ASIS president outlines major challenges facing security
By Neil Sutton
DaveDavis, the 61st president of ASIS International, opened the organization’s annual conference Monday with an address that urged security professionals to be leaders in difficult times.
Orlando, the city hosting ASIS’s conference this year, was the site of a terrible tragedy earlier this year when a gunman took the lives of 49 people at the Pulse nightclub.
“As recent events have demonstrated, we are facing an unprecedented threat against the world’s soft targets,” said Davis at the conference’s opening ceremony. “These attacks tear at the fabric of communities where the world’s citizens work and play.”
In response to the Orlando shootings and other terrorinspired tragedies around the world, ASIS launched a “Security Week” to coincide with the conference, offering best practices and free resources to small businesses who wish to learn more about security, safety and preparedness.
“It is incumbent upon us as security professionals to give back to the communities that support us,” explained Davis during his address. “What’s driving this increase in attacks is the confluence of self-radicalization, social media, violent extremism, mental illness and other factors.”
Davis also spoke of challenges facing security professionals when it comes to preparing for worst-case scenarios, particularly when they are so unpredictable and random.
“It is now becoming more difficult, as in the case of the Pulse nightclub gunman, to ascribe specific motivation for attacks. We need to call upon our skills as security professionals — observation, investigation, interviewing, and due diligence — like never before,” he said.
Davis also reflected on security’s relatively new role in combatting the ever-increasing presence of cybercrime. He
said that traditional security professionals will find themselves increasingly accountable should their organizations experience a cyber-breach. According to Davis, ASIS research indicates that few security departments are ready for these challenges in terms of providing a holistic approach that can “deal with cyber, physical, personnel and information risks.”
The Internet of Things should also be on every security professional’s radar, he said, and “opens incredible risk, which is only hinted at in news stories.” Davis cited recent examples where benign hackers have been able to demonstrate their ability to access the internal systems of aircraft and cars.
Davis also reflected on the changing world of work, where Millennials are increasingly part of the labour force and will occupy an estimated 50 per cent of roles by 2020. “We have a duty to get them up to speed. You will have to work to keep these highly mobile workers engaged and demonstrate that their talent is valued.”
Women, traditionally underrepresented in security, are coming to the forefront, said Davis, and filling more senior leadership roles. Women are “more transformative, collaborative and empathetic than their male counterparts,” said Davis. “Their day is coming.”

Pelco refocusing approach to market
By Neil Sutton
Pelco’s CEO is in the midst of transforming some of the company’s major business practices and re-targeting its efforts on key verticals.
Sharad Shekhar came to Pelco about a year ago as the result of a senior leadership search. His previous leadership roles included major business transformation in the automotive sector — manufacturing, sales, marketing, strategic direction — and he is bringing those skills to bear at Pelco.
the expectation is that the company will be able to significantly improve its forward momentum and time to market.
Sharad Shekhar, Pelco
The thrust of this new approach is Pelco’s focus on five major markets: Gaming, city surveillance, oil and gas, and air and sea ports. Shekhar says Pelco’s market approach has been too broad in the past, addressing more than 20 verticals. By narrowing that focus,
“We’ve made some pretty significant journeys in the last year,” says Shekhar, speaking during the ASIS International exhibition in Orlando, Fla. “Those have been, from both a product and market perspective, how fast we bring our products to market and how reliably we do that. That means living up to our commitments to the market. It’s been a very hard transformation, but I think it’s one that we are proud of now.”
The five markets will not be to the exclusion of all else, says Shekhar. The company will continue to make its products available to customers from all markets, but its major efforts, including future product development and channel and partner relationships will be geared towards growth opportunities. Of the
five identified, Shekhar sees plenty of potential in all of them. He expects, however, oil and gas will grow the fastest and smart cities will represent the biggest overall gains.
The list was developed in part through consultation with integrators and other partners. “When we gave them the list, they weren’t surprised, they were actually happy about it,” says Shekhar. “Now they know what to expect from Pelco. It’s a more focused message.”
The company is also looking to ramp up its relationship with its parent company Schneider Electric. Schneider currently accounts for about eight per cent of Pelco’s sales. Shekhar plans to double that in the next 18 months.
As for the broader transformation, Shekhar feels Pelco is about at the halfway mark — at least in the short term. “That process will never be over,” he says.
U. of Phoenix offers scholarships
By Neil Sutton
International’s best know awards program at its annual conference may be the Accolades bestowed on exhibitors but there are many other recipients who are recognized for their diligence and ambition.
One such program is carried out in partnership with the University of Phoenix, Ariz., which bestows 10 full scholarships on ASIS members each year.
The majority of scholarship recipients this year are from the U.S., with one winner, Victoria Ogbuehi, hailing from ASIS Chapter 273 in Abuja, Nigeria. Last year there were two Canadian winners: Steven Slade, a lead technician from integrator Contava and Tim Pritchard, a London, Ont.-based area manager for G4S Canada and member of ASIS Chapter 24, Southwestern Ontario.
of the workload of a full degree, on top of a full-time security career, quickly sunk in. “It’s thrilling, but it’s also scary,” he says. “I’m not 20 anymore; I’m 30-plus years into my career. I’m going, ‘My goodness, I’m about to become a student again.’”
Pritchard is now in the second year of his chosen program at the University of Phoenix, a bachelor of science in security management with a certificate in crisis management. The reality
Pritchard does not take the opportunity lightly. He says the education will pay dividends as he plans to advance his security career. “I’m not ready to retire any time soon,” he says.
Now in its fifth year, the scholarship program was recently renamed the Jeff Greipp Secure Your Future Scholarships. Greipp, who was a senior director at the university, was instrumental in the creation of an Enterprise Security Comptency Model for ASIS International over a three-year period. He passed away in 2015 after a battle with cancer. Greipp’s wife Melissa says her husband was a strong proponent of higher education and professionalism in the security industry. “He was fascinated with the security industry because of his law background and saw the importance of the security industry nationally and globally,” she says.

Vidsys unveils next phase of PSIM
By Neil Sutton
Vidsys founder and CEO James Chong says his company is moving PSIM to its next stage of evolution.
PSIM, or physical security integration management, has often been billed as the ultimate tool to manage and co-ordinate security information from multiple sources like video, access control, perimeter solutions and other data points. Chong says PSIM debuted about 10 years ago, but the market is now ready for a leap forward using a technology called CSIM — converged security and information management.
More than just an aggregator of physical security information, CSIM encompasses a wider variety of systems, including IT and electronic security as well as other data generated by traffic management, building automation systems, social media, etc.
“CSIM is an evolution of PSIM,” explains Chong. “When we charted a 10-year roadmap, PSIM was the base, focused on the physical security market . . . Our next level was CSIM. CSIM takes what PSIM does but broadens that to
include the IT side and cyber side, as well as the nonsecurity information management.”
At the ASIS International 2016 conference in Orlando, Vidsys demonstrated a Safe City GSOC (global security operations centre) using CSIM technology as its core. Vidsys launched the solution at the conference along with multiple partners: Hikvision, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, Salient Systems and Viscount Systems.
“Our partners … believe that where we see the market headed is also where they see the momentum building,” says Chong. “That circles around the concept of a Safe City as part of that solution set. What we’re talking about is smart transportation, smart security, smart buildings, smart campus — the smart elements that are necessary.”
CSIM is most immediately appliable to municipaltiies but could also be used by any large facility with complex needs such as university campuses, large health-
degree of expertise is required to deploy a CSIM solution, adds Chong. Some of the large national and multinational integrators possess that knowledge, he says, but size is not the most essential element. Beyond the physical requirements to install cameras and access control, the heart of CSIM is software. “We’re starting to see a lot more capabilities even in the smaller partners,” says Chong. “At the end of the day, for software, you don’t need a lot of people — you need people who know how to install software.”
Tyco sees post-merger advantages
Bill Maginas was appointed president of Tyco IFS, the company’s Canadian arm, about three months ago, and is now part of the postmerger process with its new parent Johnson Controls.
The merger was first announced on Jan. 25 and was completed the first week of September. Some of the details of what the joint operation will look like have not been revealed, and it may take some time before the two organizations are fully integrated, but senior managers are pleased with
the early results. At a briefing held at the JCI booth on the ASIS exhibition floor, Bill Jackson, president of building efficiency, and Brian Young, SVP, global enterprise sales, said the back-end integration process is going faster than expected, and the two sides are already exploring crossselling opportunities.
As president of Tyco IFS, Maginas is eager to take advantage of these new opportunities. While the synergies between security, fire and HVAC may be self-evident, it’s not enough to just
put a portfolio together and hope for the best, he says.
“Just jamming the companies together isn’t what’s going to be the value proposition,” he says. “It’s the actual value we create by having all three systems (security, fire, HVAC).”
Creating that value for the end user means helping them get to a point where they can benefit operationally, adds Maginas.
“It’s kind of like that computer you buy from the store. It’s got an operational system that’s there, and as you become a tenant you plug things in that you need. Those are the things that I think we’ve got to get to,” he says.

March Networks provides audit tool in the field
Ottawa-based March Networks introduced a new Security Audit tool to help systems integrators evaluate and improve the security of their video installation configurations. The Security Audit capability, now available in March Networks’ GURU Smartphone
Application 2.3, automatically analyzes and rates how secure the configurations of installed March Networks 8000 Series and March Networks RideSafe GT Series hybrid video recorders are, based on a list of industryrecognized points of weakness. The tool then provides guidance on how to make a configuration more secure, such as changing a password that’s been left at the default setting or closing ports that don’t need to be open. Technicians can act on the recommendations to further harden the system, and email a report to themselves, a supervisor or a customer for
future reference using their smartphone or tablet.
Schneider Electric utilizes BACnet for integration
Schneider Electric announced enhancements to its AccessXpert security management system at ASIS 2016. The enhancements allow facility managers to integrate security and building management systems via the BACnet communications protocol. AccessXpert uses Cloud-based technologies to provide mobile access to video surveillance, intrusion detection, access control, alarm management and other systems. AccessXpert uses open standards to merge security with Schneider Electric’s SmartStruxure building management system (BMS). According to Schneider Electric, with the new BACnet integration, organizations can share encrypted information between their building management and security systems to gain efficiencies and manage emergency situations.
Princeton Identity, which was recently spun off from parent company SRI International, demonstrated its biometric identity product lineup at ASIS 2016. “The market has a growing understanding of the importance of identity as the foundation for both physical and logical security,” said Mark Clifton, CEO, Princeton Identity. Booth visitors saw the IOM Access Control Tablet, which fuses access control readers, keypads, intercoms, cameras and more as well as the IOM Biometric Tablet, a fully mobile tool that is protected by an iris reader to prevent unauthorized usage and can be used for biometric enrollment functions including multimodal iris and facial recognition capture.

Bosch showcases integrated technology
Bosch demonstrated its integrated systems during ASIS 2016, highlighting technology such as intrusion detection, access control and IP cameras. According to the company, its G Series Control
Panels can interoperate with the Bosch VMS to achieve facility security and automate certain functions. As an example, presenting authorized access control credentials will automatically unlock doors, disarm the intrusion detection system and turn on the lights. Control panels and IP cameras can also be integrated with the PAVIRO Public Address System to provide added security in locations housing high value assets. Dual authentication may be required to disarm a specific area — when combined with video analytics and audio announcements, stakeholders are able to increase to an appropriately higher level of security in that area. Bosch also highlighted the role of audio in the event of an emergency, notifying personnel of a situation through pre-recorded messages.
Sharp debuts security robot
Sharp Robotics Business Development (SRBD), a division of Sharp Electronics Corporation (SEC), debuted the Sharp INTELLOS Automated Unmanned Ground Vehicle (A-UGV) at ASIS International. The A-UGV is a multi-terrain, mobile sensor platform that can capture video, audio and environmental data. According to Sharp, Unlike remote control robots that require a trained, human operator, the A-UGV is a self-directed robot, which navigates on the ground without a human driver. The company says the data provided by the A-UGV can be used to enhance outdoor surveillance, security, safety and maintenance inspections. “Over the coming months, we will continue to run customer trials and share case study findings,” said SRBD’s Cliff Quiroga. “Channel partners and security integrators are taking orders now.
