NOVA NEWS:

The first edition of NovaNews in 2026 is ready and you can find information about the market situation and the price effect this unfortunately has.

Also, we have a status on the Peracetic acid product and classification.

Maybe the article about Thermophilic bacteria is of interest to you?

And last but not least - we are participating in several events - which we inform you about.

Market Update

The year began relatively calmly until we reached the month of March. When the war in the Middle East broke out, it immediately affected global oil prices and thereby had an indirect impact on our logistics, packaging, and raw materials with immediate effect. Within just a few weeks, the situation escalated, and our previously stable raw material markets are no longer stable in terms of either supply or price. Raw material prices are now volatile and, for many suppliers, are only quoted on a daily basis, as the world is too uncertain to lock prices in for longer periods of time.

The world has changed in just a few months, and we all have to act accordingly.

Rising raw material prices, and especially packaging costs, have already left their mark on the cost of manufacturing our products. Since March, we have mapped our needs as thoroughly as possible to ensure that we have had sufficient raw materials in stock to produce the volumes we have sold. Fortunately, we have not yet been affected by shortages. This could happen, and it is a situation we will of course do our utmost to avoid.

If you have any ”stories/experiences with Novadan products” from your country that could be of interest to our other partners/ distributors, please share it with us by emailing details (and images) to hoy@novadan.dk

Or if you are anxious to know more about some topics, which you would like us to write about - again please contact hoy@novadan.dk

May ’26

We are in a situation where price adjustments on our products may occur at short notice.

We cannot say how extensive these will be or which products will be affected; this will depend on developments and how the situation around the world evolves. At the same time, it must be acknowledged that this is unlikely to be just a short-term crisis in Q2, but rather something that will extend over the coming months and quarters. The after-effects of the significant increases in oil prices have spread throughout all parts of the supply chain. What has affected the industry applies to all manufacturers of cleaning and disinfection products, as well as companies producing similar products.

On the next pages, you will find an overview of different raw materials and the development in prices.

How does it look right now – and for Q2/Q3,

2026?

• There is still a normal supply of raw materials. However, this is a situation that can change quickly, and we are currently paying very close attention to supply security.

• Further price adjustments are likely to occur in the coming period.

• Raw material suppliers are uncertain about pricing and often only provide daily prices for raw materials.

• Plastic packaging (e.g. our cans, drums) has been heavily affected by the situation and has had a significant impact on rising prices.

• International logistics of both raw materials and finished goods are affected.

• At this point, we cannot determine whether raw material prices will continue to rise or decrease.

• Acetic acid and nitric acid are among the raw materials that are currently increasing significantly in price due to shortages.

• Certain alcohol-based raw materials (IPA/isopropanol) and glycols are rising sharply due to shortages but unfortunately also affects our surfactants and other ingredients due to this.

• All alkaline raw materials are affected and are increasing significantly. However, supply remains normal.

Thermophilic bacteria

What is Thermophilic bacteria? A fashion phenomenon?

New measurement methods developed over the past few years have made it possible to identify Thermophilic bacteria. As the name/term suggests, it is temperature-dependent.

Thermophilic bacteria can be, and often is, independent of the general Total bacterial count / Total Germ Count. This is of particular importance in cheese production, and in the past it was often incomprehensible to dairies that the cheese / cheese quality could vary quite significantly despite having the “same good and high milk quality.” This should be understood in the sense that the milk quality was measured based on Total bacterial count, which was previously the only available parameter.

After the relevant measurement method became known, Novadan’s Agro department, together with representatives from SEGES’ Milk Quality department at the time, was involved in a series of tests and trials to investigate what could explain the continued presence of these specific Thermophilic bacteria despite the fact that overall cleaning results and bacterial counts were acceptable.

The path to the conclusion was long, but the outcome was that, when dealing with the above-mentioned problem, the temperature profile during alkaline cleaning must be assessed differently

For example, it would normally be stated that alkaline cleaning can be started with a water temperature between 60 and 80 degrees Celsius, and that there is a good chance of achieving a satisfactory result as long as one remembers to ensure that the final temperature does not drop below approximately 40–41 degrees Celsius. This remains valid when we are talking about general Total bacterial count.

However, when the problem is Thermophilic bacteria, it turned out that the guiding principle should be that during the first 3–4 minutes of the alkaline cleaning process, the temperature must be kept above 65 degrees Celsius. Many people assume that if one starts, for example, at 75–80 degrees, it “should be sufficient,” but this is far from always the case. The cooling of the cleaning solution often occurs much faster than expected, depending on whether the stable environment is open or closed.

Seasonal variations also play a significant role under relatively open housing conditions.

This may require additional investment in hot water capacity, as well as a thorough explanation to milking machine technicians regarding the various possible changes in the cleaning automation. Most often, these technicians are not familiar with the concept of Thermophilic bacteria.

MEJERITEKNISK SELSKAB

Danish Society of Dairy Technology

On 6 May, we will participate as speakers at the Danish Society of Dairy Technology (Mejeriteknisk Selskab), where we have prepared a presentation under theme “Operational savings – small actions, big impact”. The focus will be on how relatively small day-to-day adjustments can lead to noticeable improvements in operations, quality, and financial performance.

Ronni Rasmussen will present concrete cases from the daily use of NovaInsight, demonstrating how data and insights are transformed into practical solutions in the production. In addition, we will share experiences from our collaboration with the Agro department, where we support farmers dealing with high thermophilic bacteria counts – from identifying root causes to implementing targeted actions that deliver documented results.

The presentation is grounded in real-life practice and illustrates how close collaboration across the value chain can create value for both farmers and dairies. We look forward to an inspiring day of professional dialogue and knowledge sharing.

Mejeribrugets Dag 2026

Dairy Industry Day 2026

At Dairy Industry Day 2026 in Herning, we once again had a very successful day filled with dialogue and strong professional engagement. As in previous years, we were among the speakers, where we shared our knowledge and practical experience with NovaInsight, focusing on solutions and opportunities that create value for the dairy industry - not only as an optimisation tool, but very much also as a solution for traceability and documentation within the daily quality management at dairies.

In addition, we were present with a small stand in the shared exhibition area, which was well visited throughout the day. This gave us an excellent opportunity to meet both existing and new customers for informal yet valuable conversations about current needs, challenges, and potential future collaborations.

We are very pleased that so many stopped by – and we truly appreciate the strong interest.

PERACETIC ACID

Updated EU Autorisation of Peracetic Acid – Applicable from 1 May 2026

The EU has updated the harmonised classification and labelling of peracetic acid. The new rules apply throughout the EU and will become mandatory from 1 May 2026.

The change is based on new scientific knowledge and affects classification and labelling only – the quality, composition, and use of the products remain unchanged.

Novadan has updated labels, product information, and safety data sheets (SDS) in accordance with the new rules.

For most of Novadan’s peracetic acid products, the change does not result in any change to the hazard

pictograms. However, for Oxidan Special 150, the new classification means that the product will also be labelled with the “Skull and Crossbones” pictogram going forward, as the concentrated product is classified as acute toxic by skin contact

Updated labelling may entail specific requirements for sale, use, and storage under national legislation. In Denmark, this includes requirements for submission of a poison notification and storage in locked, clearly marked poison cabinets or poison rooms.
