Smart packaging making inroads in juice markets
Amorning glass of orange or apple juice is a daily breakfast ritual for millions of North Americans eager to kick the day off on the right foot with a quick all-natural boost of vitamins, nutrients, energy and delicious taste.
The numbers speak for themselves. According to a recent report from global market researchers at IndustryARC, the global fruit and vegetable juice market is projected to reach US$231 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 6.4 per cent between 2023 and 2030.
“The fruit and vegetable juice industry has witnessed significant growth, as this is considered a naturally sourced nutritious food with the ability to boost immunity,” the study notes.
“For example, 240-ml of pomegranate juice contains 22 per cent of the DV (daily value) of Vitamin K and 12 per cent of the DV of potassium, which helps in improving the heart health of older people, helps people combat a variety of health issues, and strengthens immunity,” the report adds.
Delivering these benefits to consumers naturally requires sound reliable packaging to get the product from the packaging line to the retail point-of-purchase, and juice-makers large and small are happily spoilt for choice in terms of packaging materials and formats.
Currently, glass bottles account for about 30 per cent of the market; PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles for another 30 per cent; aluminum cans for 20 per cent; paper-plastic composite materials (drink boxes) for another 10 per cent; and several different non-PET plastic polymers for the rest.
While each material options has its advantages and drawbacks, the good news is that they are largely compatible with the existing recycling streams across much of the industrialized world, and without drawing the sort of nasty criticism often used to demonize the bottled water industry.
But it is really beyond the physical package where true packaging ingenuity in this sector really shine, according to a new report from Transparency Market Research (TMR), by leveraging technologies such as:
•IoT Sensors , embedded in packaging to monitor temperature, hu-
midity, and other environmental factors that can affect the quality of juice. “This real-time monitoring is crucial in maintaining the integrity of the product throughout the supply chain,” TMR notes.
•Blockchain Technology, providing “transparent and immutable way to track the journey of juice from the farm to the consumer,” says TMR.
“By recording every step in the supply chain on a blockchain, consumers can be assured of the authenticity and quality of the product.”
•Augmented Reality (AR) Labels, used to create interactive labels to provide consumers with engaging product content by scanning the packaging with a smartphone to learn about the origin of the juice, nutritional content, and even view videos of the production process.
•Smart Labels and QR Codes, the latter being used to provide consumers with additional product information by linking them to websites, promotional offers, and even social media pages. For their part, “Smart labels can also include freshness indicators that change color based on the quality of the juice,” the report notes, “providing a visual cue about the product’s freshness.”
As the TMR report points out, “The integration of smart technology in juice packaging not only benefits manufacturers and retailers but also offers consumers a superior product experience.”
The growing use of all these so-called “smart packaging” technologies is a major growth catalyst for the global juice packaging market, which TMR projects to rise from US$3.4 billion in 2023 to over US$5 billion by 2032.
As the report sums up, “Smart technology is revolutionizing how juice is packaged—ensuring better quality, safety, sustainability and consumer engagement.
“As these technologies continue to evolve, we can expect even more innovative solutions that will shape the future of the industry.”

Beverage producer strengthens western ties with new DC outlet
Leading Canadian beverage producer Keurig Dr Pepper Canada (KDP Canada) has announced major expansion of its operations in western Canada with an agreement for the lease of a 100,000-square-foot space in the XTL Group (XTL) distribution center just outside of Calgary in Balzac, Alta.
According to KDP, this strategic expansion is designed to significantly enhance the company’s ability to service its growing customer base in western Canada, while also creating 50 new local full-time jobs.
Covering an impressive 474,000 square feet, the new state-of-the-art facility, managed and operated by XTL, includes 40-foot clearance, 16,000 racking positions, over 400,000 square feet of bulk storage, 112 loading dock doors, and 120 trailer parking spots—making it the ideal choice for preserving bottled beverages, coffee products, and small appliances.

Cambridge, Ont.-based automation solutions provider ATS Corporation has completed the acquisition of Paxiom Group, a prominent manufacturer of primary, secondary, and end-of-line packaging machines used in the food-and-beverage, cannabis, and pharmaceutical industries. Headquartered in Montreal, Paxiom has an extensive product line that spans weigh filling, wrapping and bagging, labeling and palletizing equipment, manufactured at its sister companies WeighPack Systems (Montreal), EndFlex (Miami, Fla.), Valtara (Italy) and Kand-Di (Shanghai, China), as well as at the company’s flagship Xperience Center design and integration facility in Las Vegas, Nev. (Picture Above) Employing about 200 people, Paxiom generated revenues of US$67 million in 20023, with most of those sales taking place in North America.

Cyklop International, major global manufacturer of end-of-line packaging equipment headquatered in Hellmond, The Netherlands, has complete the acquisition of Polaris Systems Inc. , Mississauga, Ont.based provider of strapping, stretchwrapping and protective packaging solutions. “One of our main objectives was to re-establish a strong presence in the U.S. and Canada [after] the past crisis period,” says Cyklop’s chief executive officer Roberto Salemme. “Today, we are proud to announce not only our return, but also our return with solid structures and well-organized operations.”
Adds Cyclop’s chief financial officer André van Es: “As Cyklop continues to grow organically, we also continue to look for opportunities through acquisition. With our acquisition of InkJet, Inc. in the U.S. last year, it was

The ALPLA Group, leading Austrian manufacturer of plastic packaging products and injection-molded components, has completed the acquisition of Heinlein PlastikTechnik GmbH, a prominent German manufacturer of dosing systems and application aids for the pharma and medical industries, employing about 175 people at its production site in Ansbach, Bavaria. “I am delighted that we have been able to gain this long-established global business,’ says ALPLA Group’s chief executive officer Philipp Lehner. “It is a good fit with our focus, on the one hand, on the dynamics of advancing technological innovations and on the global expansion of our business activities on the other,” Lehner explains. With the extensive know-how that Heinlein has to offer, we can expand our product portfolio to include high-quality primary packaging solutions for the pharma industry, where our mutual customers will now be able to source their tailored system solutions from a single place.”
Cincinnati, Ohio-headquartered packaging equjiompent manufacturing groups ProMach has completed a significant expansion at its Zalkin capping and cap handling equipment manufacturing facility in Montreuil L’Argillé, France, acquired by ProMach in2014. The new investment adds 100,000 square feet to Zalkin’s existing 160,000 square-foot facility to increase production capacity, reduce lead times, and further accelerate company growth. Founded in 1932, Zalkin is a major globally-operating manufacturer of capping solutions— with speeds ranging from 8,000 to 100,00 caps per hours—for leading producers of non-alcoholic beverages, wines and spirits, dairy products, food processing, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and household products.
U.K.-headquartered paperboard packaging manufacturer Mondi plc has announced completion of major a major €125 million upgrade of its containerboard mill Kuopio, Finland— increasing its annual production capacity by 55,000 tonnes, while enhancing efficiency and improving environmental performance. The comprehensive modernization project included upgrades to the wood yard, fiber line, evaporation plant, and the paper machine producing ProVantage Powerflute—high-performance fluting predominantly used in fresh fruit and vegetable trays and boxes. “We are delighted to celebrate the completion of this significant investment and the opportunity it gives us to continue providing high-quality, sustainable products to
our customers,” says Mondi Group’s chief executive officer Andrew King. “It also demonstrates our commitment to supporting economic growth in the region and securing the long-term viability of the Kuopio mill.”

has picked up the Gold Award in the Snacks and Confectionery category of the annual Environmental Packaging Awards competition hosted by the U.K.-based industry publication Packaging News. The winning entry, developed in collaboration with Kellanova, is the groundbreaking paper-based Pringles tube, which now features a paper fiberbased bottom instead of the traditional metal end. This innovative design not only retains Pringles’
iconic cylindrical shape—used to keep the chips neatly stacked inside—but also enhances its recyclability and sustainability by making the new tube widely accepted in paper recycling streams across Europe. “Our partnership with Kellanova has enabled us to create a packaging solution that maintains the beloved Pringles experience while significantly improving its environment impact,” says Seàn Cairns, Sonoco’s president of the company’s global RPC (Rigid Paper and Closures) business unit. “We are incredibly proud of this accomplishment and thrilled to be recognized with this award.”

Domino Printing Sciences has announced the launch of a new thermal inkjet (TIJ) solution designed specifically for flexible packaging lines, including food applications. According to Domino, the new TIJ into TTO solution within the Domino Gx-Series range has been developed as an efficient, cost-effective alternative to traditional thermal transfer overprinting (TTO) for flexible packaging lines requiring simple one-, two- or four-line printed text codes and small-sized 2D codes up to 10x10mm. According to one end-user from a major food-and-beverage brand, “Switching to Gx-series printers has meant we have gone from changing consumables twice per shift to once every four days, which this has significantly reduced the number of line stoppages for consumable changes— helping to increase overall productivity.” In sample cost calculations, Domino’s solution offered up to 95-percent waste savings and 70-percent cost

Recycled carton fibers pass the ultimate strength test
Arecent research project conducted by Quebec-based industrial innovation centre Innofiber has demonstrated that used food and beverage cartons, which are mostly made from paperboard, show great potential for the manufacturing of molded pulp packaging products.
At present, no manufacturer of such packaging in North America uses pulp made wholly or partly from fibers derived from recycled cartons.
Beverage cartons come in two variants: shelf-stable cartons, also known as aseptic cartons; and refrigerated, or gabletop, cartons.
In addition to paper, cartons are composed of thin polyethylene coatings and, for shelf-stable cartons, an additional fine layer of aluminum.
These cartons are commonly used for packaging products as juice, milk and milk substitutes, soups, water and wine.
Located in Trois-Rivières, Que., Innofiber is an applied research centre renowned for its expertise in the development of products made from plant fibers. Mandated to supports the innovation and diversification of biomass products and to adapt pulp and paper technologies into innovative processes, Innofiber owns specialized analytical laboratories and pilot facilities that are unique in North America.
For this research, Innofiber produced pulp from post-consumer cartons obtained from a Quebec material recovery facility (MRF), which it then transformed into molded products using two commonly used techniques: transfer molding and thermoforming.
“Our tests confirmed that recycled carton fiber pulp has similar mechanical and physical properties to virgin kraft pulp,” explains principal researcher Eric Desnoes. “This means that we can manufacture high-quality molded products with it.”
According to the researcher, the strength of carton pulp is therefore significantly higher than that of mechanical pulp mostly obtained from old newspapers, which currently the pulp most frequently pulp used for molded products made from recycled fibers.

“Packaging made of recycled carton pulp could be used to contain or protect a wide variety of products in the food and non-food industries,” says Isabelle Faucher, managing director of the Carton Council of Canada, which commissioned the research.
The mission of the organization, which brings together four competing companies— including Elopak, Pactiv Evergreen, SIG and Tetra Pak—is to work with the various stakeholders to increase the collection and recycling of these containers.
The partnership with Innofiber aims to encourage the emergence of new local recyclers for cartons collected in Canada, according to Faucher.
As she explains, “The Council now hopes to collaborate with pulp and molded packaging manufacturers in the country who would be willing to further explore the possibilities offered by recycled carton pulp.
“In particular, the Council would

As a result of the transformation of programs underway across the country under full extended producer responsibility policies, the Council expects to see an increase in the number of cartons collected and in the local recycling rate over the next few years.
“In a context of declining volumes of newsprint and office paper, cartons can represent an alternative source of quality raw material for packaging manufacturers accustomed to working with recycled fibers,” Faucher states, “as well as for those seeking to increase their participation in the Circular Economy.”

Vegetable grower invests in metal detection technology to minimize contamination risks for its premium fresh produce

The Wall family have been feeding Canadians for nearly a century.
After immigrating from Europe in the mid1920s, John Wall and his family took their farming expertise to Canadian soils and began fruit farming in the Niagara Peninsula. In the late 1940s, they moved their operations to Norfolk and Elgin counties and experienced significant growth, expanding into farming a variety of vegetable crops and starting up Sandy Shore Farms.
By the 1960s, John’s son, Frank, along with his wife, Luella, took over the family business and expanded into asparagus production, which is a key part of the company’s production today.
“They were one of the first to actually
grow asparagus in our region,” says Marc Wall, chief operations officer at Sandy Shore Farms, and also Frank’s grandson and third-generation owner of the family business along with his cousin, Daniel, and other members of the Wall family.
Located in Norfolk, Ont., Sandy Shore Farms takes advantage of the sandy loam profile of the soil to optimize the growing of its asparagus crops.
“Asparagus loves well-drained soil, so sand is good for it. We have tons of access to water around here, and we have really good drainage. That’s why asparagus grows so well here,” Wall explains.
The company enjoyed a record year in its asparagus growing in 2024, processing and packing approximately 3.6 million pounds.
“To put that in perspective, I think the highest we’ve ever done in the past was
about 3.1 to 3.2 million, so we kicked it into high gear this year,” says Wall.
Almost all the asparagus is sold fresh to processors across North America or to major grocery retailers such as Costco, Metro, Sobeys , Wegmans, Walmart and Publix
With record numbers of asparagus being packed up to ship across North America, the company made a significant investment in its food safety program.
“There was a need to invest into metal detection on our asparagus program for food safety considerations,” Wall says.
While searching for a supplier for metal detection technologies, Sandy Shore Farms received a recommendation to work with PLAN Automation from a food safety consultant that works closely with them.
The Bolton, Ont.-based company specializes in technologies for food and quality inspection, food processing automation, packaging automation, and plant hygiene and safety.
“It’s the retailer that’s asking for it, and producers are having to increase their inspection,” explains Greg Willsie, associate partner at PLAN Automation.
“Depending on the product and what it is, they have different grades for classification. For the asparagus and for the foodservice, because it’s a farm fresh product, they only need to do metal detection.”
Marc says there are many ways that a metal could get into a product—nuts and bolts off the manufacturing line, or cutting blades during the processing, for example.
“We’ve got a very good maintenance and pre-maintenance program, but to ensure that there’s zero risk of any sort of metal getting into the product, this is a critical control point that we can control,” Wall says.
The company purchased a new TechSight metal detector with custom aperture and custom conveyor from PLAN Automation, which was installed at the end its asparagus packaging line.
The biggest challenges that PLAN Automation had to accommodate for when setting up the machine were related to the company’s plastic asparagus case and production process.
“They soak their product with water as it goes out to make sure it’s hydrated, so as
the product is running through the metal detector, it’s dripping,” Willsie explains.
“So, we needed to get a metal detector that was able to screen out the differences that we’re going to get from dripping water and the inconsistencies of moisture level in the product as they run throughout the production day.”
PLAN Automation also had to accommodate for the plastic shipping containers that the asparagus were transported in.
“The asparagus bundles are stacked inside of it, and everything’s soaked with water and drenched just before it goes through the metal detector,” Willsie says.
“So, we not only had to deal with a plastic instead of a corrugate case, but we also had to deal with water and the product dripping.”
Wall says the installation process for the TechSight metal detector was painless all around,
“Within an hour we had product running through,” he recalls. The training was excellent, very straightforward.
“I now have most of my technicians and my plant manager trained on it.
“It’s a great machine: it’s easy to use
and it’s highly accurate,” he states.

“One of the things we love about this metal detector is the HMI ) human-machine interface) and the graphs that it shows.
“It’s very easy to read and if there’s an issue, it shows up very clearly on the graph,” Wall says.
“Our quality assurance staff and our safety consultants, are very happy with this machine.”
Another advantage of the TechSight metal detector is that it can be placed on casters and moved around to the company’s other production lines, if needed.
“I know this metal detector is versatile in how we can use it,” Wall says.
“The metal detector has a lot of different presets so we can calibrate it for a certain product.”
In addition to asparagus, the company grows Spanish onions and bell peppers.
While growing and harvesting the crops are a significant part of their business, Sandy Shore Farms is also vertically integrating the packing and processing of vegetables into its daily operations.
“As the asparagus program grew, we realized more and more that our core competency was more inside the pack house, and inside the processing facilities where we’re adding value to the products that we grow,” Wall says.
“We focus more on what we can do inside our facility, and if we can do something special to that product,” he notes. “We always think about how we can vertically integrate backwards to that growing stage?”
One example is the de-coring and processing of bell peppers, which started before the farm even began growing the vegetable.
“We were bringing product in from other growers,” Wall relates. “We real-

ized that we could do this, and there was a good market for it.
“So, for a few years we worked with other growers, and then we started growing our own.”
However, Sandy Shore Farms continues to work closely with other growers, Wall points out, shipping in its bell peppers for processing from other farmers.
“We like that business model of building a community of growers to support a program, so that we’re not reliant on just our fields,” Marc says.
The company’s onion program follows a similar strategy, working with growers in the Chatham, Ont., area.
“We would bring that product in, process it, peel it, dice it, slice it, and then send it out to buyers up and down the northeast of the United States and Toronto to Detroit,” Marc says.
After realizing there was a market for processed onions, Sandy Shore Farms began attempting to grow their own.
“We went from six acres the first year— we failed miserably in the field, and that’s just how the learning curve goes in agriculture—and then in the second year we
doubled it and did a little better.
“The third year was the same thing, we grew and did a little better, learned a little more,” he continues. “And now we’re up to 157 acres of Spanish onion that we’re growing ourselves, and we have a very good crop coming on this year on both our bell peppers and our onions.”
Sandy Shore Farms recently started up a brining program for its vegetable crops, having brined about 150,000 pounds of bell peppers this year.
“The awesome thing about brining is it’s not just bell peppers: it’s carrots, celery, cauliflower, you name it.,” Wall extols.
“Anything that you buy from the grocery store in that pickled product aisle, we have the potential to make it here.
“We already have some trials in place to prepare us for the eventuality of us expanding into these other products,” Wall says.
Currently the brining process is a very manual task, but as the operation grows that could change.
“I was the guy hauling the bags of salt over my shoulder, dumping them into the mixer and mixing the brine.
“So, that’s definitely an area where we need to do some automation,” Wall says.
“As we grow that business, there’s no doubt that we’re going to start automating that whole process getting into automated recipes.
“I know some businesses that we visited where they’ll have different hoppers set up, and then each has a different ingredient, and then the augers are controlled by a PLC (programmable logic controller).
“They’ll type in the recipe in the PLC, and based on that recipe, a certain amount of ingredient will add into the mixer, and then everything gets automated,” he states.
“I would think within the next three or four years we might invest into something like that.”

Starting out in a modest 9,000-square-foot facility, the company initially focused on managing reclaimed and returned products for a major pharmaceutical company. Over the years, WG Pro has transformed into a major repacking services provider with expansive facilities in the greater Toronto area and Lethbridge, Alta.

As Wirtz recalls the company’s earlier days, “It’s amusing to think that when I started the business, I wasn’t even familiar with the term ‘co-packing’.
“At the time, I was running an employment
agency, hiring and placing packagers in other companies’ facilities. It dawned on me that this presented a unique opportunity to offer our clients a more streamlined service,” he relates.
“By providing a controlled environment where we could handle the packaging for them, we helped alleviate congestion in their spaces.
“Thus, I ventured into the co-packing industry almost inadvertently.”

“Faced with the challenge of finding workers, I turned to my longtime friend Mark Evangelista, director of sales at PLAN IT Packaging Systems, and decided it was time to automate our plant.”

“They ensured smooth operation and conducted thorough training for our team and staff, which was excellent,” he adds. “The bagger’s multiple forming tubes immediately provided us with enhanced flexibility.”
Says Wirtz: “The Mars ComPak is an advanced multihead weighing and packaging system designed to handle highspeed, precise packaging operations— making it ideal for a diverse range of products, including confectionery items and pet food.”
Equipped with 14 individual weighing heads, each capable of weighing small
portions of the product with high accuracy, the machine ensures that the combined weights meet the target weight for each package precisely.
Despite its advanced capabilities, the machine’s compact design allows it to fit seamlessly into existing production lines without requiring significant modifications.

machine include increased accuracy, efficiency, cost-effectiveness and quality control. By reducing product giveaway and ensuring consistent package weights, the machine maintains product quality and reduces costs.
Its high-speed operation optimizes operational efficiency, while quick changeover capabilities enhance flexibility—allowing the machine to switch between different products and packaging formats with minimal downtime. This precision and versatility helps users maintain high standards of product consistency and quality.
In the packaging process, the product is fed into the top of the weigher, typically via a vibrating feeder or conveyor.
The product is then distributed across the 14 heads, with each head weighing a portion of the product.
The machine calculates the best combination of weights from the 14 heads to achieve the target weight and releases the selected combination into the packaging machine, where it is packed into bags or pouches.
As Rick Neill, senior technician from PLAN IT Packaging Systems, explains: “The Mars ComPak functions as a two-inone unit featuring a built-in scale. The process starts with product counting at the top, followed by the product dropping through our funneling system into the bagging area.
“The bags are then sealed, cut and discharged via the conveyor,” Neill states, while singling out the machine’s use-friend
ly HMI (human-machine interface) panel controlling both the bagger and the scale.
“This interface allows us to adjust parameters such as bag length, speed and jaw settings,” Neill notes.
“Another impressive aspect is its dual-station capability,” he continues. “The HMI manages both the weighing and packaging stations, configurable for weight or counting through its parameters.
“Our primary screen includes a comprehensive run button, activating the product release from the top weigh buckets.
“Inside the machine, we have a forming tube, pull belts, and a bag deflator to manage excess air, ensuring a flat package,” Neill states.
As Wirtz explains, the Mars ComPak machine has already proved to be a good fit for the WG Pro’s highly automated secondary packaging line installed and integrated by the Toronto-based engineering services firm Cyntek Industrial
The tightly synchronized secondary packaging system comprises one AFA cartoner (manufactured by Brampton, Ont.-based AFA Systems Ltd.), one AFA case former, one AFA dual case/carton closer, one AFA central conveyor, and six ABB FlexPicker “pick-and-place” delta robots.
In operation, the AFA machines take flat, unfolded cartons and assemble them into their final shape, ready to be filled with product.
Once the cartons are ready, the ABB FlexPicker robots take over, using their advanced vision system to locate, pick up and load the conveyed items or primary packages inside the formed cartons with utmost precision at very high line speeds.
“Each robot meticulously counts and loads its assigned products into the boxes, “Wirtz states. “The entire process is controlled by microprocessors.”
As Wirtz notes, the system is designed to ensure seamless integration and coordination between the various components. This involves synchronized control systems that manage the timing and operation of each machine, ensuring that the sachets are picked and placed into cartons smoothly and efficiently.
The integration also includes safety mechanisms and error-checking processes to handle any discrepancies or issues that arise during operation, maintaining the quality and reliability of the packaging process.

“The automation is seamless: carton erection occurs on the left, followed by the boxes moving through the line where they are filled, counted, and proceed to the end for ejection, weight check, sealing and date coding,” Wirtz relates.
“This line has reduced the need to have 20 people per shift,” says Wirtz, adding he’s looking forward to further efficiency gains with the arrival of more PLAN IT bagging systems in the future.
“PLAN IT Packaging Systems’ baggers will play a crucial role here, with each feeder having a bagger feeding into it— subsequently integrating the product into the line,” he says.
“This system can handle both corrugated and carton boxes with ease,” says Wirtz, adding this flexibility will be vital to support the company’s ambitious growth plans.
“We are currently exploring the establishment of a new facility in Tennessee or Georgia,” he relates, “while a major Canadian customer is looking to partner with us in an exciting initiative we’ve been aspiring to undertake for many years.
“There is no doubt that our advancements in automation are creating new opportunities for us to realize these goals.”

Venerable Toronto plastics extruder leverages proactive capital investment and intense R&D activity to cement its industry-leading credentials

Tracing its roots back to 1957, Polytarp Products is a real-life embodiment of the simple truism that there are no short-cuts to long-term success in the plastic products industry—especially for an independent family-owned business.
That said, the Toronto-based plastic films extruder is also a compelling testament to the virtues of hard work, sharp business acumen and proactive capital investment as requisite building blocks for a thriving manufacturing enterprise that just keeps getting better with age.
Nowadays employing about 180 people at a busy 150,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in the city’s north-end suburb of Downsview, the company produces over 40 million pounds of finished plastic products per year for customers across a broad and growing range of industries covering
construction, agricultural, food, automotive, healthcare, furniture, waste management and other important industrial sectors driving Canada’s economic growth and prosperity.
Specializing in producing premium-quality durable polyethylene film structures, the company’s diverse product portfolio comprises multiple types of products—from packaging to liners and films—in hundreds of lengths, widths, thicknesses and other variations to suit virtually every application in the nine key industries Polytarp serves with stellar customer service and professionalism.
“Our customer service is arguably our key core competency and competitive advantage,” Polytarp President Steve Ghantous told Canadian Packaging during a recent visit to the company’s landmark facility hosting 13 towering on-site silos holding up to 180,000 pounds of polymer resin pellets each to feed the plant’s continuous 24/7 production process.
“Nobody beats us on our service or our lead-times, which I believe are the shortest and most efficient in the business,” says Ghantous, who has just celebrated his 40th anniversary of working with the company founded by the late Paul Chitel.
As Ghantous explains, “We are totally focused on quality and service. We always look at the long-term picture.
“We have customers here whom I personally serviced when I was a sales rep here some 30 years ago,” Ghantous points out, “and that’s because we have never let them down with missed deliveries or delays.
“If someone puts in a custom order with us, we can have it on their floor within three weeks or less,” he says, “which is very rare in our industry.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s an order for a construction industry customer,” Ghantous elaborates, “or if it’s for value-added packaging of fresh meat or other perishable foods.
“Providing quick customer service is something that’s instilled in everybody’s mind at this company,” he reasons, “because it gives customers a one-stop supplier with close to a 100-percent fill rate and a100-percent on-time delivery rate.”
In addition to customer service, Ghantous cites product and market diversification as another important competitive advantage that enables the company to ride out any seasonal or cyclical variations affecting a particular market segment.
As he explains, “We are diversified with your commodity products as well as our value added-products—both are just as important for us.
“It helps us to deal with fluctuations as well as the economic cycles,” Ghantous states. “So, if the construction industry slows down because of high interest rates, for example, we can rely more on the food industry or automotive industry to make up for the drop-off.
“Being diversified makes you less concerned about seasonal fluctuations or sudden changes in consumer consumption habits,” he adds, “like buying less meat because of higher prices or cost-of-living issues.”
As part of the company’s continuous drive to diversify its product offerings in recent years, Polytarp has made significant inroads into the food packaging market—primarily in the processing and foodservice segments of the industry— leveraging its expertise in producing multilayer plastic film structures that offer superior barrier protection and extended shelf-life properties by combining polyethylene with nylon, EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol), tie and other polymers.

“These are typically packaging products that the retail consumer will not see at their supermarkets or grocery stores,” says Polytarp’s product manager Troy McCartan, “but nevertheless play an important role in the food industry’s value chain by keeping food fresh as long as possible until it makes it to the final point-of-purchase or a finished retail package.” Some examples of the food packaging products manufactured at the Polytarp plant include:
• The Super Polyfresh hot-fill bags and film for hot-fill packaging of liquid or semi-liquid products such as sauces, marinades, dips, salsa, soups and other acidic liquid foods requiring extended shelf-life in refrigerated conditions without the use of preservatives.
• Available in thicknesses of 2.5-mil and up, the nine-layer Super Polyfresh films and bags, along with the seven-layer Polyfresh Plus structures, can be used on both vertical and horizontal form-fill-seal machines, as well as on high-speed automated MAP (modified atmosphere packaging) equipment with gas-flushing capabilities.
• Vertical and horizontal form-fill-seal flow-wrap film. Suitable for both hot-fill and cold-fill applications, the Super Polyfresh , Polyfresh Plus and the five-layer Polyfresh flowwrap films are high-strength, freezer-safe packaging materials that can be converted into beef, pork, poultry, fish, grain and sauce pouches, freezer film, flexible packaging, dairy packaging, and other commonly used packaging formats.
• Super Polyfresh high-barrier bags, liners and film featuring an ultra-low oxygen transmission rate (OTR) that provides superior oxygen, moisture and gas barriers to help keep beef, pork, dairy products, sauces and other food fresh food fresh for longer.
• Polyfresh Gas Flush bags, liners and films, featuring exceptional seal strength to seal off oils and grease and prevent leakage, while providing superior oxygen, moisture and gas barriers for a multitude of fresh and prepared food products.
• Super Polyfresh, Polyfresh Plus and Polyfresh vacuum bags, manufactured with a strong three-way seal and tearaway notch for easy sealing and opening. Supplied in loosepacked cases for easy handling and use, the bags can be heat-sealed to protect the contents and lock in freshness of a wide variety of both food and non-food products, including cannabis, electronic components and medical devices, among many others.
While food packaging currently accounts for over one-third of the Polytarp plant’s output, McCartan and Ghantous both expect that share to grow even higher in coming years.
In the meantime, customers in the construction and home-building industries account for roughly half of the company’s production capacity—a result of the company’s unique legacy and prominence in these sectors.
As Ghantous recalls, founder Paul Chitel originally started up the company under the name of Dominion Poly Products as an animal feed business, before soon changing its focus as a distributor of protective plastic sheeting, layers of insulating foam with plastic covering, for local construction sites to safeguard their building supplies and materials from weather and other elements in outdoor environments.
“He was basically selling imported polyethylene tarps and purchased poly and foam to convert into insulated blankets. That’s is how the name Polytarp originated,” Ghantous explains.
“He was very successful at it,” Ghantous continues, “and as

his clientele grew and he needed more polyethylene to cover the insulated blankets during the GTA construction boom, he eventually bought his first extruder and started manufacturing the poly that was required.
Purchased in 1974, that first extruder was installed inside the company’s newly-constructed manufacturing facility where it still operates to this day, albeit with plenty of more people and machinery to make its steadily growing product range.
Today ranking as one of Canada’s largest privately-owned manufacturers of flexible plastic films, Polytarp installed several more extruders at the facility during the 1980s to serve the growing customer base—achieving the construction industry’s CGSB certification for the company’s Super Six Vapor Barrier product range in 1997, while also implementing the industry’s first-of-its-king recycling program for its trim and product waste.
By mid-1990s, the company made its first foray into the food industry by commencing production of food-grade
polyethylene bags and films, followed by a 1999 purchase of a first multilayer extruder and the launch of its signature Polyfresh line of packaging products for the food industry.
Shortly after attaining the global ISO 9001 certification for quality management practices in 2006, Polytarp installed a seven-layer extruder to make high-barrier packaging for fresh beef, pork and poultry products. Within three years that line was fully operating near capacity, which made the decision to purchase a bigger nine-layer line an easy one.
In 2010, Polytarp obtained the vaunted global FSSC-22000 food safety certification—incorporating all the pertinent HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) protocols—following that milestone with a 2012 installation of a nine-layer extruder to make ultra-high-barrier food packaging.
In following year, the plant installed three more extruders— including a three-layer and five-layer blown film lines—along with a laminator, a slitter and other converting equipment to expand its portfolio to PET and other laminate-base products.
The new three-layer extruder was purchased from Bandera, an industry leader for wider high speed production lines.
In addition to vastly improving the quality and performance attributes of its products, these multimillion-dollar investments also helped Polytarp to develop more sustainable packaging solutions for its customers, Ghantous contends, citing the company’s pending certification to the international ISO 14001 environmental management systems (EMS) certification that encompasses resource usage, waste management, environmental performance and other key sustainability criteria.
According to Ghantous, continuous capital investment is all part of life in the modern plastic processing industry.
“We bought five extruders, a laminator and slitter in the last 12 years,” he says, “representing a total investment of nearly $20 million in high-end, state-of-the-art machinery.
“We are continuously reinvesting in the food space because as the regulations continue to change, the customers keep coming at us with more complex requirements,” he points out,
“and this is very much a customer-driven business.

“As the raw materials used to make polyethylene keep changing, we have to upgrade our production capabilities accordingly,” he states.
“Using the right resins and polymers to make the right film structure is like having to upgrade your computer to run the right software,” he says.
“The need for us to continuously upgrade and improve our machinery or equipment is mandatory,” he says, “and speaking with our customer on a daily basis allows us to make sure that we always stay ahead of the curve.”
In addition to large-scale equipment expenditure, Polytarp is also strongly committed to its intense R&D (research-and-development) activities, maintaining an on-site lab equipped with cutting-edge instrumentation and testing equipment and staffed with highly knowledgeable science and technology experts.
“R&D is a massive part of our business,” Ghantous states. “We have invested heavily in our lab and its equipment because we and our customers need the flexibility to obtain a better barrier, a better seal, better material stiffness or whatever else they may want, and we have the equipment that allows us to do that.
“But it’s not just about the equipment: we have also invested heavily in our people.”
Says Ghantous: “One of our strengths is we don’t necessarily copy what’s out in the marketplace at the moment: we always strive to find out what our customer will need going forward.
“Hence, we do extensive in-house R&D and engineering with our own products, which involves a lot of ‘outside the box’ thinking,” he states.
“Whereas back in the old days we used to run two or three types of basic raw materials, today we have about 18 classes of resins alone to process, as well as a multitude of various additives, so you can imagine how important it is to have the knowledge and the brainpower to handle all that.”
Ghantous and McCartan both acknowledge the issues of plastic waste throughout the industry, they insist that a big part of the solution is the benefits that plastic packaging provides to the modern consumer society on a daily basis.
“There is no question that we as an industry have to do a better job of collecting, reusing and recycling the waste generated by the plastic industry,” Ghantous concedes, “but many
of the alternative options to plastic can be vastly more damaging to the environment.
“Some paper bags have 10 times the carbon footprint of a plastic bag when you consider how much energy it takes to produce it, along with all the pollution going into the air from the smokestacks you see at all those pulp and paper plants.”
According to Ghantous, solving the plastic pollution problem requires the creation of an adequate recycling infrastructure that will accept flexible plastic waste just as readily as it does with rigid plastics.
“The biggest issue with plastics is waste: we have got to be more responsible with how we’re handling the plastic waste,” he states.
“But when you look at the more advanced markets like California and some parts of Europe, you’ll see that they have a robust recycling program set up that make it easy for individual consumers to recycle all their plastic waste,” Ghantous points out.
“Plastic is in fact the easiest-to-recycle and reuse material out there,” he proclaims, “but we have to have a national system set up to do that, which is what the federal government should be focusing on.”
Adds McCartan: “As an industry, we understand the challenges that are there, but we’re already on the leading forefront of making sure that we’re reducing the amount of waste by providing consumers the with products and packaging that our customers request.
“With food waste being a huge national and international issue, our customers can use our food packaging products to create shelf-stable, longer shelf-life materials to reduce food costs for the consumers and reduce the amount of food waste,” McCartan states.
“So that is our primary focus here: the reduction of food waste and plastic waste,” says McCartan.
“I believe that it’s incumbent on us as an industry to make sure that we’re out there leading the way with our environmental products, systems and services as required by the consumers, ensuring that we are fulfilling their needs and wants on the recyclability and sustainability side.
“Our R&D department is continuously updating and working to make sure we match our products with what our customers and the consumers demand,” McCartan concludes, “and the environmental impact will continue to be our heavy focus going forward.”

As such, the Laval facility enjoys a very special status within the Sidel global organization, especially in its North American operations.
Housing over 5,000 square meters of production space and 4,000 square meters of office space, the Laval facility proudly operates as the Americas region hub for Sidel’s engineering, integration, digital and conveying activities, specializing in:
• Design and manufacturing of mechanical conveyors;

On the conveyor side of the business, Sidel Canada provides a comprehensive range of conveyors to handle both primary and secondary packaging applications.

“The equipment and solutions provided by Sidel Canada are based on the specific requests of our customers,” says technical sales director for North America Mike De Cotiis, who has been with Sidel for a remarkable 38 years.
“Many of the large CPG (consumer packaged goods) brands in beer, food, pet food, and home and personal care industries in North America have a piece of equipment or a service solution provided by our Canadian plant,” says De Cotiis, citing water bottlers, soft-drink manufacturers, juice producers, and wine and spirit companies as some of the plant’s most active end-use customers.

“Sidel Canada is very well-known for providing line design engineering services to beer and pet food manufacturers,” De Cotiis states, “along with providing equipment and service solutions to many other CPG customers in North America.
“On occasions when our expertise is needed globally, the Laval site supports other Sidel sites with project management and equipment production,” he adds, citing the plant’s extensive talent pool and vast knowledge base provided by some 60-plus engineers employed at the facility.
“The consumer goods industry is highly competitive these days,” says De Cotiis, “and it is experiencing numerous challenges such as a growing number of increasingly complex SKUs (stock-keeping units), operational efficiencies, labor shortages, etc.
“At the same time we are also experiencing an increase in the implementation of sustainable packaging, smart equipment and digital solutions,” he states. “These are the challenges Sidel is working hard to address and provide solutions for.
To help its customers address those challenges with superior machinery design and performance, the Sidel Canada plant incorporated a highly automated manufacturing process to fabricate, assemble and customize each piece of equipment produced in Laval.
“Our fully integrated sheet metal production includes a laser
cutting CNC machine fed by two automated multi-shelf towers to run autonomously 24 hours per day per day,” says the plant’s director of industrial operations Adrien Dagonet.
“It also includes two press brakes and nesting and bending programming software with features recognition.
“For plastic part productions, we recently upgraded our CNC router for a high-speed machine,” Dagonet relates.
“All the programming is now performed using Mastercam software that included full machine simulation to ensure safe programs are released to the operators.”
Adds Dagonet: “Our operations are driven by a state-of-the art ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system directly connected to multiple systems, like VLM (vertical lift module) towers, to manage our inventory, or our engineering vault that takes care of product life-cycle management.”
As Dagonet explains, Sidel’s engineering team makes extensive use of 3D computer simulation technologies to predict and analyze equipment performance and feasibility before it is even built—resulting in significant manufacturing cost-savings and high customer engagement and satisfaction.
“Sidel’s digital and packaging services in particular are always in high demand,” he says. “The expertise in these two solutions is unique to Sidel and unmatched by the competition.

As De Cotiis points out, “We always aim to deliver high-performing packaging solutions to our customers, so Sidel’s equipment, packaging, and engineering solutions are customized to meet our customers’ specific needs.
“In addition, we provide a variety of services including packaging design, maintenance, line assessments, molds and line conversions, line improvement, rPET bottle production, 365 technical assistance and training,” he continues.
“Additionally, Sidel’s SSO e-commerce platform provides fast and tailored access to our customers to order any services they need.”
According to Claudia De la Vega, Sidel’s regional communications director for the Americas, sustainability is always at the heart of the company’s equipment design and performance attributes, which is entirely fitting for a trail-blazing enterprise that has achieved significant breakthroughs in the lightweighting of plastic bottles used on its equipment, as well as commercializing the use of containers with high PCR content, among other pioneering efforts.

Retail Council of Canada is developing a pragmatic multistakeholder strategy to address packaging sustainability

For the vast majority of Canadian consumers, a shopping trip to their grocery store or any other retail outlet often provides the best opportunity to get close and personal with the myriad of packaging materials, designs and formats used by CPG (consumer packaged goods) companies to protect and market their product. This may include daily food staples, big-ticket durable goods, and just about everything in between.
And while packaging may not always be the ultimate deciding factor behind their every purchase, there is no question about the critical role it plays in the consumers’ decision-making process, however subtle it may be.
Likewise, there is little doubt that
Canadian consumers are more mindful and aware than ever before about the environmental impact of their product packaging, with numerous surveys and studies confirming their growing preference for more sustainable packaging solutions with minimal carbon footprint and end-of-life waste.
For retailers large and small, this growing consumer demand for more sustainable packaging is arguably one of the biggest continuous challenges they have faced this century, with its inherent complexity and widespread ramifications. It is also a source of keen anxiety and frustration, spilling over through all links and sectors of the consumer value chain that drives the country’s economic growth and prosperity.
With no “one-size-fits-all” solution in sight, retail companies across all
sub-sectors are finding themselves under relentless regulatory and public pressure to come up with revolutionary game-changing remedies for a problem that is neither all of their own making or within their capabilities to resolve on their own.
While the packaging industry has made big strides in recent years to develop more sustainable, recyclable, reusable and renewable plastic solutions to address specific environmental shortcomings, those efforts remain far removed from delivering the sort of unified, multisector strategy needed to make significant advances toward achieving the vaunted Circular Economy model of resource production and consumption.
In this context, there is much to be said for the growing efforts by the Retail Council of Canada (RCC) to form the basis for a coherent, comprehensive and inclusive framework to encourage Canadian retailers to partake in a proactive, industry-wide effort to reduce the amount of packaging waste generated through all stages of the country’s vast retail supply chain.
In light of RCC’s extraordinarily large and diverse membership, as well as the cumbersome patchwork of waste reduction policies and regulations governing waste collection and recycling from one Canadian jurisdiction to another, achieving this lofty objective is not going to be a quick overnight fix by any stretch.
“As the largest retail association in the country, we now represent over close to 54,000 storefronts, including small, midsized and large retailers in every category,” RCC president and chief executive officer Diane J. Brisebois told Canadian Packaging on a recent visit to the association’s national headquarters in mid-town Toronto.
“We represent food retailers, drug chains, quick-service restaurants, and various specialty retailers of apparel, footwear, jewelry, furniture, sporting goods and the like—a huge variety of different types of retailers who have different packaging and different packaging challenges,” Brisebois explains.
“We have learned that the most significant progress we can make is by bringing various players together to the table.”
“It’s not just about the packaging itself for us,” Brisebois points out. “It’s also about where the packaging comes from.
“We have local retailers who source domestically,” she says, “but we also have many who source from across North America and around the world, which is not so unusual anymore.
“When we’re looking at circularity and sustainable packaging, we have to look at it through various different lenses,” Brisebois continues, “because what is of top concern for a grocery retailer may be totally different for a fashion retailer.
“We are challenged, as an association, to make sure that we understand the entire world of sustainable packaging,” says Brisebois, stressing the need for cross-sector cooperation and collaboration to address the sustainability issues effectively.
“We can’t really function in silos; we need to have a very broad perspective.
“It is important for our organization to play a key role in addressing the issue with so much depth and breadth,” Brisebois elaborates, “and we have learned from working with our member-companies that the most significant progress we can make is by bringing various players together to the table.”
According to Brisebois, the Council’s upcoming Retail Sustainability Conference—scheduled for Oct 16, 2024, at the Toronto Congress Centre—will provide a telling representation of all the hard work the organization is doing across Canada to advance the cause of packaging sustainability.
Featuring high-profile sustainability experts from Canadian Tire, Loblaw Companies Limited , Procter & Gamble and Unilever, among others, attending the second annual Retail Sustainability Conference will provide an outstanding networking and learning platform for packaging professionals from all segments of the industry, according to RCC’s vice-president of sustainability Michael Zabaneh.
“Driving a Circular Economy will be a big part of the [conference] theme,” Zabaneh relates, “but we will also get into other issues, like reducing greenhouse gas emissions across their supply chains.
“We will also be hosting a special halfday workshop the next day,” he adds, “where we will take a deep dive into packaging with technical sessions structured specifically for manufacturers, retailers and other stakeholders to share their best practices in driving more sustainability into their packaging.”

numbers at this year’s event, not least because of the numerous EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) programs either already in the works or on the verge of implementation across multiple Canadian jurisdictions, which will impact many stakeholders across the retail value chain.
“I think one of the reasons why our sustainability conference was so successful last year was because it provided a platform for senior folks in the CPG industry to literally sit down and talk with all their senior sustainability peers from retail, as well as government representatives and various environmental groups,” says Brisebois.
As Brisebois points out, RCC is uniquely positioned to further build on its position as the leading advocacy group for the country’s vast retail sector and its supply chain partners.
This in part because of its strong organizational structure, whereby the Council has full-time staff operating in every single province to lobby on behalf of its membership on a broad array of issues ranging from EPR to curbside recycling and waste recovery, among others.
“So if RCC members have an issue in

“It’s been a huge benefit for us and our membership,” says Brisebois, citing RCC’s influence and authoritative input on many important government decisions related to packaging, sustainability, and a host of other vital public policy issues such as:

• Product & Food Safety & Related Regulations;
• Health & Safety;
• Human Resources;
• Loss Prevention & Cybersecurity;

“We represent about 70 per cent of all
retail sales and 85 per cent of all food sales in the country, so it’s a big responsibility,” Brisebois observes.
In terms of RCC’s packaging sustainability focus, “I think the biggest challenge, and where the Council is doing a lot of work, is to try to get the different levels of government to work together to harmonize their policies as much as possible,” she points out.
“The more we harmonize them, the more we can scale up to move our combined sustainability agenda forward,” says Brisebois, citing the country’s patchy record of interprovincial cooperation on many issues, with environmental stewardship often being a volatile and divisive bone of contention.
“Understanding that sustainability and circularity are both domestic and global issues, it is also important to our members and their supply chain partners that RCC continue to advocate for harmonization with other important trading partners around the world.”
Says Brisebois: “Ensuring our legislators do not work in isolation and focus on harmonizing sustainability regulations, such as those guiding more environmental-friendly packaging, allows us to avoid a patchwork of rules, unnecessary costs and increases our chances of meeting our combined environmental goals.”

material recovery facility to give them an idea of what’s actually happening on the ground, what the state of the available equipment is, what recovery looks like, what contamination looks like, and so on.
“One thing that struck me is that most of those people had never been to a recycling facility before then,” Zabaneh points out.
“That’s the scary part,” adds Brisebois. “This speaks to our concerns with the development of policies without having the
correct data or information on hand to make well informed decisions.
As Brisebois reiterates, “Providing consumers with more transparency and keeping them abreast of the investments and progress made around packaging reduction, for example, is key to building trust and changing purchasing behaviours for the betterment of the environment.”
According to Brisebois, cross-industry transparency and collaboration are essential pre-requisites for overcoming consumers’ anxiety and skepticism.
As she points out, “It is extremely important to have recognized and respected purpose experts who can, in fact, confirm that whatever the information we put out there is correct, and we need to be more vocal and visible in providing that information.
“We need to find a diversity of voices singing from the same hymn book,” Brisebois sums up, “because at the end of the day we all want consumers to make the right choices both for themselves and the planet.”

Growing complexity and importance of produce packaging decision-making unveils the need for harmonization of sustainable packaging options

Fresh produce packaging is critical to fresh produce supply chain sustainability. Said differently, a produce packaging decision is a sustainability decision! What does that mean, and why does this matter more than ever?
Fresh produce supply chain sustainability depends on the form and composition of fresh produce packaging. The function provided by fresh produce packaging—from containment and convenience to communication and protection—can be unfortunately overlooked, or worse, ignored as concerns grow over packaging waste and pollution. As such, it is imperative to recognize that important social, economic and environmental outcomes are dependent on produce packaging choice.
These sustainability outcomes include providing affordable food, enabling access to healthy food year-round, ensuring food safety, minimizing food loss and waste, meeting labeling and traceability, and maximizing industry efficiencies to minimize its footprint.
Growing concerns with packaging waste should supplement rather than overtake the produce packaging decision-making process. Admittedly this increases what is already a complex process.
The fresh produce industry has already adopted many solutions to mitigate packaging waste, while continuing to explore sustainable packaging options.
These include elimination (e.g. lightweighting or full elimination), reuse, design for increased recyclability and recycling, incorporating post-consumer recycled content, and substitution with to alternative materials such as compostable or recyclable non-plastics.
The Canadian fresh produce industry has been making concerted efforts to reduce the amount of plastic packaging used throughout it supply chain, but a complete plastic ban would be highly counterproductive for both the industry and the consumers, according to CPMA.
To accelerate the adoption of sustainable produce packaging, the Canaddian Produce Marketing Association (CPMA) released the Sustainable Packaging Guide for Food and Fresh Produce (www.sustainable-packaging.ca) in April 2024. The Guide’s decision-making framework, tools and case studies help identify solutions that mitigate packaging waste while not adversely impacting packaging functionality. The Guide’s material-agnostic approach is designed to help the industry navigate the growing complexity of produce packaging decision-making.
This is a challenging discussion as consumers, as well as policy-makers and regulators, may not fully appreciate the interdependency between packaging forms and materials and achieving the desired level of supply chain sustainability. Focusing on a single factor, such as the presence or absence of plastics in packaging, inadvertently fails to account for the imperative to balance the many important supply chain sustainability outcomes.
This complexity is, unfortunately, giving rise to a both patchwork of government regulations across multiple regions, alongside divergent supplier requirements from major retailers, increasing the risk of meeting the desired produce supply chain’s sustainability goals. This risk is a direct result of increasingly dissonant packaging requirements by region, customer, or even produce category.
What is the solution to this complex challenge? It is applying a principle that has been instrumental in enabling produce supply chain efficiencies for many
years: harmonization.
The fresh produce industry must work together to develop shared guidelines that harmonize and regularize, to the fullest extent possible, sustainable packaging options. Not unlike the Consumer Goods Forum’s Packaging Golden Design Rules (GDR) that have informed packaging decisions over the past few years, a set of sustainable packaging guidelines purpose-built for the fresh produce industry is a rapidly emerging priority to mitigate the regulatory and market risks as outlined above. Consequently, the produce industry is taking action. Starting in June 2024, CPMA, in partnership with U.S.-based Western Growers Association, is working with sister organizations across North America to develop sustainable produce packaging guidelines that will both aim to minimize produce packaging waste while enabling the balance of produce supply chain sustainability outcomes.
CPMA believes this is a critical step to increase the adoption of a sustainable packaging portfolio that supports all fresh produce commodities.
Collaboration between produce commodities that share common packaging functions has begun and will help drive economies of scale and increase supply chain sustainability—including reducing fresh produce packaging waste.
The industry aims to release the guidelines to the public by the end of 2025.

Recyclable paper packaging a key component at the heart of the Circular Economy in action

The Paper and Paperboard Packaging Environmental Council (PPEC) is a trade association representing the environmental interests of the Canadian paper packaging industry.
PPEC members consist of companies from Canada’s paper packaging and recycling sectors, representing key components of the paper recycling value chain.
PPEC members are not only providers of recyclable paper packaging, but they are also processors of collected paper materials, and act as end markets by buying back used fibres to use in their operations.
PPEC’s mill and packaging converter members operate across Canada and manufacture the three major packaging grades that PPEC represents: containerboard (used to make corrugated boxes), boxboard (used to make boxboard cartons), and kraft paper (used to make paper bags).
Mills produce containerboard and paperboard from raw materials, using recycled content as their primary feedstock, reducing the need for virgin fibers, and transforming recycled paper into new paper packaging products.
As end markets, mills also buy back bales of collected recycled paper fibers from business and residential sources to use in their operations.
The bales are then pulped at the mill to transform it into linerboard or corrugating medium to produce what’s collectively called containerboard, boxboard, or kraft paper.
The end result are big rolls or sheets of paper that are then shipped to a converter, who transform the raw packaging for customers’ needs.
Any waste material from the converting process (such as corrugated cuttings or boxboard trim) is collected on-site and sent back to a mill for further recycling.
In addition to mills and converters, PPEC’s membership also represents parts of the recycling and waste management sector.

recycling operations that focus on collecting and processing valuable recyclable materials. PPEC also represents companies specializing in waste resource recovery who provide recycling and waste reduction programs and services to communities and businesses.
Recycling is a key issue for PPEC and its members because it is essential to the Canadian paper packaging industry’s long-standing Circular Economy model.
Environmental sustainability, waste minimization, and prioritizing the use of recycle content is an inherent part of our industry’s business model, and it’s been that way for decades.
PPEC is proud of our industry’s Circular Economy approach to managing paper packaging products, which are continually collected and recycled through residential and business recycling programs across Canada—allowing them to be remade into new paper packaging products again and again through the important act of recycling.
PPEC represents the environmental interests of the Canadian paper packaging industry through its advocacy and communication activities and provides thought leadership and analysis of environmental and recycling issues through its well-known blog.
PPEC works to promote the Circular Economy of Canada’s paper packaging industry, correct misinformation, provide
real facts about paper packaging, and keep members updated on key issues through its members-only monthly newsletter.
On the advocacy front, PPEC represents its members in consultations and discussions with the federal and provincial governments on issues such as recycling, Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging and paper, environmental claims, landfill bans, and sustainable forest management.
Because recycling is a key issue for our members—who rely on recycled materials as their primary feedstock— PPEC closely monitors EPR packaging recycling programs in Canada, which are in the midst of significant transition.
Most provinces are either in the process of developing or transitioning to full producer responsibility models— where obligated producers fund and operate recycling programs—from existing program models where producers only fund the costs of programs operated by municipalities.
PPEC is watching the transition closely, as we hope it will result in greater harmonization of programs and economies of scale; established end markets so collected materials can be sold and recycled; improved consumer education and participation in properly separating and preparing recyclables; less contamination and a better supply of cleaner materials; higher recycling rates; and more consistent and comparable recycling data.

Canada Plastics Pact maintains focused ambition in the next phase of the journey to eliminate plastic waste and pollution

The Canada Plastics Pact (CPP) embarked on an ambitious journey nearly four years ago with a transformative vision: a Circular Economy for plastic packaging by 2035.
Launched with 41 founding partners from across the plastics value chain, the CPP was established as a bold solution to address the long-standing environmental, economic, and social challenges caused by plastic waste and pollution.
CPP was designed to enable collective action to drive rapid, unprecedented change in the plastics industry and society as a whole.
Adopting global targets set by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF)’s New Plastics Economy Initiative, Plastics Pacts around the world— including CPP—released the first phase of a roadmap to guide and inspire action to address this global crisis collectively.
We at CPP are committed to the global targets and will soon release the next phase of our journey.
Setting ambitious goals helps to accelerate progress. While it was understood from the outset of CPP that not every target would or could be met by 2025, we took on the ambitious goals of the EMF to inspire and motivate dramatic change.
In an ever-evolving landscape, our journey began by focusing on learning what it will take to achieve ambitious global targets in a Canadian context.
While Canada is a small market in the global economy, our policy and regulatory conditions are comparatively advanced, and as a nation we benefit from significant wealth and technological advancement.
We have the tools and opportunity to overhaul entrenched pathways and invest in radical change for a future that protects the interests of Canadians and the Canadian economy, while charting a

path that can benefit other nations and accelerate their journeys.
The CPP launched with four working groups to drive our roadmap, and we now facilitate 10 working groups to tackle all elements of a solution to the plastic crisis.
We have published numerous guidance documents, reports and tools for use in the industry.
These include support for eliminating unnecessary and problematic plastics, design guidelines to improve recyclability, and guidance to increase the use and integration of post-consumer recycled (PCR) content in plastic packaging.
The CPP’s most recent annual report (2022) confirms that CPP Partners are actively eliminating unnecessary and problematic plastics, and have increased post-consumer recycled content in their portfolios by 32 per cent since 2020 (CPP’s baseline year).
The 2023 annual report will be published at the end of this year: watch for its release to learn of our ongoing progress.
What we have learned underscores the scale of the plastic crisis and the complexity of transitions needed on our way to a Circular Economy for plastics.
Enabling collaboration that is pre-competitive amid broadly ranging stakeholders can lead to significant impacts and innovations.
CPP is proof that by working together, we can go faster and further than we could alone.
As we enter the next phase of our
journey towards 2035, the CPP has grown to more than 100 partners who are collaborating to innovate and scale the solutions, processes and partnerships needed to keep plastics in the economy and out of people, animals and nature.
In fact, alongside our peers in the Plastics Pact Network, companies and organizations participating in Plastic Pacts are outpacing the global average.
The latest report from WRAP UK highlights the removal of more than 360,000 tonnes of problematic and unnecessary plastics, equivalent to billions of items no longer in circulation, and a nine-percent increase in the amount of plastic packaging recycled.
In Canada, we know that accelerating progress requires improving data collection on plastic flows, closing infrastructure gaps, and charting strategic pathways for innovation towards a shared vision. Our key priorities for this next phase of work are:
• Reducing, Reusing, and Redesigning Plastics;
• Optimizing the Recycling System;
• Using Data to Improve the Whole System.
• Establishing a Centre of Excellence for Plastics Knowledge Transfer.
From the start, we understood that plastic waste and pollution cannot be solved by one company, one organization, one sector, or one country.
We are working locally, nationally and globally to break down silos and transition to circularity. To continue to achieve real measurable progress, we must continue to work collaboratively and strategically with the entire plastics value chain at the table.
We invite the most ambitious companies and organizations in Canada’s plastics value chain to join our mission— systems change is accomplished when the whole system works together.

Packaging format crossovers for fresh design ideas / Noelle Stapinsky
Afew years ago, I included a fondue cheese product in a stand-up, resealable pouch in my Checkout column. That shift from the traditional cardboard box housing a vacuum sealed foil pouch packaging absolutely thrilled me, as not having to worry about the box of cheese tipping over and leaking some of the wine-based brine was a welcome change. Since then, I’ve noticed many food manufacturers switching to the stand-up pouch format—cookies, crackers, frozen fruit and even pancake mix, to name a few. Having the ability to seal an open product not only helps with preserving the contents, but also with organization. And while I’m particularly thrilled about pancake mix becoming available in such a pouch, it’s not as visually exciting as Carnaby Street candies, specifically the chocolate covered gummy bears that I first discovered at a chocolatier in Muskoka. They’re odd, but I’m obsessed with them. Refrigerated, frozen or room temp, these little morsels are perfect for a sweet treat or mixed into ice cream. I love the Carnaby’s candy jar design graphics, and the package always seals up quite well between uses.
Over the past couple of years, I have been travelling a lot for work. Of course, this means keeping a constant supply of airport approved cosmetics and toiletries. I first picked up a travel-size evolutionofsmooth (EOS) shaving cream at my local Shoppers Drug Mart as an alternative to the small aerosol cans, and partly because I always worry about my carry-on getting flagged. As it turns out, this cream provided a superior shaving experience, while delivering on its promise of 24-hour moisture. Impressed, I decided to check out the regular-sized format. It’s a soft plastic bottle, true to the brand, with a pushdown pump to

disperse the product. Compared to aerosol foaming cans, you don’t need as much product and, based on past experiences, it’s often a gamble as to whether the dispensing valve will actually work. It’s not like you can try it out in the store! The other thing that has always bothered me about aerosol cans is that annoying rust ring they leave in the shower or on porcelain surfaces. Thanks to EOS, another problem solved.
Like most Ontario adult residents, I am relieved that the recent strike at the LCBO (Liquor Control Board of Ontario) was a short-lived affair. In recent years, many LCBO stores have become hotbeds of packaging innovation with many exciting new products and packaging formats. As a deserving winner of the 2024 Canada’s Product of the Year Award, Port Dover, Ont.-based Frisky Beaver has served up a real packaging gem for its Risky Beaver White Blend and Risky Beaver Damn Good Red varieties with an environmentally-friendly paper bottle manufactured for the vintner by KinsBrae Packaging. Claimed to be the world’s first commercially available paper bottle design for non-carbonated beverages, the bottles are made from 100-percent , recycled paperboard with a food-grade pouch inside. It’s five times lighter than a glass bottle, which makes it easier to carry and likely saves on shipping costs,
and the company states that it uses up to six times less carbon to manufacture it.
Lastly, let’s talk beer. This is market near and dear to my heart, as I spent 10 years as a craft brewer, with a front-row view of the industry’s collective shift to the 473-ml Tallboy cans. While I doubt that this trend will end any time soon, it have noticed many breweries starting to offer core brands or special releases in the smaller 355-ml cans that used to be the industry standard. The one summer launch that stuck out for me was the Lager Mix Six pack from Anderson Craft Ales of London, Ont. Featuring Anderson’s Ontario Lager , a New Zealand , Vienna , Czech Pilsner , Cerveza (Mexican-style), and a straight up Premium Lager, this limited-time collection offers plenty of diversity and variety to entice consumers to appreciate all the different lager styles out there. Considering that lagers take much longer that ales and IPAs to ferment at lower temperatures, it is also a commendable testament to Anderson’s general message that line speeds and efficiencies are not the only thing that matter to the modern beer-lovers. Long may that spirit live on!
