asis 2015: role realignment

Discussions shift at the annual exhibition as attendees look for added value from vendors

There was a trend a few years ago toward what came be to known as a virtual trade show.

When travel was curtailed for a lot of businesses for safety or budgetary reasons, they were hailed as a reasonable substitute for the real thing. The benefits are clear from a time and money perspective but there’s no real substitute for face-to-face interaction and the unmistakable advantage that

comes from “being there.”

What has changed, at least in the security world, is the emphasis on what represents the real draw of a conference like ASIS International. Some attendees lamented that there was no discerning wow factor or major breakthroughs at the annual seminar and exhibition, held this year in Anaheim, Calif. But that may be part of a broader trend in security: hardware devices like surveillance cameras are not the draw they once were and their innovation is now iterative rather than revolutionary.

for

“I do get a little bit disappointed, because the majority of the floor is taken up with camera technology,” says Owen Key, CSO and CISO for the City of Calgary. “We’re looking for innovation that goes beyond the cameras and gets us business value.”

But the trade show continues to be a valuable experience for Key because the business value he’s looking for is there — it’s a matter of discovering it and asking the right questions, he says.

“If we’re looking at analytics on a camera, it’s about heat mapping, it’s

The exhibit floor may have lacked a wow factor for some, but there were ample opportunities for in-depth discussions on what customers are looking
and how vendors and integrators should be addressing their needs.

about vehicle and people counting, it’s about giving us information that we can use for more efficient services,” he says.

“I think I’m still looking for innovation with these vendors on integration pieces. That’s why I like coming to the show.”

Brian Claman, director, national security and life safety services, commercial property management group, GWL Realty Advisors, notes that neither he, nor the consultants that he met with during the show, found anything “revolutionary or groundbreaking” on the show floor. He did, however, find the trip to be worthwhile.

Of particular interest to Claman were social media mining and scanning solutions. They are popular with both law enforcement and media organizations, he says, but also have huge potential for commercial real estate managers.

“It allows an operator to establish a geo-zone around an asset and look at a demonstration during, let’s say a G20 type event, or a riot and get a real time flavour of what’s being said on social media in proximity to that asset,” explains Claman.

“Alternatively it’s an investigative tool to proactively look at threats that may be manifesting themselves on Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr as they occur so you can plan the appropriate defences.”

Claman says he tries to attend the ASIS conference every year. While the education portion is always appealing, he says his participation in that aspect of the show has diminished over the years largely because the exhibits continue to be a draw.

“The trade floor is very, very interesting and time-consuming and we use it as an opportunity to meet with vendors and partners. I was really tied up quite a bit with meetings and just walking the floor,” he says.

Words like that are music to the ears of the exhibitors who devote so many resources to making their booths appealing to ASIS attendees.

Ottawa-based Solink exhibited at ASIS for the second time in 2015, doubling their booth presence over

last year. The company introduced a SaaS-based (Software as a Service) fraud prevention tool at the show, which they say drew considerable interest from attendees. “We didn’t see a lot of other companies offering what we were offering. That actually attracted a lot of high quality traffic to our booth,” says Christoper Beaudoin, director of marketing.

“We had some really good conversations,” adds Mike Matta, Solink’s co-founder and CEO. “In general, the conversations that we’re having year after year are becoming more valuable to us.”

Who those conversations are conducted with at a show like ASIS can vary widely, he says. End users coming from smaller firms may wear many hats, including physical security, IT systems, loss prevention, etc. If they belong to a large company, maybe they’re in charge of just privacy or risk.

But Solink isn’t necessarily pitching a security solution in the traditional sense. “We don’t approach the market as a security vendor, we approach the market as a data vendor,” says Matta.

In fact, Solink’s website prominently features the tagline “Be data driven not incident driven.”

“People came to us with use cases:

this is the data that lives in my universe and these are the kinds of decisions that I want to be able to make. How can Solink help me? We would have conversations tailored to their specific needs,” says Matta.

Key says he wishes more vendors would take this kind of approach: listen to customer needs rather than simply presenting a product release schedule. “It’s not as prevalent as I would like to see,” he says. “I would like to see vendors take a little more initiative in talking to CSOs.”

But overall, the experience of ASIS was a good one for Key. He says he gets value from the education sessions, particularly since ASIS has a partnership in place with (ISC)², the organization that administers the CISSP certification.

“One of my information security analysts is down here with me,” says Key. “We attended a couple of the sessions ourselves and actually got some good value out of it — two or three areas that we want to take home and implement.”

Beaudoin says shows like ASIS have become must-attends for companies like Solink and they remain one of the best means to reach out to customers. As he puts it, “You have to be there, because that’s where everybody is.”

with tracy long and peter redfern, tyco integrated fire & security canada

racy Long, president of Tyco Integrated Fire and Security Canada, took a few moments during the busy ASIS conference to speak with Canadian Security magazine. Long, who was also joined by Peter Redfern, commercial sales leader, discussed her career at Tyco, up to and including her presidential appointment two years ago, as well as how the integrator’s relationships with its end user customer base have changed.

canadian s ecurity: how long have you been at tyco?

tracy long: I’ve been at Tyco since 2009. Before this (current role), I was leading one of our products divisions — our sprinkler products division — a $600 million global product line. Then I came over to the installation and service part of the business. I used to deal with widgets and now I deal with people. All 2,000 of them. It’s been a completely different experience.

cs: what skillsets do you bring to your current role as president?

tl: It was a larger role than just coming into the security industry. It’s really combining our fire and security business. I think they wanted someone with the business acumen — I have an MBA and I worked in management consulting. I think that was one of the key things that they were looking for — someone who could bring that together, understand the synergies from a cost side, but more importantly from a commercial side. So… How are we going to be able to leverage the security customer base to be able to sell our fire products, and our fire customer base to sell our security products.

cs: are there any challenges you’ve had to face thus far in the role?

tl: The first year that I was here, the end of 2013 and into calendar 2014, it was a banner year. We grew a lot. We outperformed. I think our customers were at a high point in their infrastructure spending. Not as much on the security side, more on the fire side.

This year, we’ve seen a lot more security spend than we did the year before, but we’ve seen things slow down on the fire side a bit. It’s been really interesting managing both. Sometimes

one side can be up when the other is down. I think we’re in a challenging place in the market in Canada. I do think that the price of oil and the foreign exchange rate is impacting more than just gas and mining right now, which to us is a significant part of our portfolio, so we’ve had to look to other verticals to make that up. But I think now it’s starting to trickle into government spending, bank spending. I do think it’s having a Canada-wide impact.

cs: how are your relationships with customers evolving?

tl: I think it’s really important that all of our sales professionals be able to have intelligent conversations and be able to work with not just the security department and IT but also procurement. You have to be able to manage that with your customers and understand what’s important to each of those functions and be able to show why your solution meets their needs.

peter redfern: The customers’ buying process is becoming much more intelligent. They’re raising the bar for all integrators, relative to what they expect. Not only their expectations, but the accountability around their expectations. That’s a growing trend.

tl: It’s just as important that we have our finance team on board when we’re trying to sell a big solution, because invoicing is so important to our customers and to their procurement teams. We get service level agreements around invoicing so we have to come to the table with an integrated approach like that as well. [And it’s] all the way through from RFP to execution. I think that procurement and IT are having just a big a stake in the game in terms of security solutions and fire solutions within their professional organizations.

boon edam conducts tailgating survey

Boon edam has conducted a comprehensive survey of security professionals revealing more than 70 per cent of respondents believe they’re vulnerable to a security breach from tailgating. More than half value the cost of a breach at $150,000 to “too high to measure.” Despite the threat, only 15 per cent said they currently track tailgating incidents regularly. According to CeO Mark Borto, C-level interest in security entrances has evolved from “early adopter” to “early majority” phase, and investment in security revolving doors and mantrap portals are expected to increase significantly to more effectively combat tailgating.
