucet said the province’s existing nuclear infrastructure and expertise makes it well-placed to play a role in the growth of this sector.
The provincial government and NB Power (nbpower.com) are partners in the development of NRCan’s roadmap for small modular reactors.
Stanley Black & Decker adds Irwin and Lenox brands
Stanley Black & Decker Canada recently added Irwin Tools and Lenox Tools to its Global Tools and Storage Group. The company acquired the two brands in a transaction completed in 2017.
Irwin Tools (irwin.com) is a manufacturer and distributor of professional hand tools and power tool accessories.
Lenox (lenoxtools.com) has over 100 years of experience in cutting technology, offering products like reciprocating saw blades, hole saws and drill bits.
IEEE launches Empower a Billion Lives competitionglobal
IEEE (ieee.org) and the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS, ieee-pels.org) have opened registration for the Empower a Billion Lives (EBL) global competition in which where teams will propose economical and sustainable energy access solutions to energy poverty.
