A SURVIVORS STORY Joyce Ann Parrish-Badie, Parrish-Badie grew up in Dora, Alabama, a survivor who persevered. After many years of scarring from abuse and neglect, the “Tears of Joy,” seem to blanket her face and her heart. Badie experienced brutality, a head on collision and is the survivor of rape, abuse, various threats such as; gun violence, and many other traumatic experiences. As a survivor, she has learned that life throws you many hard balls, but you must be ready and strapped with your “Whole Armor” to come out on top.

While defining what an entrepreneur is during times of hurt and being alone; she writes lyrics that she considers soul searching. Joyce has a talent for writing books such as her first novel, “The Next Lifetime.” A novel about preserving through tough times in life.

Joyce is also multi-talented; she sings, produces, directs, acts, dance and models; and so much more.

Joyce, a recent business owner; trained as a medical assistant and a D.N.A. Lab Technician for MUSC Diabetic Research Studies. In February 2000, while caring for hospice patients she established her own home health services, “Caring with HisHands.”

She inspires others to always be positive, and grateful. Joyce continues to use her many talents to uplift and motivate others. She feels strongly that each day she’s given a second chance at life.

Joyce has entered a new journey with her animated family inspiration, titled; “Wilbur and Simmy.” She was inspired to write “Wilbur and Simmy,” A fun and inspirational story that teaches others how to love and look past one’s appearance without judgment. The book was also written to raise awareness about bullying, it empowers young readers to recognize the power of knowledge, encouragement and acceptance.

Joyce feels that she has finally reached a higher level in life, and still climbing. She expressed how grateful she is for her success, and will continue to move forward in faith on her journey to help and inspire others. When supported by her love ones she feels complete.

Violinist, Richmond Punch Richmond Punch, a violin virtuoso who delivers a riveting, dynamic, explosive, and powerful performance! Richmond, a native of Dallas Texas, graduated from a top-rated Arts Magnet; Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. He honed his craft and earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the famous Juilliard School of Music in New York, and received a Master of Music degree from the prestigious Yale University. He specializes in live jazz violin music for special events; including corporate concerts, festivals, weddings and worship. Mentoring and Giving Back

For more than 20 years, Richmond has given much of his time to support non-profit organizations. He has worked with various school districts, HBCUs, and other colleges and universities across the country. Richmond currently resides in the Atlanta area.

Aspiring Photographer and Videographer Lauren Purifoy

Lauren Purifoy, an avid Videographer and Photographer, who aspires to own a business in that field.

Lauren first became interested in videography and photography during her 10th grade year of high school; while attending church one Sunday, she recalls seeing a media team; that piqued her interest and eventually she grew very curious about the craft, one that she now calls her “craft.”

Lauren loves beautiful things; she attributes that to being born in the month of May and a Taurus. After finding herself immersed in the world of videography and loving it, she eventually came in contact with a family friend, Mr. Calvin Miller, the owner of a photography business. He allowed her to shadow him; to build up her confidence enough to take on complete projects, and gain experience on handling the camera and the Live Panasonic Switcher, for a craft she now calls her passion.

Some of Lauren’s best photography and videography work can be found while working as an intern at Dreamland Productions and The Cover Magazine in 2019.

Lauren will be graduating from the University of Memphis this spring with a Bachelors in Communication, with Focus in Film Video productions.

In this exclusive edition; I chose to celebrate Black History month and International Women’s Month, to honor the legacy and a pioneer in the fashion industry, Dr. Ophelia DeVore-Mitchell, who paved the way for many black women and men in the fashion and entertainment industry.

In this issue, I was also inspired to write about the history of black Americans, healthy life styles, music, fashions, and successful achievements.

Although women have made progress, there are still areas where women face obstacles because of gender, race and unwanted sexual advancements. Women owned businesses are on the rise, but women still represent the minority of business owners. I support, and promote women entrepreneurs, because this is an era where ethnicity and diversity are no longer the gap that divides us; but unifies us.

Black history month is a special time for me, a time to celebrate my heritage, and show homage to others who have paved the way; as they struggled to achieve the American dream. It’s a time to celebrate the achievements of women, whether social, political, economic or cultural. Today’s woman is the Queen of her future. We should rejoice, and lift her up as she wears her royalty crown.

It’s how her story played out - until the day wild ambition consumed her to create a beautiful piece of jewellery to symbolise the bond her mum and Lanashane shared. She came across an image of an adorably beautiful three-circle necklace, perfect for all it epitomised. The first circle represented her mum’s love, the third represented her love and the middle circle profoundly was their bridge between Heaven and Earth. It was a hand-embroidered piece, a technique unbeknown to her at the time. Being creatively unskilled and without the correct braid, it was an over ambitious attempt to replicate the design. Her first attempt was a shabby, shoddy disappointment to say the least.

It proved a challenge to create her piece of love, and it was more than sufficient to propel her newfound creativity this soon became her grief crutch. As time went on, she delighted in her creations – not only distracted her from the woes…she was connecting with her mother. Well known for her creativity as though by magic, Lanashane felt her mum creating pieces through her. Little by little her skill improved and all the while, she established a connection with her mother through each piece of art. A few months later she proudly declared BelleLana Collection to be a tribute to her mum.

Within months her grief crutch turned tribute, was curated and showcased

by SA Fashion Week. An unanticipated moment that saw her titled - Fashion Jewellery Designer. A momentous achievement that redefined her set of circumstances. In no time, invitations to participate from Milan, Paris and San Francisco Fashion weeks were received. BelleLana Collection art pieces were also curated and exhibited at Africa’s largest art exhibition, showcasing 500 pieces by 130 artists. BelleLana Collection had the privilege to exhibit 10 of its art pieces - epitomising the beauty of her mother’s soul interwoven into the love of a mother and child that knows no bounds.

Lanashane’s sorrow turned into an inspiring story behind a brand on the rise. One that is fuelled by passion and love, a trendy wearable art collection that epitomises the beauty and love for the designer’s mother.

In the process she became a woman with resilient courage and high accomplishments beautifully steered by her soul purpose. She’s proud to say “I am not what happens to me, I am what I choose to become.”

My Vaccine Experience Kris Eckland

As a nurse practitioner working in a surgical intensive care unit, I was able to get vaccinated earlier than most. Our facility was offering both the Pfizer and the Moderna vaccine, and employees were randomly placed into either group. I ended up in the Moderna group. I had heard about people experiencing headaches, and feeling “flu-ish” for several hours after getting the second dose, so I made sure to schedule my vaccine for my day off. But I ended up only having a bit of a charley horse for a couple days, very similar to what I experienced with my last Tetanus vaccine.

I know a lot of people are hesitant to get the vaccine for multiple reasons, including reasons of trust. I understand that, I really do, because we’ve been let down before; especially recently by our government during this epidemic. But this vaccine has been given to millions of people, with very few reports of severe side effects.

I am currently working in San Francisco, California, and here; less than 350 people have died from Covid- 19. It’s still too many, but it pales compared to the over 1500 people that have died in the much smaller city of Memphis. But the state and local government in San Francisco made a huge effort, with universal mask mandates and a lot of other measures to slow the spread of infection. They included the homeless, immigrant and marginalized communities in their efforts, and they offered help to those struggling financially because of the pandemic.

If you are questioning whether you should get the vaccine, “I want you to think about who benefits if you DON’T get the vaccine?” This vaccine is the precious thing on earth right now! If you don’t get it, it means there is more vaccine to go around.

It is certainly your right to make your own health care decisions, and vaccination is one of those decisions.

Because It is a fact, that African American and Latinos have a higher risk for death than Caucasians. So, make your decision based on facts, not fear.

Honoring Dr. Ophelia DeVore-Mitchell “Black Royalty” Dr. Ophelia DeVore-Mitchell, known for her pioneer efforts in the fashion, beauty and entertainment industry. She was a Model, Producer, entrepreneur, international businesswoman, CEO and Publisher of The Columbus Times Newspaper and pioneer in the “Black is Beautiful” movement.

Exemplifying Excellence

DeVore exemplified power, pride, presence and beauty in African American women. A former model and longtime business executive, she started one of the first modeling agencies for black models, which helped launch the early careers of actresses Diahann Carroll and Cicely Tyson, among other celebrities.

One of the first mixed-race models in the United States, Dr. DeVore was born in Edgefield, S.C., in 1922, to parents of German, French, Native American and African American heritage. In 1933, DeVore was sent to New York City to live with her aunt and to further her education. She graduated from Hunter College High School and attended New York University.

DeVore was also a part of the Civil Rights movement and personal friend of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; Ralph Abernathy, Coretta Scott King, Dick Gregory, Louis Farrakhan, Joseph Lowery, Julian Bond, Betty Shabazz, Al Sharpton, John Henrik Clarke, Jessie Jackson, John Lewis, just to name a few.

Charm School For Girls

DeVore also opened The Ophelia DeVore School of Charm in 1948, a charm school for young black women to learn etiquette, poise, posture, ballet, speech, self-presentation and confidence. The school, which closed in 2006, reached its peak between the 1960s and the 1990s, and at times graduated about 100 students in a class, says James D. Carter, DeVore’s son, who took over the charm school for a number of years and ran other aspects of various DeVore businesses.

Randall K. Burkett, curator of African American Collections at MARBL, says the collection represents black pride for women. DeVore’s charm school taught women how to present themselves confidently, allowing them to set and achieve higher goals for themselves and expect equal treatment and opportunities.

The school counts as its alumni entrepreneurs, businesswomen, actresses, models, news correspondents, judges, doctors, and a New York City chef and restaurant owner, among others. “What she was communicating, through all of her enterprises, is that you have to see yourself as a beautiful person, as a person of authority and confidence,” Burkett says.

Modeling, Working for Ebony Magazine and Representing Notables

Dr. DeVore began modeling in 1938 at the age of 16, working primarily for Ebony magazine.

In 1946, she and a few friends co-founded Grace del Marco Modeling Agency; in addition to Diahann Carroll and Cicely Tyson, the agency represented such notable figures as Richard Roundtree (“Shaft”), Gail Fisher (“Mannix”); Trudy Haynes, one of the first African American female TV reporters; and Helen Williams, one of the first successful African American Super models. The agency sought to encourage the media to portray African Americans in non-stereotypical ways.

DeVore regularly worked with fashion icons such as Christian Dior, Ralph Lauren, and Ceil Chapman. In a personal letter written on July 17, 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., thanked DeVore for being a part of “the great democratic crusade of our era.” Her inspirational story will move you to believe in yourself and achieve your dreams.

Lifetime Achievements and Honors Dr. DeVore received many honors during her lifetime, but her most important accomplishment was being given an opportunity to affect the world on a national level. In 1985 President Ronald Reagan appointed her to the President’s Advisory Committee on the Arts. In 2004, she was honored by the fashion Institute of Technology and the Fashion Arts Xchange, Inc. for her contributions to fashions and entertainment. She was also one of 75 women included in photographer Brian Lanker’s 1989 book, I Dream a World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America.

She launched a cosmetics company catering to African American women, and took over the Columbus Times, a daily newspaper for the African American community in Columbus, GA. She was appointed by President Reagan to the John F. Kennedy Center Committee on the Arts in 1985, and has been involved in many community programs throughout her career.

In her continuing mission to create a fashion-oriented culture for African Americans, DeVore started a fashion column that appeared in The Pittsburgh Courier, a black newspaper. In the 1950s she was one of the hosts of the ABC-TV show, Spotlight on Harlem. This is thought to be the first program produced by and for African Americans.

Shortly before her death she was interviewed for the black-themed news site The Grio. Ophelia DeVore told the reporter: “I wanted America to know that beauty isn’t just white.” To learn about another incredible woman who had a big impact on the fashion industry, read about the Ebony Fashion Fair created by Eunice Johnson.

The Columbus Times and African American History

The Columbus Times, which Ophelia DeVore-Mitchell ran as its publisher.

After several decades, she turned the paper over to her daughter, Carol and son-in-law, Helmut Gertjegerdes. The current publisher of the newspaper is DeVore’s granddaughter, Petra Ophelia Gertjegerdes. The Columbus Times has a strong presence in the community. It emphasizes positive stories featuring African-American history and culture as well as other minority groups. The Paper sponsors many events, such as the Queen of Africa, Black Expo and Community Choice Awards.

Her Timeless Beauty She redefined beauty, she will always and forever be remembered as a timeless legacy. Ophelia DeVore-Mitchell died peacefully on Friday, February 28, 2014 at the age of 92.

Prince William October, 2006 - February, 24, 2021

Prince was special. When we 1st laid eyes on him, he stood out from the pack. My husband noticed that immediately. He was the leader. My husband encouraged me to take him home and I did, but honestly it didn’t take much cohesion because he was the most adorable and cutest dog I’d ever seen. He was smitten with me as well, almost instantly.

I named him ‘Prince William’ because of his gallant prance and strut, as though he thought of himself as being born from royalty. The truth be told, he was actually considered a Mutt. One parent was a white Maltese, the other a gold Pomeranian. I added William in his name because it sounded closer to my maiden’s name which is Williams, hence the name evolved as Prince William.

Prince for short.

Prince never left my side. He literally followed my every step. Prince was my shadow for 16 years of my life. He adored me so much. He wouldn’t even eat when I was away from home. He would go into a literal fasting mode. But the minute I walked into the house and he saw me, he would greet me with great joyfulness and enthusiasm; at that point he would then begin to eat. He wasn’t dogmatic about food such as most dogs. You could leave your plate unattended, and he wouldn’t touch it. I tried to fed him a McDonalds hamburger and a chicken nugget once, and he refused to eat it. What dog does that? I’ve personally never seen one.

His most favorite thing to do was going for walks. OMG! He would spin around in circles, jump up and down, and lick my fingers whenever he saw me grab his lease. Prince would lick my fingers excessively until I put the lease on him, and we were out the door. At times, he was so excited and happy that he would whimper like a newborn baby. Absolutely no shame!

Prince adored children, but was a barker around adults. I think he wanted to let the adults know in the only way he knew how, that he was the top dog. He was still the Prince of this Castle! And I agree.

He will forever be my little Prince Charming in my heart.

Candy is an actress, author, mom, and Executive Producer of The Face of Rap Mothers Show, which, like her two-book series, is comprised of rap and hip-hop mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, etc. working to build better futures through entrepreneurial and solopreneur efforts. The truth is she had an abundance of weight to lose. It took her many years to get to the point of admitting that she needed help, asking for help, and then realizing that she had to do something about it.

Sometimes I can’t believe that almost five years have passed! Wow! How times flies when you are having FUN! Most might not combine the words weight loss and FUN in the same sentence, but I do! It took me many years to get to the point of admitting that I needed help, asking for help, and then realizing that I had to do something about it. Every weight loss journey is so personal and unique to the individual. I had to find a way to make the experience of losing weight pleasurable for myself. The truth is I had an abundance of weight to lose. My highest weight was 405lbs. I was in denial and I needed help. I did not seek help right away and went to lose about 20lbs on my own before deciding to have Bariatric Surgery September 21, 2016 where my recorded weight was 387lbs.

I had heard many horror stories about Bariatric surgery, but I have also heard of the many successes as well. After talking with women that were very serious, I decided to move forward with the process.

Yes, I was very afraid! Not of having the surgery, but about failing and not doing a great job with this. I lacked discipline and I knew it!

However, I prayed about it. Read self-help books and decided that my experience could be my own, if I made it my own.

One day while in Wal-Mart Shopping, there was a shirt that I found that said “Live the Life You Imagined!” That statement hit me like a ton of bricks and stuck with me. I wore that shirt on the day that I went to see my surgeon for beginning photos and measurements.

I later wrote down some thoughts for myself about how I would “Live the Life I Imagined”. It started with the realization that my weight loss, moments of revelation, acceptance, determination, motivation had to be different from what I had done in the past. No longer would I keep professing verbally that losing weight is always so hard! Surely, there has to be joy along the way-right? No longer would I keep eating bland foods!

No longer would I sit back and not ask for help! Nor would I do activities that were not fun anymore. Last, I wanted to change my appearance and be sexy! No drab clothes or looking the same ever again. I realized that I wore the same hairstyle for over 10 years! Now I can’t even wear the same hairstyle every month! A total transformation had to happen on the inside of me. I had to work on my emotions, self-confidence, and develop values that worked for me, To Live the Life I Imagined, I had to CHANGE and become transparent! In transparency discuss and say things that were on my mind, seek out options, and talk openly about the Bariatric process.

After Gastric Bypass my stomach was smaller- the size of an egg, my food choices were limited initially. After six months of protein shakes, soft foods, I was encouraged to try different types of food to see what my body would handle and reject.

After surgery there is not a real blue print on how to eat, so for a foodie like myself, this left too many options, I still needed structure. The nutritionist advised me to eat all of my protein, vegetables, and last try a small serving of carbs in that order. I could not digest meat such as beef, pork, sometimes chicken, or turkey products, so starting with protein did not really work for me. However; I do love fruit, veggies, fish and seafood. I started doing research and discovered that I enjoyed a Pescatarian Vegetarian way of eating. My diet now is mostly plant based. So, I started with vegetables first, shop for protein, and then all the other items.

When I go shopping, I have a method and I follow this strategy. I start in the area that I call the “Free Zone.” The “Free Zone is the area right in the front of the store that has all of the veggies and fruit that anyone could ever want. In the “Free Zone” I am able to eat freely without having to count calories, fat, or carbs. I focus next on protein. I visit the Seafood counter for fish and shrimp, then I am on my way to dairy products in search of Greek Yogurt and cheese. After wards, I look for beans, some salad toppings and dressings, popcorn, and maybe a snack that I truly want. Everyone knows that I love salty snacks! It is okay to indulge sometimes, everything in moderation! I can have some things in moderation, I trust myself with food.

Remember, I promised that I would seek out activities that were fun to me! I have always loved dance so I enrolled in Zumba. Zumba is fun, sexy, sassy, and it brings out that pretty girl side of me. This is where I love free flowing hair, belly dancing skirts, tambourines, pretty workout clothes, make-up, and jewelry! Yes, I do, exercise in my jewelry and with make-up on. I call it Exercising Pretty! Initially, I started with 10 minutes, 6 months later, I could dance for 30 minutes 3 times per week, one year later 60 minutes and I attended classes four times a week. I enjoyed Zumba so much, I decided to get my license to become an instructor. I wanted to do something that would keep me accountable, in front of people, and share a love for a form of exercise that works the entire body. The body you see now is mostly Zumba designed.

I started to enjoy exercise so much that I started doing other forms of exercise such as water aerobics, walking, yoga, and one day I found myself in the weight room wanting to lift weights. This is the STRONG side of me. I might not have on make-up; I am here to really get serious and work. I wanted to tone my body to avoid a lot of loose skin. I do have loose skin, but it is not always noticeable. I am not really concerned with the skin so much as the progress and the way my body is shaping up. Wow! oh Wow! do I have some nice arms; my mom calls them guns.

Losing so much weight has changed my appearance tremendously, and I’ve tried all different styles of clothes and wigs. You never know what I might wear from day to day.

For me, changing my appearance is a reward to myself and gives me a boost of confidence. I actually like purple, pink, and blond hair. Shopping is now fun and enjoyable because I can wear what I like. I would rather reward myself with clothes, jewelry, workout equipment, and traveling than food. Rewarding myself is a high form of self-care for me, and it also is a motivator as well.

In 2018 & 2019 I rewarded myself by attending the Bariatric Babe Conference in Daytona Florida. Seeking help for me did not mean sitting in support groups with self-pity, complaining, or not finding solutions to weight obstacles and challenges along this journey. I needed a positive fun upbeat approach to handing challenges. At the Bariatric Babe retreat there were chances to be a part of the fashion show to show your transformation, exercise clinics, meeting panels with experts to help you with healthy choices, positive talk, plenty of pictures, and selfie moments. I also met some of the most AMPLIFIED women that were on the same journey of living a healthier lifestyle. We have all branched out and formed our own individual programs, but we interact often to build a community for healthy living.

Many noticed my weight loss and started joining my Facebook groups for information about Bariatric surgery, Zumba, healthy eating, and I found my platform started to move beyond women that only had Bariatric Surgery. I started teaching Zumba classes weekly, accepting motivational speaking engagements, teaching information sessions on following the Pescatarian way of eating. I have even been on the radio to share with others.

Steph Lynn: My newest group AMPLIFIED QUEENS started in the midst of the pandemic. I am a single woman and away from my family. I was concerned about my discipline during the pandemic because of isolation and just a different way of life. I started teaching Zumba virtually and started with three women, we are now over 60 members worldwide. I also started walking daily and doing recorded Zumba videos outside. One day I thought to myself it would be totally cool to unite with women that wanted to exercise, eat healthy, and form a fitness sisterhood. I made some T-shirts and started advertising and soon I began to grow.

Every day I am “Living the Life” I imagined. One that is healthy, full of possibility, and happiness with myself. HEALTHY EATING “The Philosophy of Presentation” BY Steph Lynn I have this philosophy on food presentation. I eat with my eyes! I love everything to be plated PRETTY! I love taking photos of my food on pretty plates. I love colorful salads, without heavy dressings. I prefer vinaigrettes. My smoothies and desserts are often in wine glasses topped with an Italian Waffle. I love eating my garnish, so I try to garnish with edible items.

I have positive signs on my table, you will often see “Queen of Everything” in my food backgrounds. I also like to do funny visual challenges such as “Harvest Basket” where I put a basket of vegetables on my table and work to eat them all in a week.

Presentation is key to transformation; this is a great form of self-care and also builds some discipline. Take a few pretty pictures before sitting down to eat, enjoy your food, enjoy your setting. Share beautiful food memories with friends. Delvon: Author, TV/radio personality and celebrity stylist, the Delvon creator and host of Fashion Etc. Known from coast to coast for my unique, eye-catching personal style. I have worked with some of the hottest celebrities, including Karen Gravano of Mob Wives, Love & Hip Hop Atlanta’s Momma Dee and Shay Johnson from the Love & Hip Hop Miami chapter, among many others. I have hosted fashion shows for major plus-size retailer Ashley Stewart, and the iconic Fire Island Black Out festival in recent years. Delvon: I have written 3 books. Love Yourself First, Mirror Mirror, Delvon and Invisible Rain. I think my debut novel, Love Yourself First is my favorite. It was the beginning of a new life for me as an author and took me on the journey that I am still enjoying.

Delvon: I wrote my first book because of a relationship. But if I’m Delvon being honest, I was motivated by revenge in a sense. As I started writing it, I realized that it was therapeutic for me and helped to heal the hurt in me. It’s funny how being hurt can take your life in different directions. My intent was to become a star from my book.

Delvon: No. From a very young age, I wanted to be a singer. I Delvon always enjoyed writing because it allowed me to use my creativity.
