Celebrity Contributor for The Cover Magazine attended the 51st Annual 2020 NAACP Image Awards hosted by Actor, comedian, writer and game show host Anthony Anderson of the popular ABC sitcom Black-ish. Eggleston enjoyed the annual live celebration which honors outstanding performances in film, television, music and literature. Chris dressed for the evening; celebrated the success of others; mixing and mingling with celebrities; greeting and meeting actors and entertainers, Jamie Foxx who won the NAACP Image Award for his movie Just Mercy; actresses Angela Bassett, Jill Scott, Yara Shahidi and the lovely Tichina Arnold best known for her role as Pam in the early 90’s sitcom, Martin.

Chris made his way around the venue networking and greeting Journalist, Rowland Martin, comedians, entertainers, A-listers and other celebrities dressed in high end designer fashions. Rhianna, the pop star, musician and business mogul turned humanitarian received the prestigious President’s Award. The award ceremony was held in Pasadena, California at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, the famous 3000 seat performance venue, where the late legendary Michael Jackson unveiled; the Moonwalk in 1983.

Why I became an Urban Educator JAMISHA D. JEFFREY, Educator, 3rd Grade Instructor, B.A., M.A., Detroit, Michigan As a native Detroiter, my goal upon graduating college was to serve the community in which I grew up in. By teaching in Northwest Detroit, I am able to set an example for my students and show them that they do not have to be a product of their environment. Instead, they can make their environment a product of themselves. I inform them each and every day that they can excel in anything they strive for. Knowing that I’m making a difference in the lives of tomorrow’s future means the world to me.

The Cover: Cover Jamisha, what factors influenced your decision to become an educator? For some it an inborn passionate calling at a young age. For others it was a deeply personal experience. But no matter what the motivation; educators have profound reasons for choosing their path.

What do you recall about the day you were asked to close your classroom during the COVID-19 Pandemic?

It was Friday, March 13, 2020, one day after our governor announced that all K-12 schools would be closed for three weeks due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

I only had a small handful of students attend school that day due to many parents being uncertain and worried about their children potentially contracting the virus at school. At dismissal time, my students and I said our goodbyes “See you in three weeks, Ms. Jeffery!” they shouted “Stay safe!” I bellowed back to them as they got in their family’s car. No one had any idea that this would be the last dismissal of the school year.

WORKING REMOTELY DURING COVID-19 How did you prepare to ensure your students receive adequate resources to stay inspired, encouraged and stay focused while teaching them remotely?

At the time, I knew that although the school building would be closed, I had to do everything in my power to still ensure that my students were receiving the education they needed to make progress and master skills while being at home. I didn’t want any of them to regress. It was March and they had made so much progress since the beginning of the year. I was so proud of how far they had come. Once I made it home, I frantically learned everything I could about teaching remotely.

Google Classroom was my “new” classroom and I tried my best to make sure that it was just right for my students and I.

My style of teaching now required me to record lessons using a plethora of camera equipment and video editing software. My dining room has become a place for me to hold office hours and conduct video calls with my students. Teaching remotely is completely different from teaching in an actual classroom.

My students were no longer learning together in their usual environment.

Why was it important for you to connect emotionally with the students, and what did you do to motivate and prepare them for online classes?

I could no longer give out high fives and hugs. Remote learning means that they have to adapt and adjust to sitting in front of their computers at home all while trying to stay focused and self-motivated.

They are only third graders and learning remotely is not an easy task! Their parents had to become their teachers and I found myself receiving tons of messages asking questions such as “How can I support my child at home?” and “What do you usually do to keep them motivated?” I hadn’t realized just how much work I was putting in to properly execute a lesson in my classroom!

What challenges have you faced working remotely, and what are you determined to do as an educator to ensure your students succeed?

These past ten weeks have not been easy. Some days are more challenging than others but as an educator, I push through. I remind myself each day as I log in to our virtual classroom that I am still making a difference just virtually. A pandemic will not stop me from helping my students reach their learning goals for the school year. A pandemic will not stop me from putting my best effort to teach and reach my students.

What have this experience taught you about working remotely?

This experience has taught me how to be even more patient than I already was and most importantly it has reminded me why I chose to become an educator. I will continue to serve as an educational advocate and a difference maker for my students even outside of the classroom. With resilience and triumph, anything is possible!

LEO PRESTON Jr., CEO AND PRODUCER OF THE ARTISTS LOUNGE How I got started

I remember as a child playing several instruments; one was league and bass guitar just like my Uncle Anthony Rainey played. I also played uncle Michael Rainey’s trumpet, in elementary school. I played the violin and taught myself how to play the piano. One of my cousins, Robert “Bubby” Rainey was a professional in the music industry. I recall him coming and telling us stories how he opened up for one of my favorite artists, the late James Brown, known as the “Godfather of Soul.” Cousin Robert was also a trumpet player; he played for several groups; he had pictures of the groups; which inspired me to dream big. Bubby was different; he had the swag of an entertainer, he dressed different than most, he was sharp at all times, every time I saw him; he was driving a sharp red mustang.

Inspired by the best

Uncle Bubby’s experiences made me want to experience the lifestyle of an entertainer. I used to hear stories about my dad playing in a band in Chicago and Pine Bluff, Arkansas; and various other places, playing the bass guitar. Sometimes he would come and play the flute and saxophone, which he taught himself. In college I sang with a group call Spiller’s Illusion a few times. My man, Derrick Spiller was a cold bass player who I learned a lot from. My next experience came from a group out of Memphis, Tennessee called, The Followers of Christ. This is where I really learned how to be a professional. The leader of the group Steve Johnson would tell me to turn around and sing to the audience. Because I was always looking around and admiring the great musicians in the band. I also looked up to Willie Johnson, III of Javon Records, an awesome musician, songwriter, performer and producer. I studied these guys, the first music video that we were in; was because I had been previously cast in the movie, Twist of Fate; produced by my good friend, Mr. Larry Clark. In the movie we sang a song called It’s Time to Pray.

Tell us about your Single?

I’m producing a single titled “Nothing” It will be released soon. This single is going to be hot! and off the charts, because; it has a message that is much needed today. The Single, “Nothing” relates to everything that’s happening in the world today. My music is always positive, uplifting and powerful. I aim to reach the younger generation because they are our future. I’m in the studio with a powerful producer, Johnathan Davenport; he brings out the best in me; he trains and teaches the best voice techniques, any artist could ever dream of.

I have seen some of the greatest gospel musicians and singers that the industry has to offer; in Little Rock Arkansas. The gospel quartet industry, led by Bishop Kenneth L. Robinson is a powerful organization. My first opportunity to sing in front of Dr. Bobby Jones was when I joined the Missouri gospel Guild led by Minister Chuck Spearman, the owner of WESL Radio station, and evangelist Terry Gold. This is where I learned about the gospel industry, and being an independent artist, I conduct workshops and meeting with other independent artist to discuss ideas and opportunities.

While news organizations around the country report a myriad of different stories and differing opinions, the facts surrounding Covid-19 shouldn’t be a topic for debate.

All the health experts agree, that as fatigued as we are by stay-at-home orders, and health precautions, we need to continue to act in a manner that keeps us safe. Coronavirus infections have not decreased, they have increased in the last several weeks, and we need to remain vigilant.

The best way to think about the virus, and its transmission is to picture a sneeze – and the spray of a very fine mist that is expelled. That mist is expelled every time someone talks, sings, coughs or even breathes. The way we attempt to limit the spread, it to limit the amount of mist that lands on you, your clothes and your face. If it gets into mucus membranes like the moist passages of the mouth, nose or even the eyes, infection becomes more likely.

There has been no confusion over masks – the scientific community has privately advocated for masks since the beginning. We do know that in countries that mask wearing is common or compulsory, that the rates of infection have dropped drastically. So, act in your own best interest, and do what we know works.

Wear a mask, whenever you are in public. Keep extra masks in your car, purse and your pockets. Change your mask, whenever you have been in close contact with other people.

Wear your mask properly – it needs to cover your mouth AND your nose. (If it feels too comfortable, then it isn’t doing the job).

Wash/sanitize your hands every single time, before and after you touch your mask. Otherwise, you will contaminate the mask.

Wear the mask properly. If it has fan folds, the fan folds should be facing down. Think of these folds like pockets. If you wear the mask with the pockets facing up and outward, then particles from infected people will be trapped in the pockets that are resting against your face. We already know the virus is tiny enough to pass thru these masks, but having a mask is better than being unprotected.

Wash your mask between uses. Hot soapy water will work. If you have a few tablespoons of bleach or laundry sanitizer, that is even better.

Consider a face shield if you have to be in close proximity to people. They are readily cleanable, and the plastic shield literally prevents viral particles from being sprayed onto your face. This is particularly important for those who are working in customer service jobs like wait staff.

ARTISTIC, BEAUTY AND CREATIVITY OF A NAIL TECHNICIAN

Monchel Wilson age 35, a mother of seven, born and raised in Memphis TN. Monchel started her journey to become an entrepreneur boss years ago; but with the ups and downs of life and being a mother, it wasn't easy. Monchel had dreamed of becoming a nail technician; but had many failed attempts in doing so.

Getting Fired In 2017, Monchel was working as a nursing assistant on the weekends and ended up getting fired. She recalls saying “I was so mad about it” but as she sat on the curb of the nursing home parking lot waiting on her ride, she had time to think about her next move. At that moment; she realized this was her opportunity to make her dream of becoming a nail technician a reality.

Monchel no longer had a job holding her back; she made a decision to attend school to become a licensed nail technician.

Making a Financial Decision Monchel invested her income tax refund check, paid her bills up for six (6) month, while she attended school to make a career change. She studied hard; received her license, an became a certified nail technical; and the rest is history.

She knew it was meant for her to become her own boss because she couldn’t keep a job and was barely able to pay her bills. I knew it had to be something better for me said Monchel; she knew taking her nail business seriously was a must. Monchel loves helping and building confidence in others by creating and designing beautiful nails.

“Feeling like God has chosen me to be great” Monchel said “I couldn’t have picked a better way to make a living; I felt like God had chosen me to be great.” She also feels that God chose her to show that he is capable of turning a broke, single mother of seven, no guidance on life; into a God made Boss!

Monchel is more than a nail tech; she’s a creator, who is making things happen with the opportunities God gave her when she became an entrepreneur.
