Situational Aesthetics: Selected Writings by Victor Burgin Alexander Streitberger (ed.)

Highly influential both as an artist and as a theoretician Victor Burgin figures amongst the most insightful thinkers on visual culture in recent times. His writings focus on the production of meanings and affects through images – at the intersections of subjective desire and sociopolitical organization – and cross a diversity of representational practices (photography, film, painting, advertising, television, the internet) and theoretical fields (semiotics, psychoanalysis, feminist theory, cultural studies). The essays in this volume provide a succinct overview of Burgin’s rich and multifaceted work during the last forty years – from its origins in debates within the Conceptual Art movement to its present concern with everyday perception in the environment of global media. The selection includes such classic essays as ‘Situational Aesthetics’ and ‘Photographic Practice and Art Theory’, together with less widely-known articles such as ‘Work and Commentary’ and the previously unpublished essays ‘Shadows, Time and Family Pictures’ and ‘Monument and Melancholia’. The essays are arranged chronologically in sections to represent four salient phases of Burgin’s preoccupations: Conceptual art and photography; A psychical realism; The city and global media; Infinite film. Each section is preceded by an exchange between Victor Burgin and the book’s editor, Alexander Streitberger, to introduce the main lines of thought. Examples from Burgin’s visual works, selected by the editor in consultation with the artist, accompany each section.

Two-Dimensional Sonata Form is the first book dedicated to the combination of the movements of a multimovement sonata cycle with an overarching single-movement form that is itself organized as a sonata form. Drawing on a variety of historical and recent approaches to musical form (e.g., Marxian and Schoenbergian Formenlehre, Caplin’s theory of formal functions, and Hepokoski and Darcy’s Sonata Theory), it begins by developing an original theoretical framework for the analysis of this type of form that is so characteristic of the later nineteenth and early twentieth century. It then offers an in-depth examination of nine exemplary works by four Central European composers: the Piano Sonata in B minor and the symphonic poems Tasso and Die Ideale by Franz Liszt, Richard Strauss’s tone poems Don Juan and Ein Heldenleben, the symphonic poem Pelleas und Melisande, the First String Quartet and the First Chamber Symphony by Arnold Schoenberg, and Alexander Zemlinsky’s Second String Quartet.

Sigmund Freud, in his search for the origins of the sense of guilt in individual life and culture, regularly speaks of ‘reading a dark trace,’ thus referring to the Oedipus myth as a myth about the problem of human guilt. In Freud’s view, this sense of guilt is a trace, a path, that leads deep into the individual’s mental state, into childhood memories, and into the prehistory of culture and religion. Herman Westerink follows this trace and analyzes Freud’s thought on the sense of guilt as a central issue in his work, from the earliest studies on the moral and ‘guilty’ characters of the hysterics, via later complex differentiations within the concept of the sense of guilt, and finally to Freud’s conception of civilization’s discontents and Jewish sense of guilt. The sense of guilt is a key issue in Freudian psychoanalysis, not only in relation to other key concepts in psychoanalytic theory but also in relation to Freud’s debates with other psychoanalysts, including Carl Gustav Jung and Melanie Klein.

Based on intensive research in the archives of six countries, this monograph presents an in-depth analysis of Belgium’s monetary and financial history during the Second World War. Exploring Belgium’s financial and business links with Germany, France, The Netherlands, Great Britain, the United States, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the study focuses on the roles played in this complex wartime network by the Central Bank and private bankers in Brussels, by the Belgian government in exile in London, and by the Belgian minister plenipotentiary in New York. Among the many subjects arising in the course of the analysis are: German attempts to plunder Belgium and Belgian resistance strategies; the peripeteia of the Belgian gold reserve, given in custody to the central banks of France and Great Britain; the role of the Belgian Congo; Belgium’s participation in the discussions leading up to the Bretton Woods conference; and the negotiations for creating a Customs Union, the so-called Benelux, blueprint for the 1958 Treaty of Rome. The final part of the book analyzes the famous monetary reform devised by Belgian Minister of Finance Camille Gutt at the liberation of the country in September 1944. In de loop van de negentiende eeuw komt ‘rechts Vlaanderen’ tegenover ‘links Wallonië’ te staan. Bij elke parlementsverkiezing bleek (en blijkt) het Vlaamse kiesgedrag af te wijken van het Waalse. Hoe is het ontstaan van rechts Vlaanderen te verklaren? Historici hebben het Vlaamse kiesgedrag vaak geïnterpreteerd als de politieke vertaling van de economische en culturele ‘achterlijkheid’ van ‘arm Vlaanderen’: de Vlaamse samenleving was traditioneel en de kiezers stemden er dus traditioneel. Anderen hebben aangevoerd dat de katholieke partij beter inspeelde op de Vlaamse verzuchtingen en dat de Vlaamse kiezers gewoon ‘rationeel’ handelden door rechts te stemmen. In dit boek onderzoekt Henk de Smaele beide theses kritisch. Hij komt tot de vaststelling dat geen van beide volstaat om de vorming van rechts Vlaanderen te verklaren. Om het fenomeen beter te begrijpen, moet men niet alleen aandacht hebben voor ‘tradities’ en ‘belangen’, maar ook voor ‘affecten’. Sinds vijf eeuwen is beiaardmuziek een typisch kenmerk van de steden in de Lage Landen. De beiaard maakt zozeer deel uit van het klankbeeld dat hij nauwelijks nog wordt opgemerkt. Toch heeft precies zijn alomtegenwoordigheid ervoor gezorgd dat mensen allerhande betekenissen aan hem hebben toegekend. Die betekenissen overstijgen het domein van de ‘zuivere’ muziek. De beiaard werd beschouwd als de ‘stem’ van bevolkingsgroepen en als een symbool van de waarden die hun leden met elkaar deelden. Over de afbakening van die groepen en over de inhoud van die waarden bestonden echter uiteenlopende meningen en rezen conflicten. De beiaard werd dus onvermijdelijk een politiek instrument. In België, een land dat doortrokken was van maatschappelijke tegenstellingen, werd hij dat meer dan waar ook. Soms was de beiaard een toonbeeld van burgerlijk-liberale waarden, dan weer van een strijdbaar katholicisme. Nu eens was hij Vlaams, dan weer Belgisch. Door de manieren te onderzoeken waarop de beiaard werd verbeeld, belichten de auteurs van dit boek de geschiedenis van België dan ook vanuit een verrassende hoek.

Onderzoeksgroep Politieke Geschiedenis leidt. Zijn onderzoek speelt zich af in het gebied waar politiek en cultuur elkaar ontmoeten.

A central figure of contemporary French philosophy, Jean-François Lyotard is well-known as the theoretician of the postmodern condition. The figural, the differend, the anamnesis, the affect, the inhuman and the sublime are reccurring themes in a philosophy that constitutes a restless attempt to account for feelings and thoughts that resists the boundaries of language. Lyotard’s sensibility towards language, its vicissitudes and its discontents is also materialized in various essays on contemporary visual artists. It is this segment of his work that the series Jean-François Lyotard: Writings on Contemporary Art and Artists collects in five volumes that offer a complete collection of all of Lyotard’s writings on contemporary art and artists. Some of these essays have only been published in German, French or English. Others are published here for the very first time. Leuven’s five volumes include the complete original French texts along with English translations on facing pages. The parallel presentation of both the French text and the English translation will introduce a wide English-speaking public to the intriguing manner in which Lyotard approached the artists and their work. Illustrations of the works discussed accompany the texts. All volumes include an introduction by Herman Parret and an epilogue by another Lyotard expert. This project is the fruit of a collective initiative by Herman Parret and Vlad Ionescu from the Institute of Philosophy (Leuven University) and other prominent Lyotard specialists – Dalia Judovitz, Geoffrey Bennington and Peter W. Milne – from Emory University, the institution with which Lyotard was associated for many years. Dolorès Lyotard has also been closely involved in this project. The research was carried out mainly at the Doucet Library, where the Lyotard archives are kept, and at the Kandinsky Library of the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The first volume in this new series Jean-François Lyotard—Writings on Contemporary Art and Artists is dedicated to the Dutch Abstract Expressionist painter, sculptor, and poet Karel Appel (1921–2006). Originally published in German, the book’s original French text, written in 1992 as the result of a correspondence with Karel Appel, is here published for the first time. In his text about Appel, Lyotard reflects on the nature and function of color as it is used by the artist. Aristotle’s treatise On the Soul figures among the most influential texts in the intellectual history of the West. ‘Weakness of the will’ is often used as a shorthand expression to describe a situation in which a person acts against his/her better judgement. This well-known phenomenon poses a serious philosophical problem because it questions deeply our self-understanding as rational agents. This volume offers the first comprehensive investigation into the roots of the present discussion of this subject. Four principal areas constitute the basic framework of the history of this problem: (1) the debate on akrasia in classical Greece; (2) the Christian understanding of weakness of will in late Antiquity; (3) the understanding of involuntary actions in the monastic period; (4) the scholastic controversy between ‘intellectualists’ and ‘voluntarists’ about the roots of human freedom. The book reconstructs the development of the problem within these frameworks and shows how the Greek and the Christian understanding of weakness of the will are intertwined. The final part offers an outlook on the present debate in view of these historical findings. jörn müller studied philosophy, history and education at Bonn and Edinburgh. He obtained his PhD at Bonn in 2001 with a study on the ethics of Albert the Great. In 2008 he finished his ‘habilitation’ at Bonn. He has been holding a chair for the history of philosophy at the University of Würzburg since October 2007.

This Quodlibet was written at the beginning of what could be called the height of his career. In total there are 37 questions, which cover a wide range of topics, including theories in theology, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophical anthropology, ethics, and canon law. In these questions Henry presents his mature thought concerning the number of human substantial forms in which he counters the claims of the defenders of Thomas Aquinas, particularly those in Giles of Lessines’s De unitate formae, but also those found in Giles of Rome’s Contra Gradus. He is critical of Thomas Aquinas’s theories concerning human knowledge, the ‘more’ and the ‘less,’ and virtue. He also is critical of Bonaventure’s analysis of Augustine’s notion of rationes seminales. Their purpose is moral: the reader is invited to reflect on important ethical issues and to use the example of these great men from the past to improve his or her own conduct. This book offers the first full-scale commentary on the Life of Alcibiades. It examines how Plutarch’s biography of one of classical Athens’ most controversial politicians functions within the moral programme of the Parallel Lives. Built upon the narratological distinction between story and text, Verdegem’s analysis, which involves detailed comparisons with other Plutarchan works (esp. the Lives of Nicias and Lysander) and several key texts in the Alcibiades tradition (e.g., Plato, Thucydides, Xenophon), demonstrates how Plutarch carefully constructed his story and used a wide range of narrative techniques to create a complex Life that raises interesting questions about the relation between private morality and the common good.

The epigram is certainly one of the most intriguing, while at the same time most elusive, genres of Neo-Latin literature. From the end of the fifteenth century, almost every humanist writer who regarded himself a true ‘poeta’ had composed a respectable number of epigrams. Given our sense of poetical aesthetics, be it idealistic, post-idealistic, modern or post-modern, the epigrammatic genre is difficult to understand. Because of its close ties with the historical and social context, it does not fit any of these aesthetic approaches.
