According to health and wellness definitions, wellness has a direct influence on overall health, which is essential for living a healthy, happy, and fulfilled life. The primary difference between health and wellness is that health is the goal and wellness is the active process of achieving it. Knowing the distinction between the two matters for a number of reasons, by recognizing that we cannot always choose the state of our health, we do have the choice to make active decisions toward wellness. Facts you should know about Long Term Care I imagine you know someone, have a friend or family member who’s either a caregiver or need LTC (Long Term Care). Something to think about. . .

Let’s start with: What is LTC risk?

•It is the inability to care for yourself. •LTC is typically required when chronic diseases, orthopedic problems or Alzheimer’s disease restricts you from performing “activities of daily living.”

Facts: If you reach age 65, there is a 70% chance you will need LTC.

•80% of women will need LTC. •3 years is about the average period of LTC •7.6 million Americans receive LTC at home & 80% of their care is provided by unpaid family caregivers who are negatively impacted. •Over 1 million Americans live in assisted living facilities. •Alzheimer’s is the number 1 cause.

LTC Coverage includes:

•Nursing Home, Assisted Living, Home Care, Adult Day Care, Hospice Care and Alzheimer’s Facilities.

Three (3) ways to pay for LTC: •If you’re wealthy, you can pay out of pocket. •If you’re poverty stricken, the government will pay. •Or You can purchase LTC insurance.

SOUTHERN

SAXOPHONIST

Mark Baker

With over 20 years of performing under his belt, saxophonist/arranger/composer Mark Baker has cultivated a quality of music that resonates through a person’s soul and touches their senses. His music possesses an inviting lyrical quality music that tells harmonious stories, displaying variation of emotions; including sounds of gladness and exhilaration to more poignant and contemplative melodies. In his music, Mark strives to maintain his own distinctive style while spanning a broad emotional range. His versatility in essence comes from being inspired by Jazz, R&B, Funk, Blues, and Rock tunes. Mark remembers fondly of listening to bands such as the Bar-Kays and Con Funk Shun while growing up. In fact, one of his dreams as a young musician was to play live in front of 13,000 people (the capacity of coliseum at that time). That dream was realized years later as he performed solo for 40,000 people at the Memphis in May Beale Street Music Festival. For more information regarding booking Mark Baker, visit his website at www.markbakersax.com

They fled by boat and eventually were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard. After staying in refugee camps in Guam, the Philippines and Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, they settled down in nearby Fort Smith. Her brother was born 1979.

Her Passion

Tran found her work passion in television news starting as a production assistant in college and moving up to producer, reporter and anchor.

Family First…making the right choices

She worked in Fort Smith, Arkansas; Tallahassee, Florida and Memphis, Tennessee before leaving local news to freelance and raise her two children who are now 16 and 13. Tran was a reporter and anchor at ABC 24/UPN 30 in Memphis from 2001-2012. While in the Bluff City, she received numerous awards in television news, video production, leadership and volunteer work.

Today there are 20 chapters across the country including Rochester, New York where she lived for three years and Atlanta, where she now lives with her husband Scott, son Jackson, daughter Ava and furbaby Woodford. Tran runs her own production company called On Location With Tran, producing and hosting videos.

Getting To Know Tran Bui Smith

Her inspirations, challenges, fears, passion for fashion and more…

Tell us who or what inspires you?

My parents Thu and Bich (Judy) Bui are my greatest inspiration. In 1975 they made the brave decision to flee Vietnam during the Fall of Saigon in order to give their children a better life. We came to the U.S. with nothing. They faced challenges, worked multiple jobs, made sacrifices and managed to put four kids through college. They did it with grace, grit, faith and humility. When I want to complain about something minor, I am reminded of their courage and I count the blessings. Their work ethic and drive are what keep me going and thriving.

What makes you most excited?

Personally, seeing my children pursue something they didn’t think was possibly makes me excited because I get to witness them overcoming their fears and insecurities. Professionally, I still love creative storytelling with images and sound. Even though I left television news in 2005, I am happy when I’m producing and sharing stories about people and businesses. Everyone has a story that should be recognized and celebrated.

What stops you from giving up when you are challenged or frustrated?

The fear of failure sometimes stops me from going after my goals, but regret is my biggest fear so that prevents me from giving up. We have been given a gift. We have one life, go all in. Now that I’m in my midlife, it’s also not as scary to take chances because I am armed with more knowledge. I have an incredible support system, “So what if I fail?” mentality. At least I tried and gave it my all.

We know you have a love for fashion; tell us the history behind your passion for fashion?

I grew up poor so I wore a lot of hand me downs and handmade clothes. As I got older, I became so fascinated with fashion magazines that I would beg my mom, who’s an incredible seamstress to recreate looks for me. I think I loved stylish clothes even more because I had to wear school uniforms from 1st to 9th grade. In 2010, RSVP Magazine in Memphis named me one of the Top 10 Most Stylish Memphians. I was actually giddy about that one! When it comes to fashion, I love one-piece outfits, solid colors and styles that stand out. Right now, I have a very well-known obsession for jumpsuits.

What would be your key ingredient to success while living the American Dream?

For me, the key to success is to remember that you’re not all that. You may have the achievements, accolades and attention one day, but they could be gone the next. Remain humble. Remember where you came from, who has helped you along the way and there’s always room for improvement.

What’s next for Tran? Any special projects or productions?

I am trying to take my video production and video marketing company “On Location With Tran” to the next level. I’ve added new team members across the country. I have additional partners in advertising, marketing and branding. Most of my work is in Atlanta and Memphis, but my ultimate goal is to go global. When people come to me and say, “I don’t know how to create relevant videos.” or “I’m scared to be on camera.” My response, “I got you!” Ultimately, I want to help businesses see their full potential. Also important, having fun in the process. That’s why it’s not only important for me to surround myself with talented people, but those who are kind and fun loving. SPOTLIGHT NEWS Myeka Johnson

Growing up lower class, with uneducated parents, and with lack of resources, Myeka Johnson knew she had what it takes to be successful, but lacked what was needed to get there. So, the idea to create a general resource company was born. Myeka “MJ” Johnson was born in Pelzer, SC. She left home at eighteen to join the military, but before this major decision, she began her entrepreneurial journey. During her senior year in high school, at just age seventeen, Myeka started MJ’s Be YOU, LLC. The business originally started as a non- profit. The goal was to help those with an idea, talent, or skill to turn those things into a profitable business. In 2016, the company name was changed to Direct Consultants, LLC. After hiring project managers and interns from UNCC Charlotte to help with big projects, Direct Consultants, LLC was located in four states; South Carolina, North Carolina, Illinois, and Georgia with business partners and clients in each location. Direct Consultants, LLC worked with small businesses, celebrities, professional athletes, etc. This helped give the company more experience working with a variety of companies simultaneously. It also helped give clients several resources for their idea, business, or brand. Myeka Johnson, INC (MJI), recently converted to a one hundred percent virtual company with the goal to convert all office locations into MJI Studios. After fifteen years of experience, MJI is a general resource company for all businesses and career choices. Myeka has been pretty busy this year so far. She is currently writing a book and purchasing property. She’ll be traveling back and forth between New York and Charlotte while running MJI. While doing all of these things, she is in the middle of a three-month solo trip, which she planned last year but wasn’t able to go due to the pandemic. At thirty-two, she is the successful CEO of MJI, who has accomplished a lot, and is enjoying life one day at a time.

Candace Rice Her Road to Hollywood Today’s new-aged influencer must juggle countless titles and maintain multiple hats in order to reach “icon” level, but for Candace Rice her road to Hollywood is not that story. Candace got her start in the mass media communications world with her on camera hosting talents and witty commentary for various platforms including Blacktree TV, Revolt TV, and has been featured in over 35 commercials and TV shows. Candace Rice is the fun-loving, praying, fan-favorite, voice of reason addition to hit reality TV series, MTV Floribama Shore, which is currently in its 4th season. The 2nd half of Floribama Shore airs September 2021. Floribama shore made recent network history debuting as the highest rated MTV show premiere the network has seen in 4 years. Candace Renee stunned fans as the first African American woman on MTV to rock an afro.

Power Player

She has defined herself as a power player outside the reality TV space in the maintenance of multiple avenues of influence in entertainment, humanitarianism, and the beauty space by using her platform to give back to underprivileged children of Memphis, TN; the city that bred her prior to her TV debut.

Healing the Community

Candace Renee founded 501c3 URBN Therapy which will provide a directory that allows children, teens, and adults of any age to obtain resources for free and affordable therapy sessions with therapists that look like them; providing a familiar outlook that contributes in changing the stigma of “therapy” in at risk communities with the ultimate purpose of re-establishing black households and family values to strengthen the legacy of African American people and breaking generational curses. URBN Therapy also sponsors #OperationChristmasGiveback which is an annual event which surprises qualified kids and teens with shopping sprees during the holiday season. She is continually setting the blueprint amongst millennials taking the stand to heal the community.

Entrepreneur Beauty & Health skills In addition to her community work, Candace is helping improve the health of those suffering from skincare issues in which she’s a passionate advocate for educating followers on the long term, beauty and health benefits of taking care of their lifelong canvas (their skin); through the development of her self-formulated, clean beauty company ran by her and her family. Yaaganix is committed to hand crafting holistically powerful and potent formulas with ingredients sourced from local American farmers. Integrity in formulations is vitally important to Candace; as she weekly shares the process of her father hand crafting and hand packaging products, in addition to awkwardly satisfying products, whipping videos to her 350K+ fans on social media.

Loving the Luxury things in Life Candace, TV personality, entrepreneur, actress and model has exuded grace, the perfect balance of funny in collaboration with the beauty space, also an organic desire to improve the world with her energy and voice; and the world has been responding. She isn’t just the big haired, fan favorite belle from MTV; but she’s a multi-dimensional TV host, humanitarian, entrepreneur, multi published model, and content creator.

StephLynn’sFitnessTips

Fitness tips that will help develop an AMPLIFIED mindset about fitness as you start on your personal journey.

Start with a positive mindset towards fitness and healthy eating.

Have your mind set on being successful in this endeavor. I believe in saying/writing positive affirmations to myself before beginning any new task. Using powerful sentence starters such as “ I am,” “I will,” or “I can” help create a positive thought flow.

Write down your fitness goals.

What goals are you trying to achieve? Are you trying to lose weight, tone your body, maintain, or just start moving?

Choose the activity that is fun and aligns with your goals.

Zumba has always been my favorite form of exercise. I love dance, toning, cardio, and socializing with others. I love it so much I became an instructor. For me this is a one stop shop on fitness. Although I engage in other activities (strength training, yoga, and fitness challenges) I always return to Zumba! Find what works for you so that you can maintain your interest and get the results you’re seeking!

Invest in new workout clothes.

My motto is “Exercise Pretty.” When you look your best, you feel confident and alive. This is also a great way to reward yourself! Select comfortable shoes that are appropriate for your activity.

Adopt a new way of eating!

Along with the exercise, eat food that will fuel the body and allow you to have the best workout ever. Avoid food that makes you feel sluggish and heavy. Opt for lighter meals such as grilled protein, veggies, and fruit.

Become a part of a fitness family.
