asis 2014: robots and big data

The annual conference and exhibition embraces the future with innovative solutions

Security, had a goal in mind at ASIS International: identify new technology that would be useful to both customers and staff. In particular, he sought patrol verification solutions. “It’s a key thing for us to improve our unity of software or applications. I think the opportunity is to integrate one good platform to replace several that we have in the field right now,” says Cooper.

With a trade show as large as ASIS International — which drew approximately 19,000 people this year — its success depends upon whom you ask and what they were hoping to accomplish.

Attendees are there to attend education sessions, network with friends and colleagues they may only see once or twice a year, scope out new technology on the exhibit floor and visit with clients. For many this year, integration and connectivity were watchwords.

The security industry is trending towards openness and interoperability, notes G4S Canada’s senior vice-president of sales and marketing Tim Saunders. G4S, while still primarily known for its

guarding operations, is participating in that trend, says Saunders, as evidenced by its presence at the ASIS International 60th Annual Seminar and Exhibits, held this year Sept. 29 – Oct. 2, in Atlanta, Ga.

“Traditionally we would have primarily had the guarding business represented at the booth. This year, we had technology, we had our risk compliance business. I thought that married well with the theme of the show,” he says.

“That whole ecosystem of integration I found to be very much alive and well at the show this year. People were genuinely interested in our technology and our risk compliance business and our guarding business,” adds Saunders.

Fraser Cooper, chief technology officer at Vancouver-based Paladin

Cooper devoted the majority of his time in Atlanta to this endeavour, but he was also able to spend time connecting with clients and surveying other solutions that may prove useful in the future. He says he always likes to take some time to visit the smaller booths tucked away in the corners of the exhibit floor.

Those companies may be dark horses today but any one of them could be a household name in security tomorrow. “There’s more companies getting into the business, I think — more start-ups, more international players coming in,” observes Cooper.

He adds that he noticed a trend towards “Big Data” solutions at ASIS this year. Companies — both the well established and newcomers — are trying to figure out how to aggregate, analyze and present information in meaningful ways.

“Companies were offering services where they collect data from everything from news feeds, from police dispatches, from Twitter and everything else and

Analytics and data management tools took centre stage this year at the annual ASIS conference

bringing it all into individual feeds that they can provide to a customer. I thought things like that would be pretty interesting for us,” says Cooper.

While the industry is looking for ways to capitalize on the Big Data movement, there were still plenty of “traditional” security technologies available. One that caught the attention of some attendees is a perimeter solution currently in field trials from Carp, Ont.-based Senstar. The company is testing what is aptly called the RoboGuard — a robot device mounted to a monorail system that can be deployed along a perimeter. The robot can detect and intercept a would-be trespasser, travel at speeds up to 30 km per hour and even issue voice commands.

“It really did create a buzz,” says

WKen Ribler, executive director for Northeast Regional accounts at Senstar. Something of a showcase piece (the product was one of ASIS’s Accolades winners for 2014, see p. 11 for more details), the RoboGuard also helped draw people to the booth, giving the company a means to discuss its other solutions.

“There seemed to be a much greater interest with all of our perimeter solutions,” says Ribler. “I think RoboGuard helps people to understand perimeter [security] in a way that’s very overt.”

Ribler has worked for Senstar for just over three years, but has had a relationship with ASIS International for much longer. He served in the U.S. Air Force until 2008 and currently sits on the military liaison

council for ASIS, which looks after the interests of active duty members of the military as well as veterans.

“I derive a different type of reward working with council activities as a volunteer,” says Ribler. “We have representation from both the public sector and the private sector. It makes us unique in that way. I think it’s a nice pairing together.”

Ribler also serves on a selection committee that screens educational sessions offered at the ASIS conference. He says he’s seen ASIS develop over the years, both in terms of the education it can offer and as a showcase for constantly evolving security technology. “We work very hard and do a very good job to make sure we have the best.”

with mahesh saptharishi, cto, avigilon &Q a

hile at ASIS 2014, Canadian Security had the chance to speak with Avigilon’s new chief technology officer, Mahesh Saptharishi, who joined the company when Avigilon acquired VideoIQ earlier this year. Saptharishi discussed the role of analytics in security and Avigilon’s contributions to its development.

canadian security: how are analytics being used in a security context?

mahesh saptharishi: Big box retailers will want to detect shoplifting, but that’s just part of the story. The bigger part of the story is the majority of people are coming there with benign intent. They want to purchase something. You want to understand their activity; you want to understand how many people came into the store. There are all these different pieces of information that we can provide, not necessarily as a real-time alarm but as reports that people can look at. What we’re providing is this capacity to be able to better use information in different ways. Security is the start — that’s the reason why people buy our system, but we also want to make sure their investment is future-proof.

cs: there’s a clear case for retail, but where else would it be applicable?

ms: Retail is focused on understanding customer behaviour, but there are other markets where the operational intelligence aspect is just as important. They want to understand how often certain parts of their facility are trafficked because that would imply that there are certain decisions that you can make in terms of heating and cooling decisions, building management decisions, lighting

control. If you’re offering certain services, like in a city, you want to be able to decide when you want to do garbage collection in particular part of the city. All that information can be gathered. It’s similar to business intelligence, it’s just that the data are interpreted differently and used for different purposes.

cs: are people adopting analytics for these purposes?

ms: The focus for us has been squarely on security. There are plenty of folks who have taken that security application and are using it on their own for other things like business intelligence. We want to make that more of a concerted effort for us looking into the future.

cs: how much of your future development is security versus other applications?

ms: We don’t want to vertically specialize. If you look at the market today, 20 per cent is enterprise, 20 per cent is really the low end part of the business and 60 per cent is really the mainstream. Those are the guys who see the premium value of our products and see the cost benefits of our products, and we want to be able to hit that broad base as effectively as possible. Ultimately, I think what we’re going to go after is providing that base that allows people to realize those gains in different forms.

assa abloy introduces 75 products ASSA ABLOY opened the 2014 ASiS international Seminar and exhibits with the announcement of 75 new products, highlighted by solutions for mobile access, wireless and sustainability.

“this year’s show highlights three major trends that security professionals have come to Atlanta to learn about. the first is wireless, where ASSA ABLOY has been driving the discussion for a long time and where we now see wide market adoption. the second is mobile access, where we see significant increases in hardware options during recent months to support mobile credentials. the final trend is sustainability. while it’s new for the security community, it will quickly be recognized as a critical factor in technology decisions by endusers and integrators alike,” says Martin huddart, president, access and egress hardware group, ASSA ABLOY Americas.

Vandal resistant 4K cameras

Panasonic

Built on Panasonic’s 12 megapixel 4K ULTRA HD engine, the iPRO ULTRA 360 panoramic indoor (WV-SFV480) and outdoor (WVSFN481) cameras produce a 9MP 3K x 3K Fisheye image at 15fps and a 4MP Fisheye image at 30fps for incredibly high resolution at standard frame rates. The cameras’ new ½” 12MP image sensor delivers high-sensitivity in colour at less than 0.4 lux for sharp images in color and black-and-white and in the event the IR cut filter is removed to gain higher sensitivity under low-light, the Super Chroma Compensation (SCC) feature preserves full color rendition. Further, a new Auto Back Focus (ABF) structure designed specifically for the cameras’ single focus lens ensures both models automatically achieve optimal focus in day or night environments while helping to streamline installation.

The SpotterRF C950 radar system is extremely lightweight, yet its 300-acre coverage area is twice that of any commercial SpotterRF product to date. There are no moving parts to maintain as with rotating radar with similar coverage potential. With a range of 1,350 meters for a walking person, the C950 provides advanced perimeter warning for a wider variety of environments such as electrical substations, airports, solar farms, seaports and borders. With no moving parts, the unit is virtually maintenance free. With the successful deployment of SpotterRF in wide-open areas like Exxon’s Alaska oil fields, the C950 further expands the range at which perimeter intrusion is detected. .
