SAFETY FIRST AND LAST
A supervisor’s conviction sends a strong message. by Jeff Thorne

Hitting the road
Travel has become more feasible in a changing world.
I’m writing this in the car on the way down to Florida for a March Break trip with my family. Well, my family minus one, as my teenage daughter is on a school trip to Europe, where she’s touring palaces and cathedrals unlike anything we have over here. We take this Florida trip every other year because my father has a condo in Fort Meyers where he and my stepmother stay most of the winter.
Thirty years ago, when I was the same age as my daughters, a family with the jobs my wife and I have would not have been taking such frequent trips or sending kids to such exotic destinations. Airfares are less expensive as a proportion of incomes. Dad bought his condo in the trough of the Florida real estate crash during the Great Recession. Gas is not exactly cheap, and the dollar is only middling, but still our level of personal wealth makes these activities feasible – just.
I think this is the case for most people in Canada today with steady employment. Overall, our money goes farther and serviceable credit is more easily available. Just look at the lines of credit that banks offer through their mortgage lending channels these days. If you have equity in your house, you can easily borrow tens of thousands of dollars at the same rate as your mortgage. In the past, this had to be tied to a very specific home renovation project to ensure the bank that the money

lent would be funneled back into the security asset. Now, for some reason, they don’t care. Maybe they were just sick of being lied to all the time.
Whatever the reason, people are spending. And that includes rental people. Thirty years ago, Canadian Mom and Pop rental store were not taking an annual trip to the ARA Rental Show. They didn’t have the staff to leave the store for that long. They didn’t want to risk being out of touch in a foreign country. They worked long hours on tight margins – money and time were too precious to waste on anything not strictly necessary. It was in this environment that our present network of regional trade shows sprang up.
Today, Mom and Pop have been on a good business run for at least two years. And they are benefitting from all the same factors as my family. That’s likely enabled them to hire a full-time store manager who can mind the shop while they travel. The airfare and hotel costs are no big deal and a tax write-off anyway. And they’re never out of touch while away – in fact, business can continue almost as normal for the most part. How much of your day is spent on email, looking things up on the internet, or on the phone? Well, all of that can now be done almost as easily from the ARA show floor as it can from your office.
So given the logistical and financial feasibility of traveling, what’s your preferred destination? New Orleans? Or Mississauga?
Wait, don’t answer that.
No, on second thought, DO answer that. A survey is going to be hitting your inbox soon to collect information on what shows you attended this year. We’ll be using this information to guide future decisions about the Canadian Rental Mart and how to keep it relevant and useful to you. CRS

CONCRETE SUCCESS
The inaugural edition of the Canadian Concrete Expo took place at the International Centre in Mississauga, Ont., on Feb. 7 and 8. The show, put on by 20/20 Show Productions, featured more than 200 exhibiting companies that took up 200,000 square feet of floor space. There was a full line up of seminars that took place both days of the show as well as a live demonstration area that attracted many attendees. The show was extremely well attended with line-ups both days at the registration desk waiting for the event to open. Final attendance numbers are not yet known. Plans are already underway for next year’s event, which will take place Feb. 6 and 7 again at the International Centre. Details will be available online at canadianconcreteexpo.com.
B.C. BUSINESS REACTS TO MINIMUM WAGE HIKE
British Columbia will gradually hike its minimum hourly wage to get to $15.20 by June 2021. It’s a decision criticized by both labour and business groups.
“We believe that 2021 is not overly aggressive, in fact it’s going to be a disappointment to some,” Premier John Horgan told a news conference Feb. 8 at a coffee shop in North Vancouver.
The timeline is aimed at finding a balance between allowing businesses to predict their needs and giving hope to about 400,000 of the lowest-paid workers in the province, he said.
“If we’re going to be competitive, if we’re going to be able to recruit and retain workers in sectors like hospitality and others that pay, on balance, lower wages we need to make sure that we are competitive with other jurisdictions,” Horgan said.
Ian Tostenson, CEO of the B.C. Restaurant and Food Services Association, said wages are not the cause of understaffing. A shortage of young workers in B.C. compounded with the fact many older employees leave the industry because “it’s really tough work” is at the root of the problem, Tostenson said.
“We’ve come to a fairly strong conclusion that the business model needs to reflect more of a worklife balance in restaurants,” he said, adding the association is promoting better scheduling for workers and other benefits. A 13-per cent
increase in wages this year will be a hard hit for many restaurants, Tostenson said, adding that delaying this year’s hike until September would have helped. The wage is currently $11.35 and will rise every June until 2021.
Horgan said B.C. is making other changes to help businesses such as eliminating the provincial sales tax on electricity by 2019. The government appointed a commission last October to deal with the business sector and establish the timing of the minimum wage increase, which will go up by $1.30 this year, $1.20 in 2019 and jump by less than a dollar in the following two years. The three experts who led the Fair Wages Commission recommended predictable and regular hikes and said the hourly wage rate could be raised to $15.40 an hour by 2021, depending on economic conditions.
“We believe that we have strong economic growth in British Columbia and the commission’s rationale for front-end loading the increases was because we have a robust economy in British Columbia and the expectation is that’s going to continue for the next two years,” Horgan said.
Surrey Board of Trade CEO Anita Huberman said the wage hikes over three years are too quick and she had asked the commission for a five-year implementation to give businesses time to adjust and for
all future increases to be indexed to the Consumer Price Index. “Our small businesses, especially those in the service sector, are vulnerable to increasing costs from various sources,” Huberman said in a statement. “I am especially concerned that this may be the straw that breaks some of them.”
She noted businesses are facing increased property taxes and higher taxes due to recent federal changes. “The cost of living is a major concern for our members as employees need to be able to thrive in the community. However, too big a jump may possibly lose some of them their jobs as employers try to balance their books as a result of these jumps.”
BC Federation of Labour president Irene Lanzinger said she’s disappointed it will take over three years to raise the minimum wage to $15.20 an hour, noting Alberta’s increase is expected later this year and Ontario’s in 2019. “Poverty and inequality are rampant in our province while B.C. is Canada’s most expensive place to live,” Lanzinger said in a statement. “In light of the slow timeline to achieve $15, we expect that the government will move more decisively in the next phase of its fair wage process around exemptions from the minimum wage, like the punitively lower wages for restaurant servers and farm workers, and the concept of a living wage,” she said.

AEM SAYS LEAVE NAFTA IN PLACE
Rich Goldsbury, chair of the Association of Equipment Manufacturer’s board of directors and president of Doosan Bobcat North America, recently warned manufacturers about potential consequences that could occur if the United States decides to exit the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). In a Jan. 23 op-ed for U.S. News & World Report, Goldsbury noted that Canada and Mexico are the top two export markets (respectively) for both construction and farm equipment manufactured in the United States. Manufacturers sold $9.1 billion in construction equipment to Canada in 2015, and over $1 billion to Mexico during that same year. Farm equipment manufacturers sold $2.1 billion in machinery to Canada and $1.2 billion into Mexico in 2016.

“There are plenty of terrific opportunities to improve upon NAFTA to the benefit of manufacturers in the United States, as well as Canada and Mexico. But exiting the agreement altogether would risk U.S. equipment manufacturers’ ability to sell to some of their most important customers,” he said.

KOMATSU BUYS FORESTRY ATTACHMENTS

In January, Komatsu signed an agreement to acquire from Prenbec Equipment, a company based in Quebec, its Quadco and Southstar forestry attachment operations excluding the forestry equipment businesses of Tanguay and Forespro delimbers. The acquisition will be made through a wholly owned subsidiary of Komatsu in the United States. By adding the Quadco felling heads and Southstar large harvester heads to the existing lines of Log Max and Komatsu small and mediumsized harvester heads, Komatsu plans to become an industry leader in forestry attachments. This will allow Komatsu to offer its customers a full range of forestry attachments. Quadco and Southstar will continue to operate as independent companies within the Komatsu group following the completion of the acquisition and will maintain their existing sales networks. In order to offer improved value to customers, a forestry attachment division within Komatsu Forest AB will be formed, which will manage the Quadco, Southstar, and Log Max brands.

SHELLY’S STORY
What’s behind the scenes of the success of one of the west coast’s oldest family-owned rental companies.
Harrigan Rentals, only 52 years young this year, has had quite a history. It’s one of British Columbia’s oldest family owned-and-operated rental firms and it was founded by Jim Harrigan.
by SHELLEY HARRIGAN AND TREENA HEIN
Jim grew up on a farm in Shepard, Alta., the youngest of 11 Irish Catholic children. You could say his career began at the age of 13 when, at school one day, he had an argument with his teacher. Not one to back down and realizing he was not going to win, Jim climbed out a window of the one-room schoolhouse, never to return. He was told by his hardworking parents that he would have to help support the family if he was not going to remain in school – and that’s just what he did.
“After a series of odd jobs, one of his first serious jobs was selling farm equipment,” explains Jim’s daughter Shelley. “He loved to tell the story of his first sale. He sold a combine harvester to a pair of spinsters in the heart of a wickedly cold Alberta winter. When asked the secret to his success on that first sale, he would say that he informed the ladies he would stay until spring if that is what it took to close the deal.” While that particular method of closing a deal might

seem a tad outlandish, Shelley says it exemplified her dad’s perseverance and determination, traits which laid a strong foundation for his future success.
That success was also built on a longing inside Jim to be his own boss. After a successful stint at Homelite selling power equipment, he tried unsuccessfully to get investors to open a rental company with him. He then decided to go it alone and, despite having little money and no business plan, in 1967 he moved his young family to B.C. to make it happen. Shelley says his first location was a small room he purchased in an industrial building in Burnaby, and that he chose it simply because “the price was right.” Jim was on the road selling and Joan his wife did the books at home in the evening.
Jim knew he needed to do some marketing, but he also needed to get that done without spending very much money. “He began renting wooden barricades with flashing lights to the

As competition from big-box hardware stores and large chains has increased, Harrigan has held its own with a skilled workforce that adds value for renters.

City of Burnaby at a competitive price,” Shelley recounts. “He stamped the company name in large black letters on a yellow background and it was very distinctive.” This was the beginning of the firm’s branding and sure enough,
over time, Harrigan Rentals became somewhat of a household name in the region. Shelley says people would steal lights from the Harrigan Rental barricades and display them in their rec rooms as part of the party decor.

By the early 1970s, Jim was ready to expand and purchased a property in Burnaby. Not long after, he opened a second branch in Surrey, managed by his friend Dave MacIntyre until he retired. “Dad also tried his hand up in Fort McMurray in the ‘80s, opening a branch there, but being an absentee owner provided challenges and he closed it after a few years,” says Shelley. “In the mid-’80s, he opened a third location in the area. He found a property on the east side of Vancouver and it was perfect timing to capitalize on the construction boom for Expo.” With three locations, Jim now felt he had solid coverage in the lower mainland.
A NEW ERA
Fast forward to 2007. Jim was dividing his time between Scottsdale, Ariz., and B.C. In the late fall, he passed away at the age of 75.
Shelley had a big decision to make, but it really wasn’t a hard one. Even though she had no rental industry experience, she wanted to ensure her father’s legacy survived and thrived. “Actually, back in the early 2000s I had wanted to get into Dad’s business in a sales capacity but he was against it,” she says. “I believe he felt the equipment rental business was an environment that would be tough for a woman to handle, a sort of man’s world, and I can appreciate that, having children of my

own.” However, at the time of his death, Shelley felt ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead. She traded her suits and heels (used in her previous long-time position at a multinational alcohol beverage firm) for a hard hat, steel-toed boots and a safety vest. And dug in.
The first change Shelley initiated was to set up the software that her father had purchased years before but never implemented. “He had a fantastic gut instinct for business, but my Dad was a pen and paper guy who got his leads from the paper version of the Journal of Commerce and from hanging around government offices after tenders were released, meeting with contractors,” Shelley explains. “I’d been employed at a multinational company and there was no way I could imagine operating the company without computer automation. Nothing was automated when I started.”
Unfortunately, there were bigger problems than only paper records. On top of all she had to learn, and despite the fact that 2007 had been her father’s company’s best year, the market crash in the fall of 2008 hit the business like a sledgehammer. Shelley made the hard decision to close the Burnaby location and move all the employees to the two other branches. She also moved the head office to

Port Moody. However, she was determined that not a single employee would be laid off, and she succeeded with that fairly ambitious goal.
“I think making sure everyone kept their jobs really made our staff understand that they were important and we would look after them, and it built their loyalty in return,” she says. “I really believe every person is valuable in our organization. We treat our employees like family. We believe in promoting people from within and this has created great depth and

EARTH DRILL WHISPERING
Preventing and diagnosing complications for mechanical earth drills
Auto mechanics deal with it all the time — the phone call requesting an over-the-phone diagnosis. Inevitably the conversation includes the vehicle owner providing a not-so-spot-on impression of the sound their car or truck is making, whether a screeching, whining, clunking or grinding noise. Although this is a less than ideal way to pinpoint a mechanical problem, with years of experience comes the ability to make an insightful and often accurate assessment of what to expect when the vehicle rolls into the shop.
by MIKE HALE, SALES MANAGER, LITTLE BEAVER
LEFT: Spring damage can cause the clutch to overheat and may result in the auger spinning when the engine is idling. If this occurs, replace the springs immediately.
RIGHT: Monitor blade sharpness and replace them when they become dull. Keeping replacement blades on hand will make this a quick and easy fix.
Mechanical earth drill experts develop a similar knack for over-the-phone troubleshooting. From the auger turning too slowly or turning when it shouldn’t, to a smoking clutch or overheating gearbox, many of the common concerns that experts hear allow for spot-on answers. And fortunately, drill operators often know more about their drills than an average driver knows about what’s happening under the hood of their car, which means less reliance on poorly imitated sounds.
Mechanical drills are compact, powerful and excellent for quickly drilling holes, making them a popular choice for contractors and rental centers. The catch? Mechanical drills

are transmission-powered and have significantly more moving parts than their more expensive hydraulic counterparts. Knowing how to prevent, recognize and repair the most common problems will go a long way toward keeping a mechanical drill running efficiently.
PREVENTION
What steps can I take to minimize the risk of damaging the drill?
Preventing damage starts with selecting a unit with the correct gear ratio and auger for the soil in which it will be drilling. When working in regular black soil with minimal rocks and roots, a 10:1 gear ratio with a

standard auger will provide fast and efficient results. For drilling in clay or other difficult conditions, a 10:1 gear ratio will still work, however it’s best to switch from a standard to carbide blade, which should also be used when digging in areas with tree roots.
When working in soil with rocks that exceed three inches in diameter, a drill with a 20:1 gear ratio reduction should be used with a heavy-duty auger. The 20:1 gear reduction slows the auger from 360 to 180 RPM. This setup pops the rocks out of the soil and continues to spin. Drilling in these conditions with a 10:1 ratio and standard auger can severely damage the auger, blades, flex shaft and gearbox. Whether buying or renting, it’s important to understand your application and soil conditions to select the ideal drill.
GEARBOX PROBLEMS
Should I be concerned that the gearbox is hot and making an unusual sound?
First of all, it’s important to understand that the gearbox will always be hot to the touch when the drill is operating. However, if the transmission is extremely hot, smells like
RIGHT: What’s in the ground should determine what’s in your drill. One gear ratio does not serve all needs.

burned oil or starts making unusual sounds, it’s likely the result of low oil. Oil levels can drop as a result of leaks around the seal, lower output shaft or the top of the transmission. If this happens, stop the drill and check the gearbox’s oil level.
Excessive heat and gearbox sounds may also be a sign of worn bearings. Although it’s normal for bearings to wear over time, the process happens much more quickly when oil levels are not properly maintained. To prevent early wear, check the transmission oil monthly or after every 40 hours of operation. Skipping maintenance and ignoring warning signs can cause the gearbox
to lock up, taking the drill out of use until the bearings can be replaced. Replacing the bearings takes as long as three hours and can cost upward of $100 to $200, not to mention the cost of equipment downtime if parts are not readily available.
FLEXIBLE DRIVE SHAFT DAMAGE
The engine is running, so why won’t the auger turn?
A problem with the drivetrain, typically along the flexible drive shaft, tends to be the culprit when an auger won’t turn. To pinpoint the problem, start by inspecting the end fittings for

cracks or breaks. If there are broken wires or sharp kinks, it’s time to replace the shaft housing. If things appear fine from the outside, remove the flex shaft for further inspection. Depending on the damage, the entire flex shaft assembly may need to be replaced.
To prevent flex shaft damage, it’s important to clean, examine and grease the flex shaft every 50 hours of operation. Check the owner’s manual to determine the correct amount of grease, as excessive grease can gum up in the flex shaft, reducing its operating life. Too little grease, on the other hand, can dry out the cable, causing it to break or generate enough heat and friction to burn through the outer housing. Ignoring flex shaft maintenance can also damage the pinion gear bearings, which cost about $150 to replace.
Helixing of the flex shaft is another concern, especially if the auger repeatedly hits solid objects, such as rocks, during operation. When an obstruction causes the auger to stop abruptly while the engine delivers torque, the shaft can helix, which will lead to diminished performance and eventually cause the flex shaft to lock up.

BIG BASKET OF BENEFITS
Join for the people. Stay for the perks.
by MIKE MALTBY, CRA PRESIDENT
Iwant to start this column by thanking those of you reading this that have made the choice to become members of the Canadian Rental Association. Our association is strong because of members like you who make the choice to join us.
We believe that the true value of membership in this or any trade organization comes from getting involved. However, we also believe that there should never be a time that any rental company questions the value of membership in our association. So this year, your national board, the executive team, head office and the provincial chapters have been diligently working together to advance our common goals and to begin to offer real value to our members.
For most of the recent past CRA Insurance has been the cornerstone of our product offering. Insurance is and will remain a strong component in the overall package. Our protected self-insurance program continues to provide the best value in Canada for qualifying members.
However, we are no one-trick pony. We’ve been busy this year strengthening the programs we offer our members and have rolled out three new programs.
FIAT CHRYSLER FLEET PROGRAM
This program will provide members significant savings on new vehicle purchases. The program is open to your employees as well, so it can be added to your companies employee benefit offering.
LEGAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
This program will provide 30 minutes of legal advice on an unlimited number of business or personal legal matters. It will also provide for a discount on hourly service charges once the half hour has expired. The program is offered through partnerships with a pre-screened group of legal experts with experience representing equipment rental companies. This program is also available to your employees.
DELUXE PAYROLL AND HR SUPPORT

CRA has partnered with Deluxe Payroll to offer payroll services to members. In addition to basic payroll processing, this program will allow members to opt in to receive human resources support from professionals at Deluxe. Trained HR professionals will be available to help employers navigate the challenges of complying with employment standards regulations or any other issues that arise while dealing with your employees.
We also continue to provide strong supports to our members through our Ready 2 Go tags; credit and debit card processing through FirstData; and Petro Canada fuel savings.
All of this before the association does anything to support your business through networking or educational events. Our plan is to develop our capacity at head office to continue to undertake more and better service in support of our industry in Canada. To do this, we’ll need to partner with you, our members, to help determine exactly what supports we can offer today and what to work towards going forward. We’ll also be asking for help from our members as we build out our safety and legislative offerings.
The Canadian Rental Association has been supporting the needs of the rental industry in Canada for 51 years. I’m looking forward to being a part of our changing industry and our continued success in it. The equipment rental industry is catching up with the broader retail sector in its adoption of automation and online services. Your businesses will not look the same in the future as they did in the past, and neither will your association.
If you have anything you’d like to see your association provide, please reach out to me, head office or any other member of the CRA leadership team. Together we can raise the standard of our industry and our association. CRS

Mike Maltby is vice-president of Ingersoll Rent-All in Ingersoll, Ont. Mike has been a fixture at CRA Ontario events since beginning his time with the association in 2006, and looks forward to connecting with CRA members nationally in the coming years.

AT YOUR SERVICE Practice like a pro
Take care of the small details to
by Russ Dantu
It was the beginning of the season in 1959 when Vince Lombardi took over as head coach of the NFL’s Green Bay Packers football team. They had won only two games the year before and were considered the laughingstock of the league. What Vince did in the next nine years would become known as one of the greatest feats in football, ever. He turned the team around, winning five championships of which three were in consecutive years. No wonder the Super Bowl trophy is named after him!
With a room full of professional football players, he did something so effective that many businesses should take note. He took his players back to the basics. Each year, at the start of the season, he would hold up a football and say, “This is a football!”
They would then practice the fundamentals of tackling, blocking, receiving and running. He continued to work with the team until they honed their skills in each part of the game. They are still considered by many to be the greatest football team during any era.
If you want your business to be the Green Bay Packers of your industry, going back to the basics is a great place to start. If you are willing to practice like a pro in your business every day, I guarantee you will take your business and employees to levels your competition cannot match. Change your thinking, stay focused, and do the time to lay the groundwork for success.
Here are five things you need to do before working with your team on the basics:
1. Read/train often
Use articles and books on your specific subject so you are up to speed with current issues or trends. Take training sessions that will help you learn new techniques and give you a refresher or different viewpoint on areas you are already fairly confident in.
Ask for help – no one has to do this alone! Many successful businesses hire business coaches or mentors to work with them. This is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength. It shows

your team that you are committed to making the business better, which in turn, usually means more money and benefits for everyone.
2. Exercise
There is a direct link between physical exercise and business performance. I know this from firsthand experience. If we just work, work, work, eventually we will burn out and possibly fade away. By making the time to take care of our body, we gain energy and clarity. It reduces stress and helps us maintain a positive attitude. I cannot say enough how important exercise is in the wellbeing of your body and business.
3. Reflection
It is equally important to take time each day to reflect on where you are at, personally and professionally. Whether you choose to meditate, do yoga, or find a quiet place to close your eyes and reflect on the day, this is extremely beneficial to your health and the health of your business. I, personally, have struggled with this for many years. I always find something that needs to be done and before I know it, the day is gone. By scheduling it in your daytimer, planner or phone it will force you to make time until it becomes a habit. Sometimes, even laying down for 20 minutes on the couch where all you hear is the silence can be very beneficial.
4. Stay the course
It is easy to get sidetracked. You must stay the course in order to see results in yourself and in your team. Commit to one year of working on yourself and I know you will not stop after this. It will become part of your regular workday. In the next newsletter, we’ll focus on working with your team on the basics! CRS

A NEW KING CROWNED
The 2018 Canadian Truck King Challenge results
This year’s Challenge consisted of mid-size, full-size and HD entries – ten trucks in all – vying for a win in what is now its 11th year. We tested 10 2018 pickup trucks covering the 2500 HD segment. Two midsize and five full-size pickups completed the rest of the 2018 entries. A complete list of scores by model follow, revealing our choice for the winner of the 2018 Canadian Truck King Challenge.
by HOWARD J ELMER
THE TESTING METHOD
As most readers know the Canadian Truck King Challenge does what we call “real world testing”. Our journalist judges drive the trucks on a prescribed course empty, then with payload and finally towing a trailer on this same route, one after the other, back to back. This year judges drove more than 3,000 kilometers during testing while scoring each truck across 20 different categories. These totals are then averaged across the field of judges and converted to a percentage out of 100.
The HD trucks and the midsize category used our usual Head River, Ont., test loop while half-tons were tested on a new loop in Halton Hills, Ont., using the same method.
Midsize trucks carried a payload of 500 pounds and towed 4,000 pounds. The halftons hauled payload of 600 pounds and towed 7,000 pounds while the ¾-tons towed 10,000 pounds and used 1,000 pounds for payload. The weights we use never exceed those published manufacturer limits.
FUEL ECONOMY
Each year we use electronic data recorders during testing to capture real world fuel economy. An outside company, FleetCarma, collects, and translates the data from each truck giving us a unique fuel economy report. One that shows not only empty consumption, but also consumption while loaded and while
With enhanced coldweather performance, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 diesel rises to the top of Elmer’s yearly ratings. Truck King tests in Canadian conditions, not some New Mexico desert.

Testing of the Big Three HD diesel-powered pickups took place during the first real cold snap in November. The weather was nasty. I remember thinking that for truck testing, in Canada, it was actually appropriate because unlike magazine awards that come out of the deserts of California or Texas, Truck King is homegrown, tattooed red and white and very often frozen.

ABOUT THE WINNER:
2018 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 LTZ Z71
The winner of this year’s challenge is a truck that has been refined year after year adding technology and improving its diesel engine. It’s now, in the opinion of the judges, the best 2500-series HD hauler on the market. This 2018 version of the Silverado HD came to us equipped with a new generation of the 6.6-liter V8 turbo-diesel. Its been redesigned with a new cylinder block and heads. Its oil and coolant flow capacity has been increased and the turbocharging system is now electronically controlled. Horsepower has increased to 445 and torque now reaches 910 footpounds. Ninety percent of both numbers are achieved at just 1,550 RPM.
A new two-piece oil pan makes the Duramax quieter and also houses an integrated oil cooler with 50 per cent greater capacity than found on the old engine. Of particular interest to Canadians will be the new Duramax cold-weather performance. With microprocessor-controlled glow plugs the engine requires less than three seconds to preheat in temperatures as low as minus 29 C. These new ceramic glow plugs adjust current to each plug based on outside temperature. This new engine continues to be coupled to the Allison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission, which has a stellar reputation.
Also new is a redesigned air intake system, which uses an integrated hood scoop that traps snow, sleet and rain. It drains it away from the breather allowing cool dry air to get to the engine without clogging it up.
But past the mechanical updates, this

Chevrolet impresses with the number of electronic driver assist features that make moving loads easier and safer over all. One is a new digital steering assist that improves road handling. A new tire pressure monitor system now includes a tire fill alert. All full driver alert package includes lane departure warning, forward collision alert, safety alert seat and front and rear park assist. GM’s longtime StabiliTrak stability control system has been updated to include rollover mitigation technology, a tie-in to the trailer sway control and hill start assist.
Visual help is found in the Chevrolet MyLink with an eight-inch-diagonal touchscreen. Of particular interest is the camera system that broadcasts on this centre-mounted touchscreen (now standard on all models with a cargo box). It shows reversing images that make hooking up easy, whether it’s to the bumper hitch or the in bed’s fifth wheel. An around–the–truck view assists in parking manoeuvers. While driving, the signals now activate cameras in the mirrors showing images down the side of the truck, highlighting the blind spot. Other improvements include an available gooseneck/fifthwheel trailering preparation package that includes a spray-in bedliner. Electronic upgrades include wireless phone-charging, a remote-locking tailgate and 4G LTE Wi-Fi right in the truck.
Thank you and congratulations to all the participants and winners in the 2018 Canadian Truck King Challenge. For more detailed information on all of this year’s entries please visit truckking.ca. CRS

When drilling in rocky soil, a 20:1 gear ratio reduction will help prevent damage to the auger, blades, flex shaft and gearbox.
Units with torque tubes, however, prevent helixing by transferring torque to the engine housing, reducing strain on both operator and the flex shaft. This also improves user safety and allows for one-person drill operation. Additionally, units with a centrifugal clutch protect the flex shaft by slipping when the auger strikes an object.
SMOKING CLUTCH
Why does the clutch slip or cause the drill to jerk during operation?
Over time, a drill’s clutch padding wears, resulting in reduced performance when engaging the auger or when accelerating the engine from idle to full speed. The clutch will continue to run, even if the padding is completely gone, leading to easily detectable problems. It’s best to inspect the clutch every 30 days or any time the flexible drive shaft is being lubricated. Also, regularly clean the clutch shoes and drums, replacing them if any of the padding is missing. Monitor the clutch bearing as well, ensuring it remains loose and turns easily. If the clutch drum does not turn freely, it can lock up, causing the clutch to slip.
Spring damage — another common clutch-related concern — can cause the clutch to overheat and may result in the auger spinning when the engine is idling. If this is the case, the springs need to be replaced.
NEVER A DULL MOMENT
Why is the drill less efficient than it used to be despite everything working properly?
This is one of the most common questions that operators ask and, luckily, it’s an easy one to diagnose. Too often, operators allow the points and blades to wear beyond the point of being effective. The drill can run perfectly and spin all day, but if the blades and points are worn, the unit will become less and less effective. It’s important to monitor the blade sharpness and replace them when they become dull. If the auger needs new blades or points, discontinue use until they have been replaced. Always having replacement parts on hand will make this a quick and easy fix and will keep downtime to a minimum.

It’s important to clean, examine and grease the flex shaft every 50 hours of operation to prevent damage.
ENGINE PROBLEMS
Why won’t my engine start?
When the engine won’t start, it’s best to double-check the basics. Occasionally, it is as simple as forgetting to flip the toggle kill switch or engine stop switch out of the “off” position. If both switches are in the proper position, check that the torque tube — if your drill is equipped with one — is connected at the engine end. As a safety feature, drills with torque tubes are designed with an engine safety kill switch to prevent the engine from starting when the torque tube is not attached.
If everything appears to be set up correctly and the engine still won’t start, the engine itself may be the issue. To ensure the engine is serviced properly, contact the equipment dealer or a qualified technician.
ONLINE RESOURCES
Are there convenient resources for diagnosing and fixing these problems without calling?
Digital resources are available at everyone’s fingertips, including comprehensive maintenance brochures and video tutorials. These helpful tools are an excellent resource for operators and often include visuals as well as step-by-step instructions. A manufacturer’s website and, in some cases, its YouTube channel, are often the best places to find these resources.
Knowing the drill, keeping up with maintenance and having quick access to useful online resources will go a long way toward successful drilling. When that’s not enough, help is still just a phone call away. CRS

SAFETY FIRST AND LAST
A strong message
by Jeff Thorne
On Dec. 24, 2009, there was a catastrophic event that ultimately led to changes to the health and safety framework in Ontario. Six workers, including the supervisor, were on the 14th floor of a highrise apartment building. At approximately 4:30 p.m., the site supervisor climbed onto the swing stage to descend to ground level. The swing stage collapsed with four of the workers falling to their death and a fifth surviving the fall suffering serious life-altering injuries. The sixth worker did not fall because he was properly secured by a lifeline.
It was later discovered that only two lifelines were supplied for the workers and the swing stage was faulty and improperly constructed. The welding was faulty and broken prior to the collapse. Toronto Police Services charged Metron and the project manager Vadim Kazenelson with criminal negligence under the Criminal Code of Canada.
Skipping forward to 2012, Metron, the project owner, was ultimately fined $750,000 under the Criminal Code of Canada. Joel Swartz, a director of Metron, was fined $90,000 under the Occupational Safety Act plus a victim surcharge of $22,500. Criminal charges against Swartz were withdrawn by the Crown. But what about Kazenelson?
In 2015, Vadim Kazenelson the project manager was found guilty of four counts of criminal negligence causing death and one count of criminal negligence causing bodily harm. The Crown proved that he was aware of obvious safety risks or gave no consideration to risks he may have been aware of and willfully chose to proceed without caution. Kazenelson allowed the workers to board the swing stage with tools, without knowing the capacity of the swing stage, without harnesses, and without the required number of lifelines. A clear demonstration of wanton and reckless disregard. Failure to identify the capacity of the swing stage and ensure the required number of lifelines were present and used was a breach of provincial legislation; a breach of the training the workers had received; a breach of basic industry standards; and therefore a breach of

section 217.1. of the Criminal Code of Canada. He knew better.
In July 2016, Kazenelson was sentenced to 3.5 years for each offence to be served concurrently. The judge presiding over the case stated, “A significant term of imprisonment is necessary to reflect the terrible consequences of the case.” Now don’t get me started on whether I think the sentence was reasonable.
Up until the end of 2017, Kazenelson was out on bail awaiting his appeal. On Jan. 30, 2018, the Ontario Court of Appeal denied Kazenelson’s appeal of the three-and-a-halfyear sentence. This decision is huge, a game changer! The appeal court justice, a three-judge panel that heard the appeal, ruled specifically that the trial judge had not erred during the trial and had determined the case correctly. They stated that “The trial judge’s reasons for conviction and sentence are clear and the chain of reasoning is rooted firmly in his findings of fact. He made no legal or other errors. The appellant largely repeated arguments considered and dismissed by the trial judge.”
The Ontario Court of Appeal confirmed the sentence of three-and-a-half-years in prison.
Justice Peter Lauwers wrote, “the desire to complete the work that day led the appellant to compromise his duties.” This statement alone should plant a seed in the mind of employers and supervisors that safety should never take a back seat.
This landmark decision sends a strong message. When there is at-risk behaviour and foreseeable risks where the risk of harm has not been mitigated, or a willfully blind eye has been turned, the courts will take this seriously.
We are almost nine years into this. Families and lives have been changed forever. New standards have been created to improve working at heights safety, but it will take a combined effort between employers, supervisors and workers to move forward on the right path to prevent similar incidents in the future. CRS
